Exporting at smaller rate

Imported my CD collection at a low data rate. Plan to redo the entire collection with the new Apple lossless encoder. HOWEVER... I then need to export to my older IPOD - second generation 20 gig... which doesn't support the new encoder at a lower rate. Also need to drop the rate so all files will fit on the 20 gigs. Use this IPod on my motorcycle - love it.
Please advise.

Trying to export a small video using Quick Time conversion

Hi...i apologize if this is a stupid question...i'm still kind of new at FCP. I'm trying to export a small one and a half minute video into a Quicktime file that's less than 1 GB. I exported as a Quick Time movie and it came out to 2.6 GB. I tried compressing using Compressor that and it took over 2 hours so I canceled it. I then tried exporting using Quick Time conversion and it came out to 66 MB, which is more what i'd expect. Except that the picture was only in the upper left hand corner of the Quick time viewer...the rest was black. I tried adjusting the dimensions, etc. but it didn't work. Any idea why this is happening? Are there some standard settings I can use for this? The video is for the internet so I'm not too terribly concerned about the picture quality. Thanks.

What format is your media, Easy Setup and what are your Sequence Settings?
They should all match.
When you export, do so using the following path: File > Export > Export to QuickTime.
Make sure that "With Current Settings" and " Make Movie Self-Contained are selected.
This will give you an independent movie that is not compressed and uses the same codec as your source material.
Depending on how you want to deliver your movie will determine what happens at the next stage.
Post some details about it.

When exporting a small area using in-out points, why does Premiere render audio for ENTIRE sequence?

I'm trying to export a small section of my timeline using in and out points... but it looks like Premiere wants to render the audio for the entire sequence and not just my in-out points.
I added a bunch of audio effects to the entire sequence so it's taking 10 minutes to render this audio. When I click on the cancel button, Premiere just freezes and I have to force shut it down.
Is it possible for premiere to only render the audio in the in-out points I originally asked for to cut down on export times?

Similar problem here but on a Mac. AME is always much slower than directly exporting from Premiere, but if I start to get slow renders a reboot always sorts the issue out.

New export 2gb smaller: How can that be?

I'm not complaining, just astonished. I exported a 108min film using settings imported from Compressor. I'm going to replace the one on Vimeo having made a few edits before sending to film fests. That one was 4.56gb. This one is 2.65gb. The only difference was I choose Streaming in the QT Settings instead of download and High in the the h.264 Profile instead of Main. It took 28 hours instead of 23 and is still 2gb smaller.
Any ideas, explanations?

The choice of profile won't have much more than a very modest impact on size. Nor will the difference between optimized for streaming vs. download. So there has to be another explanation …and since video bit rate will primarily determine size, my guess is that in one of the encode sessions, the bit rate was restricted to some number and other was automatic. Easy enough to check. In the Completed pane, go to the batch and click the curved arrow to restore the batch source file and settings) in the Current pane, Look in the Inspector to see what it shows.

HD export as small as possible

Hello Guys,
I've been strugging with finding a way to export a HD video as small as possible with a decent quality. It would be nice to get this about 10MB for 1 min but my video is way bigger than it, about 40MB for 1 min...It would be very thanksful if you guys help me out.
Here is how I set up this video:
Since I have some opening and ending movies (frame size: 1280 720, frame rate 25.00 fps), I choose the AVCHD 720p25 at the beginning when one has to set up a sequence.
To export the video, I choose H.264 as Format and HDTV 720p 25 High Quality as Preset.
Then I've got a movie which is 40MB for 1 min.
I have been also trying to find a decent way to export it as small as possible by changing a bunch of settings but I haven't got any good results yet.
Besides, I have used MPED Streamclip to compress or convert the video but it's made the video small enough so far..

The smaller the file, the lower the quality.
If you want smaller, don't use the High Quality setting, but use Low Quality.
It is either or in this case. Either a smaller footprint and lower quality, or a larger footprint and a higher quality.
If you don't export at all, the footprint will be as small as you can get, nil.

IMovie HD 6.0.3: After making 10 movies where I clipped portions from a larger clip (and exported the smaller clips), suddenly iMovie clips are much shorter after I export them.

