Exporting a PDF X:3 from indesign for Blurb

Ok, I can't seem to get around this problem at all and I'm really getting frustrated. I have an indesign file that I want to export to a PDF X:3 file for blurb. From indesign I click on file>adobe pdf presents> blurb template. Then it asks me to name it, I do, then I click 'save' and the next box comes up with the 'export' button at the bottom. When I click 'export' the box goes away but then nothing at all happens- no status/ progress bar, no other messages, nothing. Then when I click on the PDF file on the desktop (or wherever I saved it) nothing opens, and the file size is listed as 0 bytes, so clearly it is not exporting.
Can someone please tell me what step I am missing to correctly export a PDF X:3 file? Like I said, I'm completely at a loss on this one. Thanks!

It's helpful to check the box to open the PDF when export is complete so you know it's finished. The progress bar, as Manish mentioned, is in the Background tasks panel on CS5 and later, but there is also a little scrolling horizontal lines icon that appears in the menu bar when a background task is working.

  • How can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac?

how can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac? i have a client that specificly needs the files to be avi and in 24bit what are the settings that i need to use to export the video using photoshop on a mac?

    Hello,
To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

  • PDFs from InDesign for print then web?

The workflow is supposed to be: we simply take the PDF files which were created from InDesign and then sent to our printer, and give them to our web service company who has our online edition finished by morning. But we're upgrading our photo processing for the print edition, which results in overly bright photos for printing on newsprint. With a 48 page tiny-town newspaper, it would be a major problem to replace all of the photos in the layout with specially processed ones for web. But we need to have PDFs for our web service company that contain, richer, higher contrast photos for web.
Is there some trick other than manually processing new photos for every page and manually re-linking each one on every page? Maybe CS4 has some feature that makes this easy, i.e., automated web version of an InDesign layout, i.e., links to an alternate folder of photos just for a web version?
    CS2 / Mac OS 10.4.11 / various Mac hardware

RGB-workflow is just a way to do things... You can do it in at least CS2, CS3 and CS4 softwares, propably with earlier versions too. It basically means that you adjust your images in some wide RGB gamut, like AdobeRGB, then save them without making CMYK conversion and place them to indesign layout as RGB images. When you export your PDF, you make that RGB-CMYK conversion to all images at once.
Normally people can use same adjustments for both web- and print images. When image is adjusted well, icc-profile that will be used for RGB-CMYK converion will take care of fine tuning like compensating midtones and Total Ink Limits...
In InDesign CS4 you can use Photoshop PSD images with adjustment layers. If you really have to make some adjustment that would be nice to get rid off in indesign, you may toggle visibility of those adjustment layers in InDesigns Object Layer Options tool.
I still suggest that you try to fix your workflow so that you don´t have to make any extra adjustments to images for printing after you have once placed them to indesign layout. It should be possible, millions of publishers do that every day...

  • Exporting graphic from InDesign for Web

    Hi Everyone,
My goal is to create some large buttons for the web. I probably should have done this in another program, but since I'm a beginner to Adobe and still learning, I drew them in InDesign, the program I'm most educated on. I created an embossed box with rounded corners and added on some product photos and text.
I copied and pasted the boxes onto a transparent background in Photoshop, the exported them for Web as PNGs. They came out very pixelated. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for any help!

Copying just takes a scrap of the actual data from InDesign to Photoshop in your workflow. Hence you're getting pixelated output. The best way is to work in Photoshop use Pen tool to make curve corners and then place Photos and add text layers.

  • Is it possible to create a PDF "print" button from InDesign behaviors?

