Export unedited JPEG of a RAW image in LR4?

Other than the obvious to export images before I edit them, or duplicating and removing all alterations after selecting and editing I don't see an easy way to do this in LightRoom.  In Aperture I would select Export Original Photo, and then choose JPEG as format.  It appears to me that the only Export Original Photo option in LightRoom will do just that...export a true original - meaning in RAW format.  Not helpful.  I need to export JPEGs of my final selects, both in the edited form, and in the original unedited form as JPEGs.  Am I missing something?
On another similar note, is there any way to see the switch between the original unedited photo and the edited photo?Meaning true original, pre crop / rotation and all?  Love the option to see just the other adjustments, but I often would like to see what my crop has done as well to the image quickly.  Aperture had a true "Original Master" viewing capability.
Other than these two things, I am loving the transition to LightRoom!  So superior in almost every other way, but these are simple things that seem so obvious.
Thanks!

Not having used Aperture—I’m on a PC—I’ve never wanted to export all my picks as Adobe-Default-Settings JPGs; however, I subscribe to the PS+LR photographers bundle for $10/month, and can easily do what you’re talking about using LR and PS:
To get the Adobe default version of each LR pick I would:
Export Originals from LR for all these picks to their own folder.
Delete all the XMP files in that folder using an OS-level file function, in my case Explorer then sort by extension.
Open that folder in Bridge.
Select all and open in Camera Raw.
Select all in ACR and use the Save Image button to create default-setting JPGs.
For looking at the original uncropped version of something I’d go into Before-After mode, swap before and after, then turn it to single mode, again (with the Before image as the current view) then turn on the Crop box to see the entire extent of the image.  If the Before version isn’t the initial one, after swapping it to After, I could click Reset to get the very first version of it.
To make this work you’d have to swap go back to Before-After mode and swap things back so the After image is back as the current version.

I am using Lightroom 5.7, 64 bit with Windows 7 Professional. For no apparent reason, I now get an error message when I export a photo, say a raw image to a JPG. However, the exported image seems to be OK. But now I notice that my LR directory of folders in Library view does not show images correctly: If there is a folder with sub-folder(s), the folder will indicate 0 images, but the sub-folders show the proper number of images. What happened and is there a fix? I tried uninstalling Lightroom and re-installing, but problem persists.

  • LR 5 Raw images and some jpegs not showing even after Sync.

I have LR 5 (latest update).  When I was trying to edit a photo from 12/2013 I noticed that only the jpeg images were previewing.  I ran a sync of the folder which showed no files to import.  The files are there; I've used them, I can see them.    Looks like it's all the files in folder 2013 pics, but not 2014 pics. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks!

  • With existing large managed library, can I export only jpegs to a laptop?

    Hi folks,
The subject line is perhaps not well phrased, but I'm wondering is it possible to do the following: given that I have a large, well-established Aperture library with all of my RAWs on my desktop machine, is it possible to nicely export the JPEGs of those RAWs into a library file that could fit on my laptop, for preview purposes?
It'd be necessary to keep ratings and other metadata, of course, although I don't care about syncing any changes I make on the laptop back.

If you use referenced masters, then generate previews of all of your images (will take a long time). The previews live in the library. Copy that library to your laptop, then you can delete the previews in your main library.
Since you use managed masters, you'll have to relocate them temporarily.

  • IPhoto 6 library and RAW images

Trying to conserve disk space, I have burned my entire photo library off onto DVD's and started to import again, using the iPhoto 6 alias feature. (I didn't have a lot of keywords entered, so I didn't lose too much in the way of "organization"). I imported the first batch of RAW images and iphoto not only makes thumbnails, but a 1 - 2 meg JPEG of each RAW image. Granted, not as large as the RAW image itself, but I can see this eating up HD space just the same. Also, iPhoto doesn't keep track of the external drive (DVD in this case) that the images came from, so when I go to copy/edit/whatever any particular photo, I have to remember what disk its on (not that hard, since I put a comment in the roll comments box of the disk the roll is from). But, is this the acceptable norm for cataloging images???? I am really trying to figure out a way to use iPhoto as my image cataloging software, but so far it seems like a lot of hoops to jump through.

    Robert:
I've used the alias feature of iPhoto with jpgs with great success. But RAW files create a whole new problem with their accompanying jpg files, etc. I have all of my source files on an external HD so it's easier to manage than a lot of DVD disks. My 27G of source files, (17,000 photos), are represented by an alias library of 1.7G.
What you're experiencing with the disks is about the norm with image management applications working with off line source files. You need to know the ID of the disk the files are one so you can recover the full sized images easily. If your disks contain multiple folders of photos then you can add the disk name to the beginning of the roll name for easy sorting, etc.
You can use Albums for grouping rolls from the same disk. HOWEVER, don't use Smart Albums for that because there's a bug that will cause the library to crash and not open again if you go in and change the sorting within that smart album.

