Exporting Final Cut Express Documents

Yes...I was wondering is there any way to export a final cut express document (movie) to an external device (such as a camcorder via firewire), other than just burning it to a DVD (through IDVD or such) for viewing?
-Thanks

Yes, you can either use Print to Video or just play the timeline while a camera is connected via FW. Just make sure View is set to direct video out to FW.

  • What setting is the best for exporting Final Cut Express HD

I am new to final cut express HD. I have worked with iMovie and it was very easy to work with and exporting the movie was not too difficult.
I am curious as to what setting should I set to to export a movie file from final cut express HD. I've exported a short quicktime movie clip but it doesn't look as sharp. Could someone help me.

For DVD, export as Quicktime Movie NOT Quicktime Conversion.
You can drop the resulting QT file into iDVD or into Compressor if you are using DVD Studio Pro.
If you have chapter markers, make sure to select Chapter Markers in the export submenu.
Bear in mind that iDVD has a limitation of two hours; even if your movie is exactly two hours you will run into probs cause iDVD counts its menus, themes etc as part of that total running time.

  • Can you export FInal Cut express project to IDVD?

I am currently using IMOVIE and IDVD. I am considering purchasing Final Cut Express. Someone told me that you cannot export a completed Final Cut Express File to IDVD. Is this correct. Would I have to invest in DVD Studio?
    Thanks,
    Benjamin

Completely untrue. Some people seem to have issues
with chapter markers not importing correctly on
occasions, but otherwise it works fine
Can anyone comment on this problem and the solution? I just upgraded to FCX HD and iDVD 5.0, and I can no longer put chapters in my movies. Worked just fine under FCX 2.0 and iDVD 4.

  • I can't export Final Cut Express HD movie to QT

I do realize the error of my ways. I installed an old copy of FCE HD onto my MBP with Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I really wish I knew SL only supports FCE4 before I edited a 2-hour movie.
I've seen discussion on this forum about installing Quicktime 7 from the SL install disk. So I installed QT 7. It is in the Utilities folder.
I rendered the video via Render All > Both and Render Only > Mixdown
I ran Disk Utility and Repaired Permissions
I exported via Export> Quicktime Movie> Include: Audio and Video, Markers: None, "Make Movie Self-Contained" not checked.
The time remaining box appears and counts down the estimated minutes remaining and the % complete. It gets all the way to 100% complete and hangs there.
Is there something I need to do with Quicktime or FCE to make sure it is using QT7 and not QTX? Is there some other error in my workflow?
    Thx in advance,
    Ed

I created a little workaround that may be specific to me. I have a copy of Final Cut Pro HD on my wife's iBook running 10.5. From the iBook, I logged into my MBP over my network. I then opened the project in FCP and was able to do an export. Once exported I moved the QT file back to the MBP where it played fine this morning. Unfortunately, I made a couple minor adjustments and now when I open the file it says a couple render files are missing. I'll search for an answer to that problem.
    Thanks Al

  • Exporting Final Cut Express 4 HD Video to Standard Definition?

I have created a commercial set to air on a Local TV Station. They are not accepting HD Commercials.
How do I export to QuickTime making sure my graphics are in the Standard Definition Safe Area?

    Tom,
You are correct I need Standard Definition. Is there a way I can set the Resolution of the Screen or the way i output my video so when I send it to the News Stations my Commercials are in standard Definition?
720x480 or some programs require 720x486 is what i need 4:3
I was a little confused with what you told me. Do I need to just scale down my box to 60% and 20% from the top and bottom, 60% from the left and right edges. or just one or the other?
As it stands now they are having to box it in at the station and I would rather do everything on my end so when they get it, all they do is play it as it.

