Exporting a DVD with better resolution?

Hi there!
I'm trying to export a project to DVD in FCP X but when I try to perform the export Final Cut drops the export resolution to 720x526 automatically, I've no idea how to change it. The actually project I've been working with is 1080p HD. But it's very short, so it's not a question of the file being too large for the DVD. Is there anyway I can change it or stop it from doing this. I'd like to retain as much quality as possible.
Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks!

Just to add to what Tom said…
Since you have a short movie to compress you could also consider an AVCHD disk, which is between the quality of SD and Blu Ray. (These are HD frame size and are an option for movies  less than about 35 minutes in length,) You can select the Blu Ray Share option and use your DVD burner to create the disk – using regular DVD blank media. You'd also need a Blu-Ray capable player to view it.

  • Export for DVD with Animation codec without alphas channels not working?

I'm using FCP 5 with DVDSP. My FCP projects consist of quicktime movies that are using the Animation compressor (for lossless quality), and the movies contain alpha channels (thus they were rendered at Millions + colors to preserve the alphas).
This is my problem. I want to now export a quicktime movie to use in DVDSP with animation compression, so it is again lossless quality (obviously to presever the quality through these steps). But I do NOT want to preserve the alpha channels, because what I've learned is that when made into a DVD, the alphas are not preserved and the image looks wrong (as if without the alphas).
So I basically want to "flatten" the video, if there was some way.
I would assume the solution would be to, in FCP, export a quicktime at animation compression, but set to Millions for colors, and not Millions + (I was taught that the Millions + will preserve the alpha info).
Well, what's happening is when I set it to that, it renders, but then I get info on the movie in Quicktime and it says it has Millions + still. And thus, it looks wrong in DVDSP.
What is going on? Is this a bug in FCP?
Does anyone have an idea as to how to get around this. The only thing that has worked for me is to export the Quicktime movie with "none" for compression, but that's making the movie SO large that I can't work with it and it doesn't play right when I make the DVD.
I really appreciate anyones help on the matter. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not yet tried laying a solid black video track underneath to see what it does, but it seems like a good idea and I'll try it out to see what happens when I get back home.
I'll try to explain what I mean by the image looking wrong.
I'm picking up where another left off, so I'm not sure of how he cut the quicktime movie together; all I know is that they used alpha channels in Photoshop and After Effects to make the image looks the way they want it. This is a drawn character laid on a white background with a black frame around the entire image. It looks the way he wants it to in the quicktime movie, and this quicktime movie is 720x480, animation millions colors +, 24fps.
This movie, along with others of the like, need to be cut together in FCP and then put on a DVD with DVDSP. When I export it and it looks "wrong", what's happening is there is a black block behind the drawn character. The guy that made the movies in AE says that, that is what it looks like when the alpha channel is not working correctly.
To test things, I've changed the quicktime compression settings in the sequence settings. If I set it to anything that is not animation, I get that black block in the viewer. (Note though, that if I set it to animation, millions + or not +, it shows the alpha correctly both ways).
In FCP's user manual it says that if you're passing your movie on to a DVD, to use a high or lossless compression to keep the quality up, like animation or PhotoJPEG. For this reason, I haven't wanted to go to DV - especially with this type of image (graphic drawn shapes), it's easy to see a quality difference.
It really seems like there is a lot of voodoo involved with compression settings. As for now the best "fool-proof" solution I've found is to re-render the movie in After Effects at millions (not+) so that it won't contain the alpha channel info, and FCP seems to like that a lot more.
I just wish I could get FCP to work with the movies as they were because I'm having to re-edit everything to work with these new movies now.
Thanks again for the tips and insight.

  • Export to DVD with Best Quality

I am wondering what is the best way to export a movie for burning to a DVD. I have two movies, each about 20 minutes long. Mostly consists of pictures set to music, with some video clips mixed in. Each movie will be burned to their own DVD (single layer). Will be showing the movies on an HDTV via DVD (Standard DVD Player with upconvert connected via HDMI).
I'm wrestling with the options of exporting as an MP4 file from Imovie, and then to a DVD, but I understand that is limited to 720 and I'm concerned about quality loss due to compression.
    OR
Export to Quicktime and then converting that to something which will go on a DVD (my understanding is that IDVD won't add a .mov file directly to a DVD).
I don't want to buy any other software if I can avoid it, so if there are freeware options outside of this that are simple to use, I'm open to other suggestions.

