Export to tape in FCP X

Output to tape in FCP X.  I host and produce a broadcast TV program.  I want to move up to FCP X from FCE.  Two of my stations only accept tape.  Has anyone developed a plug-in or work around to export to tape in FCP X?

If you happen to use any of Blackmagic Designs I/O hardware stuff, Intensity, Ultrastudio ... with perhaps a Thunderbolt connection .... you get their software suite as a Bonus.
There you have a "Tool" called Media Express, that has it's own Log & Capture, Playback and Edit to Tape capacities. It understands all ProRes flavors and DV-DVCPRO/HD and even plain H.264.
It comes free with any of the interfaces, you can even download on their support page the "Desktop Video" Suite for a look.
Just follow their lead ...
BTW : AJA also has something equivalent. Hardware & Software.

  • How to export to tape

Hi, i have camera panasonic dvpro200, and fcpx, with the FW, I edit my movie and i like to export it to tape thro the fw, but it not work, why

You can't export to tape with FCP X  .  .  .  it just doesn't do it.
The future of video shooting is on non-linear storage devices not linear tapes.
FCP X reflects this fact and caters mainly for such cameras.
We are lucky that Apple has permitted us to even import from a tape camera.

  • Any 3rd Party Application(s) to export to tape?

Heya guys. Hope production has been treating you all well. I'm kind of in a jam here where for some reason both my sony dv decks have stopped working via firewire. I currently need a third party application(if one exists) that can export a ProRes file to DV Tape. I'm about to go through the pain of reinstalling FCS 7, but I've asked a friend to come by with his cam for me to export a program to tape. I reinstalled my OS as a last ditch effort to see if that was the problem, sadly, it wasn't. So I can only conclude that my decks are... swabed.

That's strange then Nick. Almost all my timelines are in a different codec setting. I just figured FCP just plays em back through DV signal which is why all these years I've been able to export my ProRes timeline to mini DV tapes. Premier Pro did it as well...H.264 is another story. Been trying to switch over to FCPX lately so I don't wanna have to reinstall FCP 7 if I don't have to... or Premier for that matter. I don't mind converting the clips to DV but the question still remains, do you guys have any apps to export to tape?

  • Only Audio Is Exporting to Tape????

    Hi
I am trying to export a sequence to a minidv tape on FCP, using my dvx100a as a deck. I've been able to do this before...only this time, only the audio is exporting to the tape, and the video shows up as just black. When I stop the exporting process, the frame which I exit on shows up on the camera's viewfinder but is not recorded.
Any suggestions on how I can get both video and audio to export to the tape?
    Thanks in advance!

Neither of theses suggestions solved my problem...
...maybe somebody could tell me what my ideal A/V Setting should be if i am trying to a simple print to video with a miniDV camera (firewire)...and why only black shows up for video?
the best ive gotten so far is being able to play the video on the timeline and have it show up on the camera...i can hear the audio, but on the camera screen, all that shows up is the 1st frame and it holds as the audio plays.
    What is going on!?!?
    im really stuck
    Thanks!

  • Help! Deck rental ends Monday, and I can not export to tape...

I am trying to export my movie to tape from FCP to the sony dsr-1500. I started to export, and made the mistake of stopping to go back and see if it worked. Now I have time code on about 3 minutes of tape, and the deck will no longer record on the tape. How can I erase\fix the time code issue, so that I can record to this DVCAM tape? Thanks.

