Export via Motion or Compressor?

I have a 2-minute motion graphics video that I put together in Motion 3. I want to export it for the web (YouTube, etc.) and so I'm using H.264. Assuming I'm not getting into Compressor's fancy batching / clustering features, are there any advantages to exporting via Compressor as opposed to direct from Motion?
Thanks,
Scott

You haven't said if the original video you imported into Motion is MP4 or H.264 or some other highly compressed media. It won't matter what you export if those "damaged" frames are in the original (and mp4/h.264/etc are prone to bad frames at the very beginning and very end depending on how they were prep'd for delivery).
You should (I'd say always, except I'd be a hypocrite) transcode original media into ProRes (any flavor) before importing into Motion. Check frame by frame if you have to to see if there's any damaged frames (usually there won't be.) I'd highly recommend using Quicktime 7 Pro (it's still available from apple's online store at apple.com) to transcode your video. Others might recommend MPEGStreamclip (but I just can't); or if you have it: Compressor.
If you have Final Cut Pro X, you'd be better off editing video in that app. You should be designing your Motion "add-ons" as effects, titles, transitions or generators for use in FCPX and leaving the video completely out of Motion. FCPX also takes care of transcoding to prores for you (opt to Transcode Optimized Media when importing.)
PS - you'll get better performance out of Motion if you use ProRes video. (Same goes for AIFF/WAV audio and NOT mp3.)
Hope this helps... otherwise I don't know what the problem would be.

  • Exporting via Quicktime good Compressor=Bad

I'm perplexed! I send a 16:9 video SD out through Compressor and when i import that file into DVDstudio pro, it's 4:3 aspect.
Exporting through a self contained QT file and importing into DVD studio it retains its 16:9.
    Why does this happen???

What preset or settings did you use in Compressor?

  • Exporting via Compressor - submit - failed

When I use Export via Compressor - and I use QT Pro Res - and destination is Movies Folder, then submit - then in the History window it has returned "Failed" 3 times now. The status bar shows, but never any indication that it even starts to work its magic or anything - just after a few seconds, maybe a minute, the word Failed appears. Argh. The motn project is 5 minutes long full of stills and a little video with audio. Help - what am I doing wrong?
In looking thru this forum, I thot the best export would be QT ProRes - is that causing the failure?
I previously exported via QT(not compressor) and the resulting file is 10gb which doesn't run smoothly but jerks and hiccups like a pre-rendered file. And 10gb wont fit onto DVD which is where this project will go - as a gift.
    help

I surely do not take it personal. I have learned that you folks in this group are the best resource I have. I know I am in way over my head. I truly do not know about codecs.
I have taken Motion directly in to FCP - but I didn't think it would work this time. I should have tried.
Someone came along at work and told me to use Visual Hub and use setting for mp4, and also try using the DV - ready for FCP - I did both. I really never think of it as wasted effort if I can learn by what I doing, and that is occurring as you are all explaining to me what I should be doing.
Now as for workflow - I think I did the right thing by starting with Motion, then with the big file sizes went to Visual Hub - but probably could have just gone to opening the Motion files in FCP - then rendering out for DVSP.
System settings are a boggle to me - so I just use NTSC - DV 720x480 and hope that works - so far the results in my projects are good.
Again, Thank you for taking time to explain - I appreciate all comments.

  • Export from FCP via QT or Compressor into DVD Studio Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I'm editing in FCP and making a menued SD DVD. I've had success in laying out the DVD project.
The source material is low quality and duration overall a few minutes. I'm adding a few supers to the clips.
My question is, will I get better result exporting via compressor or via a QT export (using current settings PAL 25FPS 16:9)?
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve

what you're doing is actually fine. But, generally, the following workflow is reccommended. It gives you more control if not better quality. Depending on your source (large or small frame size) you can adjust resizing and motion compensation and other parameters:
export as QuickTime using "current settings." bring that resulting QT file into Compressor. Pick the DVD preset closest to the length of your project (e.g. 90 min best). From there you can select the preset in the project and adjust it.

