Exporting a 4 minute clip using H.264 Quicktime Conversion but it's 2.5Gb?

I have edited a 4 minute video using source footage at 1440x1080 50i. When I export using Quicktime Conversion and H.264 compressor it's taking forever and is coming out at a whopping 2.5Gb. I am sure I have used H.264 and Quicktime Conversion before and a file of this length and size should be about 15Mb. Also I remember it taking far less time.
Anyone got any ideas? I am exporting at the same size and using Best Quality.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome to FCP forum,
Bit rate and frame size affect the file size, also best if you export sound as AAC not PCM.
If you are aiming at creating a movie for the web then yes, the final result should be well under 80MB.
Reduce frame size (customize it i.e. 480x270 etc.), keep bit rate at around 1,000kbts not 10,000, do some tests with a portion of the original movie (You could try broadband medium in the Use drop down menu). Initially FCP may show that the export is taking a long time (i.e. FCP shows an initial 7% done and seems to remain like that for rather long) but after a little while the operation is usually completed very quickly.
With regard to what is and isn't allowed on this forum take a look at the [Help & Terms of Use|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa] page.

  • Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie to Quicktime, saved on my desktop.  It started saving as INDIVIDUAL files, as in about 5400! Entire system froze, completely unresponsive.  Powered off 3 times now, it comes on and displays my screen saver but nothing

Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie into Quicktime, saved to desktop.  System started saving INDIVIDUAL frames instead and entire system froze.  Powered off and on twice - screensaver appears, but that's it - nothing else is accessible

Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual.

  • Video track/layer missing on QUICKTIME export - not missing if I use H.264 export?!

Having a strange issue with Premier Pro CS5.04.  I'm exporting a video - 2 layers of MP4 video and one TITLE layer over the top.  The top video layer is a cropped and blurred section of the same file as the clip below, to obscure some text on the video.  When I export as an H.264 mp4 file it all exports fine - all layers intact and the blurring looks fine.
However, when i change to a QUICKTIME Pro Res 720 codec, the export does not include the blurred video layer - the settings on the timeline are identical, no opacity changes etc, and if I move the clips around to different video tracks the same issue occurs.  Any idea why it would ignore the top video clip in a quicktime export?! Seems bizarre.
I'd love to include a screen grab but the uploader isn't working on this window. Useful.

I've spent the last week searching the internet, reading articles, posting on forums.  Found several people with the same issue, but no answers.
The code is fine.  I've tried code from several other articles/posts... they are all the same.  Standard <object><embed> method.
Only thing I can think of is that the QT file is NOT being properly exported with Fast Start encoded.
I was using QT Alternative, which MAY be part of the problem...  But real QT has a major bug in the installer that Apple appears to be ignoring for a long time now (...non-admin accounts get an error when trying to run QT, as the registry keys are not properly set as far as permissions).... which is preceisely why I went to QT Alternative.  I tried installing QT (real) again today, but got the same error with QT (...can't find ActiveX files... which is what appears as a result of the installer bug).
What I'm trying now is I (reluctantly) switched my account to an Admin account (...QT now actually works, rather than getting an error on startup), and I'll try exporting the QT renders again, and see if there's a difference.
But, ya, there appears to be a lot of people out there who can't get the Fast Start working lately.
I'm open to any alternatives... as long as they are not complicated, and as long as they work.  Just want embedded files on my site that Fast Start (or equivelant), and only start downloading when you click play (...otherwise, I'll have 10 clips competing to download while my HTML page still tried to finish downloading it's own content).

  • Why does Compressor take so long to export a 10 minute video clip from Final Cut Pro?

I've been trying export a 10 minute clip from Final Cut Pro. so it can be used with DVD Studio Pro and burned. However, the rendering process has taken 12 hours! The clip I'm exporting has minimal effects, no music, and is in 1080i 30fps. Does anyone know what's going on or what I can do to speed up the process?

First: How are you exporting? Are you using the Share feature or  Send to Compressor?
Second: You haven't said anything about your system configuration or really very much about your movie. What is its format… is it really 30fps or 29.97? Whatever it is, are the project settings identical to the clip properties, or were they changed?

  • Using H.264 to export to create mpeg file?

