Exporting is too slow - FCP 7
Hi,
Problem:
I don't know why rendering and exporting are too slow, even when i woke up this morning and found my video exported it couldn't open.
I'm trying to export a 10min footage.
It tells me it needs 35 - 40 min to export and after 30min. the time remaining is still the same (30min).
after a few hours of exporting, the video does not open/play.
Technical Settings:
I converted my footage to ProRess (HQ), the sequence settings are set to ProRess (HQ) too.
the material in the sequence and the sequence settings are exactly the same.
Additional Info.
I tried exporting to my machine instead of a hard drive to check if the problem is from the hard drive, but still exporting at the same speed (too slow).
I've been editing for 10yrs. and never faced this problem.
my machine is an iMac. OS X, Version 10.6.8, Processor 2.66GHz i5, Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Thanks,
Omar
And here are some other troubleshooting tips
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2591
Are you running any other programs at the same time? If so, quit them and see if that makes a difference.
Also what are your sources? Prores(HQ) may be way overkill.

Export is too slow using @sid
Experts please tell why it is taking too much time using @sid?
I have read this in orafaq
http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/71979/2/
Is this database on the same server as you are doing the export? Exporting using a TNS entry is very slow, even if it is on the same server. Can you export directly from the database server? If it's on the same server, set your ORACLE_SID first and then leave the TNS entry off.when i do export with @xe its taking 35 minutes
But if I ran same export without @xe it takes 1 minutes
db version is

Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Product
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE 10.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.1.0 - ProductionNo.
What matters is you are using the TCP protocol, a routable protocol, when you use tnsnames.ora
When you set Oracle_sid, you use the IPC/BEQ protocol, a non-routable protocol, communicating using Interprocess communication between your session and the dedicated server process.
A difference of a factor 5 is quite normal.

LR2 64-bit Web Export running too slow
The Web Export process is not using any of the processing power available to it on my computer. It uses only about 8% of the processor and the disk activity is not that high. It runs fast at first then slows down.
The only thing that is slow is the web previews. I canceled them and then just have tried creating the website. Still just not wanting to use the CPU, or much disk, or even change its memory consumption.
Here's a dir listing of the process
10/02/2008 05:55 PM 57,872 _MG_5132.jpg

10/02/2008 05:57 PM 50,906 _MG_5137.jpg
Taking 20 seconds to make some real low quality JPEGs. During most of that time no CPU is in use. The highest I've seen LR use was 15% for about a second.
Its like the program is waiting for something then finally it happens. The computer is running just fine otherwise. All other modules work at expected speed.
The beginning of the process does use CPU. Its just the part where its rendering the photos that dead slow. -

I am experiencing FCP running too slow, finding it hard to edit footage.
You are not the first to see this slow down.. But often by deleting render files can solve this slow down or restart the computer. I know this should not be so, but untill Apple make some fixes there is little to ad. You are actually doing everything right. And I assume you are using better formance not high quality.

Cannot export to MPG2 from FCP 5.0.3
Hey,
Finally getting ready to burn my project to DVD using DVDSP. When I go to export to MPG2 however, it isn't listed as an option in my available codecs. There is:
MPEG IMX 8-bit PAL - 50 Mvb/s - 48 kHz
or
MPEG 4
Then under custom, there is another few MPGs that go something like this:
MPEG IMX 525/60 (30Mb/s)
MPEG IMX 525/60 (40Mb/s)
MPEG IMX 525/60 (50Mb/s)
I also opened Quicktime and see that there is no codec there either to encode to DVDSP compatible format.
Needless to say Compressor has never worked, unless the appearance of an error message reading, "Cannot submit batch, cannot connect to background process" is the new definition of working. I've tried all the workarounds for Compressor that have appeared over the last 4 months or so.
I don't really want to export as DV-PAL or whatever and then import into DVDSP cos that will be two lots of compression and I'm assuming it won't come out too good.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Crazyooooh boy... that's not good news for me... I have totally given up on Compressor. I have reinstalled too many times to count along with various other fixes such as a sudo command in terminal, and disconnecting all firewire/ethernet cables. (Although even if it did work, it wouldn't be much use to me without Firewire cos that's where all my captured video is).
SOme guy on the Compressor board though was saying he doesn't use Compressor cos it's too slow. He exports directly out of FCP somehow? Can I import a sequence into DVDSP?... probably not.
This is insane... all those $$$ down the dunny cos I can't even get my project to DVD!!