  • Final Cut Express Documents Folder

    Hello,
I am trying to clean up my macbook pro to make room for a large video project.
I have located a folder that contains these subfolders,( "Render files" "audio render files" "auto save vault" "capture scratch" "thumbnail cache files" "waveform cache files").
I understand that these files are linked to videos...but can I:
1: Delete anything that is unnecessary or will not affect anything.
2: Move the files to an external drive? then possibly "locate" them?
    Thank you

    Hi
    a. The external hard disk has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will NOT work !
    b. Should be a FireWire hard disk
    c. There is more to this than what is obvious.
    • On an external hard disk I have a folder where all scratch is directed too
    • And the FinalCut document eg Untitled 1 (or what the movie is named as)
When opening this project on my Power Mac - all is OK
When opening same on my PowerBook G4 - lot's is missing eg last edits made om PowerMac
Can't figur out why this happens - and what part that differs
Just to mentioning - an iMovie HD6 project is assembled in a way that makes it
possibly to work on on different work-stations so it is easy to make a group/team
project where one put's in a part each. (as long as same version of iM is used
as 6.0.3 on all Macs and same QT version)
I wish this was equally easy in FinalCut E/P - but I can't make this 100% secure.
Yours out in the dark Bengt W

  • Final Cut Express moving videos off hard drive

So I started capturing some footage on my laptop because I didn't have an external drive available. I finished the project, and now I'm back home with my external drive. My internal drive had 1.5 gigs free now, and I want to move all the footage I captured from FCE onto the external.
I know iMovie has an option to export the project and all the files into a single file. Does FCE have an option like this, or do I need to go through finder to where it saved all the footage and move them like that? How can I do this without losing all the links and having to reconnect my media...
hopefully this all makes sense, I've never really used FCE

    Hello Drew,
FCE doesn't have that option. You will have to use the Finder to copy the folders/files to your external drive and yes you will have to Reconnect Media after moving the files.
Be sure your external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended and is connected via Firewire.
In FCE, close your Project. Then in FCE preferences reset your scratch disk location to the new Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive. Then exit FCE.
The default FCE scratch disk location is /Users/yourusername/Final Cut Express Documents. Normally your FCE project file and related material is in this folder. Under it you will find the following folders:
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Render Files
    Waveform Cache
    Thumbnail Cache
and there may be an Audio Render Files folder too
At this point you should be able to find a Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive; it should have automatically been created when you reset your FCE preferences earlier, along with an Autosave Vault and a Capture Scratch folder. Copy the files from your internal drive's Autosave Vault and Capture Scratch folders to the corresponding new folders on your external drive. Don't bother copying the render files or cache files - it will be better to re-render after you move your project. Also, if you have any other source media such as photos or music, copy them to a new folder on your external drive. Keep your FCE project file on your internal hard drive but do make a backup copy of it somewhere.
After copying everything, verify & double check that you have good copies of your clips on your external drive because the next step is to delete the originals of your captured clips that are on your internal drive. Don't delete any folders, just the captured clips themselves ... and all the render files. This is necessary so that when you reopen your FCE project it will be forced to reconnect media and you can point it to the new location on your external drive. Otherwise it will just continue to use the clips that are on your internal drive.
Then reopen your Project File that you left on your internal drive and reconnect media when prompted.

  • Final Cut Express Render Files

    Hello all.
Just wondering what files are okay to delete in User > Documents > Final Cut Express Documents
I already have deleted most of the files inside of the folders, such as the render files, because I've already exported them as quicktime movies. But just before, after deleting various things, (such as audio renders, auto-saves, renders,) when I next opened up final cut express, it asked for my licensing details.
Did I do something wrong, and delete something I wasn't supposed to????
    Thanks in advanced.

You can delete anything you want from the FCE Documents folder, but if you delete Capture Scratch files then any projects with those in them will be useless. Nothing in the FCE Documents folder would make it reset your licensing details.
However, if you accidentally deleted this file, FCE would again prompt you for your serial number and such:

  • Final Cut Express Project space problem

I have just finished my first real project in Final Cut Express HD. It has created a Capture Scratch folder of 54 GB. Included in this 54GB is the footage that I used to complete the project which are captured as QuickTime movies. Also included are the render files.
The FCE project itself is saved in my Movie folder and that is 17GB. I created a Quicktime Movie and that is an additional 17GB (the same as the project)
In addition to the above I had to import the Quicktime Movie into IDVD and that IDVD file is 13GB.
All of this is taking up a lot of space on my Power MAC G5. I only have 11 GB available.
I have an external LaCie drive that has 91 GB available. The question is What can I transfer to the LaCie drive and still keep the project intact. I do not want to have to start this project all over again.
    Please help!