  • Fragmented movement upon exporting via Compressor

I'm doing an animation project in Motion 3. When I try to export using Compressor there are artifacts all over the place. The animation is of 9 birds created with replicator flying across the screen. I created a single bird flying from photoshop files. I made a quicktime movie of the single bird, imported it into a new file. I used the movie of this bird to replicate and make the group fly across the screen. When I look at the group with RAM preview in Motion all looks well. When I export them with compressor, everything goes haywire and they don't fly right. Their wings become fragmented. I'm not sure how to attach the files to this post, but if it is possible I could send them and maybe someone could tell me what's going on. The file is 960 x 540 at 23.98 fps. I tried exporting using both the animation codec and the ProRes codec, but had the same problem in both.
I'm working on a MacPro Quad-Core with 26 GB of Ram. NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. I just got this computer, but I had the same problem on my old computer. I thought the old computer was too dated and maybe that is why it was happening, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. BTW, also had the same problem in Motion 2.
I sure hope someone can shed some light on this. I'm guessing I might have something set up wrong.
    Thanks, Ellen

    hi moonduck
can't solve the problem, but might have a work around. i often have problems with using compressor via motion. But all problems disappear if I drag the motion project into fcp and export through compressor from there.

  • Motion 5 not exporting Play Range with Compressor

I've been trying to export portions of certain Motion projects, but I prefer to use Compressor to take advantage of my cluster. However, Compressor insists on ignoring the "Duration" setting. It will only ever export the "Entire Sequence", and if "In/Out Points" is selected, it won't care.
I've tried this in every possible permutation of Compressor exporting. I've clicked Send to Compressor, both in the menu and through the Export Movie>Advanced dialog, and even using Export using Compressor Settings. Every single option completely ignores my play range.
Meanwhile, exporting through Motion handles the play range fine, but it's slower and more crash-prone than Compressor.
This is a bug, right? I'm not missing something obvious? (Yes, I have Compressor 4)

In/Out points inside Motion are ignored when you Send To Compressor.  Inside Compressor you need to manually set In/Out points in the Compressor Preview window.

  • Export in Motion vs. Compressor 2.1

My project takes about 2 minutes to render out directly from Motion, but compressor says its going to take 3 hours?
I know the compressor speed issue was a big deal for a while there, but I never noticed anything like this.
I am trying to render out to Pixlet video at 640 x 480.
My timeline contains an animation codec movie with alpha transparency and a few graphic layers...with audio (3 tracks)..
When I export using motion 2 it takes about 2 minutes...if I say go from compressor, then go over to compressor and hit submit...it takes forever to start, then it crawls and I quit...
I have 24 sequences each of the same length etc...would love a batch, but it will just be faster to do this one by hand I guess???

You might try Batch Export from FCP...

  • NEW & IMPROVED! Export Via Compressor

I just noticed that Export via Compressor no longer ties up FCP! Once you submit your batch, you're free to go back into FCP, close that project and open another and work.
    Sweetness.
I'm on 5.1.4, not sure when this was implemented.

    EDIT, FALSE ALARM.
I just realized after I posted the topic that I had added a surround sound group to my batch before submitting it. When I looked at the monitor, it was working on the surround sound group. Once it hit the stuff off the timeline, it grabbed FCP again, so, false alarm.

  • Export via Compressor

    Hello
I just finish making my video in FCP X, i would like to export it now using compressor, i prefer to not lose much uality, and i want to export it to .m2ts file (AVCHD) but i have no idea how?
(video is about 18min long, 10-15GB size is ok)
I want the video to be in 50fps, what im doing is, i choose a "H.264 For BluRay" preset in Compressor, then i change the BluRay to AVCHD, but then its impossible to change any of the preset settings, like audio, fps and so on.
Could anyone post a screenshot of good settings?
    Thank you

You can set MPEG-4 up to 59.94, including 50fps.
I didn't adjust it all. You might want to push the bit rate a little higher.

  • Artifacts when rending a simple two minute video from Motion or Compressor

I keep getting artifacts randomly throughout the videos I export, whether i export directly from motion or via compressor, and regardless of which "Share" option I choose or which codec I use (including ProRes - all of them). I've tried literally every preset and even made my own. Its very frustrating because even one artifact messes up the whole video and I have to export it again.
The artifacts show up randomly throughout the videos so its not one particular asset that is a problem. And sometimes it even exports perfectly except that a video at the end (which is admittedly not from a high quality source) shows up SUPER pixelated. This is just as bad.
I've spent the last 48 hours rendering and rerendering the videos. Saving as a new motion file. Clearing cache and library files and pram and restarting. Nothing helps.
This is on top of the fact that I have, in the past, exported properly from compressor (but never from motion for anything more than a few seconds). And I tired this on two computers, one more powerful than the other. One computer is a Macbook Pro w/ core i7, SSD, and 8gb ram. The other was a Macbook air with Core2Duo and 4gb ram. Both of them sucked at exporting the movie. (The air was slower but actually better than the macbook pro.) I'm on the latest mavericks and the latest motion and compressor.
HELP! PLEASE! I dont know what to do!

