Exporting in Final Cut Express

I'm exporting a 63 min edited project and it's turning into a 50gig file.  What can I do to make the final file smaller?

What delivery method are you exporting for?  DVD?  Web?

  • Need help editing and exporting using Final Cut Express - why does video end up with judder?!!

I've imported material from my JVC HD Camera and have edited a 52 minute sequence on Final Cut Express. I've exported it as a Quicktime Movie and it's 43GB. How do I get this on to DVD?
I've tried using iDVD to export but as you can imagine, the quality is not great. There's a judder on it. I have no idea where to start with using applications like MPEG Streamclip to convert the clip so that when it does get on to DVD, it doesn't judder. Can anyone help? This is driving me insane!!

I've exported it as a Quicktime Movie and it's 43GB. How do I get this on to DVD?
First step - just use this export as the import into iDVD.  iDVD will take care of the necessary encoding to fit it on a DVD disk.  The file size is of no concern; the only concern is the length (in time) of the video ... iDVD can fit about 2 hours of video on single layer DVD media; about 4 hours on dual-layer DVD media.
Regarding the judder, this is not specifically an iDVD issue. Do you see the judder when you play the video  in the FCE Canvas window?

  • How do I export a final cut express movie in both PAL & NTSC formats?

I am wanting to provide both a NTSC and PAL verion of a movie onto a DVD, how can I do this using final cut express?

Ok, I have successfully converted a DV-NTSC video to DV-PAL using Nattress Standards Conversion in FCE. The resulting output file (a self-contained QT movie) verfied as PAL in QuickTime movie inspector, 720x576 at 25fps and it plays perfectly, the video looks great, and the sound is in sync.
I had to figure out a workaround for one step in the documentation (Graeme uses an FCPro feature called 'nest items' that doesn't exist in FCExpress. I got around that by manually creating a second PAL sequence instead - see below).
If you're starting with an NTSC video, the basic procedure I used is this:
1 - create a PAL sequence and place the NTSC clip in that sequence (yes, that's right)
2 - create a second PAL sequence (add the word NEST to the name so you can tell which sequence is which)
3 - nest the first PAL sequence in the second PAL sequence
4 - open the second PAL sequence (the NEST) in the viewer by Control-clicking its timeline and select +Open in Viewer+
5 - apply the G Converter filter to the NEST (which is now open in the Viewer)
6 - click the filters tab in the Viewer so you can see the G Converter filter
7 - drag the +original NTSC clip+ from the Browser to the +Source Clip well+ in the filter
8 - verify that the other G Converter settings are what you need, especially that you have checked "Nested", "High Quality" and "Source is NTSC-DV" and that the convert setting is NTSC->PAL (these are the defaults, but you should verify them anyway)
9 - render the NEST sequence ... +this may take as long or longer than the length in time of your sequence+
10 - export the NEST sequence as a self-contained QT movie ... which will now be a PAL movie
One other note, the Standards Conversion filters need to be copied to the +Library > Application Support > Final Cut Express Support > Plugins+ folder (not the Final Cut Pro Support > Plugins folder as specified in the documentation)
If you are going to try this with your project, I suggest the following:
1 - edit your movie in an NTSC sequence. After completing all your edits (when you are done editing) export it as a +self-contained QT movie+ (it will be an NTSC movie)
2 - re-import the exported NTSC movie back into FCE (it will now be your complete movie as one large clip)
3 - follow the instructions above for using the G Converter filter to create the PAL version of your movie (using the re-imported movie as the only clip you will put in the first PAL sequence, and in the Source Clip well in the converter filter.)
You can use your first export (the self-contained NTSC movie) to create your NTSC DVDs; and the second export (the self-contained PAL movie) to create your PAL DVDs.

  • How do I export a Final Cut Express 4 movie using quick time conversion without stretching the image?

I have created a movie in Final Cut Express 4 using videos and still photos of various aspect ratios and resolutions.  Some of the photos are verticals.  When I try to use File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion, my images end up being stretched horizontally when the video is finally processed.  I have tried preserving the aspect ratio but the video still ends up stretched horizontally.  What should my settings be in Quick time conversion?  I just want to make a video for YouTube.
    Thanks.  -Bob

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Does iMovie 11 have the ability to export to Final Cut Express?

