Exporting from LR5 at specific dimensions

Exporting in LR5 for a photo contest.  Stated requiremnts are "high res JPEG at 300 dpi, no larger than 8x12 inches".  Just not sure what settings to use in LR5/cc to meet these specs.  There is no "dpi".
Am I right in assuming that if I put 300 into ppi, that that will set the resolution and also 'fix' the maximize size of the image so it wont get enlarged beyond what would look good/be printable?  I imagine that the images are 'judged' as JPEGs on a monitor and the selections will then will be printed in a Blurb book in various final printed sizes.
I obviously want no degradation of image quality and dont want all images automatically enlarged to 8x12 inches.  Some of my pics are square crops and dont want them changed to 8x12.  Also one pic is from small area of original image and not sure if it will blow up well to 8x12 so dont want it automatically enlarged to 8x12 inches.  Shooting a D300 in raw if that matters.
New to this and fairly clueless so apologize if I'm asking an obvious question.  Any help appreciated, but looking for recomendations of the exact LR5 export settings that I should enter.  Thanks.

I  interpret the photo contest requirements as meaning, "We will be making "review prints" of all submitted pictures at a size no larger than 8"x12" and ask that you submit your images at 300dpi.
I suggest submitting your pictures using the maximum print size, which can be done using these LR Export module settings:
1) File Settings: JPEG, sRGB, Quality = 90 or higher
2) Image Sizing: Short Edge = 8.0", Resolution = 300 ppi
Standard 2:3 aspect ratio images will print at 8"x12" and Square 1:1 aspect ratio images will print at 8"x8".
If you have any images with an aspect ratio larger than the standard 2:3 ratio you will need to use Long Edge = 12", Resolution = 300 ppi to create these JPEGs. This is the required to meet 8"x12" maximum print size @ 300 dpi constraint. For example if you have a panoramic image with 1:2 ratio it must print at 6"x12" size to stay within the 8"x12" print size constraint. When reviewing images the judges don't want to be influenced by the print size, so this constraint helps to keep all of the "review prints" as close as possible in size (regardless of their aspect ratio).
3) Output Sharpening: Screen Standard, Low, or High as required to achieve the desired sharpening of the Exported image as it appears in LR at 1:1 Zoom view.
(Technically a print will need added sharpening, but this will make the screen image appear over-sharpened.)
"Is there a way in LR5 to see my image's pixel dimensions?  In photoshop it seems I can find that under Image.  Cant seem to find that info in LR5 tho."
You can only see the image files pixel dimensions from inside the Library and Develop modules, but not in the Export module. Unlike PS you can't see the image file's 'Resolution' in any of LR's modules. Camera image files technically have no 'Resolution' that is of any practical use. For example a full-frame Canon 5D MKII camera has a sensor 'Resolution' of 5616x3744, which translate to a 'Resolution' value of 5616÷36mm = 156ppmm x 25.4 = 3962.4 ppi. However, it would be useful to have the the ability to read and use the image file 'Resolution inside LR for specicifc purposes such as this photo contest. Here's what I have suggested:

  • Export from LR5.3 Unable to export

    Hi at All,
i have a big Problem with my LR5.3, i´m not able to export any Pictures.
    Maybe someone can help me
An internal error has occurred: Win32 API error 2 ("The system can not find the file specified.") When calling from ShellExecuteExW AgWorkspace.shellExecute
    Some Information of my System:
    i7 4820 3.7GHz; 16GB Ram; Win7 Pro SP1 64Bit
Thanks in advance for your help

This most likely means that the photo has been either moved or renamed outside of Lightroom, and so now Lightroom cannot find the photo.
You should see an exclamation point icon in the rectangle around the photo. Click on that icon, and locate the photo on your hard disk, and then everything should be fine.
Hint: don't move or rename your photos outside of Lightroom

  • When I export from LR5.3 I get an error message Win32 API error . However the export seems to work.

The message is Win32 API error 2 ("The system cannot find the file specified") when calling ShellExecuteExW from AgWorkplace.shellExecute. However the export works. What is happening and how do I get rid of the error message?

Near the bottom of the Export Daialog, in the "Post-Processing" section make sure that the "After Export" box is not empty (which is invalid and causes the export operation to trip up). Use the drop-down to select a valid choice such as "Do Nothing".

  • Please Help! How to save exact edits from LR5

    Good Afternoon All,
I have been doing many edits in LR5 and I am losing something along the way...this is what I have been doing....
The image is edited in LR5 (exposure, blacks, whites etc)
The image is edited in Photoshop (spot heal)...(copy with lightroom edits)
Edits made in Photoshop are saved back to lightroom (not sure saving method here?)
Final product is exported from LR5 to email (sRGB /JPEG)
The blacks in the image look VERY different once emailed from the Mac Computer.  When viewing on the IPAD, Laptop, Mobile devices these images dont look exactly the same prior to being sent via email.
    Any help much appreciated!

