Exporting FCP capture files to Avid??

I just transfered over my raw FCP 6 HDV capture files form my mac to another editor's hard drive who is using Avid Xpress Pro (also on a Mac). Will he be able to import those directly into Avid? If not what conversion process is necessary??
I am concerned because these files, which play back fine on my Mac via Quicktime, do not play back on his Quicktime! I was able to play the files back via a program called VLC. Why is this--when I installed my Final Cut Studio were there special codecs/ Pro Application Support files that he does not have because he is using Avid?
Thanks for the insights!! (And suggesting to him that he should use FCP isn't going to work!)
--Robert

when you export then what is the extension, like .MOV, .MP4, M4V.? if there is not one just get info and in the name and extension line just add it. you will want to add .MOV to the end of the name. when you do this is will ask if your sure that you want to do that, say yes. also if he is using a mac make sure his QT is up to date. another thing to check is when you copy files over check the size of the files, you can do that by getting info by control clicking and selecting info. you will know if they seem too small then you are not copying everything over.

    HI Ya'll,
Challenged Montanan back from the south.... (but leaving again).
My challenge is to send DVD's to my editor in LA la so he can cut a new demo for a presentation coming up in Guatemala.
    Here is what I did:
Took the capture files (Quicktime) from the Scratch folders and burned them to DVD. Then I checked them on the laptop. Looked great.
Just got a call from the guy in LA. He has audio but no VIDEO... how ? The extensions are off. and He is on a PC. I'll get more details.
I paid for him to upgrade from his quicktime to QT Pro --no difference...
These are HD files and show up great on our time line here. Should this work or did I screw up something???

  • FCP captured files showing as Unix Executable

I know there's been a bit of discussion about this problem but I wanted to see if someone could shed a bit more light on my situation. For the past few years we've been doing all our video capturing (using FCP 5.1.4 capturing in HDV) and editing on a PowerMac G5 running 10.4. Once finished with a project it would get packaged to a larger Dell file server. When we upgraded to a new imac and FCP 7 all of our projects mov files were showing up as Unix Executable. I tried chmod -x but it didn't really solve the problem. What does work is this:
    1. Transfer an entire project from the dell file server to my PowerMac G5.
    2. Connect to the PowerMac G5 from my Core i5 iMac through network.
    3. The project movie files from the G5 show up normally in the finder of my i5.
    4. Connect to dell file server from my i5.
    5. Transfer files from the G5 to the dell file server via my i5.
    6. Files show up properly from the dell server on my i5.
Now this is all well and good cause it seems to work. The problem is we have thousands of files and terabytes of projects. Obviously OS X is just changing something small in the file about how it reads it. Is there a way I could alter this directly on the dell server without having to transfer all my files in the way described above?
    Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Looks like I may have fixed my own problem. FCP never used to put an mov extension on any of it's captured files. Simply putting it on seems to have fixed the problem. Still really doesn't explain why the previous method worked, but it's a lot easier making an automator action to put extensions on than transferring terabytes of data.

  • T.V. Station and FCP bin export = native QT file?

I've got a few hundred short (15-20 second) bloopers on DVC-Pro that a local T.V. Station will be re-digitizing for me - into uncompressed QT - for me to work with at home.
I didn't want to have to throw ALL these clips into a time line just to have to export -each one- into an uncompressed QT movie.
The Tech said that we could export - right from the bins (after digitizing) and that the clips would all be in a NATIVE? QT format. I explained that my editing programs at home - are running QT 6.5 - and asked him if it would it accept this format . . . he said yes ???
Question: Is this correct? Can we export straight from the bin, and is this media type a QT file I will be able to open, or is it a FCP media type?????
I have to add a Title, and a Logo to each clip before I can display them on the internet - and since all of the programs I purchased (AE, etc.) are Mac OS 9 -
am I screwed - and have to purchase $1,000 new A.E. to be able to work with them?
I do own a new Mac Min, with Leopard - so I have the computer ability - but would just like to be able to use the clips - with the programs and OS that is currently working well.
Really appreciate any help or knowledge that you could share.
    Thank you

