Exporting File now takes forever

Is it since the upgrade to FC X 10.0.7 that the exports take ages to do?  I have a 2.8 Gb movie using 466 compression and it takes an hour to transpher to desktop.
Also, on topic:
What is the best format or way to export to a jump drive, to send someone a movie so that they can use whatever compression they want and I don't have to wait ages to export?
Thanks, Gary

I do not see below Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.
Also, when playing to an audience with laptop to projector I hear that a DVD is not the best quality but that Apple devices 720p is the way to go.  True?
1:  Select File->Share->Apple Devices 720p
2:  Click Tab "Settings"
3:  Switch "Video codec" pull down to "H.264 Better Quality"

It's because the PowerMac G5 had HUGE bandwidth with a fat BUS on each processsor so they could run hard, hot and heavy.
It's not so with the Intel processors which are multi-core and share a common bus thus bottleneck.
The newer Intel processors can do more work on the CPU, but when it comes to in/out they are s-l-o-w.
I've had a wickedly fast dual processor (not dual core) G5, RAID 0 pair of 10,000 RPM drives as boot and a fast video card, I could do a lot very very fast.
You'll likely have to upgrade to Final Cut X to get more cores utilized, prepare to cry a little bit, Apple is working on the features they stripped out of it to make amends to pro users who complained loudly. (all over TV too)

  • I was having problems with my Adobe Flash plugin crashing occasionally during my game playing on Facebook. After researching it on the Firefox Help site, I upgraded. It now takes forever to load, if at all, and loses the connection. What gives?

The game eventually loads but now takes forever. If I switch to a different section of the game, it also is slow. It wasn't before I upgraded to the "new, improved" version. I was better off with the old Adobe plugin and putting up with the occasional crashing.

  • Why does exporting to m4v take forever?

I've done a lot of QuickTime exporting and converting in my time and I just got a video iPod and would like to put a few videos on it but I can't for the life of me figure out why exporting to m4v takes so darned long. Anyone know? Exporting to huge file formats like .dv and such only take a minute or two, but my 20 meg .mov file takes almost an hour to convert to .m4v
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

It explains a lot about how compression to H.264 works.
Also, look at it like this. If I asked you to pack an average sized dorm room into a dump truck, no sweat, just toss everything over the side and you're done. However, if you had to do the same thing with a Toyota Celica, it'd take you longer because you've got to make the best use of all the space, including under the seat and around the tire well.
QuickTime is also doing 2-passes over your media. After reading the above article, you'll see why this is a good thing. Since QuickTime doesn't allow you to choose a bitrate, I also figure that it's fitting your media as close to 768 kbps as possible and this would take some finagling too.
There ARE tools that are faster than QuickTime, but it seems that as speed increases, so does file size and file size directly affects battery life.

  • Reboot after IOS 4.1 now takes forever

Ever since updating my iPhone 4 on Wednesday, my phone now takes 2-3 min. to reboot after turning it off. Anyone else seeing this happening with theirs? I'm going to take mine to my AT&T store today to see if they know why this is happening and why I haven't been able to access the data network since the update either.

Yup. This is a known issue but it's not known to that many since most of the customers get all their content straight from iTunes. There's only ONE way to get the non-iTunes HD MP4s to play. When you are staring at the blank screen, waiting for the video to buffer (which for the majority of the time, will never happen), press Down on the controller to pull up the timeline with chapter marks. Now, press Forward to skip chapters. With the original 4.1 update, you can skip all the way to the end of the last chapter, give it a few seconds, and then skip all the way back to the beginning of the first chapter (same chapter timeline, but you press Back until it goes to the start of the first chapter). With the recent 4.1.1 update, it's a little trickier. When you skip all the way to the end of the last chapter, if you don't immediately skip back, it will take you back to your videos list because it registers as you having finished watching the video. Now, keep in mind all of this takes places on the timeline with the CHAPTER MARKS.
Second thing, be sure you have chapter marks set on the MP4 file or else the chapter skip workaround will not work (since there's no chapters). You can most probably use any metadata utility you wish to set the chapter marks but I personally am using iSubtitler. I also set the chapter marks for every 10 minutes.
I don't know exactly what has changed since the original 4.0 firmware on the ATV but it has messed up the buffering for large HD non-iTunes purchased videos.

  • IPod Touch 1G sync now takes FOREVER

Ever since I upgraded to 3.0, my iPod Touch takes FOREVER to sync to iTunes when I plug it in to my computer. Today I plugged it in to get the latest upgrade, and it's been synching for over an hour. Anyone have a similar problem or know how to fix it?
p.s. the 3.0 upgrade broke my iPod, so it has been completely restored since then as well.

