Exporting imovie project files from an imac to a macbook pro

I have imovie files on my imac and want to move a project files to my macbook pro and edit while traveling.  How do I simply send or share files between the two computers with imovie?

The key is to make sure the laptop is connected with a firewire cable to the other computer. It will appear on the desktop of the iMac as if it were an external harddrive. If you can see the Macbook Pro's hard drive on the desktop, you will be able to also see it within iMovie. If you don't see the Macbook Pro's hard drive in iMovie double check to make sure you have turned on 'Group Events by Disk' button in the Event browser. That's the little square button with a cartoon hard drive icon in it that sits in the upper right hand corner of the Event Library.
Once you are able to see the Macbook pro hard drive in the Event Library, drag the events onto that Hard drive icon. Same will be true for the Project Library, drag the projects onto the Macbook Pro hard drive there too.
When everything is copied, shutdown both the iMac and the laptop (you may need to hold down the power key on the laptop until it shuts off). Disconnect both macs, and startup the laptop, open iMovie. It should spend a little time 'discovering' all the new projects that have been copied to it and the Events and Project Libraries will show all the new video clips you copied.

iTunes will only import music from your phone that was purchased from the iTunes store.  To transfer music from other sources you have to use 3rd party software, such as PhoneView.

  • How should I copy my iTunes Music folder from my iMac to my Macbook Pro

I have copied the iTunes music folder from my iMac to my Macbook Pro using firewire and target disk mode. After all the files (for files read each individual song) have been copied I find that not all songs can be played. For those which will not play I get he error message "The song "bla bla" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" When I answer "locate" on this popup I'm taken to a view of finder. If I double click on the song there, the song will play on iTunes. Seems to be something to do with the structure of the folders but in get info I cannot see a difference between songs encountering this problem and those which don't.

Instead of copying only the _iTunes music folder_, copy the entire *iTunes folder.*
That's all you need to do.

  • I want to transfer all data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro. How do I do that?

My iMac's video card has died and I am told it is too old to replace.  They recommended transferring all my data from my iMac to my MacBook Pro.  They said attach a fire wire, and press "t' before the iMac starts up and then it will start in safe mode (or something like that).  But I don't know what to do next.  Can anyone help me?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you start up your iMac holding the T key, it will start up in Target Disk mode. In this mode, the iMac's hard disk appears as an external drive in your MacBook Pro, so you can access there and recover your data.
After starting in Target Disk mode, open a Finder window in the MacBook Pro and you will see the iMac's hard drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Select it, navigate through your folders and copy them to your MacBook Pro's hard drive.

Actually, I found that this album was still in the trash (Recent) and was able to restore it !!!
Ah so the question really isn't about moving albums but how to restore something you deleted by mistake from one of your libraries.
If you had actually asked that question then you probably would have gotten better and more to the point responses. In addition the need for backups would have been mentioned at some point.
You got lucky this time. Being 'more careful next time' is really not a good backup stratergy
You should take two things away from this, one ask the question that actually deals with your problem and two start a good backup program right now! Next time the trash might be empty.

  • I m trying to transfer my data from my imac to my macbook pro using transfer manager i m connected to wiifi it says that the process will take above 55 hours ? I have only 38gb to tranfere ? Why so long isnt normal

    Hi
I m trying to make a transfer to all my data from my imac to my macbook pro with wireless ... And using my transfer manager as requested but it show 55 hours time to download ? Whats wrong ?

So there are several factors that may point to why your transfer is going to take so long.  First and foremost it is going to be the type/speed of wireless you're using.  Your router and computers should all be using the same type of wifi (ie 802.11G or 802.11N).  That will ensure the best "theoretical" transfer speeds across your network.  Depending on what type of router you have and what type of wireless cards your computers have that will determine the max theoretical transfer speeds you could achieve.  For instance the fastest available wifi is currently 802.11N at approximately 300MB/S maximum transfer speed.  Realistically you'll probably see about 10% of that.
Secondly the speed of the computers and their hard drives will also play a large factor in the transfer time.  If your computer has a slower processor or uses a lot of virtual ram (which uses the hard disc drive) you will experience slower transfer speeds.
As seventy one said you will experience MUCH faster transfer speeds over ethernet.  You will especially noticie faster speeds over gigabit ethernet.  Gigabit speeds require both computers to have a gigabit ethernet port and a router with a gigabit ethernet switch.
With all of that being said depending on other variables the connection may speed up and slowdown depending on current network traffic and your transfer time may increase/decrease accordingly.  I would suspect it won't take 55 hours.

