Exporting a 16:9 movie

I use a new HDV camcorder (Canon HV-10) that takes wide-screen 16:9 ratio.
I used the footage in FCP5 to edit a movie - the Viewer and the Canvas both display the image from the clips in the wide 16:9 format, but the clip settings indicates 720 X 480 which should not be - the display is not 4:3, it's 16:9.
The problem is in the export: I can export the finished film and get a 4:3 product (the sides of the frames are clipped off when I view it in the Quicktime Movie viewer), but I cannot get a 16:9 product.
The finished exported movie settings are 720 X 480 with a 4:3 aspect ratio - not what I want - if the source footage is shot with a camera that takes 16:9, shouldn't the exported (edited) film be 16:9 as well?
If I attempt to export the movie using an HDV 1080 preset, it winds up as 1920 X 1080 which is "incompatible" in DVD Studio Pro 4. I think what I really want is either 1280 X 720 (16:9) which is the HD 720p or HD 960 X 720 (also 16:9) or HD 1280 X 1080 (also 16:9).
I am really very confused by the sequence settings window, it has, in the general tab, three places to set: "Frame Size" - "Pixel Aspect Ratio" and "Compressor." The Compressor has me most puzzled - I can see that the frame size and pixel aspect ratio should be the same (for example, if frame size is set to HD 960 X 720, so should the aspect ratio, but the compressor doesn't offer the same choices. The three choices there for HDV are: HDVp24, HDVp25, and HDVp30 - what's the difference and is that what is needed for HD 960 X720?
I am getting the uncomfortable feeling that I will have to recapture the original footage again, since I am unable to work with what I already have (sorry, I don't remember my capture presets, and now I've monkeyed with them so much that the original presets are unknown.
Would like to have the answers to two questions:
1) what should I have set my capture and sequence presets at to capture HDV footage and be able to work with it and export a 16:9 end product that is burnable onto a DVD;
2) can I salvage what I now have? Given that my existing footage settings are at the 720 X 480 size (but display in 16:9 ratio!), can I export the final film as it lies in FCP5 to a 16:9 movie that can be "compatible" with import in DVD Studio Pro 4?
Please help.
Barry

OK Barry, a little more since I haven't seen any
action here.
Some observations:
Based on your post, you didn't shoot HDV format. You
shot DV Anamorphic NTSC, which is 720x480 that gets
stretched wider on the display device to restore the
16:9 image.
This is good, since the only likely useful format for
a DVD output for you will be exactly the same: NTSC
anamorphic.
1) what should I have set my capture and sequence
presets
at to capture HDV footage and be able to work with
it and
export a 16:9 end product that is burnable onto a
DVD;
Remember that (apparently) you didn't shoot HDV at
all.
Frame Size: 720x480
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV
CHECK THE BOX: "Anamorphic 169"
Field Dominance: Lower
Editing Timebase: 29.97 (most likely)
Compressor: DV/DVCPro NTSC
2) can I salvage what I now have? Given that my
existing
footage settings are at the 720 X 480 size (but
display in
16:9 ratio!), can I export the final film as it
lies in
FCP5 to a 16:9 movie that can be "compatible" with
import
in DVD Studio Pro 4?
Edit your sequence settings to the above, or if for
some reason that doesn't work copy everything to a
new sequence with thopse settings.
You should be fine. "The key phrases of the day are:
- DV (not HDV)
- Anamorphic
Thank you. I think I am under a mistaken concept of what HDV is. I thought, apparently incorrectly, that HDV is not 720 x 480, but either 1440 x 1080 or 1280 x 1020, and the most common HDV format is 1440 x 1080i. I think (not certain tho') that my camcorder is 1440 X 1080.
I just now (after reading your reply) re-read the camcorder manual(Canon HV10). They explain in the beginning of the manual that high-definition video (HDV) is composed of 1,080 lines.
In the section of the manual that discusses the menu options, under "REC/IN SETUP" there are three choices:
"1) HDV: High definition video at 1080 specifications with 16:9 aspect ratio.
2) DV (WIDE): Standard definition digital video with 16:9 aspect ratio.
3) DV (NORMAL): Standard definition digital video with 4:3 aspect ratio."
I am not sure if I had the camera set to record HDV and not DV (WIDE). And if I did have it set to HDV, I am not sure if I had the capture presets set to capture HDV and not DV (WIDE).
Does that information change your reply? I must say you seem to be very knowledgable. Thank you again.

