Export to thumb drive and remove hidden files for Pandigital frame

I have a Pandigital photoframe. I find from searching online that there is zero support for Mac users. The frame mounts in the finder then disappears after a short while. Searching the web, I have found (supposedly) that one must export the files from iPhoto to an MS/DOS formatted thumb drive. After that, hidden files written by the Mac on the thumb drive must be removed using Terminal. I'm not sure if the directions that I found at these sites are correct or might not be complete. I am a novice at Terminal so maybe something is not clear to me on these sites. Can anyone help with transfer from iPhoto to a Pandigital frame? The sites are:

This search
http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=resource+fork&os=mac
has links to many other apps that will remove the resource fork from these files. I don't mean to be obtuse but I don't often have reason to use these apps and so I'm slow to give specific assistance on them. You are best to read the Help on these apps or contact their support.

  • How do I see and remove hidden files?

I copied some .jpg files to an SD card to pop into the SD card slot on my new Panasonic plasma tv.
When I setup a slide show every other file says "cannot read file 01" . All the pictures are there but there are these hidden files ( I Assume) every other one. There seems to be one of these extra hidden files for each picture file.
It's really annoying watching a slide show this way.
The files don't show in a finder window.
Is there a way to see these files and delete them so they won't show in my slideshow?
Thanks for any info or help you can provide.
    Len in NC

Are you copying these files from the Mac to a PC-formatted SD card? If so the invisible files to which you refer are the result of filesystem incompatibilities. The structure of a Mac file results in the file's resource fork being stripped off and saved as a separate file on the PC-formatted disk.
There are utilities that can "clean" files for use on PCs:
    GrimReaperCM
    Remove MacOS Junk
    BlueHarvest
    WinFSCleanser
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How do I find and remove hidden files

For some reason, after the recent install of SL my 1TB drive is extremely bloated. I have deleted or moved just about everything possible from the disk (excluding system files and applications) and it still shows that I only have 94.08 GB of space available.
Is there a good piece of software out there that will help me to find out if there are several hidden files and remove what is unnecessary?

Wow ... that was enlightening. I discovered that somehow there is a hidden folder on the 1TB drive entitled "volumes" and within that folder is a subfolder entitled "Mega Drive" (my self-titled name for the 1TB boot drive), which is an exact duplicate of my previous hard drive.
A little more about how I got here. I had to computer in to the Apple Store, after upgrading to SL, for what I initially though was a hardware issue. The Genius felt it was software, did an erase and install. When I got the macing back I tried to us Migration Assistant to copy files from my Time Machine drive, it took all night so I wasn't awake when it finished. I suspect that is where this folder came from, as the next day I could not find the information on my computer, so I started manually moving the files from that drive.
The bottom line is this ... is it safe to remove trash this entire folder?

  • USB Hard / Thumb Drives and lost / hidden / duplicate new folders

It seems I can force this problem to happen consistently on multiple MacBooks with different USB storage devices. Her is what happens:
Connect a USB external hard drive or data stick
    Open Finder on that device
Create a new folder with keyboard short cut command (CMDShiftN)
quickly type the name of the new folder
    THEN the following happens:
two! new folders will appear with the new name
Sometimes an adjacent folder gets renamed to the new name, yet the contents in both folders are the same (which is empty, due to the newly created folder)
if I switch views (from Icon to panes or list), both of the new folders disappear
If I switch back to icon view, both re appear
If I delete one (does not matter which) then both are deleted (sent to trash, thank goodness) including the adjacent folder which had other data in it!
IF I type the new name of the newly made folder real slow, then all seems to work well
I purchased my mac in June 06. This just happened today. I run 10.4.10 with latest firmware. Plugged in a USB 1GB Centon Data Stick.
Two days ago, my buddy, who just bought his MacBook last month, described the same problem. He had an external W.D. USB drive (powered from the Mac). He spent a day creating folders and organizing data. He said every once in a while, it would happen to him, especially on new folders with short names). I thought it was user error, since he was new to the architecture. Ironically, he was sitting next to me when it happened to me today.

I have only seen this reported as happening with things on a server, or on an external drive that is formatted for Windows (FAT32). How is your USB drive formatted? If it is not Mac OS Extended, see this thread:

It appears to be a Finder bug. You can either live with it, or else copy the files somewhere else then reformat the drive and put them back.

