Exporting Book as PDF, page range?

Is it possible to export a book as a PDF with a page range? The page range option is grayed out?

For exporting to PDF from a book, it works different than an individual document. If you only want some of the book chapters going to PDF, select only those chapters in the book panel. Then Export to PDF... becomes Export Selected Documents to PDF....

  • Export book to PDF doesn't remember previous settings - CS5

I've just noted a somewhat annoying "bug" in the book export.  When I export book to PDF--which I do a lot--I have to rename the file and reselect the type of PDF I'm exporting every time. It should remember the last settings I used.I believe in the past that it did.
I also really hate that it always defaults to the interactive PDF--which I will probably never use. Half the time I forget to check that setting, rename the file, click OK, and then have to cancel and go through all the steps again because I forgot that the stupid thing can't remember that I want a Print PDF.  I have gone through this annoying misbehavior several times in just the last few minutes. Add that up over all the hours that I work on books and do that export and we're talking about a huge time waster. Am I missing a way to set a defaullt here?

The book export or the regular export?  Mine definitely always goes back to interactive PDF.  Even after I've saved a print PDF several times.  It's really annoying.

  • Is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut for "Export book to PDF"? (Cannot find it in the Keyboard Shortcuts window.)

I'd like to create a keyboard shortcut for the "Export Book to PDF" command on the Books panel menu, but I simply can't find that command in Keyboard Shortcuts. After not finding it in what seemed the logical place (Keyboard Shortcuts > Product Area: Panel Menus > Book), I've looked through all the Product Areas listed on the dropdown menu -- but it seems I must be missing something.
What do I need to do / where do I need to look to assign a keyboard shortcut for this command?

Sorry, I agree that that is missing in action. I don't know of a workaround unless someone has written a script. Scripts can be called with keystrokes.

  • Export Book to PDF does not honor chosen PDF preset

When I choose "Export Book to PDF" from a book panel in InDesign CS4, and select an Adobe PDF preset, the resulting PDF has downsampled images even though my preset specifies no downsampling for images of 300ppi or more.
No downsampling occurs when I export each book document to PDF through the File menu.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, when I print a book, linked Illustrator files with status of OK are rendered like low resolution screen previews if they are not in the first document.

I ran Preflight on both books and found no issues, no missing or modified links. I don't have any copies of the documents in the books, so that's not it.
But you did point me in the right direction. InDesign was not checking the links before exporting or printing books.
If I go to Preferences > File Handling and select "Check Links Before Opening Document" and "Find Missing Links Before Opening Document" InDesign exports/prints the links instead of the previews. Problem solved! Thanks.

  • Crash when exporting Book to PDF

I am trying to export a Book (17 documents, 1822 pages) to PDF. It keeps crashing on the 7th document. I can export that document by itself (148 pages), no problem. I can export documents 1 thru 6 together (472 pages) , and 8 thru 17 together (1202 pages), no problem. But when I try to export the entire book at once, it crashes or freezes on that 7th document. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it freezes.  I've tried exporting that document to .IDML. I've rasterized two embedded PDF's that are on the page where it freezes, just in case there was something corrupt in those PDF's. I'm at my wits end ...

OK, I THINK I have this solved, it is still exporting but has gone beyond the trouble spot. The entire export process takes almost 30 minutes, and I'm only 10 minutes in, but here is what I found. The problem images came from Excel. At first I thought it might have been because I just copied and pasted them from Excel, so I went back and exported them as PDF's from Excel and "placed" them in InDesign, but that didn't solve the problem. So then I rasterized the PDF's in Photoshop, and that seems to have worked. I'm not sure why these particular images created a problem, because I have many other charts from Excel scattered throughout the Book.
Here is the process I used. Instead of "packaging" the whole works, I just duplicated the file I thought was the offending one and left the duplicate (Copy 1) in my working folder. I deleted a group of pages in the duplicate, then "replaced" the file in the Book with this duplicate and ran the export to PDF process, recording the results as Test 1. That test worked. I duplicated the original again (Copy 2), deleted another set, and ran the test again, recording the results as Test 2, and so on.  Test 7 is the one that seems to be running successfully right now.
John, I really appreciate the quick and comprehensive answers and discussion regarding this problem, it helped me focus on a process that isolated the problem and allowed me to fix it.
BTW, the issue of "packaged" images overwriting others with the same name happened in PageMaker. It was panic time when I printed out a final proof of my work, and the same figures kept showing up over and over in different authors' articles. I don't know if it would occur in InDesign because I don't send InDesign files to the printer ... they all seem to prefer PDF's, which is easier for me anyway.
Now that I've taken so long with this response, the export is finished and IT WORKED!  YAY!!

