Export to Quicktime Movie Results in Aspect Ratio Distortion

All of my original footage was shot in miniDV. I have created a sequence with the following settings:
Frame size: 720 x 480
Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
Vid rate: 29.97 fps
Ultimately the sequence needs to go to DVD with a standard 4:3 aspect ratio. To export, I am using:
File > Export > QuickTime Movie...
I have tried using several different settings including:
Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC 48 kHz
Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC (HQ) 48 kHz
Apple Pro Res 960x720 30p 48 kHz
DV NTSC 48 kHz
etc...
All settings yield the same result: a slightly squeezed aspect ratio. At first, I thought that this might simply be the fact that I was playing back files in QuickTime which uses square pixels I believe. But in both DVD Studio Pro and iDVD, the simulation shows the same effect. (By the way, Finder's "Get Info" reads the resulting Final Cut Pro Movie File dimensions 720x486.)
I'm fairly new to FCP so I'm hoping there is something obvious that I have missed. Can anyone explain what I need to do to get the video to DVD without a distorted aspect ratio?
(Incidentally, I have managed to export using quicktime conversion with no problem. But I need the export to be a Final Cut Pro Movie File so as to maintain chapter markers, etc.)
Advice welcome!!!

Hi David, I know this was discussed in you posting already but I just wanted to make sure I had it clear. I have a 4:3 film and I've exported as a quicktime movie with current settings, which should be 4:3 and found that the image when played back in quicktime, looks horizontally stretched. Almost as if quicktime is trying to play it back as a 16:9 image. I think this is the same issue the other fellow was having but I just wanted to be clear. You're saying that the 4:3 image distortion is perfectly normal when played back in quicktime on a computer screen and that the export will look fine when put to DVD or sent to a monitor? I just wanted to make sure because this problem is freaking me out and I don't want to deliver a distorted image to my client. Could you also explain briefly why this happens with quicktime export and not quicktime conversion and what causes quicktime to distort the 4:3 image? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
james.

  • Keynote to quicktime movie has wrong aspect ratio

I have created some Keynote Quicktime movies.  When I import them into iMovie, they become too tall and wide to see the pictures.  How can I change the aspect ratio (I want to use 16:9) and/or the height and width of the slides to be seen properly?

  • Exporting  small quicktime, can't preserve aspect ratio??

I'm trying to export an HD project with a 960 x 720 pixel aspect ratio that's about 3 minutes long into a QT that's less than 10 meg.. i've done it a few different ways but i can't seem to keep it letterboxed to 16:9 even though i've checked the preserve aspect ratio box in the export with QT conversion dialogue box... sequence settings i haven't changed.. is that where i'm going wrong?? Help! needs to be submitted for festival by tomorrow!!

If you need the final clip to be 4:3 for some reason, such as posting it to YouTube, then you can get the letterbox bars by nesting into a 4:3 sequence in FCP, or adding letterboxing in Compressor.
However, if the clip will play natively as a QT file, iit can be 16:9 without letterboxing, which has many advantages. The dimesnions I use for this most often are 480x270 That should allow you to get your file down to size at good quality.
    Hope this helps -

  • FCP export to "QuickTime Movie" distorts aspect ratio of all text, displays video correctly.

    Hi you all,
My name is Alexander, I'm from Belgium.
I'm working on Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, on a MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, running version 10.7.2 of Mac OS X (Lion).
I'm editing a 'making of' of a Flemish feature film. I shot this 35 minute documentary short with my own Canon HDV-camcorder (XH-A1). The Final Cut Pro-project is stored on an external hard drive (1 TB LaCie Minimus).
I've been doing exports to "QuickTime Movie" for years now, without any problems, but since a week or two, FCP started messing up the titles over the video - and the titles only. Their aspect ratio is messed up once exported, but they look just fine in the FCP Timeline (in Viewer, I can verify that the aspect ratio of the titles is always "0"). I'm trying to export this to "HDV - 720p25".
Here's a comparison between the two:
As you can see: the MOV has the titles' aspect ratio all weird, the upper one partly covering the lower one. All titles and text in the docu come out like this, but the video (and audio) is exported correctly.
Any ideas on how to solve this very annoying problem?
    Many thanks!!
    Alexander

    Hi Studio X,
Thank you for your quick reply.
The producers of the film want to upload this making of-documentary on YouTube. Therefore, I need to give them a high-quality-mov with the least possible Megabites. My film has a 35 minute running time.
So I figured: Let's start with the 'smallest' high-quality FCP-export to begin with (HDV-720p25), and throw that one in Compressor, in order to end up with a 'small' but good looking H.264-MOV for YouTube.
But for some reason, those "HDV-720p25"-exports mess up the titles. And I can't figure out why.

