Exporting is very slow

Hi,
I bought a refurbed MacBook Pro from Apple Store, (incl apple care)
2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
I was told that I could extend the Ram to 4 Gig Ram but I would not get the full performance from the 4 Gig Ram, but it would be better than the 2 I had and better than extending to 3 Gig Ram.
I bought the Ram from Crucial.com
Didn't really notice much difference in edit, but I was recently away on a job where we had to export our time lines to QuickTime - Broadband Medium, which a graphic on top of our work.
Each timeline was about 1-2mins long.
My exports where taking between 5-7mins where as collegues where exporting in half the time.
My computer in general had been slow so I reinstalled, first MacBook Pro discs, then OSX 10.5 did all the upgrades, then installed FCP latest version, did the updates.
Still slow!
Is this a ram thing or just a slow computer?
Will Mac replace it if it is slow?
Lastly, I can't find my apple care receipt, but I know I registered the mac online, where do I find where it is registered?
Please help. I have another job starting next week, same sort of gig. We have to provide a lot of content for the web and I am slowing down the work flow.
Many thanks,
Jamie
PS One last thought, could it be the external drive the work is stored on. G-Raid drive connected to FW 800. I doubt it?

Jamie.
For what its worth, the 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo model of the MacBook Pro did not support 4 GB of RAM. It would only support 3, but even with the mismatched pair, performance wasn't improved that much. So the 2.33GHz model will work best with 2GB of RAM.
You would also do well to answer these gentlemen's exact questions if you want specific answers to your issue. These guys are professionals offering free advice on their own time, they're asking these questions for a reason. You'll notice in my signature that I use the same model MacBook Pro, and it works very well with FCP. I don't think you have a bad machine, you just need to take some time and learn some basics here.
Cheers.

  • Export is very slow

    Hi,
We have created a new database.
    The db version is 9.2.0.4
It is available on Sun Solaris V890 and OS is Solaris 9.
In general the performance is very good, but ONLY export is taking too much time. setting direct and buffer parameters didn't help.
Could you please let me know whether anything else needs to be done?.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Try FastReader from wisdomforce for export/import large Oracle tables. FastReader extracts it into flat file with high performance and creates automatically input for sql loader

  • Exporting is VERY slow in LR 4.4 on MacPro

    Hi,
I use LR 4.4 on a MacPro with tons of memory and space.
This week I deleted ALOT of images and saved the catalog upon quitting.
Today photos are exporting SUPER slow so I cleared all caches on my mac and re-started, yet slow export persists.  Also emptied the cache which has 20 GB set.
Any ideas what else I can do to speed up exporting?
Maybe there is another cache or preference to delete?
    thanks so much, Teri

Thanks so much DJ, appreciate your kind help!
I never optimize but am doing so now… however system is saying I optimized yesterday, when I backed-up upon quitting.
Does the optimization happen as part of the catalog back-up upon quitting?
Yes,  the slow to export images had a lot of gradated filters and brush strokes as I did some retouching… sounds like this retouching work can slow down the export?
thanks again for shedding some light on this!

  • Export time very slow.

Hi guys, i-v read some thems on the forum, but I am not an english speaking person, so it's kind of hard for me to receive a lot of information in a diffrent language at the same time. So I would like to create a new theme, where you probably will be able to help me.
I am using Adobe Premiere CS 6. I have an HP DV7 laptom with the folowwing configuration:
    Windows 7 ultimate 64
Intel core I7-3820QM CPU, 2.70 Ghz
    8 GB RAM
    internal HDD drives 5400 Rpm
    Video adapter:
    1. Intel (R) HD Graphics 4000
    2. Nvidia GeForce GT 650M with unabled CUDA (I mean in Premiere it's shown as unabled)
The premiere is installed on disc C, the info is on Disk D (different HDD from C).
I shoot on an Canon 7D camera full HD 1080x1920, 25 fps. Sequence is the same as camera shooting h264 format.
    When I export i select MPEG2 movie, 1920x080, 25 fps, 30 bitrate.
1 hour clip is then exported in about 4-5 hours, what seems extremly long for me...

Thank you, is there a way to fasten the rendering and export time? What should I look for upgrading my laptop?

