Exporting imovie project for windows pc

Hi-
I created a project using imovie and exported it so I could put it on a website. It looks great on my mac but it won't play on a windows pc. I exported it by choosing "Export: to Quicktime" and "Formats:Web". It saved it as a .mov file and also created several large DV Movie files. The DV Movie files would take forever to upload to the webhosting site server but the .mov file took a few seconds. What am I doing wrong? Help! Thanks.
15" laptop G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hello-
I'm using imovie 3.0.3 The mov file is 44kb. When you call it up on a pc, it says it needs the "fade in" file and goes on to say it needs all the clip files and other fades I put in. I did see that on the older project I did a couple of years ago for the same website, the clip and fade files that were uploaded were "kb" in size, not the original "mb" sizes. There was a way to export it so the file sizes were smaller and it played on both a mac and pc...but I can't remember. Would exporting it as a "self-contained" movie do the trick? The self-contained movie I created is 1.1 GB. It will take quite a while to upload...but I wonder if that would work?

  • Best way to export iMovie project for editing

I am creating an iMovie project in iMovie 09 with a friend. I have part of the movie and he has the other part (basically I have put together a lot of the video and some transitions, and he is going to put in some music he created and add a couple of other cool things). I have created my part of the movie and I would like to send the project to him so that he can add his part to finish the movie. I am not sure what the best method is to save my iMovie project so that I can sent it to him. I don't want to export it to something he can't work with on his end.
I am thinking that if I save the project as a QuickTime movie it will allow him to open open the file in iMovie and then he can add his stuff. I was also thinking about ways of exporting to mp4 format as I know this is a format that iMovie likes, and he could open this up in iMovie. I wasn't sure, though, how to make sure I save the movie project as a mp4.
Do you all have any thoughts or suggestions on this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I don't think I have the answer, but if you don't mind I'm going to drop into your discussion because I have a similar issue and am interested in any solution someone may give you. I have a couple of iMovie project files because, like you, I have two people working seperately, and I just want to combine them as a single project.
I was able to move both projects to one computer by moving the iMovie projects to an external hard drive and then opening them both up from the same computer. That solution probably doesn't solve your issue, though.

  • Unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks. Please Help! Due date coming up!

I've unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks.I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb of RAM and 700 gb of free space on the hard drive. The video I am trying to export is 48 mins long with most of the source footage from a NIkon D3100 and several other cammcorders. I've been exporting with Apple Intermediate codec because that was the only one that has work so far but it only worked once and since then I have had to make changes to the project and now I'm unable to get it to work. For all Quicktime exports in H.264 or AIC (my prefered format for this export since I figured it'd offer the highest quality when I import it into Encore for making a dvd out of it) Which just stops exporting in the last few minutes without explination as to why or it crashes and quits. It either leaves a partial file or nothing at all. When I do "export movie" I get a "not enough memory Heap zone error"
I don't know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated!
By the way I happen to have Adobe CS6 Production Premium but didn't know how to use it as well when starting the project and now really regret not using it because it appears to be 10x more stable and capable of handling all the tasks I want it to do.

Are your event clips in h.264? If so, you can solve this by Right clicking on your Event Name and choose "Optimize Media". You can choose Full for 1080P or Large for 960P according to your preference.
After you have optimized your Event, you should be able to Share with no problem.

-108 mean you are running out of (free) RAM.
Try restarting the computer just prior to sharing. That frees up RAM.

Ok - after much cutting, trial and error and days of work I have never really established a root cause for the -108 error. Nothing I did resolved the issue to the orginal project.
The only work around I have found is to split the Original Project into two.
What I found was that anything around the 60 mins mark and above just failed to render in HD and showed the -108 error.
What worked for me was creating two project files - one around 57mins long - the other a part 2 - around 17 mins long. All using exactly the same source clips, photo's, music and transitions as the orginal.
This now works. I guess having it split in two makes it a little easier to work with as I wont have to keep rendering the first part which does not change but really wish Apple would throw some light on this.
Anyway - I hope all of the above at least proves useful for others.
    Good Luck

  • Mac Mini crashes when exporting imovie projects

    Hi.
When I try to export imovie projects, my Mac Mini crashes. Not ever, just every two or three times.
My system is 10.6.7 and imovie is 11. Can anyone help me? Thanks, I apologize for my bad English