    Hi Kennbu,
The minimum you need to keep includes 1) your FCE Project File (which is in your Final Cut Express Documents folder, not your Movies folder), 2) the clips in Capture Scratch that you captured from your camera, and 3) any other media files (photos, sound, etc) that you imported into your FCE project. You do not need to keep any of the render files or output files unless you have other reasons to keep them.
Your FCE Project File cannot be 17GB; I suspect you are calling your exported movie your project file. The FCE Project File only contains the instructions for the things you did when you edited your project in FCE and it should be a relatively small file, usually under 1MB. It does not contain any actual video; that's what your original footage clips and/or render files in Capture Scratch contain.
When you export your project, FCE reads the instructions in the Project File, applies the instructions to your video & audio files and then creates an output file. I suspect you did this twice and that is why you have two 17GB QT files in your Movies folder.
In the future, one way to save space on your HD is export your FCE movie as a reference movie not as a self-contained movie. When you export, if you leave the "Make movie self contained" option checked, FCE copies all your video into the exported file; it takes a lot of time and uses disk space at the rate of ~13GB per hour of video. If you uncheck this option FCE makes what is called a reference movie that is very small and very fast; it usually only takes seconds to export a reference movie. You can import reverence movies into iDVD just the same as a self-contained movie as long as you are on the same machine that has your captured clips & other media files.

  • Final Cut Express not opening, error says final FCE disks are missing.

    Hi there,
Recently I got a WD Fire Wire 800 Hard drive for christmas so I could move all of my final cut projects over to the HD.
When I moved my final cut express documents including all of the folders it now says this error.
    To preserve the integrity of the data used by final cut express, it is necessary to ensure the existence of the following paths;
    - My HDD Chris is missing
Then it gives me the option to reset scratch disks, check again or quit.
So I'm not sure what I do.
Should I simply move back all the folders and documents that I moved to my hard drive (btw I tried this but it still gave the same error message). I have deleted final cut express 4.1 and re installed 4.0 to see if it works but it didn't and has the same error message.
    Any tips would be helpful.
    Chees, Chris.

I can't even open FCE any more because I have moved everything onto the external hard drive including software 'everything'.
You moved the software? You can't do that. That's fatal. The software must be on the system drive as it requires system resources. Move the application called Final Cut Express back into the top level of the Applications folder. Do it move it, rename it, or put it inside a folder.
Do not assign the scratch disk to a folder anywhere. If you want the scratch disk to be on your external drive select the top level of the external drive. FCE will create the folders it needs in that location.
    Hi,
When you say move the application final cut express into the application folder.
Do you mean move my folder of final cut express that I moved onto my HDD?
If so it's copying the 20GB folder as I speak. Hopefully fixes this frustrating problem..
    Cheers, Chris.

  • How do I delete tabs in Final Cut Express?

Final Cut Express 4:  I know I can't delete whole projects; what I'm worried about is doing a bunch of short projects and having the tabs that show the titles of each project become so many I can't even use the program.  If I do 5 short videos and have 5 tabs designating them, what happens when I get to 20?  Or are they temporary files and will disappear soon?  Thanx in advance.

You can delete entire projects, but it isn't a 'one button' method.  When you start and save a new project in FCE, FCE will create several files and folders.  First is the project file which will be saved wherever you decided to save it with the name you give it.  Next, when you bring footage into a project using Log & Capture or Log & Transfer, FCE will create a folder for those files inside the Capture/Scratch folder - the sub-folder will bear the same name as the project.  And then when you render anything in that project, FCE will create a sub-folder inside the Render Files folder and the Audio Render Files folder - both will also bear the same name as the project.  FCE will also create folders for that project in the Autosave Vault folder.  To delete a project completely, navigate those files/folders and delete them and your project will no longer exist, nor will any media or renders associated with it.
    Here's a typical set up:
    Macintosh HD/
         Users/
              Projects/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Project
                   Smith Documentary
    Media Drive/
         Final Cut Express Documents/
               Audio Renders/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Autosave Vault/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Capture Scratch/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
              Render Files/
                   ABC Music Video
                   Jones Demo
                   Smith Documentary
To delete the project named "Jones Demo" navigate to where those files are stored and delete the folders named "Jones Demo" then empty the trash; the project and all of its associated media will be gone.  The only files that FCE might create for that project that are not stored inside a folder bearing the project's name are the Waveform Cache files - I usually delete the contents of that folder when ever I'm finished with a project.
Personally, I keep all of my project files just in case I ever need to go back to a project.  Project files are relatively small so hard drive space isn't really an issue.
As for the issue of having too many projects open at one time, that's a simple user error.  All you need to do before opening a new or another existing project is to close the project you were working on.  So if I were working on the "ABC Music Video" project and wanted to work on the "Smith Documentary" project for a while, I'd close the "ABC Music Video" Project, then open the "Smith Documentary" project.

