Exporting/Importing Library

I have 2 older Macs, and just got a new IMac. I want to get rid of one of the older Macs. Can I export/import the ITunes library from one older Mac to the other older Mac, and incorporate the 2 libraries on to one of the older Macs (I have ITunes on both, with somewhat different libraries, some overlapping music). Will ITunes allow you to merge the 2 libraries? And if so, once I import the library to the 2nd computer, to the desktop, how do I accomplish this? Is it simply drag and drop into ITunes and it will know what to do, or would it be more complicated than that? Thanks for your help.

Drag the iTunes Music folder associated with the other libraries into the open iTunes window. This is an import, not a merge, and will not transfer playlists or other metadata.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

  • Exporting/importing custom library objects

    Dear,
When we made custom objects for in our library. They are available to all environments on my laptop, but not on a different machine.
Is there any way to export/import these?
    Kind regards,
    Frederik-Jan.

    Hello,
These things are stored locally on your machine.
Note: On tab Library in your LCD click right arrow to get the library menu, mark your components tab (you need to export), right arrow opens the menu where there is the "group properties..." item. Here there is a path on your harddrive. My problem is I cannot locate the path I can see here. So I have looked for a workaround.
Workaround: create a folder on your desktop. Create a component group in you Library in LCD (new tab). Go to properties of this new group, set the path to your new desktop folder. Go to the component tab where you have your custom components. Select them, use move to..., select the new component group/ desktop folder. After completing this, check the xfo files in your desktop folder. You can now send them to another machines.
Note: In the library "right-arrow-menu" there is the item "shared library location". You can use this to share the components among all the machines you need.

  • Export/Import Process in the UI for Variations Content Translation is Generating CMP Files with No XML

We have a SharePoint 2010 Publishing Website that uses variations to deliver contain to multiple languages. We are using a third-party translation company to translate publishing pages. The pages are
exported using the  export/import using the UI process described here: "http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2011/12/02/sharepoint-variations-the-complete-guide-part-16-translation-support.aspx".
Certain sub-sites are extremely content-intensive. They may contain many items in the Pages library as well as lists and other sub-sites.
For some sub-sites (not all), the exported CMP file contains no XML files. There should be a Manifest.XML, Requirements.XML, ExportSettings.XML, etc., but there are none. After renaming the CMP file
to CAB and extracting it, the only files it contains are DAT files.
The only difference I can see between the sub-sites that generate CMP files with no XML files is size. For example, there is one site that is 114 MB that produces a CMP file with no XML files. Small
sites do not have this problem. If size is the problem, then I would think the process would generate an error instead of creating a single CMP file that contains only DAT files. However, I do not know exactly what the Export/Import Process in the UI is doing.
    This leads to two questions:
    1.
Does anyone know why some CMP files, when renamed to *.CAB and extracted, would not contain the necessary XML files?
    2. Second, if exporting using the UI will not work, can I use PowerShell? I have tried the Export-SPWeb, but the Manifest.XML does not contain translatable
content. I have not found any parameters that I can use with Export-SPWeb to cause the exported CMP to be in the same format as the one produced by the Export/Import process in the UI.
As a next step, we could try developing custom code using the Publishing Service, but before doing this, I would like to understand why the Export/Import process in the UI generates a CMP that
    contains no XML files.
If no one can answer this question, I would appreciate just some general help on understanding exactly what is happening with the Export/Import Process -- that is, the one that runs when you select
the export or import option in the Site Manager drop down. Understanding what it is actually doing will help us troubleshoot why there are no XML files in certain export CMPs and assist with determining an alternate approach.
    Thanks in advance

I wanted to bump this post to see about getting some more responses to your problem. I'm running into the same problem as well. We're running a SharePoint 2010 site and are looking at adding variations now. The two subsites with the most content take a
while to generate the .cmp file (one to two minutes of the browser loading bar spinning waiting on the file). Both files are generated with a lot of .dat files but no .xml files. I was thinking like you that it must be a size issue. Not sure though. Did you
ever happen to find a solution to this problem?