I understand how to get them into their system now . .
Luke, I am glad that you understand because my head is spinning just trying to figure out what you want to do. How are you going to get them into their system? What program are they going to use?
There isn't going to be a problem if they export to a QT file - IS THERE?
I mean QT is QT weather made on windows or Mac - right????
Well there may be. Like I said earlier QT is just a wrapper, the codec is what you have to be concerned with. You keep throwing around the term uncompressed, but I don't think that you know what you mean by that. Uncompressed is for working with an analog format like Digibeta. DVCPro is a digital format that can be easily captured in its native form. In FCP you do this by setting your capture settings to DV/DVCPro. But you haven't said what they will use to capture this footage so it's hard to say if it will work.
I wish one of you guys knew a cool trick to get them to export as a 6.5 edition of QT - but they're currently at 7. something
Third time, being a QT file is not the issue, versions have nothing to do with it. Codec is king. I can export a QT file from FCP in 100 different ways and only a few of them can be transferred to another computer (w/o FCP on it) and play. You must know what codec you need them saved as. Think of QT as the foil wrapper on the candy bar. If you have 3 different candy bars and they all have gold foil wrappers are they the same, or is one milk chocolate, one dark chocolate and one with almonds? Yet they all look the same.
    Luke, here is your homework.
    1. Find out what the TV station is going to use to capture the tapes.
    2. Use Google and wikipedia to learn about codecs.
    3. Post your complete system specs, drives, and software versions.
Only after you do this can we help. (and even then I am thinking that it is hopeless.)
    Good Luck.

  • What is the best seeting to export as smaller file size AVI from FCP?

Hi, I know the topic sounds very similar to many of AVI post it had been up, however, somehow, I do not find the right answer that I'm looking for.
I have a couple animation created from QT as "image sequence".
I simply want to export as avi file.
Here is the question I have.
    1. If I choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, and choose scan mode as Progressive, I get interlacing looking quality video.
    2. If I choose compressor type as "NONE" then even I set as "least" quality, the file size will be over 1G..although, that's the quality I'm trying to archive.
Is there any other setting I can choose to get good quality with lower file size avi? I have seen or download avi file on the net with very good quality and still download-able file size...

What is the QT method? (Export from QT Player?)
Yes, 10 hour plus is ridiculous. I'm guessing that there was either something wrong with your Internet connection and/or at the You Tube end of the uploasd/compression process.
Innocentius and Hugh are right; using Compressor (or MPEG Streamclip) and using YT's  uploader is the most reliable workflow.(Since Google changed the account verification process, there have been reports of upload problems using Share>You Tube.)  In addition, you have more control over the quality of your movie. You can create multiple custom settings in Compressor and then Share > Compressor custom settings. It will go faster if you export out of FCP as a Pro Res 422 file; should take 3-4 minutes top. The Web encode for a 3 minute video in Compressor might take 15 minutes, depending on your system. MPEG Streamclip is probably a little faster.

  • How ro export small (compressed) files (.mpg) with sound from FCP or compr.

I have some dv pal footage that I need to store in in very small files. Then I need to convert it back to dv, for editing.
The quality (regarding artefacts and all that) is not important. The stuff was ripped from DVDs originally and are only to be used as reference.
Can I export an .mpg file with sound muxed into it from FCP or Compressor?
    H.264 produces to big files.
    Thanks for any replyes:)

    Hm, what a weird workflow.
I presume you are trying to edit with this stuff in FCP, so my question is, If you are grabbing media off DVDs, and converting with MPEG Streamclip or some such thing, and then trying to down-rez to edit with proxy footage, how do you plan to use timecode to reconnect to the high-res media when your cut is done?
h.264 can produce to big files or small files, depending on the settings of the file you tell it to produce to.
Consider that the amount of time you would spend converting media back and forth to low-res formats of lousy quality could be much more valuable than the cost of a firewire drive which you could use to convert your DVDs directly to DV, which you will find much easier to work with.
Hope this is helpful to U

  • FCP Project File & other Editing programs

G'day, I apologise if this has been brought up earlier but this is a question I've had for a while.
FCP projects obviously maintain the file extension .fcp for the file projects.
My question is can FCP open, use and edit other file projects such as those from Windows Movie Maker or Vegas which have extensions .wmm and .veg respectively?
And can those other editing programs such as Vegas open and operate FCP project files?
I'm currently operating from a university computer with the latest FCP software (FCP5) available.
    All answers are greatly appreciated.
Final Cut Pro 5   Other OS
      Other OS

