Exported PDF opening behind InDesign

Hi everyone,
This is just an annoying little thing.  I have recently upgraded to CS5, now whenever I export to a PDF, the PDF window opens up behind the InDesign window. Is there anyway I can make it open at the front as it did before?
Thanks in advance.
Simon

Here is an image I think might help... When I choose any of the size options, (fit, actual size, shrink oversized pages, or custom scale) it prints the doument exactly how I see in the preview whether or not I have the "Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size" box checked.

  • Printing an exported PDF file from InDesign

I have exported a few documents form InDesign to PDF. When I print the documents, some parts get cut off (top section or bottom section) but there is still room on the paper. I'ts like the printer decides not to print those sections. I am printing on 5x7inch paper and all my documents show their sizes as 5x7inches.

  • Exporting pdf's from InDesign

I'm looking for a simple and effective way to export my InDesign document as single page pdf files, with a specific filename suffix. I'm hoping that the file name suffix can come from the numbering and section options from my InDesign document.
To be specific, I have a 12 page document, each section being 2 pages or more. What I need is single page pdf files with the follwoing naming convention filename_sec[n].pdf. If I extract as separate pages through Acrobat, it will only make filename [n].pdf, not what we need.
I'm using InDesign CS3 and Acrobat 8, all part of Design Standard CS3. Any help is appreciated. Any direct specific questions or advice, please email [email protected]

"looking for a simple and effective way to export my InDesign document as single page pdf files"
You may have to define a custom page layout size in InDesign that can hold all of the content.
"hoping that the file name suffix can come from the numbering and section options from my InDesign document"
Not certain this can be achieved automatically or by a Preferences setting.

  • Exporting PDF's in InDesign cs5 (grey rectangles very small file)

    Hello there,
I am having an issue where I export a PDF and it comes out with all my pannels on each page as a grey rectangle with diagonal lines. Also the file is only about 57KB when it should around 4MB for what I'm trying to do.
This is what I'm doing and my settings:
    Fire>Export...
    Save
    Then my settings are
    [High Quality Print]
I tried changing the optional settings within that as well, but it doesn't seem to be fixing the problem.
Any idea's? I would appreciote it a lot.

Please repost in the InDesign forum.

  • Is there a way to export (or open) an InDesign CC layered document with Photoshop CC?

I'd like to be able to visually design websites in InDesign CC as opposed to using Photoshop. But, the end result needs to be delivered in a layered, Photoshop file.
I have read about scripts that are available but it looks like that information is fairly dated. I was wondering if this might be a new feature.
    Any suggestions!

  • INdesign CS3 suddenly crashes when trying to export pdfs

I have exported PDF-x1as from Indesign for years with no issues. Suddenly today, indesign crashes when I select EXPORT. I have indesign CS3 on a macbook pro running 10.5.8.
I work from home, and have to get some pretty huge projects out to the printer, and so I'm getting nervous about this not workling!! I'm trying to remain calm.
I've restarted indesign with the control, option, and shift keys down, supposedly renewing the prefs. When that didn't work, I reinstalled it from my original disks. Still doing the same thing.
Please say someone knows a fix!!!

ok - I've spent countless hours now searching for an answer. I was about to upgrade to snow leopard hoping that would solve this issue, when, buried deep somewhere in these forums, I found the solution that, at least so far, has worked for me! Here it is, in case anyone else is having issues:

  • Indesign CS3 text frame parameters and export PDF

could use some help with the following:
I need to edit and export a large number (7000) Indesign documents (one page)
    1. check for locked text frames and unlock
    2. group all text frames
    3. set grouped text frames at x=8 millimeters, y 10 milimeters
    4. export the documents to PDF in a subfolder called "Out"
    5. save and close the documents in the same subfolder as an Indesign CS3 document (orig is CS2)
This is what I've been trying soo far:
Now only checking one text frame - should be all text frames
"close document 1 saving yes" doesn't work because the originals are from CS2
I get a PDF called "Adobe Indesign SC3"
set processFolder to choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder that contains Innd Docs to process"
    tell application "Finder"
if not (exists folder "OUT" of processFolder) then
    make new folder at processFolder with properties {name:"OUT"}

    end timeout
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell

    end
Any help is greatly appreciated - Doing this manually is a lot of work!!!!!