    See:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • IMovie export to iDVD takes FOREVER

Hey kids - need your help.
I've been digitizing home movies from a Sony Camcorder using the XtraView USB for Mac hardware. This produces a (massive) .mov file. I imported this file into iMovie 09 as an event, edited it, put in transitions, etc. I selected Share>iDVD and it exported to iDVD in a reasonable amount of time. In iDVD I tweaked Chapter menus, etc., and burned to disk. No problem.
    Now here comes the issue...
Playing the disk back, I realize that I have a really bad interlacing issue. The XtraView HW/SW didn't give me an option to deinterlace, so I'm not terribly surprised, but it's bad enough to not be acceptable. Again, no worries, I used Handbrake to convert the movie to MP4 and deinterlace it along the way. The result was a much smaller, very nice, smooth-playing .mp4 (m4v) file.
When I import this file into iMovie, I can work with it, but the performance is terribly degraded. Not unusable, but noticeably slower. Now, when I've added my chapter markers, transitions, etc. and export to iDVD, it takes 19 HOURS to "Prepare content" and create movie.
I can only assume that this is an issue with the now H.264 file I used.
    So my questions are:
    - is there a better way to deinterlace the video?
    - is there a different format I should be using for the movie file (e.g., FFMPEG?)
Thanks in advance for any help - this previously fun project has gotten incredibly frustrating.
    - Roger

OK, I have a bit more data, and some success!
Using Handbrake I converted the original mov files to mpeg-4 files using the ffmpeg codec rather than the H.264, then imported them as events in iMovie. This time they imported quickly, were responsive when edited, and shared to iDVD quickly, completing in under an hour.
So it would seem that it is the H.264 format that does not play well with iMovie. Still curious if anyone has any suggestions/explanations as to why that may be, but at least for now the problem is resolved.

  • Export to Quicktime takes forever

I have a fairly simple slideshow - no video, some basic transitions and builds. There are nine slides, each one minute long (nine minutes total). It takes probably 30 minutes or so to export to Quicktime in full quality. Is this normal, or do I have settings incorrect?

    Thinking out loud sort of:
Maybe the problem is that you're using GOP structured media, and because of this, the GOP has to be remade because you've edited in not iframes... I can recall just how long it took to create DVD's from HDV on G5 machines... YIKES it was slow. Might be a related problem. Dual only intel machines are a bit faster, but not by much... if your on a Powerbook or iMac.. you're on a dual intel most likely?
Seems to me that if the media was captured to an i frame format (ProRes) you'd not have this long export time for a reference movie.
I just edited a 3 camera shoot recorded with 3 HDV cameras last night as it turns out... but I captured it as ProRes using a Macbook Pro. The cameras never stopped so syncing them was pretty easy.
Larger files, but the switched 45 minute sequence exported as a reference movie in about 2 minutes.
HDV isn't my favorite codec to edit with, so I never work in it natively... It's just a totally inefficient codec and was never really intended to be a professional format I'm afraid (see Sony's original press release when they introduced it to the world, they point blank stated it was for consumers and home movies...) your problem is likely that it's HDV material. Sooooo don't work in HDV in post.

  • Sequence file load takes forever

When I select TEST UUT, the test exec seems (to the operator) to be doing nothing.  I'll probably have to display an hourglass (different discussion forum) to give some type of indication of life.  What exactly is TestStand doing that takes so long (upto 25s) before starting the first test?  Is the hourglass the best solution, or is there a sequence file (pre/post validation) setting that I should check to improve performance.

    Hi,
This is not normal behaviour. You need to track down where the delay is.
Is it in the Process Model or your SequenceFile?
Have you got search paths that are network paths or are they all local.?
Check your Search Directories. If you have network paths and you dont need them, then delete or disable them.

  • Opening now takes forever

I was doing some stabilizing and now iMovie is taking several min to open each time each time I open it.
It seems to be taking time to load all clips back to 2007 and is identifying the frame rate for each old clip (30)
Is there someway to stop this long introduction?
    Thank you

If you have to do this, perhaps you should visit the apple store. Its not normal, its not supposed to help, and you are not supposed to have to do this. Given the number of people reporting sim not registered problems after a reboot i'd be a little leery of doing this dail
My phone takes a 5 count (1001, 1002, 1003...) to show anything on the settings screen after I select it from the main screen. Does this if I reboot the phone or not.

I started a new project with Arri Amira footage, Premier Pro CC 2014 (not latest update) and it created a huge file of just under 500 mb. granted it has about 2000 clips and the LUT is being added automatically, and the footage is 4k 4444, but still i dont think the project should be so big, no?

  • Export Reference Movie takes forever!

XDCAM EX project that is only 17 minutes long is taking 3 hrs to export a reference movie. Why? I've rendered everything in the sequence but it still seems like it needs to re-render everything in order to export a simple reference movie and sometimes it crashes during export and I get nothing after waiting for three hrs...

You can't export a "reference" movie in a different codec Eli, that will trigger a full re-render to a self contained movie. As Tom has pointed out the renders in your "rendered" timeline previously only contained that footage which FCP needed to render for full quality playback, but due to the nature of XDCAM HD/EX's MPEG2 codec, even that footage which can be played back without render needs to be rendered for export, even as a reference movie. The only way round this is to set your Sequence menu > Render options to also render "Full". Then, if and when your sequence is fully rendered, the reference movie export will be fast.

  • Background File Activity takes forever

I just purchased and installed CS6 (physical media) on my new Windows 7 (64bit) pc.   I believe there was one update. For smaller sites, ftp works as it did in CS3 (on different pc with XP Pro).   I have another site that has a lot of folders/files and seems like I can't even click on the 'Test' button and it connect.   I know it works because in my cs3 version it works fine.
Is it possible I can't import settings from cs3?   Are their known ftp issues?
    Thanks.

Seems to be some confusion with the update numbering and build number provided by Adobe.
    The Adobe blog http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2012/07/dreamweaver-cs6-update-12-0-1.html
says 12.0.1 is Build 5842 - which you already have.
However, DW 12.0.1 reports via Help > About that version 12.0 is installed.
The build number is the only way to be sure that you have the updater correctly installed - which you do.