  • Export Book to PDF shows bad colours

    Hi all,
I have created a book in Aperture, starting from a set of RAW/TIFF pictures.
If I preview/export the book in PDF, it looks VERY BAD in the dark areas (posterized to very few RGB tones).
The problem appears ONLY when I use the "Save as PDF" option from the "Print Book" menu, or I make a preview before placing the order.
    What I tested so far:
    - If I export from Aperture each single image to PDF (or tiff/jpg), the problem does not occur!
    - The images look perfect also if I open them from other apps, like photoshop/iPhoto/preview.
    - I created a test book with the images from iPhoto and there the exported PDF book looks fine.
    - I installed Aperture on a different computer (a mac mini recently reinstalled), and the problem is still there.
    Please consider that:
    1. my monitor (iMac 24") is hardware calibrated
    2. the source pictures are in RAW (no color profile on them) and (just a couple) in TIFF (16bit, Adobe RGB). I also tried reimporting in the album jpg converted versions, with no better results.
    3. OS and Aperture are updated to the latest versions.
I would exclude a problem of the source images (because Aperture/iPhoto can export them properly to PDF)
It looks to me like a problem of the PDF rendering engine when used for exporting Aperture books.
Anyone had ever experienced something similar?
    Any advice?
If you want to check with your eyes, I uploaded a few screenshots here:

ps. I've posted this message also on the other Aperture's discussion group, please apologize for the repetition.

  • Page numbering when exporting book to PDF - ID 5.5

I'm having a lot of trouble exporting a PDF from a book file in Indesign 5.5, running on Snow Leopard.
On certain pages it appears to place the page numbers randomly in the middle of the artwork.
I am using master pages for the numbering. On most pages it works fine, but on others this problem will appear.
I understand that 5.5 has had issues with the Export to PDF from a book file, I recently installed an update which I understand was supposed to fix these issues, but the problem still persists.
Has anyone experienced this issue, or have any methods to resolve it? A screenshot is below which shows the correct position on the left, and the incorrect position on the right.
Numbering appears fine in the ID file itself.

Try exporting the files to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting) and resave.

You are probably running out of memory if you are freezing up at around 150 pages. The other possibility is that there is something Lightroom doesn't like about the image being processed once you get to that page, but you would need to test with a different set of images or change the order to verify.

  • Constant trouble exporting book to PDF

I have NEVER had any real luck getting a book to export to PDF with CS5 (nor CS3 previously) on the PC. Constant crashing at various points in the process. I'm now trying to export just a portion of the document to see if that will work. Right now, I'm trying to export the first FIVE files (document has 27 files and 674 pages) only, and it is taking a ridiculous amount of time. I'm watching it open all 27 documents at various times --some chapters REPEATEDLY -- which I guess could have something to do with hyperlinks inside the early chapters leading to the later chapters. Not sure. I suppose this could be a memory issue, but I have been unable to confirm this, and I did re-boot and open only the book so I'd have as much free RAM as possible. Since it happens at various point in the process, I doubt it is a specific image that is causing this, but again, not sure. Does anyone have any suggetions on how to troubleshoot this issue? It is incredibly frustrating, as the time it takes for this process to evolve means that I really cannot get much work done during the day.

    Divide and conquer.
You hit the right idea by deciding to try some chapters on their own.
If these export ok - then they are fine - move onto exporting the next set of files and keep going.
If you encouter a problem then try half of that set again, then the other half and keep narrowing it down.
It could be a faulty book file though - try creating a new Book and then import the documents again and see if that clears it up.
Have you tried opening all the documents before trying to export to print? If all the docs are open it shouldn't need to open them again?
To let you know it's not a bug or anything - I've done books over 3,000 page with about 40 documents per book.

  • Lightroom 4.4 won't export books as PDF or to blurb.  No error messages at all.

