Exporting back to camera

have created an imovie (17mins) which seems fine, but now that I'm trying to export it back to tape in the video camera (which I've done previously without a problem), the recording is stuttering and incomplete. Any suggestions?

Hi MsDella,
Another method, which I've used successfully numerous times, is to use the playback to camera preference - rather than exporting/sharing to camera.
To achieve this, go to the menu iMovie>Preferences, select the Playback tab then check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Press record on the camera and the Play arrow (or space bar) in iMovie. The movie should play smoothly in iMovie and be recorded perfectly on the camera.
The only disadvantage that I'm aware of is that iMovie does not control the camera - you have to do this manually. Otherwise the result is perfect. I've used the same method to transfer movies directly to my stand-alone external DVD Recorder which has a Firewire IN socket. The model is Pioneer DVR-310.
Now that I have an iMac G5 with superdrive, I use iDVD (with its great themes) to burn DVD's, but still use the playback to tape feature for recording back to the camera.

  • How best to export back to video camera dv tape?

I know iMovie no longer has the export back to tape option in 09 version. But, there must be a good way to do it anyway? Does 09 allow me to export to DV (MyMovie.dv)? If so, then I guess I could take that exported file and import it into my old iMovie 6, and then export from there back to a DV tape via firewire. If someone knows a better way, the let me know.
    Thanks

You can avoid all video editors by using an app called SimpleVideoOutX:
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/Introduction/In tro.html
Just download the SampleCode archive, extract the archive and look for SimpleVideoOut X.app. Just drop the video on the app icon to launch the app.
It has been around for MANY years, but not well known. This is a free app created to do exactly what you want. Caveat is, to go to DV, the video file can NOT be higher than DV resolution, or the screen with just show black on the DV camera. But it will work with any SD, or lower, resolution video file that Quicktime will play back. I have watched many videos on my TV this way, and it is MUCH cheaper than an Apple TV, with out the format issues.
You can select DVCPRO HD, Digital Cinema Desktop and FireWire as the output options. For DV, select Output=Firewire, and Mode=Apple FireWire NTSC.
There are a couple other option available at the bottom right of screen to play with, but generally, the defaults work for the majority of cases.
For extensive detail on its use, check this article:

  • Fix for the hanging/exporting from Imovie back to camera tape??

I've been trying to export my Imovie back to Hi 8 tape on my Sony trv480 camcorder and it hangs on both my Imac and my Ibook. I have plenty of memory and have tried all the suggestions that people have made here on the website and nothing works. I hope there is some help out there somewhere because it seems like plenty of other people have had the same problem.

    Hi Mary Ellen
There are miniDV Cameras pref bought in Europe that has the recording
facility (from analog-in or FW-in) disabled because of tax issue.
If so then You can't record back to Camera until You let a Service shop
turn recording on - at a rather pricey cost.
I don't think thay made something this stupid in USA.

  • Exporting from iMovie back to camera

Still have iMovie 6.0.3 and for the first time, when exporting back to the camera, I get the sound but not the video. So, what have I failed to do. Having made about 80 movies, all of a sudden some new problems that I should be able to solve. And I have not tried iMovie 11 yet.

    Hi
You should not need to convert to QuickTime.
I do not use the Share/Export to iDVD function within iMovie - it forces iMovie to render (not good)
    I do -
    • close iMovie
    • open iDVD
    • either find the movie project icon (with a Star on it) and just drag and drop it into
iDVD project/menu window. OR Rather from within iDVD IMPORT the iMovie project
    (still same with a Star)
This put's it in place - drag and drop can land it in a button area - will not work.
NOW - iDVD will render it and so much better.

But say i have an imovie project with content up to 1 hour 57 minutes total> dont I have to go to idvd if i am going to change aspect ration to 4:3 and choose rendering quality?
When you just drop it into the idvd menu are you asked which template to use?,
and how does it actually render it better?
Many of my movies are a mix of HD and SD due to timeline type of movies spanning years, so up to 2 hours of imovie content, and i do 4:3 ratio because of people that watch dont have 16:9 T.V's, and then i select say best quality or performance so that i know it can fit on one SD disc?
The way you describe are you asked the same questions inside iDVD?
and if so or not, how does the video actually get rendered " better" in iDVD?
OH ALSO WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REASONS to export imovie project back to camcorder?
i have never tried this, and would like to know some of the reasons? thanks again again
thanks so much, very interested in upping my movie quality