  • Export to text file very, very slow

Hi, I am running 2.1.0.63 and doing an export of a query to a text file. The export was 66000 rows, but took incredibly almost around 2 hours to finish. The row counter in the status bar was very slow. The same exact query/export under 1.5.4 ran in about 5 mins. The row counter on both the fetching and exporting was just flying by.
Has anybody else experienced this ? What could be causing it to run that slow under this release ?
The other issue I have is once there has been no activity for a while, sqldeveloper hangs has to be restarted. I saw this being addressed in another post however, and will follow it there.
Any ideas on when a patch will be made available to this release ?
BTW, I really like some of the other new features of this release.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Ok, I think the issue was that I was exporting to a shared network drive. I redid it, saving it locally and it worked fine.
I still have the issue of inactivity and having to restart sqldeveloper.
    Thanks.

  • Flash export very slow

    Hello!
I did some captures (242 slides) but when I export the slides
to a Flash file, and when I read this file, it is very slow! For
instance, I can't see the animations completely, and the mouse
    movements are jerky.
I tried to watch the project on a more powerful computer, but
it's also very slow. Is my project too big? (98,8 Mo and 8,95 Mo
    for the Flash file).
What can I do? I already resized it to 640x480. I still have
to add some audio commentaries and I fear it might slow the project
    again. Thanks for your help!

    Hello ameloche35,
Whilst it would be impossible for me analyze this without
taking look at your source Captivate 2 file, I would suggest that
    you take a look at
    Exporting
your Adobe Captivate 2 to Flash article. I have to be honest
and say that having 242 slides won't help. I would try looking for
any redundant or slides you can get rid of and see if that makes
    any difference.
Tip: In Adobe Captivate 2 you can remove all unused items by
showing the Library panel, clicking on the select unused items
button on the Library tool bar and then clicking the delete button.

    Mark

  • CS6 After Effects PNG export very slow - Not Multi-Threaded?

I am rendering an after effects project consisting of over 320,000 source frames of 4000x4000 resolution, outputting over 250,000 frames as PNG files.
Rendering is instant on our machines, all time is spent "compressing and writing" frames. It is taking forever.
We have several machines that are all windows 7, with 16 physical cores, 64GB ram, connected to a 4Gbit SAN.
I did some experimenting, tried using all 16 cores, or 8 cores, or disabled multi-frame rendering even. When this project is rendering my cpu usage is almost non existent,. maybe 1%-5%  at times.
with 16 frames at a time being rendered it is averaging between 1 and 7 seconds per frame depending on the content of the frame.
Does Adobe have any plans to multi-thread the PNG exporter? or is there a faster 3rd party plugin out there i could use? It is very slow and doesn't tax the CPU's at all. Even on a single core it doesnt even use 100% cpu while its saving.
I even tried loading one of the frames into photoshop and simpy hit save as a PNG and it took almost 15 seconds to compress and save. I did it again without compression and it saved the 40MB raw file instantly.
That is terrible performance for machines like mine that are pretty much the fastest things out there.
    Thanks!

I appreciate your attempt for a workaround solution, however as you well know you can't render to a video file from multiple machines. we must output directly to individual frames, I setup 8 machines to work on this project, if we did not use compression then we would be writing over 300MB/sec of data which would not be good for our fibre network which unfortunatly is only 4Gbit. And it would be about 10TB of data total.
As for your workaround Im not sure we could gain speed with your method either way. spending the extra time to encode to a lossless format and then process again in AME sounds like it would take even more time, unless AME could create PNG files at some sort of ridiculous speed maxxing out every core at 100% or something to compress the PNG's. Out of curiosity I will throw some frames at AME and see how long it takes to compress and how much cpu it will use.
    thanks

