Exporting as grayscale PDF

I am using WinXP, InDesign CS2. Whenever I design a document, with all grayscale objects, and I want to export as a pdf. The document becomes RGB. It need it to stay a true grayscale. How do I make this happen?

In my understanding - I'm not a native English
speaker - the word Grayscale refers mainly to gray
raster images which were saved by one channel.
I had copied some text from a Word file (trying to
identify the source of the bugs) and pasted into a
new ID doc.
Then I had used Export to PDF with 'No Color Conversion'.
According to 'Output Preview' it's a K-only file.
Loaded in Photoshop as CMYK it appears as 100% K-only.
Loaded in Photoshop as Grayscale it appears by a
CMYK-interpretation in the Info Palette as a 4-plate
'rich black' file - obviously a misleading interpretation.
Alternatively I had used Print as Composite Gray to PDF.
The result was the same.
In my humble opinion it would be very helpful to use
the word 'Grayscale' only for gray raster images.
Vector graphics and text may be gray, but they should be
defined by CMYK = 0 0 0 K.
Sources from Word had caused trouble in the past (but not
in the actual test). Anyway - the text can be selected and
converted into K-only.
For further discussions it would be useful to explain, by
which tools the final PDF had been interpreted (e.g. Photoshop
or Acrobat Pro or Quite a Box of Tricks).
Peter,
good points: Text as Black, and the accurate measurement.
In Photoshop one needs one-point-sampling instead of averaging.

• Cannot export to PDF with grayscale PDF in layout

IDCS5.5, MacPro, OSX 10.7.4
I am working on a grayscale teacher’s guide that accompanies a CMYK schoolbook. The introduction pages contain miniature pages of the workbook (formatted as grayscale PDF), but InDesign refuses to output those pages as PDF ("Impossible d’exporter le fichier PDF"), or when it does produce a PDF (when exporting page by page), Acrobat warns of a possible problem and stuff is missing on the resulting page, not necessarily from the grayscale minipages.
I have tried grayscale PDFs created from the original CMYK PDFs in Acrobat Pro X, grayscale PDFs exported from the original CMYK file in InDesign CS6, PDFs reduced to 20% in InDesign, PDFs reduced to 20% with a third-party application and imported in ID at 100%, and all sort of variations on the export values. The problem is also present in InDesign CS4 (after exporting the file as IDML) and in CS6.
The thing is, there is no problem at all if I use the CMYK PDF version of the minipages (I then turned the resulting PDF into grayscale with Acrobat Pro X). But the printer expects to see only grayscale images in a grayscale job, not color... and a Photoshop version of those minipages is not acceptable.
Has anybody encountered that problem? Can you reproduce it, i.e. can you export to PDF if you use any type of grayscale PDFs in your layout?

FOUND IT! Inspired by Rob solution, I was able to export my InDesign CS5.5 document containing some grayscale PDFs to PDF/X-3:2002 (and PDF/X-1a:2001), with or without the standard, but without converting to destination. For some reason, it does not work with PDF/X-4:2008, nor with any of the other presets.

• Export Grayscale PDF

I use InDesign a lot to create B/W newspaper ads. Many of the images that I use are color. It would be very helpful if I could specify "Grayscale" output when I export a pdf, the same way I can do this if I export an EPS file. Right now, I need to use a two step process (export a grayscale EPS file and then convert it to a pdf using Acrobat) to create a pdf for my printer.

You didn't hear this from me, but you can do what you want by printing to PDF instead of exporting. You should set your "Handling of Black" prefs in ID todipaly all blacks accurately, but print all blacks as RIch Black to aviod 100% K from rendering as 90-something in the PDF.
You can also export PDF and do a conversion to grayscale in Acrobat.

• Export Grayscale PDF from a color InDesign doc

A much needed feature is a setting in the Export as PDF to export a color ID document as grayscale. I, like many designers I'm sure, often am asked to create a black and white or grayscale version PDF of an existing document. Right now I have to create a copy of the document, drop in grayscale images, strip out the colors and replace with tints of black. The other solution is to use Acrobat Pro to do the conversion, sometimes simpler, but not elegant by any means. It seems like it would only make sense to have this option available in the Export panel "Export as grayscale" or something. What do you think Adobe, is this doable?? I see a lot of people looking for it when I Google it.

The question is not whether it is doable, but rather whether any way it could be done automatically would be acceptable. Simply stripping off the color information and using the result often yields results that are very low in contrast with imagery that to put it mildly is not very pleasant.
Those of us familiar with analog black and white photography may recall that black and white films were designed to provide sensitivity to different colors in a manner that would yield realistic results. Even then, serious photographers often used colored filters over their camera lenses to further fine tune the results.
Those of us who often need to create monochrome images from color digital images typically treat each image individually to yield realistic and pleasing results.
Thus, be careful what you ask for. A one-size-fits-all conversion from color to grayscale for a whole document can yield very mediocre results.