The best possible comes from exporting your movie as QT movie (NOT conversion) same settings, self contained (leave recompress all frames unchecked).
That will be your master and is ready to be used in Compressor for your mpeg2 and ac3 to send to DVDstudio.

  • Trouble exporting a pdf with correct resolution

    I am really confused.
When I export a pdf from inDesign using any of the (print) options, and view it in bridge (meta data and preview area), the dimensions are incorrect from what the specs my printer supplied me, even though the inches are correct in the document set up.
As an example, a postcard in Inches, 4.1” x 6.1” and when looking at the meta data using bridge it says the 439 x 289 (pixels I guess) and should be 2135 x 1435. It also doesn't display the resolution in bridge for the pdf which needs to be 350 dpi. Now if I export a jpeg, it has all the correct specs that I need. Am I exporting incorrectly?

    Ok right got it
My document is A4 - and Bridge is telling me the PDF is 595 x 842
If you start a new document and choose "Web" instead of "Print"
    Choose A4 and you'll see the dimensions being 595 x 842
I wouldn't trust Bridge or any PDF preview or information for actual size.
It's clearly giving a Pixel reading of the document
And if you uploaded that as a thumbnail to a website at 72 ppi
    It would be 595 x 842 pixels.

  • Export PDF's with better quality, to be opened on PC

I like Pages, really, even if some functions are not intuitive.
But after months of using it and sending important PDFs i realized Pages PDF's look great on OSX Pages and Preview, but are useless if read in Acrobat (Mac) or with any reader on a PC. And I'm not talking images here, I'm talking distorted fonts. That looks very unprofessional when I have to deliver a paper.
I can't even show you on a screen cap because weirdly, when I take a screen cap with boft apps open at the same time the captured image show that both texts are distorted.
Exporting to word format gives another problem: it ***** up the whole structure and fonts, once again, if opened on a PC.
Why is all that and how to fix that? Unacceptable that PDF export can't be of decent quality...
Macbook Pro Retina 2014, everything updated etc, and i only use Time New Roman in Pages.
    In advance, thanks.

Sorry I thought you were a native English speaker. Swedish/Danish/Norwegian?
Hard to determine anything from photographs of the screen with all the interference patterns.
You take a screensnap by holding down command shift 4 and dragging over the area you want. The screensnap is saved to the Desktop as a .png file.
On a PC you hit the Print Screen key on the keyboard.
    I'll translate the "chinese"
You need to test the problem:
    1. Create files with both text and images.
    2. Label the files clearly as to what they are e.g. "Times Roman Images 300dpi Pages 5.5.2" etc
    3. Also put that label in the document itself so you know what you are looking at and exactly what settings you used.
    4. You appear to have used Times Roman. I suspect, but can't be sure, that what is happening is the Mac version is sharp and clear, but it is not being embedded or used by the PC which is substituting the Windows version.
    5. Acrobat has a different and in my opinion inferior method of anti-aliasing fonts. Anti-aliasing is a method of smoothing fonts on screen by adding grey pixels in the curves and angles.
Sorry I can't do more but you have the files and I presume the recipients with the problems.

  • Replace photos with higher resolution versions?

A professional photographer sent me a DVD with about 1,000 photos on it from an event I hosted.  I imported them all into iPhoto and made a couple of photo books out of them (but didn't yet get them printed).  I noticed the resolution wasn't what I expected, so the photographer sent me a new DVD with higher resolution versions.  Same filenames.  Is there any way to import the new versions into iPhoto, replacing the old ones?  Ideally they would appear in the photo books, too!  I'd hate to have to spend hours recreating what I did.
    Thanks!

I don't think so, iPhoto is designed to prevent "collisions" between similar file names, so you can't just import them. You would have to do major surgery to the iPhoto Library, which is not a good idea. And still might not work.
I think you should just re-import and start over.

  • Save file with high resolution progamatically

    Hello,
I'm trying to export the document to JPEG and PNG formats with a resolution of 300 DPI. I'm using the following code:

The file gets saved in the desired format but the resolution is always 72 DPI. Is there something i'm missing while exporting the file with higher resolution?
    Please help..
    Thanks

Why are you adding a resolution value to the save command?
It doesn't take or understand a resolution value.
You need to set the resolution on the document first, then save.