  • Opening a RAW image from RL4 Beta in PSS5.1 I get this error message!

I can't find any reference to the ACR-7 plug-in on the Adobe Labs site.
When I select the 'Render using Lightroom' option,  the rendered image looks the same as the RAW image in LR4 Beta,
that's good however you lose the Smart-Object capability, no more RAW image.
Will Adobe be releasing ACR 7 for CS5.1 or are we going to be expected to upgrade to Photoshop 6 :-( ?

Thanks for the update Victoria - although it probably confirms our worst fears!
I'm in agreement with the OP about this series of upgrading Photoshop just to keep Camera Raw in sync with Lightroom.
I've started a separate thread with a slightly different angle (ie the reliance and continued need for both Camera Raw and Lightroom
in the same workflow), and would be interested on your feelings on this... Thread is here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/950168?tstart=0

  • Lightroom 5.6 Export RAW to Resized JPEG Producing Poor Quality Images

I have the latest Lightroom 5.6 and am running into a problem that I never had EVER and I've been using the same workflow since LR1. I shoot in RAW and want to send my client JPEG proofs (resized to 1000px, 100% quality, and 96dpi, sRGB). I use the export feature and have tried everything, even saving the resized image at 300dpi but the export results are still absolutely horrible. The photo is muddled and blurry no matter what I try. This is obviously not a color space issue, or monitor/browser issue and as I said before, I've done resizing through LR plenty of times without this much compression loss. Anyone else running into this? What's the solution?
I took the same RAW file and exported to JPEG with resizing checked off and the image looked sharp as a tack like my RAW file in LR.
So, there is obviously something wrong with LR RAW to JPEG export when resizing. Which has NEVER been an issue before.
Adobe, seriously, get your S%&T together!

Never seen anything like that before. I export with resizing all the time. As long as the quality is somewhat up from 80% (100% is complete overkill) and I do appropriate output sharpening, the quality is always superb. Of course there is only so much you can do with a 1000 pixels so don't expect to zoom endlessly in on that. The ppi does not matter at all when you specify a size in pixels. Can you post an example?

  • Automatically export to JPEG from RAW images

RAW images are preferred form of shooting for many photographers. And, Lightroom is great at managing and developing these images. However, we increasingly use/view these images outside Lightroom and away from the PC where we do most of the development. For example, I use a DLNA server which shows off my entire image collection to big screen television (which can act as a DLNA client). The same DLNA server is used to send images to our smartphones (my wife loves to show all kid pictures anywhere she - without having to carry the pictures on the phone).
Most other applications that use these images, do not work on RAW images and JPEG images must be exported manually from Lightroom. This becomes increasingly difficult to manage and keep track of while developing RAW images. How many RAW images need to be exported? How many images did I touch since the last time I exported them?
Currently, I am using the following process to manage this:
    1. I created a smartlist which contains images that are edited after "a particular date".
    2.  I select all images in this smartlist, and use Lightroom3's export  function to export them all as JPEG, to the same folder as original.
    3. Once the export is completed, I modify the smartlist to change the "particular date" to today's date.
I plan to repeat this procedure every so often (once a week or so).
It would be great if Lightroom had a feature such that it always keeps "JPEGs exported" for all RAW images (with the latest development settings of course). This could be a process that could occur in the background or at a user-specified time/event (e.g. when one closes Lightroom). User should be able to specify where the exported JPEG images should be put to and with what name (I prefer in the same folder as RAW but other users may have other preferences). User should be able to select if this is only done for RAW images or also for JPEG and other formats (in which case, should the exported image override the original or not). The exported images should be (optionally) automatically included in the Lightroom catalogue and stacked with the original RAW image.
Mainly, the entire process should be completely transparent to the user. A collection of JPEG images - corresponding to the latest development settings for the RAW images - should be always available.
    Osho

