Exporting anamorphic quicktime

Hi,
I am editing in FCP 4.5. The video was shot wide-screen 16:9. I captured correctly (I assume). My sequence settings are NTCS-CCIR 601/DV, 720x480. Anamorphic box is checked. Everything looks good - correct proportions.
But how do I export to QuickTime properly? I tried it with the Anamorphic box checked and un-checked. Both times the resulting QT was squeezed into a box. People were distorted (stretched) and the wide screen was lost. Please advise. I read the HELP section, but perhaps didn't understand it.
thanks,
Eve

I have temp music in the video now. i'm making the DVD so the client has a copy to look at (they asked for it, so why not), while the composer is working. BTW: the QT i make i really a "self-contained FCP movie") if that helps in your advice.
PS - I have the same problem when exporting a freeze frame (still frame) from FCP to use for whatever purposes...the widescreen gets squished. Tips?
I fully admit that even after reading the posts and info about 16:9, i don't understand it really, so i'd settle for just knowing the proper settings to export...i'll probably have the same problem when i print to tape (mini DV) at the END END of the project. So i'd better get on top of it now.
Many thanks for helping me with this issue. i feel a bit dense about this.
best,
Eve

  • Exporting an anamorphic quicktime

I'm trying to export a quicktime from an anamorphic sequence from FCP 4.5 using quicktime movie (not self contained), In DVD studio pro It comes out with bars either side after telling it it's anamorphic footage and in iDVD it comes out 4:3
    Thanks in advance

In DVD studio pro It comes out with bars either side after telling it it's anamorphic footage and in iDVD it comes out 4:3
Can you speak on how you're testing this? That is, are you using the DVDSP's Simulator? Or are these burned discs that are acting this way?
If these are burned discs, what are the settings of your DVD player and TV? By that I mean, if your DVD Player set to 16:9 Pan & Scan or 16:9 Letterbox mode?
Also, what did you set your display mode in DVDSP to be? 16:9 Letterbox?

  • Any way to export anamorphic SD QT that will play back 16:9?

I haven't posted for a while because FCS2 has been working great. However one thing has been nagging me for quite a while and I wonder if it's a gap in my FCP education. When I work in SD 16:9 projects (either DV NTSC or DV50 Easy Setup), I often export to QuickTime Movie as "self-contained" .mov's before dealing with clients about output formats. However, because these are now 16:9 anamorphic clips, I can never get QuickTime Player to play them back at the Desktop level in the right aspect ratio.
Is there any way to flag the QT so that the QT Player can play it back properly?
For instance, if the next step is making a DVD, the same QT Movie can be imported into DVD Studio Pro, and all I have to do is to identify the track as "16:9 letterbox" and it'll play back in DVDSP in correct aspect ratio. Am I correct in thinking that the QuickTime Player still doesn't allow me to do something this simple after all these years?

That is strange ... I just ran the test again. Heres the steps I tested.
First, I created a DV PAL anamorphic sequence in FCP 5.1.4 (QT 7.4.1)
Then I added a 10 second color matte to the sequence (Video Generators>Matte>Color)
Finally I exported the timeline in using 3 different methods:
    1) Export >Quicktime Movie w/Current Settings, Self Contained
    2) Export >Quicktime Movie w/Current Settings, Recompress All Frames, Self Contained
    3) Export >Quicktime Conversion >>Quicktime Movie >>>DV PAL, and specifying specifically that the aspect ratio was 16:9
    Results:
    1) Movie played 4:3 in QT Player ... enabled "Conform aperture to: Clean" and it played 16:9
    2) Movie played 4:3 in QT Player ... enabled "Conform aperture to: Clean" and it played 16:9
    3) Movie played 16:9 in QT Player ... "Conform aperture to: Clean" was enabled already
So I've just tried to see if I can force it NOT to work...
    4) Export >Quicktime Conversion >>Quicktime Movie >>>DV PAL, and specifying specifically that the aspect ratio was 4:3
    Result:
    4) Movie played 4:3 in QT Player ... "Conform aperture to: Clean" was enabled already.
So the only way I can seem to make this not work is if I go out of my way to tell QT that its NOT anamorphic and that it really is 4:3 ... then QT Player takes me at my word.
Odd that you're not seeing this. I wonder if its version specific?