  • Export settings for quicktime movie to use in DVD Studio Pro

    The workflow:
I created a movie and did extensive sound adjustments in iMovie and a few video edits, and exported it to a quicktime format:
    compression H.264
    Quality: High
    Frame reordering: yes
    Encoding mode: multi-pass
    Dimensions: 1280x720
Since then I upgraded to FCS, and tried to create a DVD with DVD SP and import the movie, and I get this error:
    Import error:
One or more files failed to import. Common reasons for this are that they do not match the current project's video standard or their file format is not supported.
I'm fairly sure I have matching video standard...and the file format has always been supported before.
I imported the quicktime (.mov) file to FCP and added some edits, recreated the chapter markers, and early on there was a pop-up that said my movie format did not match the project settings, so I checked the "okay" to adjust the video file to match.
When I finished, I exported the file from FCP to a quicktime movie with the "current settings" that have always worked with DVD Studio Pro before, and I'm getting the same error.
I don't know where the problem is.  Both the original movie I created in iMovie and the movie I recreated in FCS will import to iDVD.  I wanted the better quality production from DVDSP....
I no longer have the iMovie project file.  (I thot I was done.)  I do  have the original footage, but I'm already three days in and hoping to  avoid starting over.
I would sure appreciate any help!
    Thanks!

The specifications you listed are the problem.
I can't comment on iMovie -don't use it personally.
From FCP, you would export a self contained movie using the current Timeline settings (not H.264 ever)
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your movie fits into. This will produce a MPEG 2 video file and an AC3 audio file. Bring both into DVDSP and author.
A DVD video is always standard def 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
Converting the output from FCP to H.264 is adding an unneeded compression stage that will compromize quality -because DVD assets are always MPEG 2 / AC3. Even if DVDSP accepts that H.264 file, it gets transcoded again using DVDSP's own compression system.
All of this is covered in the DVDSP user manual. Take the time to read it. DVD authoring is complicated if you just jump in and start poking around, simple if you take the time to understand the basics.

  • Export a only a Movie Clip

I am building an interactive website as my final project for my Webmastering class and need to know one thing. First I'll give you my setup. I have four Movie Clips in four seperate layers on my main timeline. I want to export one of those Movie Clips as an avi file. When I use export>movie, it exports the main timeline. I figured it would do that. So then I opened up the Movie Clip that I want to export and tried the same thing again. No luck. Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this situation. I have five days to do this and have spent about four days of my life working on this if you add up all the hours that I have spent working on this. I really really need help. I don't want it all crashing down on me because I can't simply export a movie clip...
    Thanks in advance,
    Darth Haxor

Create a new blank document with the same parameters - size, fps, etc. - as the one the movie clip you want to export is on. Have both documents open at the same time. Select the new document by clicking on its tab, and then open the library window.
On top of the library window is a drop down list of all libraries that belong to currently open documents. Go there and select the library of the original document. From that library grab and drag the movie clip you want to export onto the stage of the new document you created. Position it where it belongs. Now you can export this new document, containing only the one movie clip you want to export.

  • Exporting to Quicktime or movie in IMovie

When I purchased my mac they told me to export the movie to Quicktime and save to the desktop. That way when I opened Idvd I could drag the movie over to Idvd. It takes an extremely long time for the export to take place. Today I tried exporting to "share to movie". I used a 84mb dv file and it took about 10 minutes using "share movie" and about 50 minutes using Quicktime. I then made dvd's of each and played them on my blu ray player hooked to a 50" LCD projection TV. Frankly, I could not tell the difference in the quality. I did the same with video I captured with my HD camcorder and again, I could not tell the difference. My question is--Is there an advantage to using "export to Quicktime" and if so, what would it be? When I purchase an HD burner would the answers to these questions change? In my opinion, using my PC with pinnacle was a much better program, but I bought a mac when I purchased the HD camcorder. Thanks

I have the exact same problem. I export the movie and it comes out lighter than the original everytime. I have used quite a few of the different options and codecs and can't crack this nut... So far my only work around is to darken the movie in imovie first and then export it to get what I want. Not a good work around needless to say.