I am using iMovie HD 6.0.3 on an older MacBookPro (OS X, 10.4.11).
I took an AVI video and imported that into iMovie HD.
I then created smaller clips out of that - like editing a 20 minute video into small, 30 second clips.
I made about 10 of these smaller clips, exported them using "expert settings," and burned the results to DVD. These all worked fine.
Suddenly, the final product that I export is much shorter than the clip I created. For example, I'll create a 30 second smaller clip from the original. When I review this 30 second clip, it is what I wanted.
When I export this 30 second clip, it makes a QuickTime movie that is only 23 seconds. (The first 10 I made did not do this).
I tried extending my clip by 7 seconds, hoping to end up with a 30 second clip after exporting. The result was even shorter - like 15 seconds.
I have checked disk space - it has at least 500 GB free space. I have tried exporting the clip to both my laptop and to an external hard drive. The results are the same.
I just tried using the "crop" feature to see if my end product was better - but it was the same.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why did this start after making 10 successful exports? What can I do to get it working right again, as I have 3 more clips to make and am running up against a deadline.

Since I can't edit this post... (Why?) I'd add: fast forwarding and fast reverse (shift key and arrow left or right) the HA files is also not smooth. They play alright. I'm surprised iMovie can't handle them either. I didn't have a problem with the earlier camcorder's HA files... (All were converted MTS files using Movie Converter.)

Help with exporting A Small AVI

I am working on a project for school using my schools computers to edit with Premiere Pro and After Effects cs3. I edited my project and exported it through the media encoder using H2.64 codec ane exported it as a .mp4 and it was slow for the my teacher to show to the class. He says it needs to be an avi but how do i export it as an avi and not have it a large file? The mp4 was only 1.4 gb but how large should the avi be and what would be the best export settings? The clips are 1920x1080 and where converted using cineform's neoscene. Thanks you!

The VT5 is basically a switcher with greatly enhanced capabilities, so is only one step in the chain.
I am wondering if the computer, to which the VT 5 is installed/attached, can handle DivX material (CODEC) in an AVI wrapper. This will rely on that DivX CODEC being installed on the host computer.
If so, you can install the DivX CODEC on your computer and then output MS AVI, choosing the DivX CODEC in the Advanced/Encoding settings. This will result in a highly-compressed file in the AVI format. Though highly-compressed, the output quality for streaming media is very good. Note: you will not need the "Pro" version of DivX, as you will be using only the CODEC (free) and letting PrPro do the encoding for you.
Ask your instructor if the DivX CODEC will be acceptable to him/her. If so, that would be my choice for acceptable streaming quality and small file size, and it will be in the AVI "wrapper."
You did not state if you have an SD (Standard Def), or HD (High Def) Project, or I just missed that. If SD, then the next best choice would be DV-AVI Type II file, but the file size WILL be larger, at ~ 13GB / hour Duration. I would choose this, and deliver the file on an external device, like a stick, or external HDD (7200 RPM).

How do I export a small section of a large complex illustrator graphic?

I have a large complex map in an illustrator file and I need to export smaller sections of the map for other uses. When I use artboards, the files still retain ALL of the information. I just want the portion that is on the artboard and I want it as a vector format, so the smaller areas can still be edited.

Not sure I have enough info to help you, but are a couple suggestions:
Option 1:
Select what you want to keep
Select>Inverse
Delete
Save a Copy
Undo and repeat as needed
Option 2 (requires Script "MultiExporter"):
Assemble elements for export on separate Layers/Artboards
Run MultiExporter Script to export Layers and/or Artboards to separate files (SVG, PNG, etc.)

Exporting a smaller version of QT movie

How can I export a QT movie of a project which is a quarter of the the normal size - each frame being a quarter size (by a quarter I don't mean area - I mean each side is a quarter as long.) I don't have QT Pro.)

A new thread has started about FCE'ers submitting examples of their video work. I (a beginner) have my fabulous first time project video of sheep shearing lasting 5 minutes, which I understand would be about 5 GB. If I wanted to put that forward I would want to reduce the size of each frame (keeping all its contents) to save loading my bandwith (I live in the country and my phone line only works at 500 Kbps) and exceeding my ISP's limit on downloads from my site. By producing a small QT movie of say a quarter size (linear dimensions) the GB would (I think) drop to 1/4 x 1/4 = 1/16, but be big enough to see the movie.

Exporting a smaller file size

I have a client who wants me to upload his 2 min acting reel to a web site that requires the reel to be 15 MB at the most. I have no idea how to get a video that small. It seems to me that the quality would be horrible, but that's what they're asking for. I have uploaded videos to youtube that requires under 100 MB that's no problem. The smallest video I could create from 2 min was about 50 MB. Does any who know how to get videos that small?