Hello all! I've been using GarageBand for a while now and I've accumulated quite a few files. Along with all of my movies and iTunes library, my internal hard drive filled up rapidly and I didn't catch it. I received a warning message on my screen one day saying that my hard drive was nearly full and I only had a few MB available. I'm using a 150 GB Solid State Hard Disk on my 2009 MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz Intel Cre 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM). I remembered reading a while back that it's better to use an external hard drive for pretty much everything when using Garageband, so I bought one. I now have a seagate 500 GB, 5400 rpm external (USB 2.0) and I moved ALL of my movies and music over to it. I freed up around 60 GB of space on my internal hard drive in doing so.
So now that I've given you a little background, let me explain the issue I'm having. Before I noticed that my hard drive was full, I started receiving this error message:
Disk is too slow. (Prepare)
(-10001)
Upon receiving this message, I was unable to do pretty much anything in GarageBand. I couldn't listen to tracks, export to iTunes, or do anything! All I'm using GarageBand for is editing. My band and I do all our recording (and mixing) offsite at a separate studio and i just deliver a 2 track stereo signal (L/R) to my MacBook. From there, I just cut the individual tracks from a block of 30-45 minutes of recording because we just record our entire studio session and mix everything there. I pretty much never have more than two tracks and a few effects going at the same time.
After I realized that my disk was nearly full, I consulted my brother-in-law. He's head of the IT Deartpment at a major hospital here in West L.A. and he told me that I may have created a problem with the cache by filling up my internal hard drive and that I may still have issues with performance even after I free up space. He then told me that I may need to reboot my MacBook a few time to "free up the cache" (or something close to that, sorry guys I'm not that tech-savvy). It seems he may have been right, as I'm still experiencing the same issue. I rebooted around 10 times overall to no avail. I'm still using my internal hard drive to store the files that I'm working on (temporarily) because USB 2.0 is way too slow for my liking, when using GarageBand.
I've read quite a few articles on this offering solutions such as:
1. Do a complete Uninstall and Reinstall of GarageBand
2. Clone my hard drive to my external, format it, and reinstall everything back on it
3. Get a hard drive that supports Firewire 800 (The HDD I bought is USB 2.0, but it has two USB cables to increase speed, but I only have 1 port and I tried a powered USB Hub, but this HDD won't work with it for some reason).
4. Use different editing software.
5. Take it to Apple!
Will any of these things fix my problem? Are some better than others? Before I do anything, I wanted to ask this question on the furum to see if anybody had an easier (or cheaper!) solution. Any suggestions, tips, or advice would be much appreciated, as my band is starting to get on my case about finishing our CD! Thanks...Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.
cheers

Logic Freezes During Playback w/ Disk Too Slow Error
I'm trying to mix a song in Logic 9.1.7, but it has gotten to the point where Logic immediately freezes as soon as I hit the playback button in order to actually listen to my project. Before this I was occasionally getting the Sudden Motion Sensor/ Disk Too Slow error. I have increased the buffer size to 1024 and set the buffer range to large. I haven even disabled the sudden motion sensor, just incase this was the problem. I am currently using a Macbook Pro which is not connected to the interface, so this shouldn't be a problem. However, I use a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface. The only third party plug-in that I am currently running on the project is the Focusrite Plug-in Suite - which I think might be the issue, considering that my other laptop is runing the same plug-in and having the exact same error. I already tried downloading every relevant software patch and update from the Focusrite website, all to no avail. I have been running Logic along with this plug-in, for over 2 years now and have never once had this problem. I haven't had any problem running Pro Tools, so obviously this problem is specific to Logic. This is incredibly frustrating, and I need this resolved soon. I have a deadline that I must meet by the end of the week.
Update: I just tried running Logic in 64-bit mode. It played for maybe a second and then gave me an error indicating that the plug-in suite was indeed keeping it from running properly. Guess I was right. It will play properly now, but contantly pops up with errors, not to mention that the HD and CPU meters are both constantly riding the red. I will put the most recent 64-bit error report log before the first one I got. I recieved the first one while still running 32-bit.