    Frankie,
It is nit true that you cannot control the DSR1500 from within FCP.
It can be done over FireWire and over RS422.
For the latter you'll need extra hardware, so let's asume you don't have that. Then you'll will have FireWire-control left.
I suppose the video Signal goes from FCP to the deck over FireWire?
Then check ON THE DECK: (and see what happens in the deck's display)
    MENU button.
Tap UP or DOWN, until you see SETUP MENU.
TAP Right Arrow once to select this setup menu.
Tap Up or DOWN, Until you see INTERFACE
TAP Right Arrow once to select this INTERFACE menu.
Tap Up or DOWN, Until you see REMOTE I/F
TAP Right Arrow once to select this Remote menu.
Tap Up or DOWN, Until you see i.LINK
    now press SAVE.
Set the deck to REMOTE with the switch top-right.
FCP now can control your deck.
    Go to FCP
    Select the sequence.
    Remove in and out points
Go to File > Edit to Tape
    Go to the Mastering-tab
Under LEADER:Choose Colorbars and black that you want to have before your program.
(Use the checkboxes. and fill in the amount of seconds).
I'd advice to at least have 1 minute of color bars/black before the start of your program.
    Under MEDIA select ENTIRE MEDIA
UNDER TRAILER check the checkbox and select at least 10 seconds of black
Go to the Device Settings tab. Choose the right Device control FireWire NTSC I suppose, because you live in USA right?
Now go to the VIDEO tab.
    Rewind your tape
Look on the deck what the timecode is of the first frame,
Now in the lower left corner of the EdittoTape window fill in a TC that is 10 seconds higher that the start TC of the tape.
In the top-middle of the Edit to Tape window choose MASTERING (not editing)
NOW find your sequence in your browser and pick it up and drag it over the video part of the edit to tape window. Keep mouse down until you have the mouse over the ASSEMBLE part. Release the mouse. Let FCP render if needed and press OK to start when it is asking if you are ready.
    Well. Is this working?
And if not. Tell us exactly what went wrong and in what step.
NB: On the deck menu it could be that you can't find the right settings. Look for ADVANCED menu then. You might be in Basic menu...

  • What is the best miniDV camcorder to buy to export miniDV tapes to Macbook pro?

    Hey there,
I have miniDV tapes with home videos that I want to export to iMovie or FCP 5.0 so I can turn the footage into digital video clips to burn to DVD's.  They were shot on a Sony handicam that no longer works.  I bought a Panasonic PV-gs15 in order to do the job but it doesn't export video, only pictures from SD card. Now I just want to get the best camcorder or device (within financial reason) for the job.  Can anyone tell me the best way/Camcorder to get this video off these miniDV tapes and onto my computer please?

    Hi
May be You find something of interest in my notes regarding this (and iMovie - but it is General)
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
    from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About . . / More . .
under Firewire.. what do you read . . ?
    More
    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choice / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    No Camera or bad import
    • USB hard disk
    • Network storage
    • File Vault is on

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • I need to capture while continuing to edit and export to tape, bad idea?

Is it possible to use a different capture program (other than iMovie) to capture DV footage while I continue to do cuts only editing with Final Cut and perhaps even exporting to tape through a different deck on a Dual 2.0 G5 with two hard drives? I understand that I need a program that captures the clip as a QT movie at 48 kHz.
I need to do this in order to justify moving from a linear edit system for news.
What would be the recommended system capable of this?
    17 PowerBook 1.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Licensing issues prevent us from just dumping our feeds onto one server and then connecting it to all the edit bays with Gigabit. But cost is a big factor for us since we are small. One machine at a time is what we can do since it's all new to us and unproven, really. Prove that it can be faster, then, we can move to put a G5 in every edit bay. Right now the editors can record a feed of several stories and continue to edit in the bay. They order the feed, then hit record and go back to work.
Only one deck isn't a problem, the importing will come from a router going thru a DV bridge. But just as long as we can import while we continue to do some cuts only editing, no effects, no filters while we import. No need to export at the same time, tho that would be cool if ever possible.
Once all the stories are done for the show, we will export, perhaps just play back off FCP during the show, easier for the tape op to just hit the spacebar I guess.
basically the question is, what bare bones capture utility will grab our 48kHz DV footage and give us enough CPU left that it won't crash when we go back to editing?