  • Export part of a movie

How do you export part of a movie to Quicktime after setting in and out points?
    Thanks for your help

I believe this is correct. Although I haven't had the need for Compressor yet (therefore haven't bought it yet), as far as I can tell and have heard, you export the entire thing into Compressor at which point you can mark in and out points for the compression and export of your final product. It can't be done in FCPX alone, unless you duplicate your project and delete chunks of it to export only the parts you want.

  • Trying to export a full rez movie from Premeire Pro CS4

I've looked aroud the forums and it seems a lot of people are having the same issue, but I haven't seen a fix for this.
Below is a screen shot of the export settings I'm using to try and export a full rez movie (I'm not picky, H264, Qtime TIFF sequence, anything). Notice the image in the preview window. That's what it's supposed to look like, and the preview within Premiere is fine.
Below is the pixelated image I get when rendering with any combination of maxed out settings.
The content of the video is predominantly motion graphics, rendered at D1/DV widescreen settings, prorgessive.
I've tried all the Quicktime settings even with "None" selected in the Codec dropdown as well as the H264 settings you see above.
I'm on a Mac as well.
Can anyone help please? I need to know how to just get an export from Premiere CS4 with all the footage intact and not pixelated.

yeah, youre dealing with a standard ntsc video size export which is 720x480, so its handling your 720x486 source and export the only way it knows how ( sorta scaling internally etc on export )..hence crop..
looks like your original graphics images ( source files -- source graphics images ) are not matching the project size....
in other words it looks like your source graphics were "scaled" to some extent when imported to the project.  that should actually "match" for really good results... the source graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )... the reason is that in the scaling process the editor doesn't do a good job of anti aliasing and so on ( photoshop is better at scaling for example and there are other 3rd party programs that are better for up scaling ( interpolated ) than photoshop..some can be had as plug ins for psd )..
anway, the problem looks to be the scaling....cause ideally your graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )
ps...scaling DOWN is better than scaling UP...with regard the aliasing you see

  • Export Audio to QT Movie -- Expected Behavior and Other Questions

In the past I've reported that the Export Audio to QT Movie function didn't work correctly in LP 7.1.1. Well, it still doesn't seem to work correctly, but this time around I'm at least getting some kind of result. It would be kinda cool if I could get it to work according to play.
I'd like to get comments on this procedure, i.e., what kind of behavior should I expect; am I doing something wrong, etc.
    • The movie (25 minutes long) starts with a 19-second slug (no timecode burn) followed by first picture with timecode burn starting at 00:00:19:00
    • Movie Start Time = 00:00:00:00.01 (the extra bit is to work around a bug)
    • SMPTE time for bar 1 1 1 1 = 00:00:19:00
    • L & R locators set to the position & length of audio I want to export to the movie (L = bar 1 and R = bar 14)
    • Cycle = ON
    • Selected a single region of audio (track 1, outputs 1/2)
When I invoked the export function, I was presented with a dialog:
Immediately I notice that there is no 24-bit option (comments?)
    Then I encountered this message:
The file listed there is the dialog track for the movie. No problem there. Now, keeping in mind that my file is only 13 measures long (at a fairly fast tempo),
Logic then performed a very long "bounce" procedure, followed by a long "converting" procedure, followed by a "saving" procedure (in which it was writing the new QT movie file).
In the resulting movie (which BTW was the full length of the film) the audio was waaaaaaay out of sync. But aside from that, is it normal to expect that the full-length of the film will be exported? I was expecting that perhaps only the first 13-measures-worth of movie would be exported. (comments?)
So I tried again. This time I moved the song end marker to bar 14 and invoked the export function. I got all of the same dialogs as above, but the "bounce" procedure took no time at all. Neither did the "converting" procedure. I expected this, as now Logic was set to think that the song was only 14 measures long. But the "saving" procedure took as long as last time.
In the resulting movie (which was again the full length of the film), the audio was again out of sync, though not by much. Still unusable tho. Again, should I expect that only a short clip of the movie would be exported? Or, should I expect the full length movie to be saved? (comments?)
    -=iS=-
P.S. BTW, the reason my movie start time is set to 00 and not 19 seconds is because... well, that's the subject of another thread, but save to say that the above settings were the only way I could get first picture to line up with bar 1 of my song.

