Exporting HD to AppleTV

Hi all,
I have a PAL HD camcorder and would like to export from iMovie to my AppleTV at the maximum quality I can. I have read another post and believe for PAL it should be 1280 x 720. Unfortunately the AppleTV preset it set at the NTSC max of 960 x 540. Could someone tell me what manual export settings I should use to create a 1280 x 720 @ 25fps movie that will play on the AppleTV? Below is the post I am referring too.
Thanks
Steve
The tv will not however play these files and they will need further reduction in resolution and data rate. What these reductions are depends on whether you are using PAL or NTSC, for PAL you can export to 1280 x 720 @ 25 fps and a datarate of 5 Mbps, NTSC will be 960 x 540 @ 30 fps and a datarate of 5 Mbps. If you are using imovies tv preset, PAL will be exported also at 960 x 540, you'll need to use the manual settings to achieve 1280 x 720.

I personally would probably do my editing in iMovie HD. When done with the project, I would simply open the project shared "timeline" reference file in MPEG Streamclips and select the "Export to MPEG-4 > iTunes > TV 1280x720 (HD)" option. Since your frame rate is already 25 fps, I would then simply turn on the motion adaptive deinterlacer and run a 30-second test to see what the output looks like.

  • Slideshow Export options and AppleTV

Slideshow options seem a nice way to create a quick video of still/video clips (eg for an AppleTV), but unless I'm missing something Export options seem rather limited.
There isn't enough control over encoding parameters.
My first attempt exporting a mix of photos and video clips (30fps source) using the AppleTV setting failed to sync to AppleTV.
Inspecting the file, resolution was 720p but the reported fps was 28fps. That is too high for AppleTV which officially only handles 24fps at 720p but will usually cope with 25fps. Bitrate was also fairly high, nearly 5Mbps the quoted AppleTV limit for h264.
Now I'm not wild about changing fps for video conversion anyway, but I would like to compare the 720p output vs the '540p' option we often opt for to maintain fps with 30fps source material.
Custom dropdown gives very little in the way of options I can see, and codecs are limited to h264/MPEG4 - people might in some circumstances want to export at full quality to add to projects in other apps with greater editing control.
Any idea if you can export with more customisation of parameters?

Aperture 3.0.3 has an option for iPod size through HD 1080p
    As has iPhoto 09
as well as a Custom Export feature, which allows you to choose the Codec
It allows you to choose between 2: Mpeg 4 and h.264. iPhoto can export to anything that QuickTime will support: including - and by no means limited it to - Apple Intermediate, HDV, DV, uncompressed and so on. There are 50 or so codecs I can choose from with iPhoto.
    Uploaded with Skitch!
    /Frame Rate/Width/Height
    As can iPhoto.
As I said, this is odd. You would expect Aperture to have the more options.

  • Export quality in AppleTV

The quality of the video when using the.. ermmm... high quality export is dreadful. I was hoping that these new claims of professional encoding quality Apple's been claiming this week would allow me to have DVD-quality home movies exported from iMovie. You've removed DVD sharing export from iMovie, and hacked back maximum quality.
I AM VERY CONFUSED. WHAT'S GOING ON ?

Correct. Use Share -> Export using Quicktime -> Movie to Quicktime Movie -> Options. Then pick H.264, and set the Data Rate to Restrict to ... kbits/s. AppleTV will accept up to 5000 kbits/s - I usually pick 4800 to be safe. Don't forget to check the size - it sometimes carries over inappropriate settings from the previous export.

  • Quicktime 10: How to resize a video before exporting it to AppleTV

I have a video (some film from TV) that I want to export to Apple TV. Unfortunately the ratio is not really 16:10. It is a little bit "distorted". So I want to change the high of the movie a little bit before I start the export. How is this possible with the new Quicktime 10 in Snow Leopard ? I remember that this was possible in older versions of Quicktime - Do I need a "Pro" version for this purposes ?
    Thanks support!

I now recognize one strange behaviour: I imported the movie into iMovie. In the preview window the movie has this black border on both the left and right side. Then I moved the movie from the events mediathek into the project mediathek on the bottom of iMovie. The preview now shows the movie without the black borders .... ?? I am now trying to export it into iTunes for AppleTV. Hopefully the borders are still not there and the ratio is correct ...

  • Problem exporting HD to AppleTv using FCE4?

So I just got my canon Vixia HV30 (NTSC) today.....
I used 30p for a test, selected All formats, all rates and HDV Apple interm Codec 1080i60 in my easy setup.
    Captured my test, no problem.
Now when I exported my sequence with Quicktime conversion>Apple TV the result was a distorted 4:3 movie (????), if I export as a Quicktime movie then I get the 16:9 of the original format. However I can not use a .mov to play on my AppleTV.
How can I import my 16:9 HD movies to my appletv?
    Thank you.
    F
BTW Are my current easysetup settings correct to get the best quality movies?