  • How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies on to my thumb drive and WD My Passport external hard drive. My Mac keeps saying "can't be copy because it is too large for the volumes format

How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies onto my thumb drive and WD my passport external hard drive. My Mac is saying that can't be copied because it is too large for volumes format

[file] is too large for the volumes format
That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations

Saving a Photoshop CC project from a Mac (in .PSD format) to a thumb drive and trying to transfer it to a Dell laptop with Photoshop CS6.  Will not open...Error message: could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document.

The file was corrupted somewhere along the way (assuming it was still readable on the Macintosh).
The platforms don't matter, but you still need file transfer that doesn't corrupt files...

  • I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives.  Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location.  Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want.  Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing.  Then quit and restart itunes.  If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not.  If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)).  Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

How to streamline and remove duplicate files on my HD before I backup?
is there a good program or freeware that can automate and isolate when I have
duplicate files hiding in the many folders on my Drive... Yes, in a perfect world
I should know better than having a Drive that is not perfectly organized
I think there is something called SpringCleaning for windows
is there something like this for Mac?
Time machine won't let you remove something after you realized you backed
up two of the same files... Thanks for ideas

You should back up your drive with Time Machine before you delete any files in case you make a mistake.

Click on the Time Machine browser icon on the dock. Locate the duplicate file you wish to delete and highlight it. Click on the button with the gear on and choose Delete "all backups of".

  • Citrix mapped drives and crystals merged files

Has anybody come across an issue with Citrix mapped drives and crystals merged files.
I have updated the crystal DLL's my application uses to 11.5 and created a new setup kit to distribute my app including these new DLLu2019s along with a merged file call crstalreports11_5_net_2005.msm the Visual Studio setup app added. The installation runs fine on the Citrix server and application runs as well.  When I come to run any report on the Citrix server I get an error u201Cprocedure call or argument is not validu201D.  If I remove the mapping to the drives the reports run without any errors.
I need to keep the mapped drives on Citrix so removing the mappings is not really a solution to my problem (which is a shame really)
I am using Visual Studio 2005, Crystal Report XI and Citrix 4.5
Any help would be gratefully received

See if Process Monitor will help you trace down to where this is happening. Process Monitor can be downloaded from here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
Make sure you filter for your process name as Proc Mon creates rather large log files. Once you have a log, search for errors such as Access Denied, etc.

  • Thumb Drives Icons only shows file Previews Icon

    Hello all,
I am trying to change my icons on my thumb drives and External HDDs and I have googled on how to do this which requires you to open get info and copy and paste. But when I do this I keep getting the wrong I icon I keep getting the preview Icon. I have tried different formats jpg, png, ico, also icns but I sill keep getting the preview. How can I get this to work or am I missing something ? I am new to macs so bare with me

You have to actually open the image you want to use IN Preview, select all, copy and then paste in the destination item's GetInfo window. If the item you are copying from already has a custom icon you can can copy from its GetInfo window then paste in the destination GetInfo. However, it sounds like that is not the case with the files you are attempting to use as the source.

  • How do I clean up your mac and remove unwanted files?

Can someone instruct me how to clean my mac and remove unwanted files that slow the mac down?

this forum is about running Windows on a Mac.
    Hence, use Disk Cleanup
CCleaner works fine for both Mac and Windows - strongly recommend it for Windows
Uninstall background processes, less is more and you don't need most and definitely not two that are trying to monitor system and disk drives. If you need one setup a system just for weekend maintenance and emergency.
Allow more than adequate free space.

  • How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)

How can I identify and remove duplicate file (audio & photo)?  I have quite a few libraries created as backup files.

    Terence,
Yes, the duplicates appear in the iPhoto window. I have folders with same name occuring two or even three times sometimes with exactly the same set of photos (ie photos with the same ID) and sometimes with a limited set of photos. Other  folders appear only once.
I normally take my MacBook with me if I'm shooting a lot of photos, such as on holiday, and then want to transfer them to my iMac when i get home. Other times I transfer the camera's memory stick directly to my iMac.
I have great difficulty transferring the photos from my MacBook to my iMac. I don't want to store my photos on my iDisk due to the length of time it takes to upload them.
    Thanks again.