    Thank you, I'll try!
I hope you're right, because is boring to see out of the blue all the screen getting grey and the window that invites you to reboot, without hope... It happens, for example, after two or three succesful exporting projects, then I reboot and go on for another two or three projects and then again... I'm afraid it's a RAM problem, but I'll try to update system and software.
    Thank you again

  • Need Info on exporting iMovie project to web

Does anyone have any settings suggestions on exporting an iMovie project for optimum web streaming? I have a high def video I'd like to post on a website. I'm looking for fairly good quality, but relatively quick to load. I've tried the "web streaming" quicktime export option in iMovie and am not excited about the quality. I've tried a bunch of "expert" settings, but can't find that happy medium between good resolution and moderate file size.
Any suggestions? I'd like to wind up with a video at about 480 x 270.
Also, I've heard that the H.264 codec is effective, but not a lot of browsers are able to view it. True?
    Thanks!

    Hello, jtadam,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Depending on the number of audio clips and their format, your movie may become stuttery/jerky in playback. There are several threads regarding this, the best is Karl Peterson's. Look here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=534252&tstart=150
The problem is referred to as audio stutter, but some of us find that the audio plays ok, but the video jumps. If your movie were longer, you would probably find that the audio begins to jump as well.
Sharing to quicktime is the best solution I have found. It should playback just fine. You can import it into a new imovie and if it is ok, you can delete the old one. Yes, it can be slow. For one of my complicated longer movies, it took over 6 hours. My short 16min one with only 3 short audio clips added took about 80min. So, be patient.
15 GB of free space is a minimum for working with iMovie. Try to free up 20-25. iMovie uses nondestructive editing so it can quickly gobble up GBs.
Hope this is helpful to you!

  • Fasted way to convert videos from iMovie HD for Windows?

    Hello,
I want to dub MiniDV films with iMovie HD 6.0.3 (OS X 10.4.11) for editing under Windows, e.g. with Movie Maker and/or VirtualDub.
I opened the iMovie package and converted the (native) DV files with Adobe Media Converter (Windows) into DV AVI (PAL DV) -- now I can open this film with on of the above mentioned programs.
Question: is there a shorter way to prepare the movies from iMovie/Mac for Windows?
    Thanks!
    Carlos

My plan was to make the dubbing on my second PC -- a Mac...
I don't want to interrupt my work on my PC (und because of the larger storage on my Mac).
But now I did it in my mentioned way: copying the DV files of iMovie to Windows, converting them with Adobe Media Encoder into DV PAL).
    Thanks for helping me!

  • Exporting iMovie Projects

    Hello All,
I'm hoping someone with more expertise than my poor soul can help me figure this out...........
I recorded a 90 minute play on a digital camcorder in HD (widescreen).   I imported it into iMovie.... made all the necessary edits, titles, transitions, etc.
and now want to burn it to DVD. Unfortunately, I do not have a superdrive in my computer, so when it is finished...I'll just transfer the movie to a friend's Mac and he'll burn it for me.
My question is this...... in the tests I've done so far I cannot get the widescreen format to stay.  Here is what I've done:
I exported to Quicktime 16:9 (1280x720), click the "letterbox" box, .....take that file, put it on the other computer, start new iDVD project, choose 16:9 format, but when I go to burn it squishes the picture into what looks like 4:3 format.
My next test is to export at an MPEG-4..........  but I don't know what to do.......
In the end, I'd like the final project to be where I put the DVD in the DVD player and the movie plays showing the black strips above and below the video on 4:3 TVs and giving the wide format on the newer widescreen TVs.
    Any insight is appreciated.

I've also found that xml exported from im08 doesn't make its way to FCE, I know it should be straight forward but what exactly did you do to achieve this.
I export as Final Cut XML, double-click on the exported file to open FCE, match file type in the "New Project" initialzation window that automatically opens (i.e. usually DV), go to the XML bin, double-click the sequence to open the timeline, and render the content in the timeline. Old test XMLs open with correct pointers to source data but newer test XMLs usually say the content is offline and I have to use the "Reconnect Media" option to reconnect the source files for preview to work.
Also to narrow down where my issue lies, what sort of xml file sizes do you get with im08, mine are around 4 Kb (I know they will vary but if you're getting say 400Kb that's a big difference)
My test XMLs are 4-8 KBs and are for 1-9 minute iMovie '08 projects.