In the custom options area of the settings, the things that will make the difference are the keyframing and the "limit data rate" settings. I usually set my keyframes to about 1/2 my frame rate. I think this defaults to "none" which will greatly increase file size. The "limit data rate" setting will force the average data rate below a certain limit, which can help put a ceiling on the total file size. The final file will be a bit larger because of the audio data.
If you are testing different settings, Compressor is great for this because you can save custom presets, and queue up a load of tests from a single source. I recommend testing with a 6-second piece, because you can multiply the result by 10 to figure the file size or encoding time per minute.

How to export in smaller widescreen format than p720?

How can I set presets in PE7 such, that the exported video has the same hight/widh as the original?
I am shooting with KodakZi8 WVGA modus, which is 16:9 but smaller than 720p. In PE7 I only found the option to set to "widescreen" in 720p. In manual presets the height/width fields are disabled. If I export with MPEG widescreen presets, the videos are blown up to 720p and get blurry.
Appreciate hints to FAQs and former threats, too (didn't found any, though)

Video from a still cameras will likely need to be converted to a more traditional video codec before it can be successfully edited in Premiere Elements, per my books and the FAQs to the right of this forum.

AVI files are likely MJPEG-AVIs, and they can be converted with Windows MovieMaker.
MOV files can be converted using Super or, better, Quicktime Pro.
Once your files have been converted to DV-AVIs, you can edit them in a project using the standard DV 16:9 project settings.

DCP export -very small file..?

I'm trying to export a feature film for DCP export and it's been a doozy of an experience so far.
I'm using the latest/updated version of Premiere Pro CC, on a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.10.2, 16GB of Ram. The film is 84mins total, shot on a RED Mysterium, 5K. The timeline had mostly DPX image sequences that were 2K resolution. Please forgive all the fuzzy details, trying to paint the picture best I can.
When I tried to export a DCP from the timeline, each and every time Media Encoder would crash as soon as it started the job. I was exporting at 2K, scope settings, 24fps, Bitrate of 250Mbps, JPEG 2000. Below the estimated file size said 814819 MB. It would load in to Media Encoder and when I started the export, every time it crashed. I tried exporting the same settings directly from Premiere and the same thing; the whole system would crash -immediately. I also tried to simply export a minute of the sequence with the same result, crashing immediately.
I was given the advice to export a master of the entire film as a ProRes 4444 file. I made a few tests, exporting a minute sequence as a ProRes 4444 file, then making that clip it's own sequence -then exporting it as a DCP at the same settings as before -and it worked. Therefore I exported the entire film as a ProRes 4444 file. Took about five hours and it came out to being just over 36GB.
I imported this file in to Premiere and made it in to a sequence, then exported that sequence at the DCP 2K Scope settings, 24fps, Bitrate of 250Mbps, JPEG 2000. Below the estimated file size said 814819 MB. The export seemed to work and took about 17hrs before Media Encoder said 'successful'.
But the problem now is that the files combined say that they're only 9GB. How can that be? I thought maybe I was reading it wrong or that there were some missing files I didn't see so I copied them to a portable drive that I'm planning on using to deliver the movie on -and during the transfer it verified that it was only 9GB. I don't have a DCP player so there's no way that I can check to see what's there, but I was under the impression that it was going to be more like 80GBs.
I have an appointment to watch the DCP on a projector tomorrow but I just can't think that the 9GB file is correct.
If you can't tell already, all this DCP export stuff is new to me so any clarifications are appreciated.

