Export vs. print to jpeg

I have prepared a print file for HP Photo  Creations using export and another one usint print to jpeg.  When I compare them they seem identical.  Is one approach better than the the other?

The export gives you a little more options (like sizing) than print to JPEG, whereas print to JPEG has the advantage of prepared layouts (like several images per page). In terms of image quality, they're the same as long as you use the same options on both sides (like color space, quality, PPI).

  • LR2: export jpg sRGB vs. print to jpeg sRGB - Same colors in MS explorer preview?

    Hello !
    Im using LR2 and do have problems understanding why "printing" to jpeg and exporting to jpeg give different results (colorwise) in the following case:
    The first picture was exported using "jpeg" file format and "sRGB" color space.
    The second picture was "printed" to jpeg using "sRGB" profile and rendering intend etiher "perceptual" or "relative" (doesn't matter).
    I was just wondering, why in explorer preview(MS Windows XP sp3 with a calibrated monitor) colors of both pictures look different. The "printed" jpeg does have less red in it.
    shouldn't the look the same in this case?
    Did I miss something here?
    Any hints appreciated.
    Thank you very much

    Hello,
    thanks for pointing me to the related threads.
    Indeed the results of the LR2 functions "print to jpeg" and "slideshow to jpeg" are dependent of the current monitor profile being used.
    Here are my expamples:

    if you have a closer look, it becomes more obvious:

  • Help with exporting and printing

    I only recently started to use FW and I am stuck and can't

    is always to big for the paper. I know I can shrink it but wouldn't

    I guess your problem is too small resolution. Create youre
    image at
    resolution like 200 ppi. As long as I remember Word 2003
    correctly reads
    PNG resolution, so after creating and saving the image you
    may try simply
    importing the image saved in FW into Word.

  • Export for printing

    I'm trying to export a full-sized jpeg from my Nikon D610 RAW file. When I go to the export screen, I'm faced with a number of options that include "file settings" and "image sizing". The "file settings" section can be controlled for 100 quality to output a jpeg with no file size limit. However, in the "image sizing" section, I'm forced to pick a ppi resolution. I don't want to pick a resolution ... I simply want to export the maximum jpeg file from my RAW image. In Apple's Aperture software, I can simply select "original size" and it exports clean, maximized jpegs that print perfectly every time. With Lightroom, I'm baffled that I can't do something so simple.  How can I do this type of export in Lightroom 5? Thanks all!  Mark

    Sorry Mark, but I beg to disagree.
    If the "Resize" box is not ticked then the pixel size of your exported file is identical to the original image file.
    and you are never "forced" to enter any ppi in that field of the resize panel;.
    If you set ppi to 1 then an image 3000pixels wide will appear 3000 inches wide.
    If you set ppi to 60000 then an image 3000pixels wide will appear 0.05 inch wide.
    BUT the PIXEL SIZE is still the same =3000pixels wide!
    Below is a very long Q&A, similar to your question, that I have copied from another post on resizing (and I forget who to credit for this answer)- have a read.
    Q.        Something has changed in my Export settings and I can't figure it out.  If I insert a file into any application (i.e. PowerPoint, Word, Publisher) that I exported from LR5.7 previous to last week, the images look fine . If I export a new image, the file size is large (10MB), but when I insert it into any application, the image itself is extremely small . I know it is not the picture itself, because I have tried it with images that have worked in the past that worked and now are experiencing the same issue. If I try to resize it in the program the image itself just becomes very distorted and pixelated. Any thoughts on what is wrong or what I screwed. I also included an image of my LR Export window
    You have set your PPI (resolution) to 5000 pixels per inch. This does not affect the actual number of pixels contained in the image, but it can affect what happens to the image when it is brought into some applications - mainly, applications where the image is being placed onto some kind of a page.
    In particular, with "desktop publishing"  type programs, the application assumes that the stated physical size of the image (which is notionally calculated from the number of pixels in the image, combined with the PPI setting) has been "intended". And what you see within the program may not be the actual image, but instead a preview image made for some standardised PPI resolution.
    To take a specific example: if you export a 5000px wide photo, and you set 5000ppi, and place it within a page layout program, that program will be thinking of it as a one inch wide image. If it makes a preview image for its own working purposes at 72ppi, then this preview will accordingly be 72 pixels wide - and will therefore look much cruder than your 5000px wide original would have done, as you manipulate this previewed image on screen.
    On the other hand, if you export a 5000px wide photo, and you set 50ppi, and do everything else the same - the application will be treating this not as a 1" wide image, but as a 100" wide image, and its preview image (through this difference alone; remembering, the image file is unchanged except for the PPI setting) will in that case, be 7200px wide instead of 72px wide. And you will see every detail of the photo, whether that is appropriate or not... and the publication's saved file size will be much bigger, and it may be slower and more inconvenient to work with due to the sheer number of pixels in this preview,
    The usual advice is perfectly correct, that if you have not set a physical size for your export (in inches or centimetres) then the PPI setting is not doing anything so far as the number of pixels in the exported image. But as you have discovered, it may still be a good idea to set this to some more moderate figure - and one very common convention for this, is 300ppi.