  • Exporting from Quicktime for optimal editing in FinalCut Express

I've read that it is recommended to export H.264 for best quality in Quicktime, but Final Cut Express doesn't play H.264 in real time. It forces you to render if you want to edit in the timeline. What is the best format to export from Quicktime in to enable real time editing in FCE?

To convert the file so that FCE doesn't need rendering you need QuickTime Pro and do the following:
    - open the file
    - menu File > Export...: then select +Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie+ and click Options.
    - In the +Video > Settings+ dialog select:
    - Compression Type: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (or DV-PAL) and make sure that:
    - Frame Rate: 29.97 (or 25), Quality is Best, Scan Mode: Interlaced, Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (or 16:9 if anamorphic)
    - In the +Sound > Settings+ dialog select:
    - Format: Linear PCM, Channels: Stereo (L R), Rate: 48000, Quality: Normal, Sample size: 16 bits
The result is a .mov file (not .dv) that doesn't need rendering when imported to FCE to a sequence with setup DV-NTSC (or PAL).

  • Export as quicktime versus vimeo

    hi,
If I export my movie as a quicktime movie --versus choosing Vimeo-- it seems to take a long time (over an hour). It hasn't finished yet, so I can't see the size, but I did this since many suggest this is the best way. I chose H264, current frame rate , data rate 5000, size 1920x1280, audio 44.1, etc., etc.
I wonder why it's taking so long this way?  Did I not check some necessary box to indicate the right compression?

I am done editing a video (usually a sermon message) and not only have I already checked it as anamorphic, but it plays like that in the preview (?) screen inside of FCE.
I want to create an MOV that is of the highest resolution, as to have a digital master. So, I go to "File" and then "Export Quicktime Movie". Yet, after it is done exporting, when I view it with Quicktime (or in Preview, using spacebar)-it is square (4:3).
The only workaround is to export using quicktime conversion and make sure I select 720 x 480 (16:9), but in doing it this way, it is compressed-which not only takes a heck of a lot longer, but it is not the highest quality.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

  • Can't export to Quicktime in proper aspect ratio.

    I'm working on a project with a:
    -Canon XL2
    Set to:
    -16:9 SD
    -24p 2:3:3:2 Pulldown
    Capture Preset:
-DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal Anamorphic
    Sequence Preset:
    -DV NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98
When I try to export to Quicktime it smashes the image from the left and right. The Quicktime window appears to be displaying a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for some reason it distorts the image and places black bars on both sides. Does anyone have any idea what kind of export settings I should be using for this? If you need more info to answer my Q. just ask...I will be monitoring this post closely.
    thanks,

I've tried exporting in several different ways. My first attempt was just the obligatory Export: Quicktime: Current Settings. Then I played around with the various settings to no avail. Unfortunately, I'm really not sure what the difference is between exporting to Quicktime and using Quicktime conversion. I also don't know the difference between 23.98, 24@25, and 24. Maybe if I understood the settings it would be easier to figure out.

