Exporting Folders/Albums/Pictures Structure

I recently downloaded iPhoto Buddy to help me organize my 6000+ picture and 200+ video clip iPhoto Library (well over 10GB), that takes at least 2 minutes to load, and I of course have a very large and fairly complicated directory structure. I need to be able to export top level folders, with all sub-folders, albums, pictures and video retained from my current huge library into several smaller libraries.
I know that I could just copy all of the pictures into the different folders and then go in and delete the pics that don't belong there, but that would take forever, and unless there is no other way I don't want to have to do that.

<table><tr><td align=left bgcolor="#FFFFCC">I know that I could just copy all of the pictures into the different folders and then go in and delete the pics that don't belong there, but that would take forever, and unless there is no other way I don't want to have to do that.</td></tr></table>
Is the following what you don't want to do?
1 - make a duplicate of your current iPhoto library and name the folder with an appropriate descriptive name.
2 - use iPhoto Buddy to launch it as a new library and delete those items in it that you don't want.
3 - repeat for other sub-libraries with a specific content.
(Wasn't sure if this was the same as what you described)
Another possible solution would be to obtain iPhoto Library Manager and using it create a new, empty library and then copy selected albums, rolls, etc. from the old library to the new one. It will preserve keyword, comments, etc. You'll need to purchase the full version to get those capabilities.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

    Hello,
You know the way photoshop elements organiser, allows you to view/sort pictures by albums.
Is there a way to export all your pictures to say usb drive, but have the directory structure match the ps album structure.
If not any other program do that?

    Click on your album.
Press Ctrl+A to select all images in the album
    Click File >>Export as New
    Click the Browse button
    Navigate to your USB drive
    Click export

  • Exporting folders/ albums

I have been able to successfully export photos to my external hard drive in order to open them on windows, but instead of photos exporting the folders and albums the way I have them set up (in photos app), it separates them into folders by date. I would like to be able to export the folder with its included albums as one unit that retains the assigned folder and album names- or even just the album if it won't work for folders...Anybody had any luck with this yet?

I tried the way you show above and also using the other drop down options. If I export the pictures within the album, I can move them to named folders on the hard drive. If I export the album, it will still move the included photos to a folder, but takes them out of the album. However, if I select two albums and want them to move to the new folder as albums, I can't get it to work without it pulling all of the photos out of both albums and mixing them together. The same thing happens if I select the "Photos" folder that houses the albums. For example: I made a folder in Photos called "Animals". Inside it are two albums- "Alabama wildlife" and "Louisiana Wildlife". Each has five pictures. I want to export all of it together and already organized without having to set everything up again on the hard drive. :/  I can find a work around.... I just didn't want to have to organize everything twice. Any advice? Thanks

  • Seems this feature is highly requested... exporting folder, album structure

Been lookin on how to do this on the forum but no luck and I can only assume that this feature is not available...
    Scenario...
2 machines, one powermac, and one laptop...
Come home from a shooting session, organise my photos into Folder, albums:
    ie:
    Client ABC (folder)
    Projects Imports (folder)
All projects stacked in here (projects)
    Species (folder)
    Bird (Album)
    What ever (Album)
    etc etc etc....
Now I have to take these photos organised to my client tomorrow on my laptop.
So I somehow need to export the rated betters shots into my latop, to show the clients...
Yes I could create a smartfolder that looks for 3/4/5 stars blablabla and export all shots to one folder which I could copy accross to my laptop...
What I want is a way of exporting my whole Aperture folder/album structure into my empty Aperture Library on the laptop... So that I retain the original shots, in their folders, albums, in order that the client sees all photos organised as they are on my machine at home...
Seems many people want to do something like that, and seems that there is no way of doing that...
    Or is there....
    G5, D2.0, 5G-ram, 1TB storage, 30''display, macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, but my folder structure is not below my projects.
I have multiple projects kept in a project folder, but the folder where I keep each species (for example) in kept in a seperate folder, with albums for each species....
    Right...
You gave me an idea, I am testing this and see if I can get the same result by changing my structure...
I am creating a new project, dragging all my pics from various projects into this one projects (well, for that one client that is of course), I will then recreate a folder structure within this one project, and drag my albums into these new folders.... Hopefully it won't screw up my photos, and hopefully I will retain the ease of browing through my pics...
If this works, like you said I will just need to export the top project, and mission accomplished....
Saying that I think that it would be a good idea to be able to place projects within projects....
I tend to put dates within the title of each project, but now I am losing this and I need to use the date within the EXIF..
    Can live with it though...
Will post again and let you know if this has worked....
Maybe it is down to how you organise your library and then things get simple...
And there was me thinking that my library was spot on...
    Thanks for the input,
    Steph

  • How to export iPhoto Album in iMAC and have similar folder structure(with Timestamps) which can be viewed in finder