I'm near the end of this project and it's been a learning experience all the way through. It's been comforting to know that if I'm going through anything and/or hitting up against walls, that I'm probably not the first person to go through it. I've found answers to most of my questions through the forums and just in case anyone goes through what I just did, I thought I'd share my 'solution'.
The first problem I was having with Premiere crashing immediately was fixed by going in to AME's preferences and unchecking the 'import sequences natively' box.
I then attempted to export the finished timeline directly as a DCP file. While it worked fine, I cancelled it when the export time started to approach 40+hrs. I was thinking that it shouldn't take that long. Little did I know...
I then exported my ProRes 'master' of the film that I had made earlier and was surprised when it was again only 9GBs. Turns out that I exported the ProRes4444 'master at a much lower resolution than I should have. That was the reason (I believe) that it was so small. Ultimately it was my bad...
I then reexported a new Master from the timeline, ProRes 4444, 2048x1080, and it took 61hrs to export. 61hrs..!? I was surprised by it but at this point I needed it done. It finished yesterday morning (175.5GB) and then I dropped it in to a new timeline in Premiere. I used the RED Camera 2K, 24fps settings. The film was shot at 23.97 fps and I was under the impression that you have to have your timeline at 24fps in order to successfully export it as a DCP. I exported two tests, one 30secs long, and the other a full minute. They both exported fine and I checked them on 'Easy DCP Demo' to see that they worked fine. (Earlier I mentioned that the color was off on the player. I had to adjust the settings on the player to one of the 'color transformation' settings, after that it looked great.) I exported the whole sequence and another 17hrs later, it was done. This time it was just over 17GB.
My original impression was that feature length DCPs were 80/90 GB, or more. Dima mentioned that the file size should be twice the size of the 9GB file. She was spot on as the final ended up being 17GB.
I'll be double checking the work tomorrow at a screening room and if everything goes well, I'll check the 'correct answer' box on my forum. Thanks for the help. If you see anything off about my process please let me know.

LR5 Slideshow export issue - small images

I've been having quite the difficulty exporting 1080p slideshows from Lightroom 5. After exporting to a 1080p slideshow, some images will fill the screen correctly, while others appear much smaller. I rendered full 1:1 previews to try and fix it but that didnt help. Im at a total loss. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know of a solution?
The first image is one that exports correctly, while the second is whats happening with the other smaller ones.

If you Zoom to Fill the Frame you risk loosing part of your image (the Slideshow module works in a similar way to the print module but doesn't allow you to maximise space).

Are you a 100% sure you are using the same settings and the exactly the same version of LR (2 slideshows with LR5.7 for example and the same settings)?

InDesign CS5.5 Export Error: Small fonts

When exporting to a PDF I get a Background Task alert:
Small Fonts: This font could not be embedded because it is missing its font outline file. Adobe Acrobat requires the outline file to be installed for correct viewing and printing of this file.
Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it.
When viewing the PDF that is exported part of my background from my Master Pages is missing however, it prints fine.

Congratulations! You managed to dupe InDesign to use one of the system bitmap fonts that come with Windows since (about) v.3.
"Small Fonts" is a for-screen-only bitmap font, intended to be used at a typical size of 3 to 6 PIXELS. It's a real legacy thing, just like the other bitmap-only-fonts "Microsoft Sans", "System", and maybe a few others. ("Microsoft Sans" is nowadays silently replaced by the system with Arial, I believe.) Those are the real bitmap deal -- designed to be used at their design size, for bitmap purposes only.
The strange thing is that, honestly, *every* self-respecting DTP software programmer *knows* to steer well clear from these ancient relics; and under normal circumstances they are simply not available as a font selection. Let alone, to attempt to include rhem in something as modern (and pixel-font free) as a PDF. Now *somehow* you got a PDF where someone else apparently not only used software that *did* allow him to "use" this font but write it to a PDF as well! Of course that didn't work; this person sent you his PDF, still containing the reference of the font but not the font itself; you placed this PDF called "financial info (etc).pdf" into your law-abiding, top notch modern version of InDesign ... that *is* smart enough not to check just the fonts YOU used in your document but also those inside PLACED PDFs.
There you are, now: you cannot use this PDF because it has a missing font; and this font is one that no sensible piece of software will ever allow you to embed.
Only two options left, here: ask the responsible party for a replacement PDF *without* using this font, or use Acrobat Pro to try and select the text in this font and assign another one (or possibly you have to use something like PitStop).

Resizing an indesign file to export a smaller pdf

Please help! I have created a 120 page catologue in indesign. There are numerous photos linked to the file and the file is huge. I'm trying to export a pdf small enough to download off of a website. Right now the pdf is taking too long to download off the website, therefore I have to decrease the size of the file. Besides decreasing the size of individual photos and re-exporting a pdf, is there a quick fix here? I have tried resizing the catalogue to make it a few inches smaller but this makes the page smaller and not the content. Just want to know if there's a simple solution before I have to spend hours on this. Thanks.

Decreasing the size of the photos in inches will not help and will just waste a lot of time. You need to export the file with fewer pixels in the photos and more compression. Try lowering the resolution in the Compression panel when you export the PDF and trying different compression settings. Be sure to lower the “for images above” setting, too.
But a 120 page catalogue with photos will never be all that small without making the photos look like a close up of a Lego model. This might be an impossible request. If your job is to make this file smaller than a certain size, let us know that size.