  • Export to epub with linked ai files result in low quality images

I have a 220 page indesign cc doc which I am exporting to epub fixed layout. I have around 100 linked ai files. When I export, the main paragraph text is crisp and lovely but the ai figures are a little fuzzy.
I have tested different settings in the 'Object Export Options' but each time it comes out the same.
    See image below.
I have searched around but can't seem to find anyone talking about this. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

    Hello Carli,
When exporting to epub, images format changes to png/jpg/gif depending on what you have selected in EPUB Export Options dialog. Please try exporting to PNG with high resolution selected(you can change Resolution as well in Export Options dialog).
    Thanks

  • Resolution problems exporting to DVD

I am brand new to FCP 5 and everything I have learned has been within the past two weeks. I have read MANY posts on resolution settings, square pixels vs. retangular pixels, iDVD problems, exporting problems, etc. However I have not found an answer to my problem, but many helped.
I am currently trying to project video from a DVD. The projection needs to be an EXACT size. After exporting and viewing with projection in QT Fullscreen, the video is exactly what I want.
However, when I burn a DVD using iDVD and project it from a DVD player, the projection is slightly stretched horizontally. Why is that?
The sequence is originally from HD and the export settings are -
    -Frame Size: 640x480 (4:3)
    -Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1440x1080
-Exported using QT Conversion NO COMPRESSION
(There are many other combinations of frame size and pixel aspect ratio's that also work initially, but they project with the same problem.)
I had to have missed something.
    ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Eric
    Power MAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The footage did come from an HDV from Sony.
I use QT Conversion because if I export it as an QT Movie, the video is distorted. However, when exported through Quicktime conversion/quicktime movie/no compression, the movie is exported in the correct dimensions, though the DVD play back issue still persists.
I am running off of iDVD v 5.0.1 and could not find a place where I could choose a 16:9 option, if that is what you meant.
The sequence does include a PSD mask which was imported as a Layered Graphic Sequence. That shouldn't have any impact on the burning issue though.

    Hi, I use a MacBookPro with Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Intel Core i5 2,4 GH - RAM 4 GB.

My problem is that when I burn the dvd with the final work in PAL system, the menu of the DVD has the text very blurred at a very bad resolution.
I searched this forum and I didn't found a similar problem for Mac user.
I had the same problem with PRE 9.
Same problem if I insert a logo in the corner of the video. Very bad resolution image in the final dvd.
I tried to change the beginning resolution of the image from very low to very high and the result was the same.
Someone has similar problems? Someone did find a way to solve it?

Dear Bill, many thanks for your answer.
This is the Project Preset chosen.
As the source is a JVC Everio with hard disk, I chose PAL - Hard Disk - Widescreen 48 KHz
The source is as I said a JVC Everio in SD size. I saved the files in a backup Hard Disk. They are .mod files.
I don't know how to see if a Menu Sets is HD or SD. I tried almost all the available Menu Sets always with the same blurry results.
These images explain better than words.
Note that the firt image in the DVD Menu is perfect, not blurry. And this add a little bit of mystery :-)
this is the scene selection that has text blurry
And this is the logo I put in the right bottom side of the video. It is blurry. I put a high resolution image and it was blurry. Then I tried with an image .png with the same width of the video (720 pixels) and this is the same blurry effect:
The solution I use in these days to have goog results is very time expensive.
I make the editing work in my mac, without logo and menu. I make a dvd. Then I import the VIDEO_TS folder in my old pc, with my old version of Adobe Premiere 7.0. I insert the logo, I make the menu and then I make a dvd with my old PC and the resolution is the one I want.
Obviolusly I'd like to do all the work in my Mac...
The same problems and solution I used also with PRE 9.0
By the way, I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements in my Mac instead  iMovie because I need to do videos longer than 2 hours. And iMovie has this limit.
Many thanks in advance for help. There is someone that is using Mac and PRE 10 with GOOD results?

  • Exporting problem: How can I make a PAL DVD with NTSC footage?