• Trouble creating grayscale PDF

Hi!
I have a bunch of grayscale PDS-files, dot grain 20%, that I need to make into a grayscale PDF. This has proven more difficult than I expected. I did a PDF from Bridge with "Output"-"preserve embedded color profile" checked, but it seems that didn't do much. The printing place said it reads like a colour PDF.
Then I tried Acrobat Pro, first to make a new PDF file from my images, and then to convert my earlier Bridge-PDF using "Preflight" - "convert colour to grayscale". That made the images low resolution and dark. The file size went down from Bridge's 140 MB to 45 MB.
Finally I gave InDesign a shot, but I lack the skills to do much with it.. If I put some effort into learning InDesign, will I be able to export one single PDF-file, with the original (or close to it) resolution and tone values, and with a grayscale colour profile?

Thanks for the quick response! They are Photoshop files, saved in Photoshop format. I have also saved the images as hi-res JPEGs with colour profile "dot grain 20%" and tried to do a PDF from those in Acrobat, same problem=dark, low-res, pixellated.
I'm using MacOS 10.6.8 for Acrobat XI, Bridge CS5 and Photoshop CS5, and have access to a PC laptop with InDesign CS6 on it.

• Creating Grayscale pdf file

THIS IS SCARY!! Is there no way with inDesign to create a grayscale pdf file from an inDesign document that uses colour? Specifically - We have a BIG order book that is created from a colour catalogue but the order book is printed black and white only. We NEED to be able to Export the pdf file and specify the output as grayscale (used to do this from QuarkXpress all the time)
PLEASE tell me there is away to do this (that i can't seem to find)!

You can also print to PDF from InD. If any of your type is in a process color, particularly a lighter color such as light blue or something similar, it will come out as a light grey tint and may not be good for B&W printing UNLESS it's a spot pantone to begin with. Then if printing to PDF, be sure to check off "text as black)
Make sure that any reverse heads in the original document are converted to outlines, otherwise, they'll disappear when doing this.

• Export book to PDF doesn't remember previous settings - CS5

I've just noted a somewhat annoying "bug" in the book export. When I export book to PDF--which I do a lot--I have to rename the file and reselect the type of PDF I'm exporting every time. It should remember the last settings I used.I believe in the past that it did.
I also really hate that it always defaults to the interactive PDF--which I will probably never use. Half the time I forget to check that setting, rename the file, click OK, and then have to cancel and go through all the steps again because I forgot that the stupid thing can't remember that I want a Print PDF. I have gone through this annoying misbehavior several times in just the last few minutes. Add that up over all the hours that I work on books and do that export and we're talking about a huge time waster. Am I missing a way to set a defaullt here?

The book export or the regular export? Mine definitely always goes back to interactive PDF. Even after I've saved a print PDF several times. It's really annoying.

• Help with exporting data from pdf form

I have about 100 pdf forms that I created in adobe forms central and distributed as a pdf form (rather than on the web). I am trying to export the data into a spreadsheet but when I export it, the fields are all jumbled in the csv file, as in they are not in the same order. I need to export the data all together so I'm going to the forms menu and selecting "manage form data" and then selecting "merge data files into spreadsheet". I tried exporting a single file but that gave me something really weird.
Please help, I have a deadline next week to analyze this data and can't make sense of it once it is exported to a spreadsheet.

Would you please share your form with me and send me one of your pdf forms and some of the csv files?
You can share your form by doing the following:
1. Click on the “Share” icon on the bottom left corner.
2. Click on “Add Collaborator” on the popup menu.
3. Enter [email protected] under “People to share with”.
4. Set subject to "Export data from pdf form"
5. Click the “Share” button on the bottom right of the dialog.
Thanks

Hello Andrea.
I searched through the SAP Notes for the error that you are encountering. There is an SAP Note that exists titled the following:
1332907 - Report being exported to PDF format using the Crystal Reports for Eclipse 1.x runtime, errors with the exception: PdfExporter: caught Exception in PDFFormatter.finalizeFormatJob
Since you may not have access to the SAP Notes, I will extract the details that are mentioned in the note here:
=============================================
Symptom
Attempting to export a report to Adobe PDF format using the Crystal Reports for Eclipse 1.x runtime results in an exception.
The exception indicates "PdfExporter: caught Exception in PDFFormatter.finalizeFormatJob"
Environment
Windows 2003
Apache Tomcat 5.0
Crystal Reports for Eclipse version 1.x
Reproducing the Issue
Using the Crystal Reports for Eclipse runtime version 1.x attempt to export a report to PDF format that has the "Repeat Group Header on Each Page" option enabled.
Note: This does not occur if this option is enabled in a subreport.
Cause
When the "Repeat Group Header on Each Page" is enabled for a group in a main report the Crystal Reports for Eclipse 1.x runtime is unable to correclty format the PDF document which results in an exception.
Resolution
Updating the application to use Crystal Reports for Eclipse version 2.x runtime will resolve the issue.
The most recent updates to the Crystal Reports for Eclipse runtime can be freely downloaded from the SAP SDN Website.
http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/crystalreports-java
=============================================
Since you are on JRC 11.8.4.1094 which is Crystal Reports for Eclipse 1.x, this may be the cause of your problem.
I hope that this helps.
Regards.

