Exporting HD via iMovie 08

I just purchased a Canon HG20 HD video camera. I can import the "full HD" into iMovie but when I go to export the maximum resolution if gives me is 960x540.
I've done extensive research on the web and apparently you CAN export to higher resolutions if you select the "Quicktime" option, but that's not working either. The resulting movies are choppy and pixelated (possibly a setting I've missed).
Can someone point me in the direction to get full HD quality videos exported from iMovie '08? So far my videos are filmed at 1920x1080 but I can go to 720p if that's easier. I suppose it doesn't really matter unless I'm burning to BluRay anyway but still, I'd like to know!
Any help is appreciated.

your imports are internally 1920/AppleIntermediate.. when you choose 'Export Movie', iM allows only 720p/'960' as max resolution.
'Export using Quicktime' and choosing manually AIC, interlaced, current framerate and 1920x1080 should export the 'native' quality (=no pixelation)
such a mov is huge and needs 'some' computation power.. (= no stutter).
how do you watch the final output/judge final quality?

  • Exported file via FCE better than from iMovie directly

Have imported in iMovie a video 1080x1920i and exported in two different ways as follows:
    A) Directly by iMovie HD 1280x720
    B) Transferred to FCE and exported HD 1280x720
The video exported from FCE (via iMovie) is slightly better than from iMovie directly even though the resolution and settings of the formats are the same. I would like to stress that the quality difference is very s m a l l, it just seems a tiny bit clearer.
Does anybody know why this is and what I could do to get the same quality as exported from FCE???
    Thanks

Open both files using QuickTime Player and then open the Movie Inspector window.
Compare the information for each files and note the differences.

  • Exporting photos into iMovie

I import photos from my camera into iphoto as raw.
When I want to import photos into imovie they come in as raw, how can I change the format into jpeg, and still keep the raw file in iphoto?
    Thank you

    Merelyn:
Upon import into iPhoto, RAW files get a jpg version generated by iPhoto for use and editing. No editor will or can modify the original RAW file. The edits are always saved to some other format, jpg, tiff, etc. Those jpgs should be the ones that are exported/imported into iMovie for use via the Media Browser. iMovie will copy them in and resize to the size it uses. So there should not be a problem with the large RAW files.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • SONY SLT A77  AVCHD downloaded to iMac (Mountain Lion-OS 10.8.2) via iMovie. Why can't QuickTime recognize the movie?

I have a new SONY SLT A77 Camera. I did some test movies using AVCHD format and downloaded it to my iMac with MacOS 10.8.2 via iMovie '08.  When I tried to open the clip from the iMovie Events File, QuickTime 10.2 (603.6) failed to recognize the movie format. Why?

This is tricky dick!  I have my HP-6L laserjet working with my iMac!  I am using a Sabrent USB to 36-pin parallel cable.  I downloaded the glutenprint 5.2.9 driver and installed it!  The laserjet is working flawlessly!

  • Can I create a custom output settings from Compressor 4 and use it as a export setting in iMovie 10.0.4?

I'm currently using iMovie 8.0.6 However I want to upgrade by downloading iMovie 10.0.4 but I'm upset that iMovie 10.0.4 doesn't give us "Export using Quicktime" option like iMove 9.0.6 and lower versions do (look at picture below)
So I wanted to know could I create a Compressor 4 output setting and use that as a exporting option in iMovie 10.0.4?

    Yes and No:
No, you can not - as in FCPX - create your own 'Share Destinations', iM lacks (officially) any APIs too teach it new tricks.
Yes, export from with iM in a high-res format (e.g. 1080 Apple devices), and use that as source for any Compressor output Same workflow, for free, would do Mpeg Streamclip, the most recommended converter tool for MacOs....

it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • Does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack? (is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC?

does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack?  If so, is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC then to stereo?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • Best, export slideshow in iMovie, for online viewing