  • Audio drop out and picture wobble during export to tape

I use a camera to capture footage from DV tapes - it's its only job and is always connected to the Mac.
But when playing back the footage from the FCP 4.5 timeline to make a back up DV copy of a finished job it all goes awry.
The audio cuts in and out - from normal audio to silence and back again at no regular intervals but every few seconds.
The picture wobbles just as though the camera isn't getting enough power (it is connected to the mains)I watch the playback with the camera's flip out screen.
On the computer it all looks fine. Playing back the DV tape shows me what I saw on the flip out screen - a wobbly picture with intermittent sound.
The cables are good. The camera works fine in all other respects, the external firewire drives work fine, the computer is good.
I'm stumped! I can't export to tape any more...
But exporting the files via compressor to make DVDs is fine - no problems.

Playing back the DV tape shows me what I saw on the flip out screen - a wobbly picture with intermittent sound.
The cables are good. The camera works fine in all other respects, the external firewire drives work fine, the computer is good.
Not quite sure how you reach your conclusion in the second paragraph. If it displays fine on the computer and is TOTAL JUNK after it heads out the firewire cable - I'd start with every piece of equipment that connects to the computer. Time to do A/B testing. find another camera, A-DV converter, firewire cables, even the computer and test each element.
    good luck.

  • Can't export to tape on Premier Pro CS4 Extended

When I attempt to export to tape from Premier Pro CS4 Extended, version 4.1.0, to a DV Cam, the tape rolls and records (with device control) but I get no video or audio.
    I have:
-selected the timeline for the sequence
-the work area bar is over the entire sequence
-I’ve made sure the tape is record enabled
-I have tried two DV cameras, and three fire wire cords
-I am able to capture video into the computer using all of the above
-I’ve tried moving my project from my external hard drive to my internal one
    Still no export…….

  • Can't export to tape !   Help !

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble exporting an HDV sequence back out to tape from Premiere Pro CC.
I click on "File > Export > To Tape".
Then the "render and record" window pops up.
I click ok, but instead of the render line coming up and then recording, it just jumps to the "Transcoding to HDV" box, and almost instantly just returns to the "Render and record" one without doing anything.
And when I try to export a DV sequence, the VCR starts recording but received neither picture nor sound from PC.
    Import works normally !
The problem is the same regardless of the recording device: Camcorder Canon HV20 and XHA1, or VCR Sony M25 .
Curiously, a few weeks ago, export was ok.
    I don't understand !!!
With Premiere Pro CS6, everything is ok, both import AND export.
Has anyone experienced something like this before ?
Thanks in advance for your help !

Same problem here, double checked on another system with Adobe Premiere CS6 export works fine.
The same project settings / sequence settings (HDV 1440x1080@50i in Premiere CC and unable to export to Sony HDV deck.  It starts rendering and writing but image stays black.
Using an other NLE software on the same system exports normally, so the firewirecard / deck and connections are fine.
Device control is the same as in CS6, disabled mercury engine (problem in the past)
    Any idea would be appriciated

  • Can't export to tape...HELP PLEASE

    Hi,
I can't seem to export my sequence to tape on my Sony DCR-PC8E PAL camcorder.
I select select File -> export -> export to tape
It says it is ready; starts the camera recording automatically; but the camcorder screen remains blue and no signal is recorded.
The camcorder says 'DV IN' on the screen.
Sending a sequence to tape from windows movie maker works fine.
    Capturing from tape works fine.
Anyone got any ideas on how to make this work?
    Thanks D.

    Solved
You have to change the playback settings in the sequence settings for each sequence.