I've never tried, but I'm 99% sure you cannot simply open a project file from another program, and have FCP read it, and vice versa. Such things are not common practice among most applications (as it would require Apple licensing proprietary technology to competitors).
There are however, ways to do this. There is a plugin for Final Cut called Automatic Duck that provides import options between pro apps like FCP, Avid, After Effects, Combustion, etc. However, its not free, and would most likey not support an app like Vegas, and certainly not Windows Movie Maker.
The other way to do it is to utilize an Edit Decision List (EDL), which is a textual summary of all your edits and sequences in the project, and importing this along with your clips may allow another program to rebuild your project. I've never really needed to use one before, but I know FCP is capable of importing and exporting them (I would assume it uses XML). I have no idea how well EDLs are supported in Vegas, and I would assume that there is no support for them in WMM.
    Good Luck

  • FCP Movie File or Mov-file

    Hi,
I have a 11 minute long video which is 8.97GB as a FCP Movie File. When exported to a Mov-file it is only 2.64GB.
How much quality did I loose doing this? How could I get the FCP Movie File on a dvd? Zipping doesn´t shrink it enough. Are there other ways, because I would like to back up and store the best quality version on a dvd.
    Thanks,
    J

If your project footage was all captured with timecode, then there is no real need to save the footage, just make sure you keep the tapes. If you ever need to revisit the project simply re-capture all the footage.
The thing you need to archive are the project files and any non TC material you may have used (music, titles, stills, captures from non tc tapes etc)
If you really want to archive the captured footage to a DVD then you'll have to just drag what ever clips will fit to a dvd and burn until you've got them all.
Exporting your timeline as a file to burn to DVD only gives you the footage in the timeline, so you're options for reediting it are severely limited. And the big problem again is compression if you have to "make it fit"
In that case you'd be better off simply outputting your timeline to a DV tape and saving that. At least you'll have no loss in quality. (assuming you're working in DV to begin with)

  • Capture files split

When I capture a file larger than 2GB, FCP splits the file in two files with -v and -v-1 after them. In system settings, I've checked the box "Limit Capture/Export File Segment to: 10000MB" which should allow capture for a file up to 10GB. (The box was previously unchecked, but FCP was still splitting the capture files.) Anyone experience this problem?

Your media drive is formatted as FAT32. One of the limitations of FAT is that individual files can't be larger than 2 GB.
Reformat your media drive as HFS+ and you'll be good to go.

  • Sequence, Export, and Capture presets

Could someone explain to me the relationship (if any) of the Sequence presets to the Export presets. It seems to me that the sequence presets have to do with what I see on the computer, and the export presets are what the output is to be. And how does the captured material relate.
    Thanks
    Michael

The sequence is the internal codec FCP will use when editing.
If the captured file is the same codec as the sequence, FCP will be able to play the material on the timeline without rendering simple cuts. It will also have more real time effects available.
The export codec simply translates the internal codec of the sequence to the deliverable format of the output. Issues of frame proportion, frame rate and compression come into play here. If the sequence, captured file and export codecs are all the same, you have a very slick editing path. A major exception to this is HDV. It is an ugly kluge.
The manual is very well written and is a wonderful place to start reading about this relationship.

  • Unable to capture files into external hard disk because of 'drop frames '

I haven't been able to capture footage from my DV camcoder thru firewire to an external hard disk in FCP because i get a message saying 'drop frames were detected'.
This happens when i selected this external hard drive as the scratch disk in FCP.
When i deslect it and select my user hard disk as the scratch disk, the capturing works perfectly. But i just want to capture all my capture files into the external hard disk, not my user hard disk.
The external hard disk's speed is 3500 - could that be the problem? Is it too slow? Its connected thru USB and it is Mac Os Extended Journaled. Its got 250gb of space, so that's not the issue.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thank you.