Lightroom 2.4 Is Too Slow To Use As A Professional Product
Hello -
I would like to know how to get Lightroom to respond in less than 4-8 seconds for almost any task.
From returning to Grid mode (4.5 seconds) to adjusting a routine crop and angle (5-7 seconds per move, 60-90 seconds total) to simply shift-selecting three to fifty photos (4-9 seconds) no matter what I do in Lightroom, it is worse that Photoshop 1.0 on a Mac Plus. Really.
Returning to Lightroom from another app - 7 seconds.
Getting the menus to drop down - 4 seconds.
My lightroom settings:
standard preview size: 1680
Quality: High
Discard 1:1: Never
write changes to XMP: off
Catalog: 127 mb on F drive (24 gig free)
Catalog: 13.5k photos, 95 gig on F drive
Cache: 6 gig on F drive
NVIDIA settings: performance over quality
My computer:
HP 8730 elitebook
4 gig ram
XP Pro, SP2
Proc: Core 2 Duo T9400, 2666 MHz (10 x 267)
DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
Chipset: Cantiga PM45
Video: NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M (1024 MB)
(2x) 250 gig 7200 rmp HD
Before anyone says to export to a new catalog and re-import, etc, use a smaller catalog, etc, be advised that I have done all of that. I have imported only 250 images to a new catalog, on a newly installed OS, with Lightroom as the ONLY application. Still it acts this sluggish.
I have scoured the boards for solutions, and having tried all the varied fixes to no avail, I really quite strongly feel that a person should not EVER be in the position or running some of the most powerful available hardware and STILL have to wait interminable seconds for Lightroom to respond.
This software, as it stands now on the PC platform (unless I am missing something quite obvous) is absolutely unusable in its present state.
Can someone from Adobe or a board guru please respond in kind to my request for help?Photo_op8 wrote:

I'd have to agree with the subject of this 100%, even though I'm not experiencing anywhere near the levels of lag ellsworth is on any of my primary workhorses.