  • Export/Import Project still buggy in v2.1.3

After seeing the update notes for v2.1.3 and noticing references to project importing, I started to get excited that maybe the bugs have been ironed out. Unfortunately my longstanding bug still remains.
If anyone can think of any workarounds I'd be extremely grateful...
I have a 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro with 2GB RAM, running OS X 10.5.6 and now Aperture 2.1.3
I have a project with many images, arranged into stacks, a pick in each stack with many adjustment and a 62-page book created from these picks. There are also some smart albums and a light-table.
Now I export the project (i.e. in the Project Inspector I right-click the project and choose Export > Project) to a file on the desktop and rename the existing project in Aperture. I now import the saved .approject file and I find that all my Picks are no longer Picks and my book is therefore no longer made up of my desired images. (I've tried this many times now and ruled out the possibility of a corrupt export file).
As a result, when I select the Book I get the "Non-Pick Images" dialog with the dreaded "One or more placed items are no longer the pick of a stack." message. "Use Current Pick" ruins the book - I have to go through and work out all the picks again (and also re-pan all the images within the Photo Boxes as this data has also been lost). "Create new Version" appears to preserve my book's original look, but my project now contains a couple of hundred more images than it used to and my other albums and light-table still have incorrect images shown as the Picks.
Does anybody have any ideas of what I can do to ensure the stack-picks are preserved during the export/import process?
(By the way, the reason I'm exporting and then re-importing is because I actually want to do the export from my laptop where the project is and then the import on my main work machine where the rest of my Aperture library lives, but that fails for the same reason, so I'm doing the export+import on my laptop for now to reduce the number of variables in the problem.)

I go with the assumption that you now know how to create transport sets. After having created a transport set containing the objects you want to be exported, go to the administer tab under the main page of portal. There you will find the Export/Import portlet. Here you need to choose your transport set from the first LOV and then click EDIT to choose the "Security Option". Now you export out the stuff. This will export all the user page customizations for you.
    Thanks.

  • Backing up using Export/Import & ITL, XML file formats

Using Windows XP I have reset my default Itunes folder to c:\Itunes (too big for MY Documents\...). then copied everything from c:\itunes to an external hard drive. (I didn't realize the ITL file doesn't move and therefore I may not have a good backup of it.
Starting with a new computer, installed Itunes, then did a 'File, Add folder to library (with copy option)' from the external hard drive. This restored all my songs but I lost playlists, play count & my ratings.
I then did an import from library.xml, this restored the playlists, but still no play count or ratings.
    My question is
    1) IS there a better way to backup from Hard Drive to Hard drive? (Maybe all I really needed was the ITL file also?)
    2) what is the format of the ITL file (I am a systems programmer, would appreciate a URL that has detail), what (hopefully free) utility would edit it?
    3) a high level view of the XML file (I know XML)
    4) Where is there complete documentation on Itunes ( a detailed description of export/import would be appreciated)

Here's my old standard answer for this topic - hope you can find something useful from it ...
iTunes Music Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml must stay where you found them.
To move your music files, use iTunes to do the work. Don't manually drag them around yourself.
    • change the library location in iTunes Advanced Preferences tab, the new location does not need to exist; iTunes will create it. The new location should be empty of music files. This just sets the location for any new files brought into iTunes; it does not affect any existing files in the iTunes library.
    • Select iTunes Advanced menu, Consolidate Library command. This copies all iTunes music files to the new library location. Playlist & Ratings data is preserved!
    • After it completes (assuming no errors), quit iTunes and get rid of the original files from your previous location. The xml & itl files must remain in the old location, the library location setting does not control the location of these two critical files.

  • Table Values in Export/Import/Tables RFC calls

    Hi
I know that using Adaptive RFC, the best practice is to use the Tables section of the function rather than the import/export.
However, in ECC6.0, when creating entries in the Tables section of the FM it tells me that this section is obsolete.
Should I start to use the export/import parameters instead?
    Cheers
    Ian

    Hi Ashu
Thanks for the reply but there is no code snippet.  It is a 'best practice' question.
The document <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/11c3b051-0401-0010-fe9a-9eabd9c216de">Effective Web Dynpro - Adaptive RFC</a> details that table values should not be passed in the exporting/importing parameters of the R/3 RFC enabled function module.  THey should always be added to the Tables section.
However, in ECC6.0, when adding entries into the Tables section of an R/3 function module, it says that this practice is obsolete.
Therefore, what is the current best practice for Adaptive RFC??