    Hi everyone,
I need some help as I've been trying to burn a DVD for a couple of days now but it still isn't working. Here is my situation:
I shot a lot of standard definition DV with my Canon GL-2 (NTSC, bought in America) that I imported into the trial version of Premiere 5.5.
I edited the footage and set out to make a DVD with the footage that will play on PAL televisions as I live in Australia now and it's all PAL over here.
I exported the footage and put it onto Windows DVD Maker because the trial version of Premiere doesn't let you use Encore.
The footage looked great on Premiere and on the little preview that you get through Windows DVD Maker, but when I burnt the DVD and tried playing it on my TV it looked really bad.
The big problem was the color. Everything was much too red, particularly people's faces.
I assume the problem lies in my export settings, and I was hoping someome who has done this before could help me out. I tried a variety of settings, but they all looked bad and I'd prefer not to waste any more money on DVDs that look like hell.
Is there anyone out there who can tell me how I can get the DVD to look like it does on my computer? What setting would I need to apply? I have been all over the internet, looking at a lot of tutorials and forums, but havent found an answer yet.
    Thanks a bunch!
    Shawn
PS- My academic credentials have now been verified by Adobe, so if you know a way to do this using Encore, please let me know because in a few hours I will have access to that as well. Cheers!

Hey shooternz, thanks for the fast reply.
My DVD player is playing the DVDs so that's OK, the real problem is that they look so bad. I just bought a whole mess of DVDs because I thought I would just experiment while I was waiting to see if anyone could help me out, and the results have been frustrating. I tried it with all PAL settings and the first DVD I made was much better. That one didnt have all of the sections, just one of the chapters (I wanted to check quickly whether the setting I had was a good one, so I just put a short 7 minute clip on). Encouraged, I tried burning the whole disc using the same settings, but it came out crappy again. Much too red. This is really frustrating me. My computer is new, so I can't see why there would be any problem with the DVD burner, but if two DVDs with the same export settings are coming out differently, I'm thinking it might have to be a problem with either the DVD burner or the DVDs?
Can anybody suggest anything? I'm dying here.

  • What is the best frame rate to shoot/edit with for export to DVD?

Hello, I am going to shoot some instructional martial arts videos that need to be exported to DVD. I haven't exported to DVD since 2005. I am curious what the best frame rate is to shoot with and edit in Premiere to export to DVD. I've read conflicting information online. Some forums say that you can edit in whatever frame rate you want as long as the output is SD, 30i, which seems outdated to me.
I'm shooting on the GH2, so my options are 1080 24p (which has terrible strobiness compared to other cameras at 24p), 1080 60i, 720 60p, and apparently there is an HBR firmware update that allows 1080 30p. I want the motion to be as unstroby as possible, without being too soft. My friend's camera can shoot 1080 60p and I'm considering buying the G6, which also shoots 1080 60p. But I've read online that 60p to DVD looks choppy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
    Jeremy

Thank you Jim. I do have one more question with regards to your advice:
I am putting the new firmware on my GH2 today, so I will be able to capture 1080/30p as opposed to only 1080/60i to edit in the 30p timeline. Is there a reason you would prefer 60i over true 30p at the same res? I've had problems with interlacing in the past never quite going away and getting funky when doing slow motion and other effects.

  • How can I increase resolution when burning a dvd with elements 11 premiere

How can I increase resolution when burning a dvd with elements 11 premiere
I am trying to generate a slide show DVD....the pictures on the TV are poor quality

    Welcome to the forum.
As Steve points out, a DVD-Video is set in resolution, to 720 x 480 (for NTSC), in either Standard 4:3, or Widescreen 16:9. That is as good as it can get, and is not a limitation of PrE, but of the DVD-Video specs, which were written a long time ago.
The best that one can get is to play that DVD-Video on an up-rezzing DVD player, or most BD players, that also have up-rezzing, to an HD TV monitor. Those players have dedicated chips, JUST for up-rezzing.
Then, and per Peru Bob's questions, I attain the ultimate Still Images to DVD-Video, by doing my Scaling in Photoshop, and using either the Bicubic Sharper, or Bicubic Smoother Scaling algorithms. I Scale my Camera RAW Images to match my Project's Frame Size, and Crop, where necessary to match the Aspect Ratio of my Images, to the Aspect Ratio of the Project, i.e. if going to a 16:9 Widescreen, I will lose some pixels top and bottom, but I account for that, per my asesthetic.
Note: some PrE users insist that the Scaling in PrE is as good as Photoshop's, but my critical eyes point to using PS. Also, I do NOT use JPEG, which is a lossy, compressed format, and will Save_As PSD from Photoshop, for ultimate quality.
Good luck, and please let us know the pixel x pixel dimensions of your Images.