1st-Gen MacPro (Dual Twin-Core 3Ghz, 3x, 10k-RPM 150GB Raptor RAID-0, partitioned to System/Scratch/Files (in that order) 16GB RAM...blah blah (about 2.2 years old)
3 week old MacPro 2x2.66 Quad-Core MacPro, 16GB RAM, Multiple Partitioned (System/Scratch/Files) Internal 4x-1.5TB RAID-0, 4x 1.5TB eSATA RAID-0, 2x NVIDIA GT 120's, 30" NEC 3090WQXi, 26" LaCie 526, 24" Apple LED Display
OS 10.5.8 on all machines.
Let me repeat-
Partitioning ONE drive to contain system files, application, cache, catalog and photos=SLOW.
It really doesn't matter that the drive is 7200 or 10k rpm if ALL items reside on the same drive. The MacPro has four bays. One drive for system and catalog, second for cache, third for photos=FAST.
Wow, I'm glad you repeated that, and used capitalized text so that I would be sure to understand.
Clearly, the benchmarks I have off of the various evolutions of my last 3, $10k computers must be in error. (single system disk, RAID-0 system disk, 10k RPM system disk, RAID-0 3x -10K rpm system disks, multiple scratch volumes on different drives, singular scratch volumes on RAIDed drives, tested via benchmark programs and application specific batch tests, etc.etc.)
More importantly as an issue of forum protocol, you didn't actually read my post.
Brad Kaye wrote:
I partition about 10% of the outside of a drive as separate and put the information I need to get to most quickly which tends to be the system folder then scratch disk in a another separate partition and then I leave the rest on that drive as gobs of 'B' space for media and other crap files, reserving the first 10%-30% of the outside of a different drive (or RAID-0 sets) for my files and Lightroom catalogs.
I'm throwing 370 mb/sec between two individual sets of 4 drive RAID-0 sets. Single 7200rpm drives sling about 80 mb/sec. My drive arrangement isn't the reason Lightroom IS TOO SLOW TO USE AS A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT.
Also, since I referenced and linked the former software engineer turned photo FREAK in my post, whose blog I started reading last year corroborating the decisions I've made in my previous system setups with immaculate documentation and testing procedure your response even more seems like the entire reason I rarely bother posting in community forums. You seem to be here to spout, not to contribute and learn.
Take a look at all of the info contained here: (I've already read it, all of it, and more)
Diglloyd Mac Performance Guide
and if you still think I'm wrong, lets have an informed debate about it. Really.
Otherwise, lets please keep this topic moving forward with the issues Adobe needs to address next to make Lightroom a better product for professional photographers, and specifically, help out ellsworth999 who started this topic, who seems to have a big helping of problems on his plate. I can't speak to him directly of his problems since I'm not using the Windows version of the software. -
EXPDP is too slow even though the value of cursor_sharing changed to EXACT.
Hi
We are having a 10g standarad edition database (10.2.0.4) on Solaris 5 which is RAC with ASM. Infact we are planning to migrate it to LINUX x86-64 and to 11.2.0.3. The database size is around 1.3 TB. We are planning to go with an expdp backup and impdp to new server and new version database.

As per the plan I started the expdp. But unfortunately the processing of tables even continued for one and half days and the backup didnt started also. After going through few docs I found that the CURSOR_SHARING should be EXACT to make the expdp more faster (Previously it was SIMILAR). So I changed the parameter to EXACT in one of the node and started the backup again yesterday night on the same node where I change the parameter. When today I came back still the processing going on. I checked the job status and found that the table processing is still going. It is not hanged at all. But its too slow.
What could be the reason. Here is the memory details and kernal parameter details.

Do I need to make changes above of these. The dump is taking to local file system.Hi,
I'd be looking at doing this in parallel over a database link and completely miss out sending anything to nfs - it will make the whole process quicker (you effectively skip the export part and everything is an import into the new instance).
I ran a 600GB impdp in this way over a db link and it maybe took 12 hours (can't remember exactly) - a lot of that time is index build in the new database so make sure your pga etc is set up correctky for that.
LOB data massively slows down datapump so that could be the issue here also. You should be able to acheive the whole process in less than a day (if you have no lobs...)
Cheers,
Harry -
I recently got a nice MacPro 8-core computer with 16 Megs of RAM and an NVIDIA video card.
Nice huh?
I though so too, until I opened the Activity Manager and saw that even during Export and rendering from FCP, the 8 processors were barely be taxed. And I looked at the memory usage and it said it had 10 GB free.
*Do I have a machine that will not perform the way I thought?* I called tech support, and the very ill educated person, told me that it should be fine. I then got transferred to a FCP “specialist.” After waiting on hold for over an hour, I was told that he only knew about “installation” and surface level issues. WHAT YOUR DEFINITION OF SPECIALIST?
He gave me a very similar unhelpful answer.
I am a faithful Mac user. And since my severe stroke at the age of only 37, my whole business life now revolves around my Mac.
I feel like the dual-pro G5, which I replaced, may have been doing just fine. FCP doesn’t seem to be running any faster. And I am onlining a national TV show that is graphics-heavy.
We are living on disability, and we took out a special loan just to buy this computer. (10.8M+) The job I have now may bring us up a little, financially, but right now it doesn’t look too promising.
DID I OVER BUY?
Was my $3000 G5 just as good as my $11,000 MacPro?
If there is some way of speeding I up, I would appreciate a call. Soon.
If not, what are my alternatives. I’ve only had the machine for a couple weeks.
Here’s another quandary—I exported a video from FCP and the “info” says it took only 12 minutes. I re-exported it because by first attempt clipped the first few seconds, so I included the video-only seconds. Now the batch monitor is saying that the export will take 90 minutes. HOW COULD THAT BE?
Frustrated,
DanHi dnucks,
It is clear how you feel and the frustration you are in!
We will try to help but in order to do that we need to ask questions, be patient!
An 8-core MacPro with 16GB (not MB) of RAM should definitely be a top configuration.
Do you have an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT? Are you using only FCP or Motion as well? Are you using FCP6 or earlier versions?
Are you using externl drives or separate internal drives for your media, renders etc.? Which ones , give specs including type of connection!
Did you get your extra RAM from Apple or you added some cheaper ones by yourself?