I finally upgraded to Leopard, and would like to find the cheapest way to upgrade to an iMovie version that allows me to export video directly to Final Cut Express. - I believe iMovie 8 was the first to do it...(?)
Can I buy an iMovie 8? Or an iMovie 11 on it's own? Or do I have to buy they iLife suite of stuff?
    I'm currently running iMovie 5.
    Thanks,
    Craig

I just read that iLife 11 requires Snow leopard, as opposed to Leopard..
So, Can I buy a slightly older version of iMovie..?

  • IDVD problem - exporting from  Final Cut Express

I'm have a problem with my iDVD that I am not sure how to fix. I created a movie in Final Cut Express...exported and burned a DVD in iDVD. I went back to that project in Final Cut and altered it...saving a new project. Then I try to open iDVD I get this pop up message that says it can't find Sequence 1-FIN-0000002f so the moive will not play properly. Seems that it is referencing the project that I burn previously. It gives me the option to search for the file or cancel. If I search I can't find it and if I cancel I get the spinning wheel...the program will not open. I'm new to working with Final Cut so I'm not sure but somehow I deleted a file that was embedded in the the first movie I created. It appears that when I open my video drive I have a Render File folder, in this folder are folders for all the projects I have created. I can locate the last project folder and see all the sequence files (all named like the one that was missing....Sequence1-FIN-0000002f) I just am not sure how I would have erased one of these rendered files. Is there a way for me to recreate a rendered file with this file name so the iDVD will recongize it or bypass this in iDVD so I can just open it and create something new? Any suggestion on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.....

Keep in mind you are working with QT Reference files. These files reference the movie files within your video editing app. If you opt to burn a DVD and then go back and alter these same ref. files then you confuse iDvd which normally requires that you delete the encoded assets and start again so iDvd can again recognize what you want in terms of a finished iDvd. Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Exporting with Final Cut Express 4 & iDVD

    Hi,
I have just got final cut express and have created a test project. How do you go about getting it into iDVD? I was about to export the project using "Quicktime conversion" but I am unsure what type of file to export it as. It is to go on a DVD.

    Hi Tom,
My project was filmed & edited in widescreen, when I export it using the method you describe here it doesn't output it in widescreen. How can I export it for best quality in widescreen for idvd? thanks

  • .flv export from Final Cut Express

I alternate between two machines when doing video
editing/compression. Both machines, Mac G5's, have Final Cut
Express HD and Flash 8 Pro installed. One machine offers me the
option to export as .flv and the other does not. How do I "install"
the option to export as .flv on the machine that is not currently
    not offering me that option?
    Thanks in advance.

well what i am doing is i need the actual flash program and
not photoshop, because i made a functional cartoon version of my
friend. and in the video he is going to be fighting a cartoon of
    himself!
its going to look really cool, once i figure out the little
kinks. its weird because i have done a project like this before. in
2005 i did a similar project incorporating cartoon drawings with
video, although it was done in macromedia flash mx. i simply
imported the video and it worked fine! i drew over it in another
layer, exported and i was done.
for some reason, on the new flash CS3, it doesnt seem to be
working properly. im pretty sure my older stuff i was importing
.mov as well, although even when i import a small 6 second .mov
into cs3, its still slow... why do they have this feature? it
doesnt work properly i dont understand..there must be some way..
well, i set the flash project for 29.97 prior to importing. i
then tried importing a simple 5 second video. i did the embedded
swf on timeline so i could see it up there. then after loading, i
saw that it still wasnt right. whats happening is its just running
slow in the flash program, making it look like slow motion. i
looked at the fps, and even though it was set to 29.97, it was
jumping all over, as it was playing. while the video was playing,
it was roughly around 20fps jumping to 22fps and going around
    there.
i dont know? any suggestions? thankyou

  • Exporting to final cut express

Just bought final cut express. When I "open" the i move file. It doubles the soundtrack up, meaning there are two versions of it, right on top of eachother.
    Any help?

These are your left and right channels which FCE allows you to edit (unless you are saying you have four tracks of audio?).