Hey sorry, I am coming back to the post and saying that it didn't work. I was exporting as sRGB...and now when I upload it to facebook or my website it is not uploading the same...
I thought that it worked because it was cropped small but when I enlarged it the picture looks distorted as if changes were made and the background looks faded. I used a black background for my pictures and you are able to see several creases in the background. I would like the background of the picture to be black as well as any types of changes that I make within ANY picture I want to be able to export it as well as be able to change it to any size
    this is becoming frustrated...

  • Error when trying to export images from LR5 to Photoshop CC

When I try to export an image without LR adjustments (original or copy) from LR5 to Photoshop CC, I get this message: "Adobe Photoshop CC cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop CC works with this version of OS X..."

  • EXPORTING FILES FROM LR5

Using Win7 64-bit O/S.  My ususal procedure from LR4 after editing is to export to Elements 9 catalog using the Cntl-Shift-E commmand.  I rename the file as it suits me then export to my hard drive location by pressing "Export".  I then go to PSE and get the message "New files have been found.  Do you want to import?" Clicking yes adds the file to my Library.  After installing LR5, I can't import edited files from LR5 OR Photohop (CS5).  Similar experiences?  Work arounds?

I can't import edited files from LR5 OR Photohop (CS5).
Why not? What happens when you try? Is there an error message?
In my opinion there there is a work around as designed by Adobe:
Use LR5 as your "Organizer" (not PSE), and use PSE as an auxiliary editor. The process is much smoother than what you describe, and your problem goes away. Adobe designed Lightroom to work smoothly with the PSE Editor; but there is no design to allow Lightroom to work smoothly with the PSE Organizer.

  • Lightroom 6 doesn't migrate Export User Presets from LR5

Tonight I upgraded from LR5 to LR6 (standalone, not CC).  My catalog migrated successfully and generally the library and develop modules seem to work fine.  But when I go to export, all my User Presets are gone.  Any advice on how I can recover my export user presets so that I don't have to manually recreate them all?  I'm on a Late 2012 Mac Mini, 2.6/i7/16GB, OS X 10.9.5.

Thank you, that was the problem.  They were checked as stored with catalog in LR5, but not in LR6.  Once I clicked the checkbox in LR6, I found all my export user presets.  Now I assume that if I subsequently uncheck that box, LR6 will create a unique file to house those presets?  Does it matter if they are or are not in the catalog?  I've got a decent grasp of LR's functionality, but wasn't aware of this and don't know if there are pluses or minuses with either approach...

  • MDX: Selecting specific dimension member and its descendants from parent child dimension where dimension member names can be same in dimension hierarchy

I'm creating a SSRS report using SSAS cube as a source.
When creating a dataset for the report, I'm having trouble with MDX to select a specific dimension member and its descendants from parent child dimension where dimension member names can be same in dimension hierarchy.
Lets say for example that I have an account dimension where,
    In level 02 I have company ID:s 101, 102, 103 and so on...
In level 03 I have Balance sheet
In level 04 I have some account groups, Assets, Liabilities and so on... and In level 05 I have individual accounts
How can I select for example company 102:s Assets from level 04 and its descendants?
Normally in adventure works I would do this if I've wanted Current Assets and its descendants:
SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[Amount] } ON COLUMNS, NON EMPTY
    { (DESCENDANTS([Account].[Accounts].[Account Level 03].[Current Assets]) ) } ON ROWS
    FROM [Adventure Works]
But in my Account dimension at level 04 I have Assets member as many times as I have companies in level 02.

Is there anyway to share an application on an Adobe Muse web page? More specifically an applet exported from the Processing interface?

    Hi,
You can add your app to the Muse page using the Insert HTML feature in Muse. However, it depends on your hosting server whether or not the app will work. For example, if your app is in php and your server is configured for php, the app should work.

  • Can't Export from FCE to QuickTime Movie w/o recompression

I have problems with choosing the correct settings for export of a FCE video clip to QuickTime Movie. I want the best possible quality (without recompression).
    In the manual it says:
"Exporting a Self-Contained Movie Without Recompressing the Media
If you choose to export a self-contained movie, you have the option to not recompress the media in your clip or sequence. If you deselect the Recompress All Frames option and choose Current Settings from the Setting pop-up menu, Final Cut Express simply copies frames from existing media files into the new file with no recompression."
I can't find that option in FCE 4.01 - is it a mistake in the manual? My source media was captured from miniDV tape and the captured media file has the following formate:
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Color profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Total bit rate: 29,794
My exported file has this format:
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
    Codec: Linear PCM, H.264
    Color Profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total bit rate: 2,151
I have seen this question in the FCE archive and people simply say there is no recompression in FCE Export to QT Movie, but clearly there is since I see the H.264 codec listed in my output file and the bit-rate is a about 1/14th the rate of the original source material. The output file size is also much smaller. What gives. How can I get an unrecompressed file out of FCE so I can send it to a coworker for futher editing with his FCE.