  • Is there a way to export a slideshow to JPEG without a background?

    Hi, I'm using LR4 to do a basic sign with many text overlays on a background image in Slideshow.  I would like to export this image as a jpeg and then print it as an 8x10 to put in a frame.  However, when I export the slideshow to jpeg or PDF, I'm getting the black background behind the image.  I have nothing checked in the "Backdrop" menu on the right hand side.  Is there any way to remove this background in slideshow?  Is there a way to do this in another module instead?  I want more than just a watermark so didn't think Print was the right way to go.
    Example of my print preview below with black background.

    Looks like you won't need to use the Develop module–Follow the below instructions
    1) An 8" x 10"  image with 300 ppi resolution = 2400 x 3000 pixel dimensions. Make sure your background image has at least that resolution or higher!
    2) Next from inside the LR Slideshow module drag the 'Top' guide all the up so the image fills the frame vertically:
    3) Next go to 'Export JPEG Slideshow' and manually enter Width = 2400 & Height= 3000. The exported Slideshow JPEG should be perfectly cropped and sized providing the original background image is 8x10 aspect ratio:
    4) You are ready to make your print!
    P.S. Please excuse my typo showing 3000 x 24000 it should read 3000 x 2400!

  • Print to JPEG File

    For enlargements to be sent to a photo lab, I mostly use the option "Print to JPEG file" because this alows me the have wider borders than the photo lab's own, small borders. However, exporting to a JPEG file requires that a name be entered each and every time. It would be a very welcome feature for LR to autocomplete the photo's existing name, similar to what is done when "exporting" to JPG. It would certainly make my workflow easier and quicker.

    What do you mean by lower quality? If I export at the same quality setting and scale to the same pixel size/resolution in both export and Print, I cannot really see any significant difference. They use the same scaler and the same compression algorithm as far as I know.

  • Why are my files exporting so small? (15 mb RAW files exporting to 2 mb JPEG)

    I'm trying to export RAW files into JPEG for a client and haven't experienced this issue before. I shot on large format RAW and original files are around 15 mb. When I export them in lightroom they end up around 2 mb. I know that I can still print large files from this but I'm worried that my (wedding) clients will see the file size and worry about enlarging prints, etc. Is there a way to export them so they are larger? I'm currently exporting at 100%. Help please!

    File size really doesn't provide useful information. And since JPG is compression, I see nothing unusual about a 15mb original RAW exported as 2mb JPG. If you are worried about file size, then you are not looking at the right numbers.
    You need to look at number of pixels in the original image, and number of pixels in the exported file. Anything else will lead you in the wrong direction.

  • Print to JPEG problem, color management

    I tried the print module option "Prin to JPEG File". I have compared the result with Photoshop CS3: the colors appear more muted with LR2 than with PSCS3. The color management parameters are the same in both programs:
    Profile: sRGB
    Rendering intent: Relative
    Have you experienced the same problem?
    Thank you.

    I got the same problem.
    From the tests I've done, the "print to jpeg" function produces a file in the display profile, whatever profile it is tagged.
    LR2.4 WinXPSP2, and it has been replicated by another user on LR2.5 with vista64b (link in french). Didn't try with LR3beta yet, but will soon.
    1) export a file as sRGB to make a reference, which will be called 'the export'.
    2) set it as a full page in the print module, and 'print' as jpeg with the sRGB profile : when opened in PS besides the export, it is quite different, and to restore colors you have to assign the display profile to it (not convert).
    3) another 'print as jpeg' of this file with another color space (AdobeRGB eg) is similar to 2 in non-color-managed apps (say IrfanView, that means that RGB numbers are the same) and consequently different in PS : again, you have to assign the display profile to make it look like the export.
    My personal conclusion : the print to jpeg exports files with RGB numbers relative to the display profile, tagged with the profile the user asked for.
    Can anyone replicate this, on the Mac side maybe?
    I'd think it's worth a bug report?