My Dual 1.8 G5 too slow on color performances
I send my FCP project to color but unfortunately my dual 1.8 with 3.5 ram, nvidia 6600 open gl won't perform at its best. I know for color application XT1900 is recommended but please the base recommended specs showed that i did have the baseline requirements.
Any idea how to get my dual 1.8 go a little bit faster. adding more ram or what? Tried to put color FX into 20 secs clip takes 30 to 1 mins. Wow its way too slow though. Try to play the clip also takes more secs to mins to runs. I'm wondering why this happen and it should can go just a bit faster. Any help/advice much appreciatedOh ya i knew it. I owned this PMG5 since it first released and planning to buy the best and good one but not affordable. I love this machine but future technology is highly in demand. I just updated the graphic card from its original to the latest i have and pretty much can go to started the color app but way to far to execute a full project. Eager to buy the Mac Pro but have wait though. huh huh!
Runs benchmark for nvidia GeFOrce 6600 and scored at 5326 - 400FPS. Not that i know, just did some test and open few applications simultoneously with color but got frustrated because its hang for a mins to runs on every apps.
Thank you for your opinion and obviously my machine is going to obsolete in the near future. It can go for small graphic applications and final cut pro but FCP seems to slow either, render clips for 1 - 2 mins with transitions and fx would go for 30 mins to 40 mins. Harghhhh! i must get the new one! -
Disk Drives Too Slow??
I have a RAID drive that's capable of playing back 10-bit uncompressed video perfectly fine. Now in my Soundtrack Pro Project file, i have JUST 1 audio file in it. It plays back fine for a few seconds before a window pops up saying my drives are too slow. Any idea what's going on?
I can play the file in final cut pro perfectly fine.
P.S. How do I set the level for an individual clip to a specific level? In FCP I can bring the level up/down by typing in whatever number i choose. Any such functionality in Soundtrack Pro or am I stuck with the slider?this is a major issue that apparently is "being looked at."
for 5 months now. no fix.
there are a bunch of threads that discuss this. search for "choking" or something like that. -
"Disk too slow or System Overload" ... hardly
Hi all!
I hung onto my 2007 MacPro until just before summer when I upgraded to be on the safe side. I do orchestral work and have been accustomed to running heavy VSL projects on one single machine pretty effortlessly. On my new 12 MacPro, things are working even smootherEXCEPT for this "Disk too slow or System Overload" happening from time to time on fades. The projects in hich I experience this behaviour are audio only, orchestral mixes of between 60 and 70 audio tracks and I get the message when executing fades on all tracks simultaneously. I can't remember getting this on my old MacPro which had a fraction of the cpu-power and not nearly as much ram.
My specs are 2x2.66 6-Core w/32GB ram, and all audio files, fade files and othe project files, are written to two 2 TB 7200 disks in the internal disk slots, configured as striped RAID. This gives more than enough speed and I still have 1,64 TB of free space on the RAID set.
This issue comes and goes and I can't seem to figure out what triggers Logic's problem to read fades fast enough. Just now I had some corrupted fade ailes, rebuildt them and now Logic can't get past the fades at all unless I start playing in the middle of them.
I can't understand why this problem should be introduced on a configuration much, much faster than my previous MacPro where this problem hardly ever occured. I even doubled the I/O buffer from 512 that I was using on my old mac, to 1024 with no difference at all. Increasing Process buffer size to "Large" doesn't have any affet either.
Any clues anyone?
Best regards,
GingeGood point, nice link!
But the thing is I'm not using any software instruments and apart from one EQ on a track here and there, two Tube tech plugs and two sends to Altiverb (of which one is inactive). This kind of load was not a problem on the old heap and shouldn't be a challenge for a 12-core... Also, without changing anything apart from the move above, it is now playing with only one pixel-high movement on the meter, like you would expect it to do.
BTW the quirk is now back on the project that was fixed. I did new fades at another position and CPU 1 is now maxing out again. A new set of fades means equal fades on regions on 63 tracks playing simultaneously.
As I'm writing I'm becoming aware of one interesting aspect: the project files contains imported aaf data and to save space I'm leaving the media-files at the original location where it was put by Pyramix who exported the aaf. I figure there shouldn't be a difference if the audio files reside in a folder called "Media files" or "Audio files". These folders are sitting on the same disk albeit not in the same subfolder. If anything, I'd assume it would minimize potential for error caused by having several copies of files with identically names on different locations on the disks. But now it seems the issue is less likely to appear if I save the project including assets, copying external audio files (on any disk), or at least that is how it looks like right now. New fades are working fine after I've done this.
Doesn't make sense to me but it seems to make a difference...