My suggestion would be to export to MPEG-4 instead. Make sure that your type is set to MP4 not MP4 (ISMA). Then set the audio to be h.264 and the size to be custom: 960*540. Set your maximum bitrate to 5000 kbits/sec. Then set your audio to be AAC @ 125 kbps.
Those should work just fine with your AppleTV

  • Export to AppleTV fra recordings in EyeTV - format?

I have recorded some TV shows in EyeTV (analog signal) and exported them to AppleTV. They are now lised in iTunes. When i stream it to AppleTV and play it on my 42" Panasonic plasma (1024*768), the picture is small and don't fit to the full screen size! Some in 4:3 format and some in 16:9, but shrinked!
Is there a solution to the above explained?
I'm not that expirienced in this subject, so don't laufh to much....;-))

    Peter
I agree with Winston that it may be the recording causing the problem.
Broadcasters can use a variety of resolutions depedning on the bandwidth available and some may be fairly low, so it's possible the native resolution is too small for AppleTV to display properly or the broadcast flags for widescreen etc are wrong or handled incorrectly by the software.
I had a problem with an Elgato Turbo 264, and e-mailed Elgato support - they were very quick to respond and keen to sort the problem out. I would fully recommend talking to Elgato support. I suspect a lot of issues stem from trying to cater for all the different standards used worldwide, and country to country differences/oddities.

  • Exporting using apple tv setting squashes picture from 16:9 to 4:3

My project is in pal uk widescreen and when I export using the appletv preset it seems to squash the picture when opened in itunes and quicktime x. When I open it in quicktime 7 it's ok.
With Quicktime x the inspector shows the dimentions as 720 x 576
with Quicktime 7 the inspector shows the dimentions as 1024 x 576 (although in the format it says 720 x 576).
Any suggestions to get it to work right in itunes so it runs correctly on the apple tv please.
    Thanks

I found that I had the same problem when exporting to IPhone/IPod. The workaround that worked for me was exporting the movie to Quicktime Movie first and then importing this file into ITunes. Here you can make a version for IPhone/AppleTV etc. that will turn out to be in the correct format. This doesn't explain the underlying problem however.

  • Export to Apple TV problem

I've searched for several days on these forums, but i am unable to come up with a good solution to this?
I have a Nikon d300s that I record video with (mjpeg at 720p 24fps) and I convert the files to AIC with Mpeg Streamclip then import them into FCE (ver 4.0.1). I want to make a few simple edits and then export the video to be played on my Apple TV. I would like the highest resolution possible with no loss of quality. When I use Export>Quicktime Conversion>AppleTV I get a movie that is 960 × 540 instead of the original 720p...A TV is supposed to support 720p at 24fps? If I try any custom settings, I always get an error when syncing with ATV (video not supported). This is driving me nuts...any thoughts?
Also curious..would FCP give me any better results (I don't see me spending that kind of money), but just wondering.

Have you tried using Handbrake to convert to AppleTV format? Take a look at this:

  • How do you show multiple products horizontally rather than vertically with the module_productfeaturelist?

I am trying to have 3 to 4 featured products that share the same tag next to each other rather than stacked.  Is there a way to do this by customizing the "List of Products by Tag" or is there another module I should be using?
What i am currently getting is this and I would like the side by side instead:
    {module_productfeaturelist,featured,3,Weight,,true}

Your monitor would need an HDMI connection to hook it to AppleTV.  AppleTV would need to be on the same network as the IMac, presumably wireless if you don't want to run cables.
You would then need to use Airplay Mirroring, and that requires reasonably modern Macs, see:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X
I don't know for certain but if you set up an automatic powerpoint slideshow you could probably export to an AppleTV compatible movie files, and then play that to AppleTV via iTunes as well, which ought to work with older Macs but video might need to be set to loop or repeat itself a lot.
If you want to use Airplay Mirroring buthave an old Mac, then AirParrot software has a demo, and some people find this ok.

  • Photo transfer to Apple TV

I transfer photos from my iMac to my first generation Apple TV.  In a folder on an external hard drive attached to the iMac, iTunes only recognizes 8 of 140 raw files with related xmp files.  If I export the raw files as jpgs it recognizes all.  Why? Any way to avoid the export step?