I've heard many others raising the issue of an auto-jpeg feature - kinda like auto-write xmp, except auto-write jpeg.
I agree this would be nice, obviously some sort of "stability" check would be needed so it isnt constantly writing jpegs as you edit. Lightroom employs a form of this already for the xmp - meaning it doesn't update xmp every brush stroke, but accumulates several strokes before updating, so its more efficient...
If you could define multiple jpegs to keep - with the raws, or a separate tree - even better. That would obsolete all the tree output plugins and publishers.
The publishing feature was intended to fill this need (albeit manual only), but it suffers from the inability to publish to original directory, and/or an external tree.
I'd like to see a manual mode too, that accompanies a new "Done for now" function - so when you say "Done for now", it saves xmp, jpeg(s), snapshot, and optionally locks the file so unapproved changes can no longer happen to it. Then if you could define multiple "done for now" presets that include initiating publish service and exports, then the work-flow becomes: 1.import, 2.edit, 3.done for now - and thats it (maybe repeat 2 + 3 in the future). i.e. no more manually initiating the exports, publish services, snapshots, saving of xmp, ..., and whatever else you do when you're done.
In the mean time, I may make some of this part of an up-n-coming "Sidekick" app + plugin combo when I get to it.
Presently, I dont use publishing services, and I have ExportManager to consolidate exports (which includes TreeSync), so my workflow is: 1.import, 2.edit, 3.done for now (save xmp+snapshot, and lock via ChangeManager), 4. initiate consolidated exports...

  • After editing camera raw and export as jpeg, image becomes overexposed when view on light room..please advise.

need some help here. don't know if i can describe this accurately.
i was using lightroom previously. edit my raw file and then export in jpeg. everything appear normal as what i wanted.
recently i got cs4 and started using bridge. now after i edit my photo in lightroom and export, the view of the jpeg file appears overexpose(exposure was increase) and when view on adobe bridge same problem. but if i open photoshop and use my workspace colour setting everything is ok. when i see my picture on iphoto it is normal as per i have edited. i just don't know what setting i have touch that cause my viewing of edited photo on lightroom and bridge goes overexpose. on bridge, thumbnail ok but preview bad...
for the record: i just install CS4 and snow leopard recently. before this i have no problems with LR. I'm also not sure if i have accidentally change any settings.
i shoot with a 5D mark 2 and use the raw file for edit.
    will appreciate any advise. Thanks

Are any files moved or renamed or disks unplugged in between the time of export and the time when you try to edit again?

  • Problems Exporting RAW images to JPEG in Lightroom 1.1

I have used LR 1.1 with much success in editing, then exporting/burning JPEG images.  But now, I am shooting in camera RAW (Nikon D40x), and when I attempt to export the edited images to JPEG files, I get the message that an error has occurred during export, and the files do not burn to jpeg.  What can I do to correct this?

It will convert all images to jpegs, resize ... however you set it up ... and yes, it is so straightforward as it seems to be .
It makes no sense to upload RAW files to the web for public use in the first place. Second, LR does not touch/change the RAW files. Therefore, how would it be able to integrate your dev settings when using RAW on export?
You can add the ftp target in LR and it will upload directly to your web server.
If you choose Flash-based, people need to have the Adobe Flash player installed on their computer. The Flash player itself is not part of the LR setup. Most of people already have it installed and who doesnt will be asked to install it.

  • How do I Export Raw images from Iphoto to Adobe Photo Elements 4

I recently purchased Photo elements 4 because I could import images from Iphoto in Raw format and work with them. Everything I have read and the instructional video sent to me by Adobe make it look and sound very easy but so far I have had no success.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4. However I can not find my Raw images. What am I doing wrong or failing to do and is there some logical sequence that I have to follow to import Raw images.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
Thanks for any help you can provide