CoreAudio: Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010)
I keep getting this error when I'm playing a song that has 16 tracks and effects on each track, but each track is frozen (!): CoreAudio: Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010). I'm running a G4 and have 2G RAM. Is this common? What can I do to prevent this? Thanks for any advice you can give!
-DavidIn addition to Rohan's suggestions you have more options depending on how you work and what phases of the project you are in.
Something overlooked very often is polyphony enabled for the EXS24-some patches are set to 64 drop the polyphony to either the minimum you will need or less (if less you will notice older notes cutting out-but you can set it to the necessary number upon bounce or export). Some mono patches from sound designers are set to 32 or 64-even if you enable unison this is often worthless.
Up your buffer size-I usually have my PBook at 512-I usually do offline editing, location recording and sound design with the book anyways.
Export the track.
Set virtual memory in EXS prefs to 'on' and with the largest RAM allocation-slow disk, lots of activity.
If you use certain exs patches often but only parts of them trimming the excess off the instrument can improve performance. If you have a piano program with good samples you can initially create a lite version with 2 velocity layers and then when it is time to get things sounding good revert the instrument to the original 5 layer-obviously this makes a huge difference depending on what you are using the piano for, leave it if it is critical.
Save the Channel strip and export as audio file while keeping the sequence in your session. Like Freezing but you can manually trim the file start position and set the bit depth. Freeze files render from the start until the last audible sample and then truncate the tails, meaning even if you can't hear it it is still pulling "silence" from disk as long as there is sound after it. Exporting as 24 or 16 bit will effectively reduce your file size by 25 (24bit) or 50 (16bit) percent. If you know you don't have to edit a performance for weeks to come exporting it will solve alot of problems for CPU.
Someone should back me up on this one but at the moment I want to say EXSamples load into memory regardless of freeze settings-reducing your resources.
Disable the filter (if live or playback-N/A with Freeze)-it is often not critical for some patches. The more synthetic sounds or sounds with fewer/shorter samples rely on them.
Disable Unison.
Most sample libraries were not recorded at 88/96k-there is no benefit in running them in sessions in these Sampling rates as far as the EXS sound quality goes.
That should keep you busy for a while, just some tuning to up your system performance.
