Exporting for Windows Media Player/MPEG (help in translating mixed message)

So a client of mine had an unusual request today. He's been asked by some tech folk who are doing 'commercials' in the theater lobby to provide them with clips with these specifications (and I use that term loosely):
MPEG files that are non-compressed and play in Windows Media Player (no Quicktime allowed) and are Audio Enhanced. Needs to be burned on a CD not a DVD.
Yeah, sounds like folk who have no clue as to what they want and are trying to pretend they do to me too
So...any ideas on what they really want? And is it best to export via Compressor or invest in that Flip4Mac?
I'm probably going to get a phone call from the tech folk on Monday and want to be a bit forearmed w/some idea of what the heck they REALLY mean!

Yup, that's why I'm so perplexed by their specs. Kinda like asking me to make a Photoshop picture that's bright and and can be printed big
Since I don't ever deal w/WMP (shudder) was wondering if their gobbledeegook actually made sense in another realm (glad to hear it doesn't seem to).

What is the safest codec to export a video to be shown on a PC with Windows Media Player?  I have Compressor and Adobe's Media Encoder s well as Mpeg Streamclip on my Mac.
    Thanks.

Sorry, my mistake .... WMV through AME is Windows only. You will need Flip4Mac to output WMV.

  • Exporting for Windows Media Player?

I work on a Mac and am switching from FCP. In FCP the option was to export as QT or h.264. I'm noticing in CS5.5 on a Mac that there is no .WMV option.
    1. Is .WMV not used anymore?
    2. What is the best format to export for Windows users?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jim,
post your exact export options (screen capture of the AME gui video, audio & multiplexer tabs will suffice) - I'll have a look for you.
MP4[h.264 + pcm] or MP4[h.264 + aac] etc should absolutely play on Windows 7 (and Vista?). Now if it's Windows XP then yes I don't think h.264 is supported as a video codec and it also doesn't understand the MP4 container.
!tip! if you bring up WMP->Help->About then click on the bottom "Technical Support Information" you'll get a page showing all the codecs WMP has to work with.
eg here is my virgin work computer (windows 7) that plays mp4[h.264] just fine...

  • EXPORT LONG FILES IN 1080p for Windows Media Player

Hello, need some help in exporting and encoding some large files from Premiere CS6.
We have 4 Sequences, each totalling 45minutes in length and in 1080p (ProRes422).
We need to export and encode for Windows Media Player as quickly as possible.
Looks like each export is going to take over an hour from Premiere as "Match Sequence Settings"
-keep in mind there is NO AUDIO.
Once it's out of Premiere as an MPEG, I can transcode to any format. Ultimately WMV would be optimal,
but we need to transcode the MPEG into a MOV file before 'Episode' will accept it, just to make the WMV files.
Target files: (4) 1080p Windows Media Player compatible files
Does anyone have a better workflow workaround? Midnight hour and need help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Thanks Jim, I can't export to WMV out of Premiere or Media Encoder. I use Episode to make my WMV files, and since Episode doesn't take MPEG in from Premiere (sigh)
I have to first make them in Quicktimes..
But yes! Anything Windows Media Player can handle... should I just go with the 5GB MPG files? No way for me to test, I'm on a Mac and these are playing on a PC
    thanks for your help

  • Plugin for Windows Media Player is not working with Firefox 4 on Windows 7

I updated my Firefox to the latest version 4 yesterday, but since this time seems plugin for Windows Media Player not working anymore. When I visit some website with embedded video - like [http://www.ta3.com/sk/live this] - the window with WMP is not displayed and no video is playing. The website reports: You don´t have any plugin for playing of this video.
I reinstalled the plugin for WMP several times - with no success. This problem is on all webpages with embedded video for WMP. The installation of WMP plugin is successfully finished, but no video is playing. I checked the “plugins“ folder in the installation directory of Firefox and everything seems to be OK. Where is also the problem? Please, help me with solving of this problem...

  • Downloading plug-ins for windows media player

i'm a brand new mac user -- bought a macbook less than 24 hours ago. i have not been able to trouble shoot installing plug-ins for windows media player. if anyone can advise, i would be most appreciative.

Windows Media Player for Mac was discontinued more than a year ago by Microsoft. They recommend using the free Flip4Mac player <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia >.
A good addition to your arsenal of media players would also be the stand-alone VLC Media Player <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>. It's a Swiss Army Knife of media players.
    Hope this helps!