How to export iPhoto Album in iMAC and have similar folder structure(with Timestamps) which can be viewed in finder
In simple terms, I wanted to view the photos in Windows system, similar strcture of iPhotos

If you want to copy all of your photos to a Windows machine and have them in folders representing the iPhoto Events the were in quickly and easily just do the following:
1  - open the library with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:
2 - COPY the Originals/Masters folder to the Desktop.
3 - copy the Originals/Masters folder to the Windows machine.
This will give you all of your original image file in their Event folder on the Windows machine.
NOTE:  With iPhoto 8 or newer the Event folders in the Masters folder will be titled by date (EXIF) if imported from a camera.  If imported from a folder the event folder will have the same title as the source folder.  If imported singularly or in a group without a folder the title will be a date, either the EXIF date or import date.
With iPhoto 7 (08) and earlier the Event folders in the Originals folder will have the same title as the Event has in the library.
This method would be quicker but not provide the additional metadata you might have added in iPhoto like keywords, titles, descriptions that exporting out of iPhoto with Format=JPEG and the checkboxes selected to include keywords, titles, places, etc, checked.

  • How do you export iPhoto albums to an external drive and have all the albums still labeled?

I am having an issue exporting the iphoto albums to an external drive. When I do it, it either just drops all the pictures in together or it separates them by events, but my iphotos are arranged in albums, not events so that doesn't help.  Can anyone help with this?
Also, I'm new to mac and i'm noticing iphotos has a lot of limitations...I can't save photos automatically to folders/albums in iphoto bc it doesnt show in the finder, I can't upload to facebook without doing it from iphoto, and I obviously can't save to external drive easily just yet.  Should I just be saving all of my photos in Pictures in the finder? Is there a way you can save them in pictures and then be able to open them in iphotos? I'm getting so frustrated and ready to go back to my PC. =(

    A couple of general comments:
    1. iPhoto is not compulsory. You don't have to use it.
    2. But if you do, then you're going  to need to make a small conceptual leap, and learn just a little.
The Conceptual Leap: Your Files and your Photos are not the same thing. The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
The Learning: iPhoto replaces the Finder (or file browser) for everything to do with your Photo. And I do mean everything. Organising, Editing, sharing with other apps, printing, uploading, whatever are all done either with or via iPhoto. It's you "go-to" for anything to do with your Photos.
The upshot of that is that how (or where) the files are stored doesn't matter - as long as they are safe and backed up - because after importing to iPhoto you never directly access those files again.
So, you want to organise your Photos: do it in the iPhoto Window. Events, Albums, Keywords, and so on. You do all your work via that window or the media browsers that make the Library available in every app in the OS.
So: want to edit a photo, but not with iPhoto? You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
How to access the Photos for whatever reason you may need them see this user tip:

For details of the Export dialogue: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
You can more or less recreate your folder tree in the iPhoto Window - start at the bottom of your tree and drag  folder of images to the Albums Heading. iPhoto will import the images and make an album of them. Then File -> New Folder and drag the Album to that. Folders can hold nested folders and Albums. And so work from there.
But if your folder tree is date based that's a bit pointless, as the Calendar search and Smart Albums make it pretty redundant. With these you can find any photos from a specific day, week, month, year or date-range in the Library.
If the folder tree is theme based, then keywords will a more effective way of working.
And Albums are more flexible that folders in the Finder, as an image can be in any number of Albums and use no extra disk space whatever.
So, it's a whole new way of working with photos for you.
    To your specific questions:
I am having an issue exporting the iphoto albums to an external drive. When I do it, it either just drops all the pictures in together or it separates them by events, but my iphotos are arranged in albums, not events so that doesn't help
Export them one album at a time.

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
But given the above... why are you doing this? You're defeating the non-destructive workflow by doing it. Are you trying to back up?
.I can't save photos automatically to folders/albums in iphoto bc it doesnt show in the finder,
Not clear exactly what you're asking here, but does the above open some ideas?
I can't upload to facebook without doing it from iphoto
Yeah you can... For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
    It's the first one...
and I obviously can't save to external drive easily just yet.
Yeah you can but what exactly are you trying to save, and, again, why? Different purposes have different workflows.
Should I just be saving all of my photos in Pictures in the finder?
That's a personal choics, but not if you plan on using iPhoto. And as I started with iPhoto is not compulsory... As to why you shouldn't with iPhoto:

    Reasons for bothering to learn...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Exporting IPhoto Albums via Automator

I would like to export all my iPhoto Albums to an external drive. Since I have my photos already organized in Albums in iPhoto, I would like to keep the same structure in the form of folders/directories on the target drive. But have it in a flat folder/file structure instead of iPhotos more sophisticated format (AFAICT)
Is there an easy way to use AppleScript (does that still exist) or Automator to export every Album in my iPhoto Library to a separate folder on a designated drive? I'm happy if the folder name is simply derived from the album name, I can later go in and modify things. Its just that going through 200+ albums isquite tiring and error prone.
    Thanks!
    Alex

    Terence,
    version number is 9.6.1.
As for OS vs iPhoto Forum - I guess in the end I don't mind if there is a solution that uses Automator or some other means. In that sense, yes my question would have been overly specific.
    Thanks!