In Acrobat, there is a way to create a button with a behavior for "print" that will queue the document up for printing. I don't see a way to do this on the InDesign end, though, via behaviors. Something that will export from InDesign and carry over to the PDF. As this is something I'd like to use on every page, adding it to a template would be much easier than manually adding these to each page in Acrobat post-export.
Any guidance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

In Acrobat, Print is a button option, however, it only opens the Print dialog box, so the user can set choices and then print.
Perhaps you'd want to submit an official feature request for a future version of ID at:

  • Finding ligature text in PDF when produced from InDesign CS4

When searching the PDF, some words are not found. If I search the word "final", I find 19 occurences of the word "finally", but none whatsoever of "final". The word "final" is only found if I search for "fi nal" with a space between the "i" and "n". I previously suspected a ligature problem. Please provide me a solution and it will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sathishkumar K

I'll repeat what we (Adobe) have advised users about since release 1.0 of InDesign.
The print function of InDesign is exactly what it claims to be. In the case of printing to PostScript printers, InDesign and the underlying Adobe graphics subsystems generate PostScript that is optimized for direct and efficient printing without any consideration whatsoever for any other purpose such as creation of PDF via distillation of PostScript.
The PDF export function generates PDF directly without any intermediate PostScript. This allows PDF to be created that retains live transparency, color management, layers, and accessibility if desired or specified. Such PDF is also generated in a manner such that it may be properly searched in Reader or Acrobat via inclusion of information that compensates for common ligatures and the actual encoding of the text and fonts in the PDF file; this is not possible with PDF generated by distillation of PostScript produced from InDesign because simply stated, such capabilities are not possible with PostScript! By the way, the inclusion of such information and support for PDF functionality one normally expects to find in Reader or Acrobat (including searchability, object metadata, etc.) is one of the major reasons why PDF files created by PDF export (and save as PDF in Illustrator) are larger than those brain-dead PDF files created by distillation of PostScript.

  • Export cross-references and hyperlinks from InDesign to Word?

    Hi,
I am wondering if it is possible to export text from InDesign (CS5) to Word (2010) keeping all cross-references active?
This would be really nice if so as we do a lot of translations for literature and need to keep moving back and forth with editors using Word.
If anyone has any information on this, please let me know!
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for the suggestion, but our company is world-wide and each subsidiary deals with different staff and editors (who only some use Adobe software, but all use Office). I will pass along the info though.
This would be a good Feature Request for a future release of InDesign!
    Thanks again.

  • Problem exporting file containing dotted strokes (from InDesign CS3)

I'm producing a booklet in CS3 where I've used a lot of dotted strokes (both as decorative lines, and as outlines to background panels beneath text). When I export to pdf, I'm finding that all the spreads that contain these elements come up blank with error messages. If I change the stroke type to solid, there is no problem. Is this a bug with the dotted stroke feature, or anything else? Any fixes or suggestions would be great to hear.

  • Exporting text from InDesign for web use

I am creating graphics in InDesign CS3 on a Mac running OSX. The graphics consist of a box containing explanatory. I do not have the option of doing the text part in another program - the "boss" wants the layout done in InDesign so I would have to do this twice if I use Illustrator or Photoshop (and I'm not sure how to put a lot of text in a box into Photoshop).
When I exported as a jpg using different resolution settings, put the graphic into Dreamweaver, and then put it onto the web, the text was fuzzy. I can't use the Cross Media Export because this needs to go onto the web as a graphic rather than as text. I can't export to a pdf because the person designing the website is insistent that this be a picture.
I'm not sure all the information needed to answer this is included - please let me know if more information is needed. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Jeffrey,
Thank you for your answer. I'm not quite sure what you mean by rasterize in Photoshop. I tried what I thought you meant and the screen and print quality both were worse than simply exporting the InDesign document as a jpg (and that quality is not good enough).
    Here is what I did:
I exported the InDesign document as a pdf using  Press Quality Print and all of the other settings as defaults. When I opened the pdf in Photoshop, anti-aliasing was checked. I used 300 dpi, RGB, and 8 bit - the defaults. I went into Save as for Web, jpg, and used all of the default settings except that I made the document smaller as it was way too large for the web. I did the same thing for gif - opened the pdf in Photoshop, anti-aliased was checked by default, went into Save as for Web, and kept all of the same settings except to decrease the size of the image.
I'm sure there is something I'm just not understanding, and I hope with this explanation you will be able to have an "ah-ha" moment and point me in the right direction.
    Thanks,
    Marcy