  • Final Cut Express scratch disk not found.

I launch up final cut express and then it says "one or more scratch disks couldn't not be accesed." and it siad that it was the final cut express documents folder so I went on that and put all the permissions on read and write but it still said the same thing. Then it said it's location was the trash but nothing was in the trash so now I am very confused.

Your Default Scratch Disc setting is Macintosh HD>Users>Home>Documents>Final Cut Express Documents.
This is where all stuff goes unless you change your FCE>System Settings>Scratch Disc Tab.
Open the FCE System Settings>Scratch Disc, the top line, with the check marks, are where current captures go to.
If you decide to rename clips etc. do so within the FCE application and not through the Finder as the later will loose the links and FCE will have to re-connect.
If you right click a clip in the Browser or Timeline you will see the Reveal in Finder option, this will show you the file path to where the clip is located on your system.
If you see a red slash through the name, it's Offline and the path has somehow been broken. Reconnect it.

  • Render files end up inside Final Cut Express package

With all of the discussion here about rendering, I thought I'd let folks know that that 'ol bug that plagued Final Cut Pro for so long (and perhaps still does) is present in Final Cut Express 4.0.1 too: render files sometimes end up inside the package for Final Cut Express. I know this because I just experienced it while running FCE 4.0.1.
With Final Cut Express not running, control-click or right-click on the Final Cut Express application file, then choose "Show Package Contents". After that, open the folder, "Contents", then the folder, "MacOS", and inside, you may see a folder for video render files, one for audio render files, or both.
Assuming that you don't want to render to that location, then with FCE still quit, move any render folders (that you found inside of the package) elsewhere; and delete the four preference files for FCE, according to the instructions given in Tom Wolsky's on-line guide:
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
Then start-up Final Cut Express and open System Settings. Once there, choose your scratch location(s): usually /Users/<username>/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents, if you are rendering to your boot drive. (If rendering elsewhere, simply specify a folder at that location.)
Next, move the render files from the package (that are now residing elsewhere) into the respective folders inside /Users/<username>/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents, if in fact you find their respective folders there and wish to use that as a scratch location. If not, or if you have specified a location on another drive, of if you want maximum integrity of your render files, then simply open your project file and re-render everything. But you might want to stop that process just a few seconds after starting it, then check inside your scratch folders to make sure that new render files are now being stored there. After verifying that, you can go back to your project file and resume re-rendering.
This issue may answer the question, "where are my render files". By the way, if you do a "Get Info" on the Final Cut Express application file and "Get Info" reports that that file is huge (say, several gigabytes in size), then it is likely that your render files are being stored inside.
Please excuse this post if the subject matter has already been discussed in this forum.

Eidschun, thank you for this thread. It doesn't matter how often it occurs, this information works on many levels and was a pleasure to read.

  • Final Cut Express Won't Open - Help!

Hi, I had been using Final Cut Express successfully for the past six months... until ast week, when I (too hastily) deleted the contents of the Final Cut Express Documents folder to clear up space. Since then, FCE won't start. After I click on the application icon, the program seems to start up for few seconds, but then it crashes.
I have tried to reinstall FCE by deleting all of the files (following instructions I found online), but the same problem occurs.
Anyone have ideas? Any help would be great appreciated. I need FCE back!
    Thanks.

Have you updated anything or added any software recently?
Try trashing the preferences exactly as described here:-
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
Also, when you uninstalled FCE did you do it like this?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
It would also help if you told us the exact version of FCE and computer specs etc..