  • How can I transfer my imovie project from the imac to the macbook pro

So that way I can continue to make/edit the movie on the go. I have a 27" imac and a macbook pro that I am working with.
    Thanks

The best way would be to move it using an external hard drive. Then you have to move the hard drive between the two computers. In fact you could all the Events folders and the Project on that same hard drive too. And everything would be self contained. You would use iMovie to copy the Projects and Events onto the external hard drive (don't drag anything outside of iMovie, moving the files manually is NOT good). Then as a last step run the Consolidate Project command on that copy of the project on the External HD. That would get everything you needed into one spot.
But be aware, your iTunes and iPhoto libraries are going to still be on your iMac. So you may not have access to EVERYthing you need to put into the final project.

  • If I use Migration Assistant to transfer files a second time from my iMac to my Macbook Pro, will I end up with doubles of files on my Macbook?

I used Migration Assistant from my Time Machine for my iMac to my Macbook Pro (I'm pretty sure) when setting up my new laptop to transfer files I wanted from my desktop; now I have new files on my iMac that I'd like to transfer, and I'm wondering if Migration Assistant will send files that I already transferred to my Macbook again, thus creating doubles of files on my Macbook

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Migration Assistant creates a new account to transfer files from another Mac, so you will end with doubles of files on the MacBook.
To avoid this, you can go with the easier way: get an external drive, copy all the files you have on your iMac to the external drive, connect it to the MacBook and copy the files on the external drive to the folder you want to.
Another way is to transfer them through your network. If you have OS X Lion or Mountain Lion on both Macs and they are connected to the same network, use AirDrop to transfer your files. Simply open a Finder window on the iMac and choose AirDrop in the sidebar. Then, drag the files you want to transfer to your MacBook Pro's icon.
Finally, if you have FireWire in both Macs, you can use Target Disk mode on your iMac (hold the T key while your iMac is starting), so your MacBook Pro will detect your iMac's hard drive as an external drive and you will be able to transfer whatever you need

  • Transfer files from my IMac to new MacBook without firewire?

What is the best way to transfer files from my Imac as listed to a new MacBook. I understand there is no firewire connectivity. I would like to migrate all photos, music, and settings.

I’m sure that specific instructions come with the machine, but essentially:
Use Migration Assistant do do this. You can connect the Macs with Ethernet or even Wirelessly.

  • PDFs and Word Files open on iMac but not Macbook Pro

I own an iMac and a MacBook Pro. Recently, I've been having an issue with some PDFs and Word files that have been emailed to me from different contacts. All open—and can be seen using Quick Look—on the iMac. However, on the MacBook Pro it's a different story. When I try Quick Look all I see are the icons. When I try to open the PDFs in Preview (default app for me) I get an error message saying the file could not be opened and might be damaged. When I try to open the Word doc in Word, Pages or Bean I see all of the extraneous header information etc and the text is all mixed up in that formatting junk. I have repaired permissions, cleared out my user cache, restarted—pretty much everything I can think of. But no luck. Thought?

Brilliant suggestion! I checked all the display settings on my iMac 27" and confirmed they were the same settings as my MacBook -- until I checked the Window 7 screen resolution. Because of its size, I had expanded the screen across most of the monitor. When I changed the resolution to one suggested or configured by Windows, Approach worked fine. I've now tested it on quite a few of the settings, and as long as I let Windows determine the best resolution (on my iMac 27" it seems to be 2043 x 1276), Approach works like it should. Thank you!

  • How do I get Microsoft office from my iMac to my Macbook Pro

I have an older paid for version of Microsoft Office. I believe it is 2011? Anyhow, I got a New/used fully updated Macbook Pro and I used my Time Capsule to transfer all my data from my iMac to my laptop, but much of the music is absent, as well as my purchased apps. How do I get these over? I do not have an optical drive so it is not as easy as reinstalling.

If it's Office 2011 you can download a Trial at www.mactopia.com. You can then use your license key to make it a fully functional version.
You can also download EasyFind 4.9 and use it to locate all the relevant Microsoft and office files located elsewhere on your old drive so you can transfer them to your new one.