You're asking for the name of the application, not the document -- you need<br />to do it after your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />You could also get the name from the alias you open, rather than the open<br />document, something like:<br /><br />repeat with thisFile in listFiles<br />set oldDelims to AppleScript's text item delimiters<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {":"}<br />set docName to text item -1 of (thisFile as Unicode text)<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldDelims<br /><br />You should also move your "set properties of view preferences" line to after<br />your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />-- <br />Shane Stanley <[email protected]>

  • Cannot open .pdf created by InDesign CS6, can open all other .pdfs

I just got InDesign CS6 at work (I use CC at home, but my company could not afford the CC subscription). I'm on PC with the minimum specs for InDesign and Photoshop Elements (also just installed). I have never been able to print to .pdf from InDesign; the program hangs. I have been doing Export to .pdf, press quality with my printer's specs. This has been working fine, except that, on occasion, I have to export the .pdf a few times to get it to open; it will give me an "either not a supported file or damaged" error message. Up until today, I have been able to export 2-3 times and would always get a .pdf that would open.
As of today, I cannot open any .pdf at all; I get that same "not supported or damaged" error message. However, if I let my computer sit idle for about 30 minutes, it will open. In addition, after exporting, InDesign hangs on a background task of "Export " 5" and I have to close out of that task to do anything further in the program.
I have read the forums on these issues and done what I can: I have installed all updates, backsaved to earlier Acrobat versions, exported to .idml, etc. Nothing helps.
I will confess that I am not the most technically-savvy person by any means. My company is small and does not have an IT person, nor is there a budget for calling someone in, so it is up to me and my admittedly limited understanding of this software to fix this issue.
    Help?

You may have shown me part of the problem. I can't share one of the files I'm working on, as they're full of images and we have client protections that make sharing problematic, but I did try to recreate a new file with garbage text and graphics and that .pdf opened without any problem.
Could this be a file size issue? The files I'm working on are only 8,900 kb and 200 kb. That doesn't seem too large to me, but perhaps it's enough to cause a problem on my machine.

  • I can't open PDF files in InDesign CS5

    Hi all,
I can't seem to open any PDF files of any version while using InDesign CS5...
I'm currently running InDesign in Windows 7 Professional x32bit...
    This message keeps popping up:
Cannot open the file "TIG_Sheet_and_Application.pdf". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
I've made sure that the file was not open in any application, and its not just this particular pdf files... all PDF files can't be opened. The only thing that actually opens in InDesign are the indd files...
I try going through the plug-in list, but there's a bunch and I'm not sure which one is it...
Tried google search for a solution but found no solution...
    Can anyone help me?
    Cheers,

krystlew, and others reading this thread and considering the answers "snarky" or "not helpful": note that this is the InDesign SDK forum -- that is, a question posted here should be about programming for InDesign:
    About this Forum
The InDesign SDK forum is for discussions on InDesign plugin development using the InDesign SDK. InDesign plugins are developed in C++.
Presumably, you found this discussion because the error message lead you here: that you cannot "open" a PDF. That's InDesign's usual message for all content that it cannot 'open' with the command "File > Open..."; try for example with a Word document, a JPEG image, or an Excel spreadsheet. InDesign is perfectly able to import these files -- but you cannot use "File > Open...". You must use the command "File > Place..." instead. "Placing a PDF" is described in the online Help: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/placing-graphics.html
It is a regular User Interface question and so unrelated to what this forum is for. General InDesign questions can be asked in the regular user forum: https://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign/content
I believe that the original question was posted in error in this forum and thus got interpreted as "what do I need to code to natively open PDFs". The answer is: lots. InDesign does not provide anything to natively read a PDF, so you would have to program literally everything.
(Some of the other posts ask why InDesign cannot already do this -- and the answer is, "Because It Is Incredibly Hard". The counterargument I usually give is that InDesign can also import (place) and export JPEG images and yet it is not a JPEG Editor. I can provide technical arguments as well. One is, there are lots of ways to construct PDFs in such a way that important content information is lost -- even something as basic as "what text is actually here".
... So, kudo's to Markzware for making it possible anyway! If you found this post because you need to convert a PDF file to a native, editable InDesign document, try their software.)