  • Exporting in Final Cut Express HD: screen size distorted

A couple months ago I finished a production in Express HD and the export worked great. I've since made edits to the original files, but now can't get either the old or the new to export properly. It appears to squish the screen narrower and taller, which makes people look wide. I think I have the size settings right. Here are details:
The frame size of my session is 720 x 480. I've been exporting using Quicktime Conversion with the following video settings:
H.264 compression; frame rate: current; keyframes: automatic; frame reordering: yes; data rate: automatic; multipass on; size settings: NTSC 720 x 480 4:3.
I've tried variations on that -- including changing the size to 640 x 480, just to see if I could get it to work, but no: the screen still appears to compress in from the sides.
(I searched around this forum for half an hour and couldn't find an answer, and apologize if it exists elsewhere. If so, can someone direct me to that thread. If not ... pls help! Many thanks.)

    Hi, Jerry.
I wish I could say the problem was fixed.
I put up some images on my blog that I hope will help with diagnosis: http://www.wormlips.com/blog/?p=282
Here's where I am now: I downloaded FCP Rescue but realized it works only with FC Pro, not Express. So I manually deleted my fcp preferences (I hope it was okay to do it that way) and restarted the computer.
Then I tried Quicktime Conversion with "current settings" and the result was still seriously wonky (see blog). Further, it changed its own mind about how big the screen size was: 640 x 480 or 320 x 440. And as you remember, the actual size as I exported it successfully a couple months ago was 720 x 480 (DV/NTSC).
Might it help to re-install FC Express?
    Thanks!
    -Ginna

  • Exporting from Final Cut Express HD (3.5) to Quicktime 7.6

I have a video compose of stills and some video. Some of the stills have movement and others do not. Also to the 12min video I have added Nattress special effects so the video can look "film like"
After the video is done I ended up exporting it to QTPro by using QT conversion, otherwise I will loose the 16.9 as I want to save it in HD 16.9 format. Once the video has been uploaded unto QT, the moving pictures are pixelated and they look distorted? I am not sure why? Is there anything I can do so this won't happen? Or maybe QT is the problem? I want moving pictures, but I want them flawless as they move across the screen. There has got to be a way of doing this, any ideas?
Also on another post I read about a codec (ffmpegX) I tried to download it, but since its old it seems that I need components and when I tried to download them I get screens full of UNIX codes but no download options??
Is there other codecs I could use so I can export this video and be CLEAR AND CRISP ON A HD format? or what do I need to do different in QT?
    Thanks

The data rate is huge. For example the rate for an iPod is 0.7 mbps (700 kbps) and yours is thus 46 times higher than that. The exported version is for who? For just watching? The bitrate could be no higher than 1.5mbps (1500k/sec) for H264 and would look great even on TV.
I find exporting in Quicktime is confusing for people, knowing settings and the like - try MPEG Streamclip - it will open QT files and has presets for exporting the MPEG-4 (H.264) particularly for Apple iDevices and is a lot easier to use and costs $0.00. YOu can set framerates (e.g. 24 not 29.97) and they stick.

  • Exporting for Final cut Express

Hi Everyone, I use a 3d animation program called kinemac (any other users here?) ... I want to export the quicktime file into FCE 4. However, it gives me too many choices. It allows me to choose the height/width of the export file. What should I choose for standard definition? Also, the program permits me to select motion blur. Any idea what this refers to? Thanks!

I'm the U.S., so it's NTSC -- but as for format, just generic SD

  • Exporting with Final Cut Express

Wish you a very happy New Year!
I was wondering about the best way to export a movie from FCE for uploading to the Internet. I have just finished editing a DVCam movie in FCE, which is just over 10 minutes. It's a documentary and there aren't m/any effects, except some sound level adjustment. I want to upload this to MySpace, which gives you a maximum limit of 500 MB per video. I have exported it to QuickTime, but its size is too big, 1.1 GB. How can I export it of best quality as possible under 500 MB, so it looks good on MySpace?
I will appreciate if anyone can help me with step by step instructions.
    Karl

I would ordinarily suggest MPEG4/H.264 but I've heard that DIVX or FLV may give you the best combination of file size & quality on MySpace. MPEG Streamclip and FFMPEGX can do the DIVX encoding. MPEG Streamclip can do DIVX and FLV (with the Perian plugin). Regardless, you might consider exporting to QuickTime Movie and then use MPEG Streamclip to convert it instead of using FCE to do the conversion during export. The MPEG Streamclip engine is pretty good.
I've also heard that QTPro + Perian can convert FLV but I haven't tried it myself. There are a bunch of MOV-FLV converters out there.