    Thanks for your reply George.
I normally use QT Pro to embed audio into picture also. Thought I'd try this route one more time tho.
Regarding my movie start time, I'm finding that if I set my movie start time to 19 seconds (where the burn-in first becomes visible, and which is indeed 19 seconds into the film), my SMPTE offset has to be 38 seconds. This means that Logic's t/c counter doesn't jibe with the film. So to make it so I have to enable the SMPTE view offset in the synchronization pane. But enabling it there doesn't automatically switch it on for the Giant SMPTE counter transport display.
Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I'll try the settings you suggested and see if that makes a difference.
Bouncing a chunk of movie always works perfectly here <<</div>
Can you clarify something? I know you said that you end up with a null file when you try the export thing, but in your above statement, did you mean that when you've tried this that it did in fact export a chunk of the movie, but without audio?
    Cheers!
    -=iS=-

  • Can Logic Export Audio into a Movie PORTION?

I am a film composer. I'd like to export as a quicktime movie, my cue(song mix) with the appropriate portion of the movie that it is synced up to. Preferably at a user defined resolution and compression setting (ie: so I can create little preview quicktime movies to show my directors over the net).
    Can this be done?
And if not, what application would be best to insert an audio file as a soundtrack into a Quicktime movie and get frame accurate results? Does PRO TOOLS do that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Evan EVans

    sorry mate, can't be done. what you can do is;
    1. with quicktimepro, extract the section that you want to do it with. you don't have to save the all the information, you can save it as a file referenced to the orginal film. when you do that, the file will only be about 165k as opposed to Gbs. so it's quick. you can then open that in logic and put your music onto the film and sync. (BTW depending on the codec you are using, you can still use movieplayer that came with authoring goodies back from OS 8 days, and that works in classic, though it doesn't play back very well, you can make the referenced file that works just fine in os x)
    2. import it into imovie and edit out the bit you need, but at that rate you might as well bring the cue into imovie as well. the advnatage there is that you can export the great new codecs with first class quailty and tiny file sizes.
finally, to my knowledge protools does not allow you to extract and bounce a portion of a quicktime movie. it is a quicktime thing. you have to have quicktimepro.

I keep getting this message every 2 or 3 files that I try to export a keynote presentation with audio as a movie file.
I'm trying to export movies from presentations that are around 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 min long with audio.
Sometimes Keynote '09 exports the files and sometimes it doesn't.
    No idea why.
    The exact message says:
Your slideshow cannot be exported as a quicktime movie
There is not enough disk space or there was a problem with the file. Error -1
I have 28 GB of disk available.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks, Kyn. I checked for missing audio icons, but they are all visible. Besides, I exported different batches of slides, such as 11-20 and 21 - 30 and 11-12, all with the same result. So, it is not just one slide causing the problem.
I was able to save the entire presentation as an iWork 05 document, then export it as QuickTime from Keynote 2 with success. I'd like to get it working in Keynote 3 as well.

  • Your slideshow cannot be exported as a QuickTime movie.

    Hi,
I have created an Keynote presentation and had exported it many times, over and over, since I need it to be exported. Today, I did it three times, and when I went to change the preference for exporting...
    I was using Custom > H.264 @ 60frames @ Key all frames @ Multipass.
    I wanted to change to > DV-PAL > @ 30frames @ Quality Best @ Scan progressive @ 4:3.
When I tried to export, 1/3 down the export I got the Error -50.

I have enough disk space but what can be wrong with the file?
I have unchecked exit after last slide.
I need answer fast. I cant rebuild the whole presentation.

    Hi Gary,
    Thanks for the reply.
I used the default "Full Quality, Large" settings, and the Keynote I'm working on is based on Keynotopia's iPhone-mockup/wireframe slides, so they are 640x960 in size. Here is the export screen:
This is on Mac OS X Mountain Lion with the latest version of Keynote from the App Store.