There is no Windows Media player plugin for any browser on Android. If you are lucky download the file and see if any of media players on the system can play the file.

You are going to need to have two versions of the video file. One for Mac Quicktime users and one for WIndows Media Player users.
WMV Studio Pro looks like it could meet your needs.

However you will need a Windows Media Server to stream the WMV file otherwise it will act as a download only.

  • DRM for Windows Media Player on the ipod

My ipod is worthless, if it can't play files with DRM for Windows Media Player. My library, that offers this files for download says, it would cost 50.000 dollars to provide also ipod-compatible files. Because they can't spend this money, I will need a new mp3-player!

The specs for the iPod (box, website) are pretty clear about what formats it supports. Unfortunately, protected WMA files are not supported.
If the rights you have for those files includes burning them to an audio CD, you might want to do that.

  • Export from Mac for Windows Media Player - square pixel widescreen

    Hello:
I'm working with a square pixel wide screen iPad animation video. I built comps in AE and am editing in Premiere. I'm having issues with playback in Windows Media Player. • Encoding iMovie files for Windows Media Player

    iMovie 11 / 9.0
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I edit audio/video in iMovie (currently the only program I have) and need to output for streaming on the internet. Most of our subscribers are using older versions of Windows Media Player and as I understand won't be able to play MP4. I couldn't play the MP4 using Windows Media Player 9.0, "invalid format" error.
What software could I use to convert MP4 to a format for streaming on the internet that our subscribers play using WMP? Should I save the file out of iMovie in a different format to convert?
I have Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006 but my options are h.264 or flash, got error messages when I tried to "Edit Export Settings".
    Thanks

The easiest way is to upload video to YouTube and embed videos on your site from there. This way you don't have to worry about which version of Windows, which version of Internet Exlorere, etc.
Another way, ask your users to install QuickTime For Windows. Then export normally,
Another way, get one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac, and you can convert files to wmv using QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • Problems with Ipod and Windows Media Player PLEASE HELP

Ok i am not sure if this is the correct forum or not but i am having a problem. I have a Windows computer (Yes a windows computer please dont everyone yell at me) and i have a new ipod 30 gig video. Ok well when i put itunes on it changes all my music on my computer gets changed to AAC format and i cannot play music in windows media player. Ok well that is not my big issue. I make videos for church using windows movie maker and i cannot import music because nothing windows can recognize Itunes format which is AAC. well is there anyway so i can use itunes and still use WIndows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker... Any info will be greatly appreciated. THANKS ALL

I believe Quicktime Pro (which is available for Windoze) is capable of opening any WMP files and then you just export it as iPod format. That is how I get video onto the iPod. The Music and Videos all can be placed onto your iPod through iTunes.
So, if you are creating videos in your program, and want them on your iPod, then that is how you can do it.
Videos on your iPod have nothing to do with the formatting of your music. But, as the earlier post stated, change your prefs in iTunes to import as MP3. But, your videos HAVE to be in MP4 or M4V format to work on the iPod.
    Good luck... and I'm a j3susfreak too

  • Quick time file to be converted for windows media player usage on web site

i have a quicktime file and need to convert it for usage on a website through windows media player. i have final cut and compressor and can convert it to mpeg 1 and 2. is there a recommended codec or tool i should use for the conversion. the file will probably be viewed through a downlaod versus streaming video...if that matters.
    thanks

Although I dislike MPEG-1 because of the large file size those .mpg files are commonly used on the Web. They can be played by nearly any computer and are not "Player" dependent like WMP or QuickTime so each user can decide how to view them.
As a bonus they are a "playback" format which makes editing and repurposing them a bit more difficult so your media is a bit more "secure".
I'll stick to QuickTime formats (avoiding H.264 video codec) and force QuickTime down their WiMPy throats. Millions of PC's have QuickTime installed (because of iTunes) and others can easily download the free Player and browser plug-in. By avoiding H.264 my files can be viewed on Mac's and PC's that can't install QuickTime 7.

  • Exporting to Windows Media Player

Whenever I try to export a movie from Quicktime Pro to Windows Media Player it will only create a 30 second clip. Why won't it export the whole file? Thanks for any info/tips!

You have only the playback version of flip-4-mac, free. To encode you need to buy the component that allows you to export to WMP.