  • Export to Quicktime movie continued crashes. HELP

I have sequence, it renders no problem. Whenever I go to export to Quicktime movie it crashes. I have gone and deleted all files associated with it and redone the sequence from scratch, and I keep getting the same results. Crash while exporting. I am working in DV, so all I do at export is export to Quicktime movie, which means it should be exporting as a DV movie. I am not sure what is wrong please help.
As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my Post,
    Sebastian

I did try burning the 18.05GB file on i-DVD but even with the auto compression of i-DVD it only managed to compress it down to 5.4GB - too large for my 4.7GB DVD.
The only reason I need to burn it so my friend can author it is that he's a little too fussy and wants to author it on Adobe Encore.
I managed to get a firewire drive - but the blooming PC didnt accept it as it was Mac formated!
I just exported the original file as a QT movie, reducing sound quality, frame rate etc but it still comes out at 17.5GB - still to large for i-DVD (and thats with i-DVD's compression, which comes in at approx 5GB!)
I really really blame myself for this as I never really looked into anything more than the creative aspect of FCP. But I've started now.

  • Export to Quicktime/Movie to MPEG-4 Quality Much Worse with Snow Leopard?

I just tried exporting an HD movie from iMovie using Export to Quicktime - Movie to MPEG-4 for the first time since upgrading to Snow Leopard and besides taking forever to export, the quality at the same settings I've used before is terrible. There's terrible macroblocking even on relatively slow moving scenes. I've exported several movies using the same workflow previously to upgrading and the video was perfect.
I use mpeg-4, H.264 encoding, 4096 bit rate, 1920x1080 HD resolution, key frame every 15 frames. It's definitely a change in the encoder as just sharing to the Media Browser results in expected quality.
As a test, I tried upping the bitrate to 5120 but it didn't help with the macroblocking.
Anyone with similar problems and/or a solution?

I've actually started noticing more artifacts using the Share to Media Browser quicktime presets. The movies that are created don't seem to be as high quality as ones I've created before. It's almost like quicktime is missing keyframes or something and then artifacting. It's not consistent. I've got one mobile formatted movie where it artifacts badly in the first minute and then not at all afterwards. It's kind of frustrating.

  • File type for export as quicktime movie

I thought I read here that "Export as Quicktime Movie" produces a .mov file (although without the extension). I'm using Brightcove to host our videos, and their publishpod says it accepts .mov files, but doesn't seem to work with the file from FCE. Is it really a .mov? Or do I need to export using Quicktime Conversion (and burn up lots more time in the process?)

    Thanks...
I did search the forum and nothing addressed my specific issue. Sorry if I didn't phrase my question clearly.
Anyway, I suspect the problem is that the Brightcove software does not work well with the Apple Intermediate Codec. I had no problem with a .mov exported with H.264 compression. This adds extra time to my workflow, but I suspect it will be a necessary evil.

Try Mixing Down the audio before export.

  • Export To Quicktime Movie (Reference or Self Contained) - GENERAL ERROR

    Hi -
I recently had to re-install FCS2 due to problems with OSX.
Now, for some reason, when I want to export from FCP to get a QT reference movie, I get a general error message. All other options from FCP export seem to work, but NOT export to Quicktime Movie.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    how so?
we can all do with a dummy's cheat sheet e.g. when making a master monitor the record device, not the computer.
So come on, what'd you do?

  • Export to Quicktime Movie rerendering. Why?

    Hi
I have a DV project edited in FCP 5.11 which is all completely rendered. It's actually made up of a number of sequences joined end to end each of which is rendered before rendering the final 'top' sequence. There are some heavily rendered motion still sections in there, so I don't really want to render them again.
However when I Export to Quicktime Movie, using the current settings, ie not making a self-contained movie, it takes hours to render and looks like it is rerendering everything I painstakingly made sure was rendered to full quality already. Is there anything I can do to stop it doing this? (I am doing this to make things much easier for Compressor, rendering the whole project as a referenced movie.)
    Thanks for your attention.

Just checking that you are, in fact, leaving the menu as Current Settings... and not changing it to match the settings of your timeline...
Also, you say you are not making a self contained movie - you've left that unchecked? Are you sure you don't have any gray realtime bars over the top of your clips - resize, dissolve, etc don't require rendering until export. You need to check the Render All menu (opt-r) under Sequence has everything checked...

  • "Export as Quicktime Movie" -- won't play on other computers

When I use the "Export as Quicktime Movie" option and try to play it back on a Mac without FCP installed, it is missing components and won't play back in Quicktime Player. Of course, I can export with various compressions and then it's fine, but sometimes I want that big "original" file. Any thoughts? Thanks!
    Message was edited by: elisenew

You do need the codec you are exporting to installed in the other machine if you wish to play the exported file. A variety of codecs are available only with FCP installed.
A couple of possible solutions are a very high res H.264 or Download [ProRes decoder|http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac] to share a prores file between machines.

  • "General Error" when I export to quicktime movie .mov

I have no idea why all of a sudden FCE4 says "General Error" when I export using quicktime movie... If i use another option like mpeg4 or other it works fine. What could be a problem?
    I have lots of memory.

I made the movie self contained and it started but then stops at 10%. This isnt anything complex just a few clips edited together w/ music. I just want to upload to youtube. I have no idea what the deal is!

I am also expriencing the same error. Tried every solution listed so far:
    1. Switch off background rendering. Trash render files. Don't render. Export.
    2. copying the project within Final Cut Pro into another project
    3. remove the following folder: Library > Application Support > ProApps > MIO > RADPlugins > XDCAMFormat.RADPlug
Nothing worked. I try to export to Vimeo, YouTube, and master. All error right at 9%