  • Re-importing library & Problems

    Hi all,
First time writing to the iPhoto board. How y'all doin?
    History:
I exported my original iphoto library from my ibook to an external HD (holding down the option button and since then I've bought an intel imac.
    What happened:
I've tried importing my library "File">"Import Library" (I have over 12,000 pics) to my imac but it only organized it by year 2004, 2005 and forgot my albums, their names, the way they were put and placed.
    Question:
Can I import my library from the ext. HD to my imac and have it match the external drive exactly???
btw... I have the newest iphoto (if that helps)

I exported my original iphoto library from my ibook to an external HD (holding down the option butto
Do you mean to say you copied the entire iPhoto Library folder over the the external HD via the Finder? If so, you only need to copy that folder back to the Pictures folder on your new Mac and launch iPhoto. No need to import into a new library from the folder on the HD. All you'll get that way are photos in the library, no albums, keywords, etc.

  • Import & Library handling Question!

Is it possible to do the following 100% successfully?:
    1. Import images from CF card into LR
    2. cull in another program
    3. create a new folder on hard drive &  move all RAWs to be edited into this new folder
    4. Import the choosen images to be edited into LR -  from this new folder created on the hard drive (without them being linked ot the original import library when they were uploaded from the CF card)
    5. send them out as small DNGs to editor
    6. then receive the XMP files back in LR to update the RAWs with edits by dropping the XMPs ito the new folder that was created for images to be edited and let the RAWs update
    7. save the updated RAWs that now have the edits applied from XMPs somehow (in RAW format still)
    8. move onto Photoshop (ACR) to do any last touch-ups of my own, save as JPG, submit to client.
    Thank you in advance!!!

As I said, there is no such thing as "small DNGs", maybe they mean "Lossy DNGs"? Perhaps you ought to confirm that's what they mean.
They edit my images and return them as XMP files.
Well, that's interesting. Lightroom offers no way to create XMP files from editing DNG files. Perhaps they have a plug-in or other way to do so. Technical correction ... they don't return the images as XMP files, they return the edits as XMP files
They instructed me to drag and drop the XMPs into the file folder that the RAW images are in and watch them update in LR.
This doesn't happen by itself. You would have to go into Lightroom, select the desired RAW files, and then issue the command Metadata->Read Metadata from Files
Once they are updated, they can get converted to JPG for client
Once they are updated, you can Export them as a JPG
What I want to know is, if I were to use LR to import and rename my files for me, save to one file folder on hard drive. Then cull the images manually, and create a "to be edited" fil folder - drag and drop the RAWs into that file folder.  Can I re-import the files into LR from that new folder?  ***Will LR recognize them as previously imported images linked to the orginal uploaded library, OR will LR link these reimported images to the "to be edited" folder that I created????
You are creating extra work for yourself. The idea of moving photos to a specific folder and reimporting is completely unnecessary here. Once they are in Lightroom, select the desired photos, assign a piece of metadata to those photos you want (color label, flag, keyword or whatever), and export as DNG for your editing service. No need to move the photos, and no need re-import. This takes you much less time than creating a new folder, moving the photos and reimporting.
Why are you even using Lightroom here, as you don't seem to need any of Lightroom's features. Why not use Bridge/ACR?

  • No Import Library option in iTunes 10

I just had iTunes throw the "locked library" error on me, and one solution I heard of was moving all db out of the iTunes folder and then re-importing 'iTunes Music Library.xml' into iTunes.
According to step 7 in the knowledge base article on Apple's support pages (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451) from last September, I was supposed to accomplish this simply by +7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.+
In my iTunes 10 this is not an option! I can backup, export, and organize, but not import. Wonder what the use of backup your db is when you cannot reimport it ... Any ideas on how to import the xml version of the db?

I really need to learn how to read and write some day.
I was focusing so hard on finding the option "Import Library", that I actually thought the KB article said just that in step 7. It was not until you said there was indeed such an option that I recognized the fact that it said playlist.
It did indeed work, but I still find it curious that they dumped the functionality concerning importing of +music libraries+ into the same option as the one concerning +importing of playlists+.
Anyhooow, thanks for pointing out the obvious. I actually needed it

  • Export/Import between two separate SLD's

    Hello,
We're facing the next issue. We want to move some single (custom created) Products with some single Software component versions (SWCVS) from 1 SLD (SLD1) to another SLD (SLD2) that are fysically separated. We do not want to create an export of the full CIM content of SLD1. Anybody experience with this creating exports of single products and single SWCVS. What should be the order importing these in the target SLD (SLD2).
As we are running on SLD 7.00 we also created Software units. Still the aim of these units is not completely clear to me and documentation on this is quite poor. How should we deal with production state? At what moment in a development cycle should the state be changed??
Is it possible to also export import these software unit definitions from SLD1 to SLD2?
    Thanks for your comments!!