  • Cannot export to tape from CS4

I have PPro CS4 connected by firewire to either a Canon HV 30 MiniDV camera or a Sony GV-D1000 Mini DV deck.  (I've tried both).
I am trying to export my project to MiniDV tape.  I have succeeded in the past but for some reason now can't do it.
I select "Export to tape" in PPro and all seem to go smoothly, the device being controlled from the PPro device controller and the tape starting to roll.  It's just that no image appears in the screen on the HV30 or GV-D1000, and nothing is recorded.  I am following the instructions for each device regarding recording via this method.  It just seems no data is being sent from the PC to the device.
Options in Edit - Preferences - Device Control are set for the approrpriate PAL system and device.
I can record from the device onto my PC using the same firewire port and cable.
    I'm using Windows 7.
    12Gb RAM
    i7 chip
    ATI Radeon HD5870 graphics card
    Can anyone help, please?

Thanks again, Ann, but as mentioned in my "Dropping frames during capture" thread, this has already been tried and failed.
The following things have been tried and have all failed to prevent, roughly every minute or so during capture or export, two or three seconds of interference which results in lots of dropped frames during capture or a blank screen during export:
    Different firewire cables
Different programs:  PPro CS4; Pr Elements 9, Windows Live Movie Maker
    Capturing to different hard discs
    Capturing to external hard disc
    Closing every non-essential process
    Detaching every non-essential peripheral
Switching off all other electronic devices in that part of the house, phone included
Capturing from/exporting to different devices from different makers
    Changing the firewire driver
I think it's either the firewire driver on Windows 64 bit, (althouhg I've treid changing it) or a problem with the graphics card.
The firewire slot is not in a card by itself, but part of a panel of many slots and plugholes at the back of my PC - USBs, minijacks, firewire etc  I have no further slots available for a separate firewire card.
The only solution I can see is to save the project as a huge AVI file, transfer that to my lap top, make a movie out of it with Windows Live Movie Maker, and export from there.

  • Cannot export to MPG2 from FCP 5.0.3

    Hey,
Finally getting ready to burn my project to DVD using DVDSP. When I go to export to MPG2 however, it isn't listed as an option in my available codecs. There is:
    MPEG IMX 8-bit PAL - 50 Mvb/s - 48 kHz
    or
    MPEG 4
Then under custom, there is another few MPGs that go something like this:
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (30Mb/s)
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (40Mb/s)
    MPEG IMX 525/60 (50Mb/s)
I also opened Quicktime and see that there is no codec there either to encode to DVDSP compatible format.
Needless to say Compressor has never worked, unless the appearance of an error message reading, "Cannot submit batch, cannot connect to background process" is the new definition of working. I've tried all the workarounds for Compressor that have appeared over the last 4 months or so.
I don't really want to export as DV-PAL or whatever and then import into DVDSP cos that will be two lots of compression and I'm assuming it won't come out too good.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Crazy

ooooh boy... that's not good news for me... I have totally given up on Compressor. I have reinstalled too many times to count along with various other fixes such as a sudo command in terminal, and disconnecting all firewire/ethernet cables. (Although even if it did work, it wouldn't be much use to me without Firewire cos that's where all my captured video is).
SOme guy on the Compressor board though was saying he doesn't use Compressor cos it's too slow. He exports directly out of FCP somehow? Can I import a sequence into DVDSP?... probably not.
This is insane... all those $$$ down the dunny cos I can't even get my project to DVD!!

  • CS3 Exporting to tape HELP!

Hi!  I am using Premiere CS3 on Windows XP. I have a Panasonic mini DV camcorder plugged in. I am trying desperately to work out how to export my project to tape. I have the settings okay. I set the 'Assemble at timecode' to 10 seconds. I had recorded 30 seconds of black onto the tape previously. When I click
on 'Record', the camcorder gets itself to 10 seconds, frame by frame, and then stops-  and I get a message of 'Recording Failed'.
I've tried it having the camcorder playing and on pause, and also stopped, but on playback setting.
    What am I doing wrong?!
PRIZE for anyone who can fix this for me!!!

nope. sorry. to be honest I sorta think I recall that exporting to tape isnt a happening thing with premiere cs3...like it doesnt actually do that...but my memory is not so great as I am losing brain cell function on a regular basis.