  • Trouble exporting anamorphic material

So I'm simple trying to export a quicktime from an dv-pal anamorphic sequence and everytime I do it comes up as 4:3 frame size. I use the 'Current Settings' tab and failing that tried dv-pal anamorphic both exporting out as 4:3. I probably not doing something incredible simple, but I literally can't figure out what!?
Any help may save me losing more hair.
    cheers, Matt

    Matt,
Anamorphic DV is 4:3 ... thats why it appears so when you play it back in QT Player ... what you need to do is set a flag in the exported movie that tells QT player to stretch the movie back out to the intended aspect during play back.
Open the movie in *Quicktime Player*, then open the *Movie Properties* window (Cmd - J)
Switch to the Presentation tab and change the *Conform Aperture* To popup to Production
See if that works for you
    Cheers

  • Aspect ratios exporting to quicktime

Apologies if this is a hoary old newbie question and please do point me in the right direction if there are other threads on the same topic.
I’m editing a short originally shot on digibeta 16:9, then dumped down onto DV for digitising in. I’m having trouble keeping the aspect at 16:9 when I export to Quicktime.
The imported clips need ‘anamorphic’ checked to push them from 4:3 into 16:9 for editing, and almost every time I export the timeline to Quicktime, it comes out as 4:3. I’ve tried loads of different combinations of export settings but can never hit on the right one twice, let alone quickly. It’s not helped by FCP defaulting back to, well, its defaults each time.
So my question is: What boxes need to be ticked, settings set, etc. to export to a 16:9 .mov? I’m after streaming quality to do rough cuts people can view online.
    many thanks
    SD

You should use Compressor for this if you're not already using it.
Export the squeezed movie from FCP, and bring it into The Compressor Batch window. Your clip will appear in the window with a "Setting" column to the right of the clip name. Click the pop-up to apply a setting.
You will see all of your codecs with the QuickTime Web Download settings most likely toward the bottom.
Select the settings that you need.
This will show information for your setting in the Inspector window. Towards the top of this window, you will see a series of buttons under the name & description fields. If you hold your mouse over them, the name of that preference will pop up. Click on the Second to the last on the right which is "Geometry".
Here you can chose your frame size, pixel aspect, etc. At the bottom, you will see "Constrain to display aspect". If you click that menu, and select "16:9", and then click "Submit" in the batch window, your movie will be exported in the proper 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • Final Cut Pro - Export to Quicktime Movie...

I am in a pickle. I have recently completed a project using Final cut pro 6.0 and wish to Export the project so I can create a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. I have also recently exported 3 sixty minute movies perfectly fine but for some reason this recent one wont.
The Settings I am using are - DV PAL 48 kHz Anamorphic (as Im using a 16:9 format) It starts normally and says Writing Audio and Video, then Estimated Time: About 2 hours, this goes up to '9 hours estimated' then begins. After 1% being completed it 'Unexpectedly quits.'
I can still export using Quicktime conversation and via compressor but want the quality and chapter markers. I cant figure out why is doing it especially seen as it was fine a few weeks ago.
I have tried it again and now im coming up with a message saying "The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the KGCore plug-in." Firstly what is that and is it a possible solution?
    Please Help

    LATEST UPDATE.
If i try and export one project it unexpectedly quits with the first problem, 0-1% done.
If i try and export a different project it come up with the second problem 'KG Core plug-in'
Both are from the same project just different sequences

    Hi Chadders_23,
I find if you export to Compressor instead of Quicktime movie you have more control over format, aspect ratio, frame rate etc. Compressor also has templates (for DVD SP) which you can customize and save for your work-flow. It also allows you to batch for multiple compressions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Exporting Anamorphic scenes

    Hello,
In one project I added a new anamorphic scene Scene2. When I export this scene, I get a correct widescreen video. I added this scene in front of my anamorphic Scene1. When exporting this, I get a letterboxed video.
How is this possible ? How can I export it to a widescreen video ?
    Thanks,
    Hubert

    All item properties are anamorphic.
Hubert, is that true for all sequences as well as clips?
It should be true for every item and it should be true BEFORE inserting clips in the timeline.
edit : If you didn't do it this way, do it again...
Also: Which export method are you using (File > Export Quicktime movie, or Export Using Quicktime Conversion? The latter will gives you the option to set the Aspect Ratio, when choosing Export Using Quicktime Conversion > Quicktime Movie > Options > Settings > [DV - PAL] > Aspect Ratio. Be aware that are a lot other settings that cab go wrong there.