When I want to burn a FCP project to DVD SP I export it to Compressor and then choose the "DVD Best quality 120 (or 90) minutes" setting.
But, when I export for the web I use H.264 compression which gives me really good results.
Is there anyway of creating an MPEG file to be used in DVD SP which uses H.264 compression quality?
    Thanks,,

  • Export a list of clips?

Is there a way to export a list of the clips used in iMovie hd?
I am making an imovie out of 400+ pictures. I need a listing to see which ones out of iphoto I have used or not. Is there a way to export a list of these photos? I don't see a way to export a list of clips used in iMovie or photo titles iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Sheri

    Sheri,
You can use iPhoto to print a contact sheet.
So, for example if you've gathered all the photos you wish to use in your movie into an Album, just select it and choose print.
Now choose Contact sheet from the Style drop down. Sliding the Across slider to 8 and checking Save Paper will maximize the number of images per page.
You can then use the contact sheet as a kind of visual reference and check list. I've found the contact sheet to be more useful than a list since I can very quickly identify images visually.
With that many images it will take some time for you computer to churn it out.

the results i get a odd. - the video exports fine, except for the beginning titles, instead a still frame image from somewhere else in the video occupies that intro, until the first transition- in this case- dip to white, then the rest of the video is fine. the portion of the beginning  that does not show are composed of:  livetype text credits in V2 - in which i have done a manual opacity fade up and down - so the livetype text fades in, over matte color solid in V1. in the exported video -i do not see any of this, all i see is a seemingly random still from somewhere else in the video. i can however hear the audio as it is supposed be.
cant figure out why this is happening. anybody know?
    i think the livetype files are 1920 x 1080.
my FCP sequence is 720 p
this has only recently started happening and doesn't seem to be consistent.
im wondering if it has to do with the live type files, or the white solid?…
    or the conversion settings above?

Earlybird is exporting H264 ... the Key Frames setting is determining the GOP length. This value should really be determined based on the complexity of the video, to my understanding, the actual frame rate has no bearing on it. If you have very complex fast moving content then a low Key Frame rate is advisable to ensure good image quality (although it will adversely affect the filesize) whereas if you have slow moving or static content (like an interview subject) then a higher Key Frame rate will still produce a good image but at a smaler filesize. The default of 24 should be pretty much fine as a catchall starting point.

Corrupted render files (and render references) can be a pain because FCP will use those files and references  in place of the original media when building the export. And so it should as it does't want to waste time re-rendering sections that are apparently already rendered. Unfortuantely, as noted, if the render file has gone bad and/or starts referencing the wrong media then you'll get these wierd flashes of completely unexpeced and unwanted footage showing up where it shouldn't be. When you trash those files then QT / FCP will just go back and re-reference the original media ... so it's usually a worthwhile step to take just in case thats the problem.  The worse case scenario is that it only that doesn't work and you spend some time unecessarily re-rendering.
As to why these files go bad? That I don't know. Why do Preferences get corrupted? That I don't know either but it definitely happens :-(

  • Fcp quicktime conversion export colour problem

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, i have noticed that whenever i want to export a file using Quicktime Conversion from Final Cut Pro 6, the output file has lost its colour depth and seems flat.
For example, i have a DV-PAL timeline and want to export a mov file using QT Conversion and the DV-PAL setting, the file's colour is different to fcp.
What could cause such a problem? i never encountered such a problem running on an older system.
    Please help!

i have tried checking and unchecking 'Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility', and i do not see a change. i have even tried opening the file using the old Quicktime player, but both the new Quicktime x player and the old one look identical.
    i appreciate your help!