• Hyperion IR 9.3.1 - Issue in printing the report after exporting it to pdf

Hi All,
I am facing a problem in printing the report after exporting it to pdf format using Hyperion Interactive Reporting 9.3.1. I have set page size of report section to 11X17 inch landscape. Now I am exporting this report section to pdf. Report gets exported to pdf with size 11X17 inch landsacpe. But when I am trying to print this pdf it is shrinking the documnet size to A4 size paper and printing it rather it should print it on 11X17 inch paper size. Please suggest if there is fix available for this issue.
Thanks
Ujjawal

"File > Print Setup > Paper > Size" on PDF.
I think this issue is only to do with the printer and not IR.
I think the question now is "Can your printer print 11X17 pages or not".

• Oracle Discoverer - Export report as PDF

Using Oracle Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.1 with Adobe 7 installed. We do not see an option to export as a PDF file. It was my understanding this should be an option. Is there a way to add PDF as an export option?

Hi,
You cannot export to PDF from Discoverer Desktop, however, you can use Discoverer to print to the Adobe PDF Converter print device which will generate the Discoverer report in PDF format.

• InDesign crashes every time I export to interactive PDF??

I am using InDesign CS6 on Windows 7 professional.
I have restarted the computer several times. CS6 is all up to date.
I have experimented on several existing documents as well as brand new documents. It makes no difference.
Interestingly, InDesign DOES export the interactive PDF just fine, I can open it and it works. However, before the document finishes processing, InDesign pops up an error message saying that InDesign has stopped working and must shut down. So when I have many PDFs from various files to export, it's a major pain to have indd crash & recover documents every time.
Files crash no matter what the content, I've tried new doc with only a yellow circle. I've tried new doc using only system fonts.
I've never used interactive PDFs before today, so I have no idea if this is a recent problem or not.
Any help greatly appreciated, thanks!!
-Tia

Peter, ID is patched to version 8.0.2 & I followed the steps to replace my preference (and confirmed they were deleted) and I'm still having the same issue of ID crashing whenever I export an interactive PDF.
I've tested it on all four of our computers here, and it does it to everyone--so I'm guessing it's something system-wide on our part. I am going to trying uninstalling some plugins that we all have and report back later.

• Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpegs?

Using Preview, I export multiple page PDF as jpeg and results are the first page only as jpeg. Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpeg for every page?

Automator is great for this if you need to export many pages to JPG, or just have to do this often.
Two other quick and dirty way sto get it done:
(1) Enable thumbnail view, click on the ONE PAGE you want to convert to jpg, then choose "export." If you choose more than one page, only the first will get exported to jpg.
(2) Create a copy of the file, delete all the pages except the one you want to export to JPG, and export that page. You may be able to "undo" the delete, get all your pages back again, and re-delete all but the one you want to export, etc. I would not recommend doing this on the original version of the file because of Preview's autosave so-called "feature."

• Exporting numbers to PDF

I have created my numbers document. I have exported to Pdf however it looks strange. I have added pages to the PDF from "pages" and the sizes of the pages in PDF are different to each other. This looks very poor. The numbers doc is wider and longer than a4. I opened my numbers document and viewed it in print view to get a better idea of how to fit it to an A4 size. This is successful however when I export it to PDF it does not appear any better. In fact the page view seems to be relevant to only printing the page. I have spent hours on looking through the program and am becoming quite frustrated. The older version (numbers 9) worked a treat and looked fantastic in pdf. I am not too impressed with the new version that is installed on the iMac. I am using Yosemite. Any suggestions or help on this??

Just a guess, but perhaps this is a "legacy" document you originally created in Numbers 2.3 and then opened it in Numbers 3 after the Mavericks update? See if you have the same problem with documents newly created in Numbers 3. If you do not have the same problem in newly created documents, then you can probably conclude that the problem has something to do with that specific document.
If so, you can make a copy of the document and try removing tables and other objects one-by-one until it exports successfully. Then you'll know where the problem is and can go back to the orginal document and remove/"fix" that object.