  • Downscaling animation from HD targa to anamorph quicktime

    Hi
I'm trying to figure out what the best and safest way is to downscale HD (1920x1080) targa image sequences to 1024x576 or anamorph quicktime. As we need to deliver the production on digibeta, but keeping the door open for HD deliveries in the future.
I decided to downscale the targa frames to the right size to avoid sluggish editing and gigantic amounts of diskspace, and I can reconnect the edits to HD files if needed.
I've decided to use Graphicconverter for this job as the batch converter can do the complete job automaticaly, and there's several different settings for downscaling. I tested and found out that the 'lanczos3' setting works best on thin lines etc.
Now the fastest way to use quicktimes from these targa's would be to save the image sequences as quictime (not the export) creating a movie file in the tga (uncompressed)format. If I use these in fcp with a sequence on tga codec I don't have to render and the uncompressed files play reasonably well. I could also export the sequences in animation codec which is high quality, but it takes more time of course. You'll probably advise me to use intermediate instead but I've checked quality, and it's not as good as 'animation'.. for animation. Or am I doing something wrong ?
Another way of working would be to just edit everything in HD in the first place and downscale it during rendering. anyone has any experience with this ? Are there any settings to consider in fcp for this job (without screwing up thin lines)
The problem here would be that uncompressed tga quicktimes down play smoothly in fcp. So I would have to export it all with animation codec, and editing would probably go slower due to the size.
Anyone has any tips for me ?
    Thx for helping out

Kanna -- who did all the hard work -- has found an import change Apple made in 8.0.1. It appears that Apple decided that since HDV camcorders always claim the footage is 1080i -- that it would modify the way FULL works. Even though the video becomes 1920x1080 AIC -- when the files are used in editing they are automatically BOB deinterlaced losing about 30% of its vertical resolution.
Because it's progressive you can safely add all FX!
And, the quality is still much better than importing at LARGE where about 40% is lost on both dimensions.
Apple, with HDV, simply ignores the data that my iMakeFullHD modifies.
PS1: I now suspect that rather than discarding a field as has been claimed to happen with DV -- DV is really BOB deinterlaced.
PS2: Kana's work also opens a window into how v8.0.1 changed how AVCHD. When imported at FULL, I suspect 1080i is NOT chopped to 960x540 (540p) but is simply BOB deinterlaced to 1080p. It was this change that AUTOMATICALLY fixed the bug that screwed-up exporting 1080i to 720p.

  • How can I export via QuickTime in iMovie '13 (10.0)?

Prior versions of iMovie had an export via QuickTime option, which allowed me to select the file format, encoding settings, etc. After upgrading to the new iMovie, that appears to have gone away. The Share -> File option does not allow me that level of control over the output file. Has that functionality been removed from iMovie?

I'm also having trouble with this. The new version of iMovie lost a lot of its features and is clearly focused toward the social media side of things. After importing using SD cameras that import video in a *square* PiP format, I am finding it impossible to update any of my settings to export the video in any other format that wouldn't cut out the picture. Basically, the only settings I've found in the share option of the iMovie 10.0 cu off the tops and bottoms of all my recording. Previously, I used QuickTime settings to pick what format and quality I wanted to export in. Does anyone have any insight about how to export using, say, a 640 x 480 format or in being able to adjust to any format other than the standard ones giving.
Is there any other video software I can be using to import and export with that gives me more functionality?

    Hi Barbara
Are your photos in iPhoto or are you using some other Photo Software?
The latest version of iPhoto is a lot different than iPhoto 6 for example. In iPhoto 06 you could burn the Originals from your User Picture Folder using Finder, while in iPhoto 11 it is best to burn them from within the iPhoto Application.
Open iPhoto and select the Event(s) that you want to burn onto the CD, then select Share on the menu bar and click Burn in the drop down.

Then again, maybe you got a bad batch of blank CD's and need to try another?