Good to hear that you've had some success with the import.
I tried 3 times to do it before I finally changed it to H.264, and it worked on the first try.  The quality of the compression was terrible with those settings compared to my standard settings, but I'm just glad it worked.
Rather than Share>Export using QuickTime and then choosing your own settings for H.264, you may get a better result if you simply use the Share>Export Movie option. Alternatively, use the Share>Media Browser option (as I mentioned in my earlier post). You will be presented with a range of sizes to choose from. Depending on your target, it's usually best to select the highest size available, such as Large, HD 720p or HD 1080p. However, for producing a DVD it's best to not go beyond the HD 720p size, as the DVD will be downscaled during encoding to Standard Definition in the appropriate size for either PAL or NTSC.
In my experience, both these options (Export Movie or Media Browser) produce a video file of excellent quality. The files will be in H.264 format and will have the file extension .mov or .m4v depending on the size of the export. I'm assuming that your camera records HD video in AVCHD format.
These files work well with iDVD (or other DVD authoring programs). The export process for the presets is optimised by Apple to produce high quality video files at a reasonable file size. So, selecting a preset may give you a much better result. Choosing your own H.264 settings when using the "Export using QuickTime" method could be why "the compression was terrible". You may have selected a data (bit) rate that was too low. There is always a trade-off between quality and file size when compressing video.
So, to summarise, try one of the Apple presets using either Share>Export Movie or Share>Media Browser.

  • Exporting using H.264. File is huge. Help.

I am trying to export a quicktime file using H.264. For some reason when I export the file is absolutely massive.  It results in a 6.5 GB file. It should be significantly smaller.  Perhaps someone can help me with my settings?

What is your frame size and what are you exporting for? YouTube, Vimeo, your own web site, Blu-Ray?
A six minute 1080p YouTube video using H.264 to get a mp4 file should come out to around 356MB.
I just exported one to see how big it was, and it came out very close to the estimate. If we knew what the purpose of the video was, we could make better recommendations. But if it happens to be for YouTube as so many are these days, just choose the preset as shown below for HD. Or choose the frame size that is appropriate for the frame size of your sequence.

  • Automatically create and export 10 minute clips

I have to import 40 VHS tapes of over 2 hours each, I would like to create a workflow to create 10 minute clips and then send them to compressor, is there a way to do this automattically? -Thanks

I am archiving these family videos for someone and I want to keep the clips around 2gb for possible editing later by them with whatever software they may buy, so I want to send them to compressor to batch create three different formats 1) uncompressed 2) for Apple devices and 3) to create DVD's. I was just wondering if there was a way to take a 2 or 3 hour movie and quickly chop it up into 10 minute segments and then batch export.
Yes, there are such utilities, but not, AFAIK, from inside FCP X. I am not all too familiar with working in Compressor, but I don't think that it can chop your video in 10 minute segments either.
I would export to Quicktime, and use some utility to slice the video in segments, like QTCoffee.
In QTCoffee there is an utility called splitmovie that does just that.
Open a Terminal window, cd to the folder where your movie resides; and then type
       splitmovie -self-contained -duration 600 MyMovie.mov -o Part
This will create movies called Part-1, Part-2, etc, with 10 minutes each (with the likely exception of the last one, which will last the remaining time, e.g a 35 minute movie will yield three 10-min and one 5-minute part).
QTCoffee is free. Google it, download it, use it.

  • How do i change the size of a clip using batch export?

hi, when i try and do a batch export to change my clips from a DV PAL to PhotoJpeg 320*240 sized clips the "options" button is greyed out. so all i have as export settings are the QT presets in a pulldown list. is there any way i can create my own setting? (and the also save that?)
    thx

    what i'm seeing is that
    a) selecting all files in Media Man. gives me the option to size and set codecs but not the audio off.
    b) selecting all files in Batch Export allows me to pick a format (QT, aiff etc) choose a preset (photoJpeg included) select whether to include audio and video or both but not set the size or customize the QT settings
    c) selecting all clips then "file>export>using QT conversion" gives me all options, but seem to grab only the first clip.

  • Made a 2 minute edit on Final Cut Express but at the 30 seconds (after I exported), there's a clip showing up that is not in my project, a clip i don't want in there, a glitch, how can I correct this problem? I don't want to start over again :(

    Basically, I have 2 problems:
    1) When I export it shows this clip that's not in my normal project and it ruins my project by having this clip in there; it's like a glitch. I tried to change the clip, and and still doesn't make the project normal again. Tried a new sequence and dragging the project into HD Mode and to no avail.
    My camera:
    HD: 1080p
    Settings: At Hd
    2)
Also, it's only displaying black bars above my project, even after exporting at 720p. I just don't want this random clip in my project or the black bars. I'm using Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any possible idea what this could be? Any help woud be much appreciated! I'm clueless on this.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?  : )

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.