  • Question for Sue and others - Problems exporting back to Mini DV tape

    Hi there Sue
This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned in another of your posts:
"In the past, many posters reported this type of problem. There is a workaround that I realize should not be necessary, but it has helped many.
Instead of exporting to the camera, "Share" your iMovie video as a QuickTime Full Quality DV
Import this QT movie into a NEW iMovie project.
Then export (share) that to your camcorder.
It does take time to convert the imovie to QuickTime, but in the end it should work."
I have a similar problem where that when I want to back up by edited movie back to mini DV tape, there might be the occasional 'dropped frame' or image break up that appears from time to time on my back up tape. This then renders this back up useless for my purpose. Currently I select 'share' and then 'video camera' to perform this action. Sometimes I think that its Imovie's fault that these errors occur and sometimes I blame the video camera - who knows?!! One thing I do notice is that when looking at the video transferring from Imovie to Video tape, any error wont show on the Imovie window, but will show on the video camera flip out screen. I wonder if it means that it is the video camera's fault?
Do you think that your process might cure this problem?
    Many thanks

    Hi lorddim1,
In addition to Sue's great advice, another method of exporting to your camera may solve your problem - a method which I always use with success. In iMovie's Preferences (Menu>Preferences), check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Set your camera to the VCR (Play) position and simultaneously click the Play button in iMovie and the Record button on the camera (or camera remote).
After exporting to tape, it's best to then un-check the Preferences box, as leaving it checked can sometimes mute the audio playback in iMovie in some versions.
The quality of the export is identical to that using the "Share" feature in iMovie. It may also help to set the iMovie Preference for Playback to "Standard (smoother motion)" and to ensure that, in the Timeline, "Show Clip Volume Levels" and "Show Audio Waveforms" are not activated (go to the View menu for these or Control-Click on the audio track/s). The less iMovie has to worry about, often the smoother the playback. Please note that the Playback preference has no effect on the quality of the export - it's only a setting for playback on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!

  • Exporting to DV Camera and Audio is 1 second off! HELP!!! Deadline Looming!

Hello. I am working on a video project for my brother's wedding on Friday. I have the video completed and all I need to do is export it to my DV Camera (Canon GL1). However, whenever I try to export from iMovie (HD 6) the audio is always a second or so off. I have lots of video that is synchronized to the audio and this renders my whole project worthless unless I can get an answer to this problem. I SOO appreciate your expedient feedback!!!

Hi Peter - here's a possible workaround. Share the movie to Full Quality QT, re-import that to a new imovie project (it will import as one long clip), and share back to camera from there.

  • How can I keep 16:9-format when exporting to the camera

Yesterday happened something, what never happened before:
A movie recorded in 16:9, edited on IM HD6 in 16:9 can only be exported back to my Sony HD-Camery in 4:3. Camera is preset for 16:9. That means, the globe in my movie is becoming an oval! When I imported this "Oval"-Tape back to an new iMovie-Folder, it is again 16:9.
    Can everybody unravel that mystery?
    Thank you for help.
    iMac, iLife   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Intel-iMac, Sony HD-Camcorder

Besides starting with a 16:9 iMovie Project you must choose the "Expert Settings" when exporting to QuickTime.
Choose DV Stream. Double check those settings by clicking the "Options" button. This is where you'll find the aspect ratio for your DV file.

  • Why is sharing HDV iMovie Project back to camera not in real time?

The posting from Michel Raymond on Dec 22th, 2009 asked the question of why is the transfer of iMovie HD Project to camera so long. In his case a 50 minute iMovie Project would have taken 1300 minutes to transfer had he proceeded.
In my posting of Dec 18th I pointed that my 57 minutes 48 GB HDV Project would have taken 43 hours to archive back to camera on mini DV tape.
Bengt Warleby, in his reply on Dec 23rd to Michel Raymond's posting, said that " to copy back to camera (mini DV tape) should take same as movie duration".
So I carried out a simple check of this possibility by downloading 6 minutes of HDV original footage to make a new 6 minute 4.2 GB iMovie Project. No editing was carried. ie no voice-overs, no transitions, nothing extra at all to modify the original footage. I then shared this Project back to the same video camera from which the original footage had been downloaded.
The first stage , "Mixing Audio" was very quick, less than 1 minute.
The 2nd stage of "Encoding" TOOK 23 MINUTES!
The final stage of "Writing to tape" took 6 minutes.
SO, IT TOOK A TOTAL OF 30 MINUTES TO TRANSFER BACK A 6 MINUTE iMOVIE PROJECT TO CAMERA.
WHY? Why was further encoding required when no changes or additions had been made to the original footage? Why was it not transferred back in the same real time as it was downloaded?
HELP.! I really need to have some answers.

.. Is it possible to open the '09 project with '06 to utilize the share to camera feature in '06?
in iM09, choose Export using QT, and for SD choose dv-stream, HD choose QT/AppleIntermediate.. these are the only two codecs in use in iMHD6.. don't be surprised: ~13/40GBs/h ..
Is Apple considering an update to add the share to camera feature to '09 or possibly in a future version? It's a valuable tool for archiving to tape rather than DVD/HD.
speculation, esp. on future  products is not allowed as topic on this board..
.. imho, this feature was axed&buried finally with iMHD6..