  • InDesign exported pdf viewed in Adobe Reader & Acrobat + Transparency

    Hi.
In InDesign I have a tiff image with a blue color background. This image is on top of a colored rectangle with the same blue. I have matched the color settings so it does infact match & prints out well from InDesign. I also have a couple feathered images in InDesign as well.
I made the destination color under the export pdf Output section match the color working space.
As I said..everything prints well from InDesign.
I make a .pdf & open it in Reader, which also looks fine on screen, but when printed, I get these glowing edges around both the tiff image & feathered images. Is there a way to change the color settings in Reader? Or am I totally missing something else? Transparency spaces??
In Acrobat, only the vector images look a little jagged on screen, but prints fine. Is there a reason for this also?
    Thank you.
    Jules

Peter, my apologies for not getting back to you sooner than this, I've been away from my Mac since I posted this.
Thank you for your very kind offer to look at the files for me. In between time a friend has been over and apparently altered some settings on my iMac and the problem seems to have been resolved. (I hope!)
Thanks again - I daresay I'll be back with more questions before long...

  • Exported PDF is Blank (branched, formerly Re: InDesign CS6 Export to PDF has missing objects)

Just recently went from CS5.5 to CS6 and now when I export files in InDesign to pdf they open and are totally blank. What am I doing wrong?

    Jeanne,
I've brancehed this to a new discussion because I'm pretty sure your problem is differnt fromthe one inthe trhead where you posted originally.
What's your OS? Are the PDFs opening automatically at the end of export, or are you opening them manually?
Are your pages blank in ID if you switch to Preview mode?

  • Font issue in exported PDF from indesign

Font issue in exported PDF from indesign:
In Indesign file we have kept a sentence in “Univers LT Std” (San serif font) with all caps style that was orginally in lower case. Refer below
When we selected the sentence in exported PDF some of the characters are not selected. Refer below.
If we enable “create tagged PDF“ in export PDF setting, then the problem is solved. Refer below.
Can you please check why this problem happened? In another project also we have faced this same problem but different font “Frutiger LT Std” with all caps style. Here also same San serif font. Please check and advise to solve this issue permanently.

Without tags a PDF is a silly amount of letters, images and lines, with tags all itams a kept in their semantic context. So work with tags as it is the only way to get correct selections and export to other file types like Word DOCX.
Without tags InDesign reads from left to right from top to bottom and the font geometry might influence the correct order of letters.
Why should anyone work without tags today? If you open a tagged PDF in Acrobat DC it is much faster than without tags.

  • Indesign transparency multiply pdf/x-1a pdf/x-4 export pdf object not visible

    Hello,
I've created a simple Indesign cs4 document under osx demonstrating the problem. I've copied from an Indesign document a rectangle with a fill color 100% cyan and a transparency effect multiply and paste the object within a new created document. I've paste the same rectangle again and switched off the transparency effect. Then I've create a new rectangle again with the same fill color and multiply transparency effect.
When I create a pdf with the standard pdf/x-4 settings the copied rectangle with the multiply transparency effect has disappeared, while the other 2 rectangles are visible. Creating a pdf with the standard pdf/x-1 settings in Indesign, then all 3 rectangles are visible.
I've created a zip file named Indesign.zip with the following 3 elements:
    - multiply.indd - indesign document
    - pdfx1.pdf - export pdf with pdf/x1 settings (3 rectangles are visible)
    - pdfx4.pdf - export pdf with pdf/x4 settings (only 2 rectangles are visible)
Opening the document with CS5 and creating pdf files, we obtain the same strange result.
You can download the zip file from the following link:
    http://www.symeta.be/symeta/static/files/Indesign.zip
How do we explain this peculiar problem?
    Regards,

    Peter, John,
If there is no solution finding corrupt objects before going to production (creating pdf files), then the problem is only detected when the job is printed! More important, if the corrupt object is located in an advertisement, then you customer wouldn't pay.
To further investigate the problem I've create 2 snippets with the following names:
    - Snippet_Good_PDFx4_Result.idms (snippet of the object who's visible after conversion to pdf/x-4)
    - Snippet_Wrong_PDFx4_Result.idms (snippet of the object who's not visible after conversion to pdf/x-4)
You can download these snippets from the following link.

When I replace the following 4 lines from the bad snippet:

    Then the result is ok!
The bad one has very strange coordinate values, such as 35298.673065771356 which is about 12452 mm! When placing the bad snippet in a new Indesign document the result is ok, just after converting to pdfx/4 the object isn't visible anymore!
Who can justify this strange behaviour?