  • IPhoto09 Export has both a "JPEG quality" and a "Size" option

    In iPhoto09 Export has both a "JPEG quality" and a "Size" option. What is the difference? iPhoto Help does not clarify. Size seeems to constrain the size of photo on screen, and it is not stretchable. 300 dpi no matter what options are selected.

    Jpeg Quality is the amount of compression applied to the file.
    Size is the dimensions of the shot - length by breadth - measured in pixels.
    There is no dpi setting, nor any default setting for dpi. Dpi is sent when you decide the dimensions of the photo when you print.

  • Export a report as JPEG format

    Hi,
    From the Reporting Services 2005 Documentation, it mentions that a report can be rendered as a JPEG format.  Here is a quote from the aritcle:
    "The Image rendering extension renders a report to a bitmap or metafile. By default, the Image rendering extension produces a TIFF file of the report, which can be viewed in multiple pages. When the client receives the image, it can be displayed in an image viewer and printed.
    The Image rendering extension can generate files in any of the formats supported by GDI+: BMP, EMF, GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. For TIFF format, the file name of the primary stream is ReportName.tif. For all other formats, which render as a single page per file, the file name is ReportName_Page.ext where .ext is the file extension for the chosen format."
    But I only see TIFF to be the only available image format in the Render format drop down list.
    Could somebody please tell me how to export a report in JPEG format?
    Thank you in advance.

    The image format is controlled via the deviceinfo setting on the renderer.  There is no way to set this from the UI.  It can only be done programatically or by direct url access.
    However, you can specify default deviceinfo settings in the config file.  So you could add another instance of the image renderer with a default to jpg.  Add the following code to rsreportserver.config under Configuration/Extensions/Render:
        <Extension Name="JPG" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.ImageRenderer.ImageReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.ImageRendering">
            <OverrideNames>
                <Name Language="en-us">JPG</Name>
            </OverrideNames>
            <Configuration>
                <DeviceInfo>
                    <OutputFormat>JPEG</OutputFormat>
                </DeviceInfo>
            </Configuration>
        </Extension>

  • "Missing parameter values."  --  Export and Print only...

    I have a web application and I am using CrystalReportViewer.  I am passing several parameters to Crystal using:
    report.SetParameterValue(field.Name, Session[field.Name]);
    I have session variables which will hold parameters needed to pass into the report.  The session variables are populated from controls on my webpage after an onclick event.  This even not only populates session, but also passes parameters to the report with the following code:
    ReportDocument report = new ReportDocument();
    Session["MapPathName"] = "./Reporting/CaseStudy.rpt";
    report.FileName = Server.MapPath(Session["MapPathName"].ToString());
    ParameterFields fields = new CrystalDecisions.Shared.ParameterFields();
    fields = report.ParameterFields;
    foreach (ParameterField field in fields)
          report.SetParameterValue(field.Name, Session[field.Name]);
    CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = report;
    This works great for reporting and is very extensible.  However, when clicking on the "Print" or "Export" buttons on the toolbar I get "Missing parameter values."  I attempted to export manually in code using the .ExportToStream function but I still get the error, "Missing parameter values."
    I received this error also in Refresh, Search, and Navigate functions.  This was corrected by calling a function that supplies the above code block to these functions.  However, I do not see any events for controlling the Print nor the Export events.
    QUESTION: How can I print or export a report when passing parameters using CrystalReportViewer?  Thanks in advance!

    There are no Export or Print events accessible for the viewer
    Since it sounds like you are creating the reportdocument object in your click event, the settings on this object become out of scope on successive postbacks executed by other events.
    to get around this without major changes, you can place your "report" object in session in this event and retrieve it from session on successive postbacks.  This should solve your problems around navigation, printing and exporting.  What you will need to do is check if the session object exists (usually in page_load or page_initialze) and if so, retrieve it from session and bind it to the viewer's reportsource.  If the session object does not exist, then do nothing (ie you have not clicked your button yet that retrieves the parameter values from session and loads the report).  Also, in your click event you can check if the report session object exists and if so, remove it so that it can be re-created with your new parameter values (ie i'm assuming the only time you want to set parameter values is in this event).