I tried exporting my 5min slideshow in iMovie using this setting:
    go to>share
    export using quicktime
    export as: mpeg4 settings>
    file format: mp4
    video format: h.264
    data rate: 1500 kbits/sec optimized: cd/dvd
    image size: 1280x720
    key frame: 12
    frame rate: 12
    video options>
    restrict profile to: main
    encoding mode: best
    ~
So far, this is good file size for online uploading, and good quality. Good enough. But there are still color issues, like some color blotching, and color transitioning, and the quality of the photos in the imovie when exported is not as good as when I view the slideshow in imovie. It's very important that the quality of the photos remain top quality as this for fine art photography promotion.
If you have any ideas how to export slideshows from imovie, in top quality, please reply. This is for online viewing, to be uploaded in free-hosted sites like youtube, facebook, multiply, etc. I am aware that youtube and facebook have HD options for video viewing. I need someone's help. Thanks.

Yes, I did. Not so good. The settings I mentioned above is actually the best I've tried so far.

  • Best export settings in iMovie for later import to iDVD

    Hello,
I've created a few iMovie projects that I've put on DVD using the Share To iDVD option.
I have a few different projects that I want to put on one DVD. What are the best export settings in iMovie to create files that I can later import using iDVD?
    Cheers

I would sugest using the Apple defaults - which you will get if you use SHARE/Export Movie.
It is possible to infinitely tweak the parameters by using SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME, but in my experience, you are not likely to visibly improve quality. However, you might be able to get more compression(i.e. a smaller file size) at nearly the same quality.
However, there is no harm in experimenting if you like.
You should use Movie to QuickTime Movie. Click Options. Generally, set the video codec to h.264. If space is not an issue, you can use Apple Intermediate Codec instead, but only if you are going to edit the movie some more. For a final movie, use h.264.
For frame rate, use automatic or 24 frames, but you can use fewer and see if it imporves quality.
For bit rate, you can use up to 20 Mbps, but 16Mbps is the highest I have gone, and that results in a very large file. With h.264, you can get good results with 10 or even lower. (Note: 10 Mbps = 10,000 Kbps)

  • Movie too large via imovie and no sound via idvd.

Help! I have a movie on a minidv tape that is one hour and 21 minutes long.
This is a very important tape and I dont want to delete any of it.
    I don't understand why I can't create a dvd (which can hold a 2 hour movie).
If I use idvd it captures the video but there is no sound.
If I download it via imovie, then try to create a dvd, it tells me that the movie
is too large. How can it be too large if the movie is less than 2 hours and should be able to fit on the dvd.
Can anyone help this beginner. (I just bought this g5 yesterday).

    Hi
iDVD 6 should be able to make a DVD disk with 60 min or 120 min movie +
    menu.
Can it be so that Your menu are to complex (or when added together results
    in more than 120 min)
Sounds can be tricky and iDVD can count in sounds that You thought be out-
side Your movie (stretching out after the video ended). If So re do the sound
part of Your movie and be carefull that no audio cont after the movie is ended.
In iDVD: (strang but it is like this)
Best Quality is for movies + menus more than 60 min and less than 120
Best Performances for movies + menu less than 60 min.
    Yours Bengt W

How can you keep the highest iphone 4s Video quality the same when exporting it from iMovie.

InDesign's PDF export engine does not transcode your videos, they are embedded exactly as they were in the original file. The Flash Player runtime which displays video inside PDF files may not show a perfect match to Quicktime etc. because most video playback tools aren't designed for a color-calibrated workflow, but they should be close.
The playback quality (blocking and aliasing) will be affected if the clip is not playing at 100% (screen pixels != video pixels) and in PDFs with the standard video player widget, that will only ever happen when you use 'floating window' mode. PDF pages have physical dimensions, so viewing them at "100%" does not make them match screen pixels.
If you don't mind the video clip being smaller than the media annotation in which it's playing, then use my free upgrade to the Acrobat playback widget - VideoPlayerX - which maintains 1:1 pixel scale until the page is zoomed out too far for it to fit. You can install the widget into InDesign so it's used by default when exporting.