    dakota8,
iPhoto and Adobe Bridge are incompatible, so you need to decide which one you want to use (for which photos). iPhoto is a database, with many flexible features for organizing your library and finding your photos. Bridge is a file browser with some organizing capabilities. You absolutely should not use Bridge or any other application (Finder included) to browse the files inside your iPhoto Library folder, as it will damage the iPhoto database. To verify, click on iPhoto's Help and read the section "About using the iPhoto Library."
If you want to keep your RAW files in iPhoto, then you'll need to open them from iPhoto. As Dave E said, this can be done by setting the iPhoto pref to export RAW files. You also need to set PE 4 as the external editor in iPhoto's preferences. With this setup, you can select photos using iPhoto, open the RAW files into PE 4, then edit. Now comes the wrinkle in the workflow. Normally, you would do a Save to cause your edited file to be saved back into the iPhoto library. This Save, not Save As, requires that the filename and extension stay the same. Works great with jpeg files. However, once you edit the RAW, the extension (and file format) must change. Save will not work, because any save at this point is treated like a Save As. So you have to Save As to a folder OUTside of your iPhoto Library, and then import it in as a new file. There will be no link between the edited version and its unedited RAW file. You could organize inside iPhoto to display the edited file beside its original RAW, or keep separate rolls for the originals and edits.
With that in mind, you might not want to save the RAW files in iPhoto at all. You could create your own filing system for them, which you would browse using Bridge. Upload using Image Capture to save your files to a folder of your choice. Once you edit the RAW files and save as another format, you could them import into iPhoto for cataloging or further editing. You'll just have to find the system that works best for you.
BTW, don't save your edited RAW files as Adobe RAW. I tried and discovered that iPhoto refuses to import them at all.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4.
There's no transferring involved at all. Bridge is rooting directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Did I mention that it's best to avoid this?
However I can not find my Raw images.
When you import a file it is saved into the Originals folder. Your RAW files are there, along with any video clips you may have imported.
iPhoto automatically creates a jpeg version of your RAW files and stores it in the Modified folder. It has to do this in order to display the picture on your screen. With video clips, a jpeg of the first frame is created for display purposes.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
If you import both versions into iPhoto, then you have
    Originals - RAW
    Modified - jpeg
    Originals - jpeg
(Modified - jpeg - if you edit the jpeg version or if they are auto-rotated to portrait orientation)
I don't shoot in RAW, so I can't really comment about which workflow would be the most efficient. I just played with it long enough to realize that there is no easy way to do it.
    Regards.

  • Why does Raw image open in PSE 11 Editor as jpeg instead of as RAW image?

For several years I have been managing my photos in iphoto and using PSE as an external editor for editing images. I currently use PSE 11 on an iMac with OS X Lion (version 10.7.5). My iPhoto Library is divided into a number of sub-libraries via iPhoto Library Manager. I have unexpectedly encountered a problem attempting to edit a RAW image (in this case a .NEF image from a Nikon D200) in a sub-library containing images shot in 2007. When I right click on the image and select Edit in External Editor the image opens in PSE 11 Editor, but it opens as a jpeg and not as an .NEF image. This is in spite of the fact that in iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced/RAW Photos I have checked "Use RAW when using external editor."
As an alternative approach I tried dragging and dropping the RAW image into the PSE 11 Editor icon in the Dock, but I got the same result.
I can't recall having this problem previously and would appreciate knowing what might be the source of the problem along with a suggested fix.

I took a clue from both of your responses. I exported a copy of the original RAW file to my desktop. Then I went to PSE Editor and clicked File/Open and selected the RAW file on the desktop. This automatically changed the Format setting to Camera Raw. I then clicked Open and lo and behold my RAW file opens in Camera Raw!
I’m now where I want to be to edit this image in Camera RAW, but I never before had to go around the horn like this to get there! This is very similar to the procedure I follow when I edit jpegs in Camera Raw.
I’m happy to report that this workaround did the job, but I have no idea why it was necessary in this instance. Hopefully this issue will be confined to this one particular iPhoto sub-library!

  • Is Lightroom working on jpeg or raw image, if both are available?

Sorry all, I know this is out there somewhere, but my searching didn't come up with an answer.
If I shoot my original images with raw and jpeg simultaneously, and both image types are stored in the saved location, which of these is Lightroom using as it's starting point for editing? Another way to ask this question is, when I save my Lightroom changes, to which image is the parametric data applied? Is this a stupid question? I'm not sure why it matters, even to me, but I would like to know, although if I do an export of the modified image, I'd rather it make the 'changes' to the raw file, even if I'm exporting as jpeg. Or does it even matter? Am I just babbling like an idiot here? Am I totally messed up in my thinking? Please help, or tell me to just go away...

My "probing" question would be: why put both in the Library? If you work on just the RAW file, you'll save space, and never worry about which version of an image is current, etc. (Yes, I am aware that some just prefer to see how the camera converts the date to a JPEG)
    Good luck!

  • Cannot export original RAW images in one step

    Sigh....
Here we go again. Apple tries dumbing it down for everyone and gets rid of some important stuff in the process.
I used iPhoto as a ground level library for all my photography. And would easily import RAW images to my Lightroom collection.
Now you eliminate what used to be a very easy export process and made it more difficult. WHY TAKE THE "ORIGINAL" OUT OF THE EXPORT MENU? Why only jpeg and png???
I do not get you guys sometimes. Screwed up iMovie, now iPhoto.
Does anyone out there know of a shortcut to export originals without the multistep process required now?  I have 50-100 pix every day to export.
    Thank you.

WHY TAKE THE "ORIGINAL" OUT OF THE EXPORT MENU? Why only jpeg and png???
    Huh?