No, its a Panasonic gs180, a really good camera.
The camera itself is connected to my computer through firewire. Its the hard disk enclosure that is connected to my emac through USB. Anyway, i'm sure that's not the problem, casue like i said, the capturing works fine when i use my user hard disk as the FCP scratch disk.
The problem i have is when i try to capture footage from my camera to the external hard disk enclosure. When i press 'capture now' and press play, the playback stutters and a messsage appears saying, "drop frames detected" and the capturing stops.
I feel like i need to adjust something in FCP itself - like a preference or something - just not sure what.
Thnx for your suggestion though and if you know what i should do, please let me know.

  • How do I export detached audio files as separate files, for Pro Tools processing?

My project is a live band performance. I have every song as a separate Event with associated audio. I have detachd all the audio from all the video Events. I now want to Export the audio files to Pro Tools for editing, then Import the edited audio back into FCP X and snap the edited audio to the associated video Events.
My problem is this: FCP X keeps exporting the audio as a single large WAV file, rather than as separate WAV files. In fact, the video events are separate, and so the audio associated with the video Events are separate.
I first renamed the Role of every audio file as "Music", then did a Share --> Export Media of all "Music" audio Roles. After exporting, I found it was one large WAV file, rather than separate files of different sizes.
As a 2nd try, I created Sub-Roles for each audio clip, and named each one with a distinct Sub-Role name. I then Exported all these Sub-Roles (yes, tedious). The result was that every exported WAV file was the same size, the same as the file size in my first try. The only audio that could be heard in each file was the audio in that particular song, but FCP X still created the very large file with silence in all the rest of the file. Since the file lengths don't match the original audio fil lengths, there will be a problem when I Import the edited files back into FCP X and want to Snap them into place.
    Question:
How can I export the individual detached audio clips as separate files, the length of each file equaling the length of the original audio file in FCP X?
Do I need to separate the detached audio into separate Layers visually in the Project Timeline, so they are not touching? Or does this matter?

    No.
You need to explore Compound Clips. This workflow may or may not be of help.
Select an Event with clips in it and press Option+G to make a (blank) compound clip.
Select the Event Browser, create a new Event and call it 'Effects'.
Drag the Compound Clip into this Event.
Right-click the clip and select 'Open in Timeline'.
Select the timeline and press Option+W. This will add a Gap Clip to the timeline.
Select the gap clip and press Ctrl+D then type in the duration you want the clip to be.
Now open a project and select and copy one of the clips with effects etc.
Open the Compound Clip in the Timeline again, select the gap clip and press Option+Cmd+V to paste the effects into your Compound Clip.
This clip is now saved in your Browser and will remain there for you to copy and then paste the effects into any clip in any project.
It's a bit clunky, but it works - and once you learn about Compound Clips, you can work wonders with them. As an example, if you want to add more effects without overwriting the effects in the Compound Clip, simply make the Compound Clip into a Compound Clip (again) and add the effects. They will be added to the original effects.

  • Best practice for exporting a .mov file for YouTube

I am using FCPX 10.0.9 with a MacBook Pro. We are needing to upload relatively small-size high school football videos as .mov files to YouTube for my newspaper. I have been choosing the Export File option with the setting set to h.264, exporting the file to the desktop and then uploading that .mov file to YouTube. (I do not have Compressor installed on this Mac.) The other night the first of three files done like this uploaded fine, but the next two just kept processing and processing at YouTube and never finished. The following morning the files processed fine. Any thoughts about why ths might be happening?
And would it be better to export in another file format --.mp4 files -- instead that might cause less of a problem and which of the export options would be best?
    Thanks,
    Douglas

    douglas i wrote:
Am I correctly uploading a .mov file to YouTube by using the Export File command with the export setting set to .h264 then if I wish a reasonable size file for upload?
Sure. There are many ways to get videos to YT and yours is a reasonable approach.
"Reasonable size" should be thought of in terms of upload time. Again, YT will re-compress whatever you give it. So depending on how quickly you need to get it up on the Web, it's better to upload files that have more information than less information. (To that end, some folks upload very large Pro Res files; they also have a lot of patience.)
Just to let you know, the majority of FCPX users follow one of two workflows:
    1) Share>You Tube option and have FCP handle the uploading;
    2) Export as a Pro Res Master File; bring the master file into Compressor and apply the user's custom settings; upload using YT's uploader.
FWIW, I prefer the second workflow.