  • Exporting SWF from InDesign for presentation

I've exported a swf file for a presentation that uses .flv files. When I open the file in flash it works fine unless I put it in full screen mode. Doing this makes the videos huge/zoomed in. I need to get this done for Monday and I can't work out what I've done wrong. Only a few of the slides have a video on. The others with just a static image work perfectly fine.
Thanks for you help in advance

That´s unfortunate indesign "feature" which is quite hard to work-around.
Check this FAQ, Bugs&Fixes section / FullScreen view does not work properly if videos have been used:
    http://www.edocker.fi/index.php/en/support/frequently-asked-questions/
It´s made for eDocker users but I think you may use it also without eDocker, with SWF files exported from InDesign

  • Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks in advance

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

  • How to output from InDesign for best photocopy results?

    Hi,
I need to output a color newsletter created in InDesign to be printed in grayscale for b&w photocopying. Because the newsletter has a few photos and other grayscale images, the InDesign file needs to be printed to my printer at a lower lpi for the best results to be photocopied.
The original is in color because the newsletter is primarily shared digitally. However, the client has a need to print copies on their photocopier for other distribution needs.
How can a file be EXPORTED or SAVED or PRINTED in a way that I can play with the lpi output in order to find the best results with their copier?
    Thanks.

Does this need to be copied "off the glass" on this copier, or does it have a printer interface? Copying halftones is always a problem, and you don't normally get to set the screen frequency for a desktop printer (some postscript printers might allow it) -- in general they only have the abilitly, due to low resolution limitations, to output a very small number of actual frequencies and the odds that you'll find a screen that doesn't create an interference pattern onthe copier are pretty small. IF there is any way to adjust the lpi value, it will be in the printer driver.
If the client's copier has a printer interface, that's the way to go. Make a grayscale PDF (or if it's a monochrome machine, just send it the color PDF and see how it prints) and print, rather than copy, so you aren't re-screening the images.

  • Stability of pdf bookmark structure from InDesign

I have been struggling in InDesign and Acrobat with a fairly complex pdf. I use CS2 Suite. I have built 6 books in ID each with TOC and bookmarks. I have created a TOC nav document to go to any book. Individually the pdf works fine in Acrobat. Clicking on the TOC item goes to the start of that section as desired. I put an ID button on each cover page of the 6 books that returns to the 8 page TOC cover.
As soon as I put the TOC button on each books cover, the TOC in the book stopped working and goes to the book cover. When I use the Acrobat link tool, the destination has become "p0". I manually enter the destination page within the doc, but this is fragile.
My goal is to burn the six book pdfs and the TOC pdf to CD for distribution. What makes this TOC to PDF data so fragile? How do I need to build and save my ID docs stronger? I can do this, but I just don't see where this "p0" is coming from. I am posting to Acrobat forum as well. Thanks

I have been rebuilding this set of ID files to PDFs as I stated. In the process I have clarified for myself how to get a good TOC by not expecting text generated by ID, in this case, the section marker instead of the desired TOC styled text. So I am getting clean TOC and pdf bookmarks now.
But the next step in this project has been to build a good NAV document in ID so that when I burn them all to a CD for distribution the user can navigate using buttons. In my case buttons added to the cover page of each PDF that take the user back to the CD NAV file. The NAV file has links that take the user to an individual book.
I'm finding a lot of instability in this process of coaxing the various NAV buttons to both work and not do stuff like dropping nested styles from the a book file's individual style sheet, reversing the order of styles in the TOC style option, or like you responded to here, changing the bookmarks from the TOC to this "p0" after putting on the front NAV button.
I have gotten all the pdfs for both the books and NAV document finalized and burned to a CD, where they seem to work. I am now trying to figure out what is causing all these ID reconfigurations of my styles and TOC bookmark destinations.