  • Motion. Compressor and FCP

Really pleased that FCP now supports 720/50p but the ProApps 2007/02 update has broken Motion, FCP and Comprossor. In Motion I can't open the Library or File Explorer. In FCP the Motion Master Templates won't let me drop clips into the drop zones, which is exactaly what I've been doing in my present project. I've tried reinstalling and, if I don't upgrade Motion it works, but if I upgrade FCP to 6.0.2 the Motion templates don't work. Compressor just doesn't open.
HELP! I'm in the middle of an edit and northing's working. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Sort of – by exporting and reimporting as clips. There is no round-tripping. For example, you can't send a clip as a Motion project to Motion4, save and have the clip update in FCP. You'd have to export a clip (or sequence) as a self-contained movie and bring it into Motion (or Compressor), make your changes, exporty and reimport as a clip, see how you liked the result, etc. Much easiier to stay within FCS.

  • No export form Motion

Hi - reaching critical point on a project and typicall the problkems are kicking in. I can't seem to export from Motion having had no problems up to this point. I'm working in Motion 3.0.2 on Leopard with a title sequence that uses PSD files.
When I tyr to export, it barelt dos the first frame, stops exporting and produces a blank 8kb quicktime, regardless of codec / export setting.
I went through compressor as a last measure and this seemed to work ok, but is certainly not my first choice as I would like to keep the Motion blur setting which as far as I am aware is only available when exporting directly from Motion. That, and it SHOULD all work fine!
    Any ideas out there??
    Many thanks,
    Dave

    hi,
I have a few issues with exporting from motion as well. The thing that always seems to work for me is to import the motion file into fcp and export from there. Not aware if the blur is retained or not. Pretty stoopid if not.

  • Trouble Exporting from Motion

I've been having problems exporting my Motion Projects out of Motion. I've been working on a 30sec spot 100% animated (no 3D), the project is set for DVDCPRO HD 1080i60 and I just cant get it out properly.
Fades that worked in the project are missing in the exported file, pictures somehow become corrupted/distorted in the exported file, and I have also noticed the top bar in leopard often turns partially or completely black after export, and motion crashes soon afterwards.
When exporting from motion I notice my processors aren't being used much. I have tired dropping the motion project directly into compressor but I get even more errors and strange green distortion on the exported file.
It takes about an hour and a half to export the 30 sec spot under maximum settings, (motion blur, frame blending, and all that) and I have an ATI RadeonX1900 with 512 VRAM.
Is my computer to underpowered, or my graphics card, or both? Suggestions please?

Hope you get some better advice soon. Meantime, try to copy and then paste some layers into independent projects, render them out as self-contained movies. See what happens to them. What you want to try to do is separate out pieces you can pre-render and then bring back in as movies. This eliminates tons of layers processing and might clear up some issues. Also helps you isolate issues with possibly corrupt media.
Can't help you on the Leopard stuff. We've had dozens of Motion/leopard conflicts posted over the last several months.

  • Exporting from FCP to Compressor, FCP causes crashes

When I export a particular FCP sequence to Compressor (with the intention of then moving on to DVD Studio Pro with the resultant compressed video and audio file)on first gesture to export I receive a message saying one render file is missing. However, when I was in FCP before launching Compressor, the sequence showed nothing that needed rendering. When I "render both" from the sequence menu, there is nothing to render. When I watch the sequence in FCP it views perfectly. Then I export using compressor. I receive the message that a render file is missing. I tell the system to continue without this one render file since I have no evidence that the file is missing. I then set off the compressor work, and it grinds away. Ultimately sometime in the two plus hour processing period (the sequence is 8 minutes long) FCP generates an error and Compressor aborts its work, blaming FCP. Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it? Please let me know if you need further info. As always, I am up against a deadline with this final output. The behavior is one I have never seen before in the four years I have been using this software. Thanks in advance.

Do you have motion files on the time line - a Google search shows posts about this problem:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1013775
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1460437
I would export a Quicktime Movie from your timeline File > Export > Quicktime Movie using current settings, then take that exported Quicktime Movie into compressor as opposed to trying to go direct from the FCP timeline.
Also, is you timeline fully rendered? Have you placed a checkmark on every Render condition -
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/RenderMarksChecked.jpg!
and then clicked on the timeline, typed Command + A to select all then Command + R to render the whole timeline?
    Hope this helps.