  • Crystal Reports export and print fails with SSL / https but works with http

    Windows 2008 Server, 32-bit (IIS7)
    ASP.NET 2.0
    Ajax 1.0
    Crystal Reports version 10.5.3700.0
    http:  printing works, export works
    https:  printing not working, only export to MS Excel and MS Word work.
    I am able to generate reports using both http and https, and the toolbar icons are all showing.  However, I am unable to print or export properly with SSL.
    Printing prompts me with a select printer window, and then a window 'Retrieving Page 1' follow by two messages from Crystal Print Control both stating:
    A communication error occured.  Printing will be stopped.
    Exporting generates various errors depending on which export method is being selected (however Excel and Word work over https).
    I've found the same problem on this site and other forums, but never a resolution to get exporting and printing to work with SSL.  Will someone please provide me assistance or possibly relay what settings they're using if they have Crystal Reports export or printing working over SSL in IIS7?  Everything works fine when I change the address from https to http.
    Please let me know if I can help by providing further information.  We've gone through a great deal of possible solutions with code and I'm currently looking in to IIS settings again.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Ludek. I got it by searching KB number.
    Unfortunately, it didn’t fix my problem even my IE (IE8 and IE 9) has correct setting.  I double check my version. PrintControl.CAB is version 10.2.0.1146. we use VS 2005 Crystal report and VB .NET. It works fine on HTTP. But when we use HTTPS (SSL Certificate from go daddy).
    1: Crystal report export
                Export to MS Excel, Word: pop us “File download”, then click “Save”. It says “Internet Explorer cannot download ReportView.aspx from my site. • Is there a way to export and print the browser data as a spread sheet?

    I'm in the process of logging approximately 1,500 shots for a documentary (the old fashioned way - long hand: shot #, TC in, descriptions... ) and I'm wondering if there's a way to export and print the data in the browser as a spread sheet.  It seems like a pretty simple thing, but I don't see it any where. Am I missing something?

    Yes, people I work with use it, assistants fill the fields out for me. As far as I know there is no "Print Browser" option. Some folks have assistants copy and paste the info into text, csv or xml files.    Since everthing has gone to meta tags, this approach is going the way of the electric spoon or feeding mayonnaise to Tuna.

    Yes, the printer is on, it’s selected in Printer Set-Up & I’ve never had this problem before. It’s definitely a Photoshop issue as every other type of file prints fine. I’ve uninstalled Pshop & am now reinstalling. Hope that will do the trick.

  • CR 2008 paramteres, export and print windows language localization

    Hi, i want to use in my application Crystal Reports. I installed a trail version of CR 2008. My application is written in Delphi 7. I connected my application with Crystal Reports through the official VCL downloaded from http://ftp1.businessobjects.com/outgoing/products/vcl/crystalvcl11.zip and edited it to work with CR 2008 (12.x.x.x).
    Everything works with this VCL. When i have parameters the Enter Values window where i enter the values for parameters and in the Viewer window the Export and Print Dialog are in English. I want to have them in Polish Language ( or operating system language). In CR i set in View -> Preferred Viewing Locale -> More ... Polish but the viewer window, export, print and parameters are still in English. I tried this also on computers without installed CR 2008 but installed CR Runtime and it is still English.
    Operating system in Windows XP SP3 Polish.
    Any ideas what i can do to have this windows localized in my language?
    Robert

    Hello Robert:
    I am not sure that you will be able to do much. The VCL has not been updated since version 10 of Crystal Reports and it may be that the functionality you require will just simply not be possible. (I'll get someone else who used to work with the VCL to have a look too.)
    In the meantime, you may want to have a look at the following:
    Go [here|http://devlibrary.businessobjects.com/BusinessObjectsXIR2SP2/en/devsuite.htm], then check out Crystal Reports .NET SDK > Tutorials and Sample Code > Other Tutorials > Configuring Multilingual Client Support. (The above is for CR XI R2, it's the same for CR 2008 - I just don't have a link handy.) I am not sure if the above will help.
    Also, note that you do not have to use the VCL. You can use the CR assemblies for .NET with Delphi. See the following for more details:
