Exporting: Dark areas look terrible. Solutions?

Hi all,
I'm shooting 1080p video with a Canon 60D and trying to put together some nice little films with iMovie 11.  Unfortunately, on export, the dark areas always come out looking absolutely awful.  They're pixelated and they almost seem to glimmer.  It looks terrible.  Blacks are obviously the worst but other darker shades suffer from the same problem.  Don't notice it at all in bright shots.
Does anyone know of an export setting to fix this?  If iMovie 11 is incapable of exporting videos with nice looking dark areas, what software should I consider?  It really kind of bothers me.
Cheers!

im06, fce or fcp will output better image quality - in that order, PC too.

  • I imported set of photos but the dark areas looks weird. How can I correct it?

I tried to create a photo slideshow using iMovie. Everything works great except one issue. The dark area of the photos looks weird after import. Please check this screenshot: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s245/sh/bc44cc6d-3ab1-4d4b-91b2-9e466192c2c8/9257 952cec51ec08671cb8083086cf68
Original size of the photo is 4000px in witdh. I also tried to resize it to 800px with same result.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Did you take a backup in between taking the photos and deleting them ? If you did then try restoring to that backup (you will need to restore the whole iPad, you can't just do the Photos app) and they should be put back.
    Backups and restores : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
When you create new albums directly on your iPad and 'copy' photos into them you are effectively just creating pointers to the orginal photos, you aren't creating copies of the photos - so if you then delete the original photo you will also be deleting all pointers to and therefore be removing it from all albums that you've copied it into (you should have got a warning when deleting the photo that that would happen).

  • Dark areas in photos looks different in Loupe and Develope

First let me say that I´ve created a similar thread in lightroomforums.net.
Let me also add that I´ve made extensive research on the web and also read this post: Why does the color and or tone of my image change after import?
    This is my current setup.
    I run lightroom 5.6, OSX 10.10.
I have been shooting with a 7D or a EOS M in RAW, Adobe RGB With picture style set to standard and no JPG´s.
I have imported my photos as DNG´s with no develop settings applied and build previews set to 1:1 (I have tried different settings here).
I have my Catalog Settings / Preview Cache set to 2880 pixels, quality: High (I have also tried different settings here) (I have a very big screen)
    Now to my problem.
Now when I review my photos in 1:1 (or any other size) the dark areas looks good in develop module but when i go back to Loupe the dark areas have a slightly brighter, less contrast look.
This problem only occurs in the darkest parts and does not effect the rest of the image. The overall picture looks the same except for the very darkest parts.
I have tried different monitor calibration settings but the issue persists.
I have tried to create a new catalog, import some new shots but with no difference.
I have also done the same but instead of import to DNG´s I have copied the CR2´s, no difference.
I have tried to optimized the catalog and I have also "Update DNG previews and metadata", no difference.
When "edit file in photoshop CC" the version of the photo that opens in photoshop is the "Loupe" view.
This only happens with RAW/DNG files and not with TIFF or JPG.
Here is a picture that in my case looks very bad in Loupe view but significantly better in Develop View: Dropbox - IMG_3662.dng
I will also try to post two screendumps at 2:1 from the the two views. The picture with more darks in it is the screendump from the develop module and the less dark is from the loupe view.
Why is this occurring? How can I stop it?
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    UPDATE:
I have taken 4 new shots with the same setup as described above.
But with different color settings and picture styles.
    Adobe RGB - Standard
    Adobe RGB - Neutral
    sRGB - Standard
    sRGB - Neutral
With the same results. Dark areas look darker in Develope module.

  • Movie looks terrible when exported. Help!

So i just got back into some video work. I used to know how to video edit, but there has been some time between my once educated stage and now.
To get myself going I installed this old program and used a few files that I took from youtube. I converted the files to WMV's and began to cut away. After some considerable manipulation, music added and what not, i decided to export my project.
Here then enlies my probelm; every time I go to export the project the video looks terrible. The quality is degraded, the cuts between scenes are slower, and what is perhaps most annoying, is that anywhere a clip was manipulated ie (slowed down, reversed, whatever) the size of the clip shrinks to about half the size.
I can't figure out what is wrong, but then again I barely know anything about this program. What could be wrong? The project looks great on the time line. It's only when its rendered or exported that it gets all messed up. The clips are from youtube. the music is just an mp3. Is the footage just not high enough quality? Is the program I have too old? Any information regarding a solution to these problems would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Do you have any other suggestions or advice pertaining to my situation?
    Two:
1.) Use G-Spot to tell you what CODEC is used, and possibly use a different conversion program to get the material into Premiere.
2.) Use a program like one from Moyea, or FLV to AVI. The conversion from FLV to another highly compressed CODEC like you probably used for the WMV will destroy any quality that you might have had.
If you had PrPro 1.5, or later, Moyea makes a plug-in to Import and edit FLV within PrPro. You might want to contact them, just to check if your version, known as PrPro 1.0 in most circles, will work with their plug-in. In PrPro 2.0, the Moyea plug-in works fine. However, when starting with FLV's quality is ALWAYS going to be an issue. There is no way around this.
Copyright issues totally aside, you'd be better off working from a ripped DVD of that Disney production. Do consider copyright issues long and hard. Won't go into the legal issues, but they should be considered.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • PDF exports look terrible - white lines in text

I have been u sing indesign for years and years all of the sudden my pdf exports look terrible. The images are pixelated and the text has white lines
    in it.
I used these pdf previews for my clients and I certainly cant use what Im getting from INDD right now. I have no idea what happened to cuase this.
Wish I could show you but any ideas would be great.
The following text has no formatting on it yet there are pixelated white lines? help?
    Thanks in advance.

Wow - thank you for all the responses. Yes it still happened with different fonts, different sizes of font etc... So I looked at my export settings and noticed that it was set to High Quality Print - Modified. I Switched it back to High Quality Print and it appear to have cleaned it up quite a bit.
Thank you all for your speedy responses.

  • Since 3.3.1, colors of exported files are terrible

When I exported pictures in previous versions of Aperture, colors were fine.  Since updating to 3.3.1 the colors are really terrible.  Is there a way to revert to 3.3 or earlier?  Have others seen this problem?  Pictures look fine on the screen.

    Hi Kirby, thanks for replying.
I right-click the photo and Export Version... then choose one of my presets.
I'm exporting using my lab's printer profile, as I've used for years.  They have a Chromira and have provided profiles for Fuji Crystal Archive in glossy and lustre.  So no change there.  I output TIFF files with black point compensation.  Again, all the same as I've done for years.

  • Animated Graphs looking terrible after exporting

    Hello Anyone,
I've created an graph in Numbers and brought it across to Keynote and applied an animation effect. Then I exported as a Quicktime Movie using a few different Codecs. All look fine and crystal clear when played in Quicktime. But when I import it into FCP it appears okay in the viewer but terrible when in the Canvas even after rendering. I've tried exporting in various formats from FCP, but I'm still unable to get a satifactory result without it looking terrible. Surely there is a way?????

OK...now for the second part...are you looking at this, and judging the quality of the image based on what you see in the Canvas? That is one of the worse places to judge the quality of the image.
Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
The canvas shows you what happens after the codec you are working with has been applied. The viewer shows you the material in its native format.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • HI i have tried so many times to import images, both pictures and video from my hard drive to elements 131, and it keeps coming up with the error message " .....has stopped working we are looking for a solution to this problem etc " please help!

After taking days to upload elements 13 I am now having trouble even trying to import my images and videos into the program for editing. Each time I IMPORT files an error message comes up that says " ....has stopped working, we are looking for a solution to the problem and will notify you if a solution is found"  I have not been able to edit ANYTHING or even drag files/images to the time line.... is it me? is my computer too slow? surely if it was, then Adobe elements 13 would not have installed in the first place? please someone help me sort this out as I have a deadline to make for a docco! thanks in advance Lyddy

From the Premiere Elements Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042180
•You MUST use an account with Administrator Privileges to run Premiere Elements
•(Doing Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 [says Encore and also for "All" versions of Premiere] will sometimes fix "odd" errors)
•What version of Premiere Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Elements 12 with the 12.1 update)
•What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.9.4"---not just "Mac"
•Has this ever worked before?  If so, do you recall any changes you made to Premiere Elements, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.?  Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?
•Have you installed any recent program or OS updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
•What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
•If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
•What were you doing when the problem occurred?
•What other software are you running?
•Tell us about your computer hardware. How much RAM is installed?  How much free space is on your system (C:) drive?
•How many and what speed are your hard drive(s)... ie 5400rpm or 7200rpm or?
    And some other questions...
•What are you editing, and does your video have an orange line over it BEFORE you do any work?
•Which version of Quicktime do you have installed?
•What is your exact brand/model graphics adapter (ATI or nVidia or ???)
•What is your exact graphics adapter driver version?
•Have you gone to the vendor web site to check for a newer driver?
•For Windows, do NOT rely on Windows Update to have current driver information
•-you need to go direct to the vendor web site and check updates for yourself

There are no robots here. Everyone here is a "real person", a user just like you. How about telling us what the problem is that you are experiencing when you try to buy a song? If you mean that you have forgotten your security questions, go to:

Click "Manage My Account", sign in, and go to the Password and Security section. If you've forgotten your answers, there should be a link just under the security questions fields where you can have a reset email sent to your Rescue email address. • Export Problem...The Sky looks terrible

This video was shot a couple months ago so I do not remember any of the settings, I know I mad a few mistakes, I did not modify the picture style like Philip Bloom suggests and I think I had a polarizing filter on.
The sky is not as pixelated in the original file from the camera but every time I export from Premiere Pro CS5 the sky looks like crap.  I’ve been using the vimeo settings for HD which usually looks pretty good.  Most of this will be displayed on my website in H264 format with a player from slideshow pro.
    Any suggestions…….
Is there any single export preset for the h264 that works best for the web around the 700 px wide format?

Thanks for the ideas, I'm a still shooter stat is starting to venture into video for my clients, so I'm a little new to this.  I understand most of the settings you mentioned withthe exception of:
"At 2000kbps, you'd figure an encode would look better--I can get a better-looking encode at about 400kbps."
Could you please explain this or tell me where these settings are?
I've posted a screen shot of my settings.
It seems as if the export settings are not as clear with video as they are with stills.  Do you know good export settings for videos to run on the ipad.  I have one that works, but if I could improve that one too, it would be great.
    Thanks

Not good to export as a Word .doc/x, better to:

  • Everything I export is gigantic and looks terrible with FCE

I have tried exporting a project every way I can think of. Started with a 64MB .m4v i exported from iMovie, have tried custom size, basically every quicktime export option available. Every single movie is 4-5 times the size of the original, grainy, and generally just looks terrible.
I used to use FCPro, now using FCE, and wondering if this is just a limitation of the software or has to do with the source file. Also, FCE won't let me import .m4v files or .mov files. Really frustrated with this program. If I could just figure out how to export a decent looking movie that's a reasonable size I'd be fine with it.

I did a DV export and that file now looks like crap. This is way harder than it should be.
Can't import the files I need into FCE (.mp4 or .mov)
Can't import from iMovie since source files won't import
Can't use iMovie export .m4v cause it won't work with FCE
Can't use iMovie export DV cause it looks terrible.
That's a whole lot of can'ts for what's supposed to be a powerful video editing program.

If you simply would have posted here first, there are plenty of people who would have informed you of the current policy to have a data plan active on an account during the entire contract if purchasing a discounted smartphone.
Unfortunately, there are just as many on here who would claim the people informing you about this policy of being Verizon plants spreading disinformation and trying to make people afraid to upgrade via this route.
Yes this is a new policy, one which has been pointed out multiple times in these forums.  Good luck, but I doubt you will have an outcome over this which will make you happy.
Verizon is closing as many loopholes to keep unlimited data as they can.