    Double check:
There are only three options in the QuickTime Movie export window.
    1. Include: The Audio and Video, Audio Only or Video Only.
    2. Markers: Select whateve you want or don't want.
    3. The Make Movie Self-Contained selection check box.
    Is this what  you see?
The export will mirror the Sequence or selected part of the Sequence.

  • Crop to specific dimensions?

Is there a way to crop to a specific dimension?  I have a 3888x2592 image and would like to crop it to 2400x1600.  Problem I am having is I can get it to 2388x1589 or 2420x1619 or finally after many tries (over a minute of attempting) got it to 2399x1599.  Is there any way to FORCE it to a specific dimension?
Also, on export I know you can resize an image, but are you able to apply a resize within lightroom itself?  Can't think of a situation where I would want to do that, but just out of curiousity...
    Thanks,
    Clayton

    I agree with Andrzej007.  Sometimes I need a 1:1 crop
First, to those who ask, "Why not do it during export?"  Or worse, "Why would you want to do that?"....   Does it REALLY matter to you WHY I want to do a crop of a specific number of pixels?  The fact is some people really need this.
I do a lot of timelapse stuff and build videos at 1920x1080.  I shoot full frame (in my case that is 4608x3456).  I correct my shots in LR.  So, what's the best way to get my images to 1920x1080?
    Here's an example image:
Well, I could crop with a fixed aspect ratio (which is 16:9) and then export with a resize to 1920x1080, which would give me this:
Of course I can crop a smaller portion of the image, and then on export resize down to 1920x1080.
But what about cropping to exactly 1920x1080 at a true 1:1 pixel crop (without resizing down)?
    So to crop this image...
... and end up with this....
... I would need to "guess" at the size, release the mouse and check (with informaion overlay turned on).  Then do it again.  And again.  And again.....until I got it exactly at 1920x1080.  That's a royal pain in the rear.
In Photoshop I can use the Marquee tool and define exactly 1920px x 1080px and then go to Image > Crop:
But in LR there is NO way to define actual pixels.  Seems like it would be fairly easy to do, since you can already enter in a custom aspect ratio.  Just add something like a little checkbox in the custom aspect ratio box.  Something like this:
Or make it a set of radio buttons with the ability to choose between aspect ratio and actual pixels.  (And rename the setting to "Custom Dimmensions" instead of "Custom Aspect Ratio".
JimHess raised an interesting issue (emphasis added):
In Lightroom, photo dimensions is part of the export function, not the editing.  You cannot specify a size in the develop module.  You are going to have to modify your workflow.  Crop to the 2:3 aspect ratio, and then export with the long side set to 2400 pixels.  That's the way it works.  Otherwise, you would have to have a separate image for every purpose.  The whole idea (for me, at least) is to have one master image that I can use for any purpose.  Then I use the export function to customize the copy for whatever purpose I need.
Is this true?  Doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Here is some sample crop metadata that LR saves:
       crs:CropTop="0.232327"
       crs:CropLeft="0.587547"
       crs:CropBottom="0.541667"
       crs:CropRight="1"
       crs:CropAngle="0"
       crs:CropConstrainToWarp="0"
So LR is saving information about 3 corners (don't really need the 4th).  That's it.  So it should absolutely be doable to define a specific number of pixels to crop to instead of an aspect ratio.  The software will still write the same resulting metadata - the location of each of the three corners.
So then, why not just do what other people suggest?  Why crop to whatever portion of the image I want and then resize to 1920x1080 on export?
Well, as Jim said, the whole idea behind LR is to have a single master image that I can use in a whole bunch of ways.  So I can make virtual copies to do other kinds of crops.  But exporting?  That actually means I'm creating "a separate image" for the purpose of doing a timelapse.
See, as it stands right now, I can make all my changes in LR, and then import the RAW files into After Effects, and AE will read the metadata from the file and apply it.  So if I get my crop right in LR (set exactly to 1920x1080) then I can simply import the RAW files and AE will see the footage at the right size.  No need to render before importing, and no scaling needed, which improves the render time.  I don't need to create a whole new set of exported images that eat up storage space.  And I can easily go back in and make an adjustment to my crop in LR, then switch over to AE and reload the sequence.  It'll instantly update, with no need to re-export from LR.
See, THAT's the power of LR.  Exporting is great when you're at the END of your workflow, and for me, LR is just the first step in a long post production workflow.
Edit:  Of course sometimes I don't need 1:1 pixel crops; sometimes I'll want to resize.  In these cases I'll set my crop using a set aspect ratio and then deal with the resizing in After Effects, avoiding the need to render twice (because I still don't need to export from LR to use the RAW files in AE).