  • Exporting iMovie Project using Compressor.

I've just finished a 4-hour concert video in iMovie HD 6. I wonder if I could use compressor to encode file without exporting full quality movie at first. I have not enough HDD space left. I also tried to import iMovie project file to FCP but the timeline didn't work very well.
    Thx

    Sorry for the delay..
In FCP, use File and Open, then navigate to an iMovie project and select it - which should work even though "Standard Files" is shown as the format at the bottom of the "Choose a File" window. Then FCP will say "Reading Project", and then will ask where to store this new FCP project, and it would normally go in your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
You may then get a "Media Performance Warning", which may say that the media files are not optimised for Final Cut Pro. But just click on OK, and they should load and play perfectly ..at least, mine do.
You say that you get the following error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
That might be some kind of permissions error ..but you don't say what happens next: if it's "0 access denied", that suggests that FCP does have access to the file and should open it ..but maybe it stumbles over that "1 unknown".
So tell us; what happens after you get that error message? ..Does the file open or not ..and what happens instead of it opening? And why d'you get only "..1 file(s) recognized.." if you're opening an entire project which would normally consist of several files?
You say "..when I try to import my imovie file.." ..but why are you IMPORTING rather than simply OPENING the iMovie project in FCP? FCP can read iMovie projects, so it should simply be a matter of opening the project, not exporting it from iMovie and then importing it into FCP.
Look: here's a project in iMovie..
..and here's the same project opened (with File and Open) in FCP:
All the source files are there (..in that little list at top-left..) so that the whole project plays in FCP just as it does in iMovie HD 6.
[..For a bigger, easier to see, view of these pics, click on 'Start Slideshow' on this page..]
As for "..How can I get a copy of QT6 and keep it seperate?.." erm, if you were still on OS X 10.3.9 you could 'downgrade' from QT 7 to QT 6, but I don't know how to obtain - apart from your asking someone who has it - a copy of QT 6 now that only QT 7 is downloadable ..or search amongst your original installation discs.
Maybe somebody else here knows where to find and download QT 6; but I can't think where ..sorry! (..I don't know if this old version will work for you or not, or if it would interfere with QT 7..)
NOTE: That REMOVING QT 7 may interfere with running FCP!
NOTE: That if you have QT Pro 7, then going back to QT 6 may mean that your 'Pro' key will no longer work with QT 6, and you may be left with just the QT 6 player.
..That's why I advised keeping separate versions of 7 and 6, so that FCP isn't affected by the 6 downgrade. To keep them separate, you'd leave QT 7 in your Applications folder, and put QT 6 in, say, your 'Movies' folder. I do NOT know, though, if they use the same - or different - 'preference' files (..normally stored in "com. apple.quicktime.(etcetera)" in <your User name>Library/Preferences and in other Libraries).
I suggest NOT rummaging around and changing/moving/exchanging those preference files unless you KNOW what you are doing, or are advised by a specialist like Karl.

  • How can i export imovie project in divx format?

I can't find the DIVX format in the list of the export format?
    Thanks for your help!
    Regards

    David,
may I intrude in your conversation. I am using iMovie '08, have downloaded the divx-package from DivX.com and still cannot find the option to export an iMovie project into the divx format. Do I need to have iMovie '09? Do I need to upgrade to QuickTime pro? Right now I'm exporting from iMovie to QuickTime in H.264 and convert that file in a second step into divx using the divx converter (trial version) from DivX.com. Very time consuming...
    Thanks and regards,

  • Encoding iMovie files for Windows Media Player

    iMovie 11 / 9.0
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I edit audio/video in iMovie (currently the only program I have) and need to output for streaming on the internet. Most of our subscribers are using older versions of Windows Media Player and as I understand won't be able to play MP4. I couldn't play the MP4 using Windows Media Player 9.0, "invalid format" error.
What software could I use to convert MP4 to a format for streaming on the internet that our subscribers play using WMP? Should I save the file out of iMovie in a different format to convert?
I have Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006 but my options are h.264 or flash, got error messages when I tried to "Edit Export Settings".
    Thanks