    Window 7 SP1, 64 bit
    Lightroom  4.4
I made a 178 page book I'd like to buy but when I press the 'send to blurb' button or the 'export as pdf' button nothing happens.  No pop up screens, no error messages, no progress bars, nothing.
I mad a sample empty book and it gets the right blurb stuff to pop up so it must have to do with the files or the overall size of the book.
I also did a duplicate book of the one I want and tried that but it failed in the same was as the original.
Looking at my windows task manager doesn't indicate the lightroom is rendering anything so I don't believe it's doing anything.

I took this advice found within this thread: Issues when uploading book to Blurb from Lightroom 5
Select Apply Background Globally - turn it off and on several times, then leave it off
Select GRAPHIC - turn it off and then turn it on and off several times
Select BACKGROUND COLOR - turn it on then off then on then off
I did this to the first 10 pages or so and now I got the blurb popup and it appears to be rendering and uploading.

  • Export as Separate PDF Pages with Unique Names

I have an InDesign document that has several pages. I want to export each page as a seperate PDF, but they have to have a unique name that I want to be able to specify.
For example, I want to export page 1 as "calendar page 2014"
Page 2 as "Diary page 2014" etc.
I found some solutions, but they aren't quite what I need:
Export as Seperate pages with image name
This apple script takes the name of the first image on the document and uses that as the name.
However, my document has no images.
    Exportools
A paid tool that offers many options for exporting. However, the name has to be based on a pattern, which is no good for me.
I'm hoping that there will be a script that can take the name from a non-printing area/layer. That way, I can just put the desired name on the page and it will export with that name each time.

have you looked at the extention Autosplit PRO?  This may be what you are looking for.  (Although, I don't think this software is compatable with MAC...but if you find out otherwise, please advise!)
    good luck..

  • Exporting onenote to PDF page settings 2013

I am having the worst time with OneNote 2013: specifically with exporting a printed version of my class notes to PDF.
I am familiar with 'page setup', as well as using a 'custom' size to hopefully fit all my lectures notes in equal page sizes. It just seems like I am missing more settings somewhere embedded into OneNote's page setup settings.
What I ultimately want to do is download the lecture slides, write class notes on them, and export them in a PDF. The only issue the page size for this.  the 'custom page size' will allow to fit the width of the page, but never the length of the page.
Each page has to be printed in 2 pages since I cannot find how to set the length of the page to have the lecture slides fit. Simply increasing the 'height' setting during a 'custom' page size never seems to work frustratingly enough.
I have read how to export pdfs on this website yes, but where you find information about exporting page setups I have no idea.
Hope to hear from someone soon!

Hello. Did you ever figure out how to export with your page setup settings intact? I'm having a similar problem.

  • Exporting to a .PDF page

    Hello,
In this case I just want to edit a single page of a .PDF file, so I've opened the .PDF file with Photoshop and chosen which one I wanted to edit (the last page of a 16 pages file). Now, what should I do to replace the last page of the .PDF file with the one I've just edited?
    Thanks in advance!

Now, what should I do to replace the last page of the .PDF file with the one I've just edited?
That can only be done using Acrobat. Aside from that little problem, it's not particularly sensible to edit PDFs in AE in the fiorst place, since it wil llaways rasterize any text and vector elements, which is detremental to file size and features like printing, accessibility and screen reading. It's simply not the right workflow. If you don't have Acrobat, the only option I see is to rasterize all other pages, save them as JPEG and then use Bridge to combine them into a new folder.

  • Specific PDF page range via URL

    Hi!
We have a 60 page PDF, but would like to be able to only show pages 5-10 (or whatever) via a URL and have parameters in the URL only show pages 5-10.
Is this possible?  It would be as if the URL parameters hide/omit pages 1-4 and 11-60, and simply show the user specific data presenting a "lightweight" version of the original PDF.
    Thank you!

No, this would require a server process to make a subset PDF and serve it.
You can link to a specific page.
Also, when shown in the browser, if a file is optimized for fast web view, it goes directly to specific pages rather than waiting to load the whole file.

  • Combining documents with multiple layouts into a single book for pdf export

I have made a series of documents that feature 3 different layouts, however I would like to connect all these documents into a book and then export 1 layout style from each document into a pdf to form a book. However when I go to the export book as pdf the option to select pages or ranges is greyed out and not clickable for some reason, does anyone know of another way to get around this short of exporting each individual document layout and then merging them as a pdf?

You need to set up the book to contain precisely what you want to export.
However, it is basically better to export single documents and merging them later as PDF, regarding colour spaces, page numbering, paragraph styles, page formats etc.