  • Subfolder Format: Exporting by album title

Aperture makes it very easy to make albums containing all the images from a certain day, just find all pictures from that day using the Library Search HUD and click on "Make Album from Selection". I can make albums and title them with the topic of that day's images, but I can't export the title of the album. The custom subfolder format screen has options to name the subfolders after the project name or the containing folder, but not the album.
Does anyone know of an easy way to get around this? I would like to either export folders with titles reflecting the album title, or an easy way (one step) to create a project containing all images from a certain day.

btw, I'd like to make this process as automated as possible. I frequently will go a few weeks without exporting images for my website, it's time consuming to have to go through and manually rename all the folders when I keep my albums so well organized and named.

  • How can i create a new album picture in iphone 4g ?

    hi to evryone
how can i create a new album picture in iphone 4g ??
    thanks

    Hello,
As I understand, you would like to know how to create photo albums on your iPhone? This is possible only by first moving your photos onto your Mac or PC.
On the Mac use iPhoto to sort your pictures into albums then sync them back onto the phone via iTunes.
On the PC sort your photos using folders or software like Adobe Photoshop Elements then sync them back onto the phone via iTunes.
    Hope this helps

  • How to export an album and keep images in the same order in elements 11 mac

I made an album of my trip to Australia (lots of pictures) and changed the order of the images (not the same as shooting order) and when I export the images in the album to a folder or memorystick, the images are copied to that place but I lost the album order of the images.
How can I prevent that, without having to renumber al 500 images separatly?

    Thanks for the tip, Michel

The order in album is only kept in the organizer database, so the only way not to lose that order is to rename files.
If you are using the 'export' function, select your album in custom order, select all photos and in the dialog, choose to rename with a common base name.

  • Export an album from iPhoto to Aperture

When I tried to export an album from iPhoto the following notice appeared; "Unable to create/users/the house icon/Pictures. Any ideas? I appreciate all the help you can give me. Thank you.

You can get this message if your iPhoto Library is corrupted. Go through that Album and Select the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

  • Proplems syncing some folders of pictures to iPhone

I have several folders of pictures sync'd to my iPhone and all is good there but there are couple of folders that just will not sync.  I check them and "apply" but after the sync some folders just do not show up on the phone.  I have tried unchecking, syncing and repeating the process.  I have plenty of space on the iphone so that is not an issue either.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Selected Folders will only appear if you have sub-folders created under the folder that is selected to be synced.
e.g.  You have a AAAA folder with sub-folders BBBB, CCCC, DDDD, EEEE within folder AAAA.  So if you have selected AAAA folder to be synced then choose All Folders. All photos under AAAA, BBBB, CCCC, DDDD, EEEE will be synced over to your Device and you will have BBBB, CCCC, DDDD, EEEE appeared as albums on your Devices.
If you have chosen Selected Folders, then BBBB, CCCC, DDDD, EEEE will appear under it to allow you to select one or more of these folders to be synced.
There is no option for you to select folders all over your hard drive to be synced,
    Hope the above explains.

  • Exporting folders to a different drive or location

Hi. Using LR2 in Windows. Would like to export my complete folder structure with all photos to another location at one time. This offers "flattened" photos for easy e-mails and storage. I have been doing this manually by creating similar folders on another part of the drive and selecting all files in the LR catalog folder for export, but this is clumsy and error prone.
In other words, is there a way to basically export all of my photos (about 6,500) in one operation with their folder structures intact to another location and not back to the "original folder" as LR offers?
    Thanks much,
    Andy Dichter

And likely never unless enough people submit feature requests.
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
I have no idea but perhaps the Lr SDK would allow an enterprising developer to create an export plug-in that provides the capability the OP desires.

  • Exporting an album or group of photos from IPhoto 08

I have read the various posts on exporting photos from IPhoto 08. I have an email program that allows only one attachment/file. When I export an album to the desktop, it is not delivered as album but includes all the separate JPEG photos in the album. My desktop then shows only the separate JPEG photos. Thus I am unable to attach an entire album/file to any program, but only separate pictures. What can I do?? By the way, I old and not real sharp on the Mac, so make any suggestions simple please! Thanks!

    Stephen
When you export the Album, make a folder on the desktop to receive the pics:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Then you can zip that folder (in the Finder: File Menu -> Compress 'Folder Name'. This will make it a zip file. Attach that to your email.
What do you use for email? I've never heard of one that allows only a single attachment.