The easiest way is to upload video to YouTube and embed videos on your site from there. This way you don't have to worry about which version of Windows, which version of Internet Exlorere, etc.
Another way, ask your users to install QuickTime For Windows. Then export normally,
Another way, get one of the paid versions of Flip4Mac, and you can convert files to wmv using QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • Cannot export iMovie project - Help please

When I try to share the project I've worked on for over a week, I get the following ...
However, that event is in the iMovie library.
The only thing that happened differently this time is that I mistakenly deleted the event files from the event library before I exported the project to save disk space. But once I found out I needed the event clips in iMovie in order to share the project, I found out the clips are still in User > Movies > iMovie Events > British Isles Cruise 2013, so I imported them back into my Event Library in iMovie. So the Event and all the clips are back in iMovie, but I'm still getting the above error, as if iMovie doesn't realize the event is still there, and I cannot share or do anything with my project other than view it in iMovie.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    you haven't renamed any files/folders?
just dragged them out of the Events folder, and back, right?
    try this …
    quit iMovie
    goto Library/Preferences and trash com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    launch iMovie again ....
How do I trash the iMovie Preferences File? and Why?

  • Saving iMove projects for later edit by PC users

I've been converting a lot of VHS tapes to DVD for friends and family using iMovie and iDVD. Lately, I've been getting asked if I can simply hand over the digitized files to them for editing on their computers with their video editing software. What's the best way to save an iMovie project to disc for people with PCs (or Macs) so that they can edit and create their own DVD?

As Karsten said, the most foolproof method is to give them tape.
I don't know what kind of video files PC editing apps can import. Looking from the Mac side, a DV-stream (.dv) would be the most convenient format because iMovie can readily export it. The downside is that all scenes would be stuffed in a single file (unless the user exported each scene separately) and it would be up to the PC app/user to re-split the scenes into clips.
Another tempting format would be a DV-encoded .avi. But then you should remember that due to a bug in iMovie HD, it can't properly export it.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#expertsettings
So you should then use a workaround and use apps like MPEG Streamclip to export the iMovie project as a DV-AVI.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#imovie_3rdparty
The latest MPEG Streamclip beta has a Save as... -command which AFAIK should wrap a .dv file as DV-AVI (choose AVI from the pop-up).
...but as I said, I don't know how the PC apps handle these formats.

  • Export iMovie project to archive?

I have some projects that I have finished, and will almost definitely not need to do any more editing on.  I'd like to archive them onto an external hard drive, to clear up some space on my MBP.
I have used iMovie to archive events from the Events Library (Command-drag onto the external drive as it appears in the Events Library), but how do I export the Projects?
Can I just go into Finder, find them in the iMovies Projects folder and move them to the external drive, or do I need to do it somehow from within iMovie?
    (using OS X 10.6.7, and iMovie 11, v. 9.0.2)

Normally you would do this the other way around.
Command drag your project from within iMovie onto your external drive and you will be asked if you want to move just the project or consolidate your media by moving the events etc as well.
Your external drive shows up at the bottom of your project library listing.
Type Consolidate into iMovie Help for more information.

  • Exporting imovie project as mpeg2 file

can anyone tell me how to export an imovie project as an mpeg2 file (mpeg2 specifically, not mpeg4 or other formats that imovie offers). i'd be burning it to a cd or dvd. thanks

aha, i think this is what i must have to do. i have been asked for a 'normal' dvd of the film and mpeg2 files of it 'in case there are problems with the dvd'. so if i just open up the largest vob in the video ts file and copy that straight to a dvd it should work? how do i get to the video ts file...the film starts as soon as you put the dvd in and you never see the files...

  • Convert iMovie project for Media Player?

I need to send my iMovie project to some Windows users who only have Media Player. How do I convert my file? I cannot use MobileMe or YouTube as ultimately, the movie will need to be added to a company newsletter.

I should have said this is my first iMovie project. I am only seeing size options when I select Export Movie. I do see an option export as an mpeg when I select Export Using Quicktime. Also .avi. I'm on my work network on a different computer, so I'll see what happens when I send those formats to my work email.
I went to the ffmpeg site, but how to download the application was not clear to me. Honestly, I'm not a tech expert and all of the explanations about the package, upgrades, patches, etc. were foreign to me.