AppleTV 2 cannot store photos more than transiently.
With Windows you'd need to configure a photo containing folder to view using iTunes under Advanced>Choose Photos to Share (or similar menu option for Windows).
Some apps on Windows used to be able to share to AppleTV2, i'm not sure if that is still the case.

  • Turning into a Dinosaur

There was a time when Apple Computers and Software just worked. It was great to have a Mac because everything ran smoothly without ever running into any problems.
It seems to me like Apple is becoming to big, slow (not enough employees) or whatever since more and more problems are appearing since they grow again.
Maybe its time for them to fall again. I nearly hope so. Maybe this would raise the quality of their products again.
Why do I complain? And why in the iTunes Forum?
Well, first thing, Audio CDs inserted into a Mac sometimes show up in the playlist columns, sometimes not. This problem for me exists since upgrading to Leopard and since then there have been a few updates to iTunes, Leopard and QuickTime.
But the problem still is not fixed!!!
Second, burning CDs with songs from more than one album fails everytime. It even renders the CD drive unusable until you restart the computer. I noticed this problem quite some time ago. I have also seen that other people are having the same problem. But.
    It doesn't get fixed!!!
Third, maybe you know the turbo.264 encoder usb stick from Elgato. If you export movies to AppleTV they are displayed correctly when playing them in Front Row and, since the last QuickTime update, in QuickTime Player too (wow, they fixed this, hurray) but playing them in iTunes the movies are displayed distorted (wrong aspect ratio).
Elgato told me I will have to wait for an iTunes update that fixes this issue as they cannot fix this because it's Apples bug not theirs. Three iTunes updates have past.
    It didn't get fixed!!!
And one a little bit off topic. Since Leopard users are experiencing problems with their WiFi connections having to turn AirPort off and on again to get the Mac see and hook on to their networks. This is especially annoying when your computer is hooked up to a TV. I don't want to turn on the TV everytime I want to something on this computer that can be done with Screen Sharing.
However this problem exists for very long now.
    IT JUST DOESN'T GET FIXED!!!
For loyal customers you have to be loyal TO your customers. Otherwise they will sooner or later leave Apple as the company with ONCE the most loyal customers.

It looks like we all have developed "work arounds". This might be ok for a picture every now and then, but obviously is not an efficient way to go if lots of photos are involved. It also does not "solve" the interface problem that appears to exist between Adobe and our Apple programs. Does anyone know how this situation is brought to the attention of Apple developers so that they can take positive action (with Adobe if necessary) to get a real fix? Do we just hope they read our discussion board(s) or is there action that we are suppose to take to bring it to their attention? It would be a shame if all the discussion just ended here.

  • Viewing pictures with music

I recently started using Aperture v1.5.6 to edit and keep track of my photos. I used to use iPhoto. Any idea how i can create slide shows and export then to AppleTV with a specific play list associated with them?

  • Set up a "watched" folder....possible?

I'm wondering if there's a way to set up a "watched folder" for media?  Such a folder would automatically update my iTunes account with whatever readable files that were added - automatically - transparently.
    example -
    iTunes/TV Shows  >watches>   External HDD/MyTVrecordings
The thing is - Elgato EyeTV3 software can record TV shows and even export them into AppleTV format - but then they have to be physically added - one by one -  over into iTunes.
I have the same situation with an external HDD movie folder - ExternalHDD/h.264MovieFiles
Every time I add something new to it - I have to manually ADD it to iTunes to be able to access it with AppleTV and/or iOS devices.
Hoping I'm just missing something somewhere and that this function already exists.
(FWIW - For video - I always use - DESELECT/Copy files to iTunes Media Library so I'm not having storage redundancy.)
    Thanks!

I know this is kind of a dead thread now - but if you are on windows you just need to create a junction point to your music folder e.g.:
    (Windows Vista\7\8)
In C:\Users\[username]\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes, you just have to make a junction point to let's say a music folder on a external drive (e:\music):
    * Start a command prompt
    * change directory to the iTunes Watch folder
    * write: mklink /J Music E:\Music
This way itunes sees my junction point as a regular folder where all my music is in. Scans it and imports it
Be aware if you already have imported your files you will be left with dublicates.
    /Michael

  • Converting Videotape to Digital

I want to copy my wedding videotape onto my iMac using a VCR to play the tape. Is this possible?

You'll need additional equipment. Get a USB tv tuner like the EyeTV Hybrid this includes a TV adapter with RCA inputs (audio, video and s-video) where you can then hook up your VCR then convert. After digitalizing it you can export it to AppleTV or burn it to DVD using Toast. You'll need to upgrade to Toast Titanium 8.0.3 for $90 to burn it to DVD. The whole process was incredibly easy despite having to buy the upgrade to Toast.