  • How do I link to Anchor Text from browser to PDF file exported from InDesign?

I see that this question was asked previously but not answered:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3737541
I need a way to link to topics (from an HTML page) within a structured PDF file generated from InDesign, i.e. one that has an interactive bookmarks
panel, that doesn't break the links when the file is updated.
In particular, I don't want to refer to:
    *  page numbers because the document will repaginate when it is updated, breaking existing links
    * named destinations that are numeric as addition/deletion of topics renumbers the named destinations, breaking the links.
Is there any option in InDesign that creates named destinations derived from bookmark titles as that would seem to solve my problem?
I have a similar need, but I have not been able to find an answer anywhere online, even after a several hours of research.
I am on contract with General Electric to develop a UI Style Guide for an international team of developers. My client wants to be able to distribute the Style Guide as a PDF document, but needs to provide links to specific topics when submitting a "Story" in an Agile development environment to the programmers.
Ideally, I would like to be able to create "named destinations" in InDesign such that I can provide the client with a list of URLs similar to this format:
    file:\\StyleGuide\Test1-20131024a.pdf\#nameddest=AnchorText-01
However, I can not figure out how to create "named destinations" in the PDF file from the InDesign file in which I have created the Anchor Text in the Hyperlinks tab.
Alternately, the client would be satisfied with the ability to link to specific bookmarks in the exported PDF file that have been derived from the configuration of the Table of Contents styles, but my research has led me to believe that it is not possible to hyperlink from a browser window to a bookmark in a PDF file (only to specific page numbers, search word lists, named destinations, and comments) as described here: http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
Having been using InDesign since 1988, when it was PageMaker, I would prefer to use it to provide GE with the most attractive deliverable, but they are now leaning heavily toward having me licensed with Madcap Flare, which has this capability built in:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
Please help me to find a solution that will allow me to continue using InDesign for this project.
    Thank you!

Follow-up post (solution is not available):
I have just completed a phone call with Gaurev Sethi of Adobe escalated technical support in which I shared my screen to explain and demonstrate the desire to link from an external URL to a specific location within a PDF file that has been exported from InDesign. After 40 minutes, during which I was placed on hold a few times while he consulted with his team, it was determined that the desired functionality is not supported in InDesign and has been identified as a limitation of the software.
In researching alternate documentation software that supports PDF export, I discovered that Madcap Software supports this functionality in its Flare product:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
Note that linking via URL to a bookmarked location within a PDF is not supported:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
More about parameters that can be specified to open PDF files are available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters.pdf
Although the above link is for a previous version of Acrobat, I could find no evidence to the contrary in the current SDK documentation.

  • How do I export from Aperture to iPhoto?

Ok, I am very new at all of this, and find it quite confusing.
I took several hundred raw photos and imported them into Aperture. I believe they are all in a 'project', the yellow box looking icon? Then, I created numerous folders inside this project, in which I carefully sorted all my photos by subject - about 18 folders. Then, I worked with each folder, fine tuning each image, and adding exif metadata, and rating each image. So far so good.
Now, I want to bring all this images (as full size jpegs) into iPhoto.. this is where I am getting bogged down. There is an export function in Aperture, and an import function in iPhoto: which do I use?
I have been experimenting with various scenarios, but nothing seems to be working the way I want.. specifically, to have all my images in iPhoto - IN THE SAME STRUCTURE as I have in Aperture. When I did manage to bring them into iPhoto, they all came over in one big massive event, leaving all my sorting and ratings behind. This can't be right.. I don't want to resort them all again, moving them into the appropriate folders. And I don't want to have to re-enter the exif metadata and ratings again.
Can someone please help me with this?

Export from Aperture and then import to iPhoto.
Alternatively, you can share your Previews with iPhoto but that gets only the Preview.
FWIW: your workflow makes no sense. It's like writing your novel in TextEdit then opening it in Word to Spell Check and then copying it back to TextEdit. Why not just write your novel in Word? Aperture is not an editor. It's a complete replacement for iPhoto. It will do everything that iPhoto does, and then more. Or if you want to stick with iPhoto, get an editor and use it as an external editor in that.