  • Can I create m2ts file to put back to camera?

I have Sony HD SR11E and no problems manage m2ts files inside CS4.
I'd like to put edited stuff back into camera, very useful for trainings, presentations and so on, also portable HD source.
Some sources say AVCHD is MPEG-4, AME offers MPEG4 but this particular is definitely not AVCHD.
Is there any format CS4 can create which is readable by Sony Picture Motion Browser?

There are lot of people looking solutions for that.
    One response(http://www.sonyhdvinfo.com/showthread.php?t=10888) was:
The recently released Vegas Pro 8 does accomodate rendering back into .m2t & .m2ts formats. I just did a test video, exported it back into my HDR-SR1 and played it on my LCD TV via HDMI with the original AVCHD picture quality.-end quota
:) thanks for warning, oyrtek :P And punch of people also complaining about Nero 8 and up - (horrible, ugly-these are only some words they use , lol.Propably they looking only DVD writing software inside it, but as i understand, Nero is much more now) Downloading trial, also checking what Vegas does.

  • Lose sound exporting movie to camera.Scene selection problem

Dear friends, thank you for your time!
    I have 2 painful questions!
1-I have Macintosh G5. New! I can't export my edited movie back to camera with sound of music that I add to my movie. Sound of shooting is there but not an additional track of music from CD
2-I tried to burn a DVD, but I can't split my movie into parts. It is a wedding, and I want separate parts of the wedding-ceremony, reception, blessing... I used chapters markers in iMovie program, but in DVD project it is going like that: Ceremony and everything after that, next scene is reception and everything after that, next scene is interview and everything after that. Something small is missing, that I do not understand. How do I end each chapter so it does not run on?
    Thank you!

    Hi Vera
    My main guess.
There is a factor if the sound is recorded with 12 bit or 16 bit in the Camera.
Many Cameras are factory preset to 12 bit sound (to make it possibly to
add sound directly in the Camera - for those without a Mac)
Change this with the menu on Your Camera and try again.
This is of Course if the sound is OK in iMovie. Play to the end of Your project
and be very observant on the sound at the end part of it.

I want to open excel spread sheets make additions and export back to pc users.  Is numbers suitable for this activity?  I am using a MACBook Air

just read this in an other answer:
Pages can open docx files, Numbers can open xlsx files. Each can export to  can export .doc or .xls to the newest Word or Excel format.respectvely, but not to the more recent .docx or .xlsx.
Translation is not perfect in either direction. Numbers and Excel handle some similar features (eg. pop-up menus vs data validation) differently, and the translator cannot translate from one implementation to the other.
If much of your work is going to be transferred between your machine and Windows machines running either MS Excel or MS Word, with editing taking place at both ends of the tunnel, then you'll probably be better off with Office, or one of the Office clones on the Mac end.

The back up is supposed to be a rolling back up and therefore may still contain data from previous back ups. To free up space you may wish to delete the back up and start again.

  • Back facing camera doesn't work!

My back facing camera on my ipad2 doesn't work. The shutter will not open to take pics or video. I have tried rebooting iPad and resetting it and nothing works! I was hoping for an at home fix instead of sending it in cause I'm afraid to lose some photos I put on ipad2 from my computer cause I recently lost my hard drive! I can't back those ones up with i cloud or iTunes ( I don't think so anyways). Thanks, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Dian-
You should take care of the photos first, before you worry about the camera.  Once you get your computer repaired (or get a new one) you need to get it authorized for your Apple ID, and find a way to back up the iPad without erasing it.
Search for an Apple Authorized Repair Center near you.  They should be able to advise you on how to save your photos.  (I see that there is Capitol Macintosh in Lansing, MI.)

  • Importing/placing pdfs and exporting back to pdf

If a client sends me a pdf in which i need to add printer marks or crop slightly, or convert a spot to process or whatever I usually place the pdf file into a new ID CS3 file, make my changes and then export back out to pdf using my pdf preset. My question is, is this a good practice and can the original pdf lose any quality either in contone images or type/lineart after doing so? In my pdf preset I have compression set to none, save to Acrobat 4 (PDF1.3). Thanks.
    -Mark

Images in PDFs are usually downsampled and compressed as JPEG. JPEG compression destroys image data. If you place a PDF then save as a PDF then you are effectively adding destruction to image data, unless you use Zip or None compression. However, in the case of press quality PDFs that damage is miniscule and likely does no visible harm.
Have you tried making these changes to the PDF directly using Acrobat Pro? With Acrobat you con convert spot colours to process and add printer marks.