  • Suddenly very slow export

Hi.  Basically, my export has gone very slow.  I will give what details I can, but the main thing here is that I am doing what I have always done, but suddenly it is going very slow.  I export to MPEG2 DVD as that goes straight onto a DVD without further render in my Sony DVD maker program.  Export in Premiere usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes. Latyest project is warning me of over 3 hours!  I thought I would ask here before waiting and seeing if it still works okay in case there is an obvious answer.  MPEG audio, multiplexer on, maximum mrender depth, CBR slider set to make a file that will be as large to preserve quality and still fit on a DVD (I go for around 4GB or just over)  Stick to CBR as the estimated file size is more accurate than messing about with VBR sliders.  Projects are standard definition, two video sources mixed (full DV) and separate sound source added and synchronised.  I film stage plays with two cameras.  Projects typically between one and a half and two and a half hours long.  This project is actually at the lower end.  No other obvious problems with the PC in general.  Is it worth a system restore?  It was fine for a project similar size rendered last week.  I am asking befoire i try system restore as they are getting hard to do.  They never seem to work unless I remove all my virus protection stuff!  CAn I think of anything different about this project?  Well, only that the venue I was filming in was not quite level, resulting in a bit of an angle that I corrected by tilting the film just a few degrees.  (Only affecting the part of the picture that would be off the TV screen) just to make the stage look level.  I often do this with a few shots from one of the cameras, but maybe not the whole film for both cameras like in this case.  I even tried pressing enter and doing that render thingy before export.  That did not help.  Maybe that is just to get something better in the preview window.  Normally it just takes around half an hour or just over.  Media player can be a bit crackly and choppy playing the rendered movie, but then it is always fine on the DVD so I just put that down to windows media playing being a bit rubbish and not important in my case.  Sorry if I have neglected to tell you anything important.  I usually get told off for this on this forum, but I have tried to give you details about the settings I am using.  The main thing is that I am only doing what I usually do.  If I was exporting to a different format I might expect a different time.  I can tell you that I got bored waiting and cancelled a few times before coming on here.  A couple of times the screen went very white and said windows would close the problemn and notify me of any solution.  Program closed but no useful information (I would not really have expected Windows to give me any!).  Maybe someone here can?   I suppose I had better wait for the three hours or more and at least see what comes out, but cant help being scared it will freeze at 37.34 percent and I will give up after waiting three weeks!  But any suggestions would be helpful.  Sorry not very tech-savvy so please keep it to plain English.  Thanks in advance

Without knowing your computer specs, hard to comment on how long an export ought to take. However, you said yourself that you may have applied rotation to much of the video, and perhaps that is slowing things down from normal.
Please check that your hard drives are defragged and are not getting more than 70-80% full as performance can quickly degrade. I would turn OFF the "Max Bit Depth" and "Max Render Quality" if being used. Should not be needed for DV clips going to DVD. As for pre-rendering the timeline, not recommended. This just adds another layer of compression (quality loss) to the final render, IF you check "Use Previews" in the Export area. If not using Previews, then it is all getting re-rendered anyways, so just a waste of time and drive space really, unless playback is so terrible that you want to render a section to check the results before exporting.
I notice you have MultiPlexing ON for the export - is that how the Sony DVD software wants it? Most authoring programs (like Encore) perform better with separate elements of audio and video, meaning the .wav and .m2v files. Reason being that the DVD program will usually be creating Dolby (AC3) audio for the final DVD, so if you feed it the raw elements, it can convert the .wav to .ac3 quickly, and will NOT need to transcode the video. If you Mux (combine) the audio and video, the audio has then been compressed to lossy MPEG audio, then the DVD software needs to separate the audio and video and re-encode them again in most cases. Not the best workflow. Unless your final DVD uses MPEG audio, but I'm not sure that is a legal part of the spec worldwide, is normally PCM or AC3 for player compatibility.
Not a big fan of anti-virus programs, have found many of the popular ones to really take over and bog down the system. Personally, I use and recommend the free solution of Microsoft Security Essentials. My computer, and those of my kids, have been virus-free the last couple of years since going to that solution, and I see no decrrease in performance and it runs in the background totally transparent to me.

  • Importing and exporting from cc premiere pro is very slow

importing and exporting from cc premiere pro is very slow, the system has i7 processor and memory is 64 gb and has internal raid storage. what could be the issue.

If you would like to test the tuning and setup of your Premiere installation go to our Premiere Pro BenchMark PPBM, the Instructions page has the download file.  This single download can test Premiere 6, 7 or 8 with the identical benchmark.  We maybe able to tell you why you are having problems.

  • Export very slow

Exporting photos as JPG at 300 pixels per inch has become very slow.
    I using Lightroom V1.1, Windows XP home SP2, P4 3GHz, 1GB ram, 300 GB SATA with 115 GB free.
It has taken 1 hour to export 130 JPG files converted from a 6.1 mega pixel camera raw file. I think it use to be much faster. My library contains 12266 photos (JPG, TIFF, and Raw).
I've recently added more disks to my computer. I'm looking into disk defragmentation and anti-virus software to see if these are contributing to the problem. I'm using McAfee Virus Scan and anti-spy ware 8.5i (enterprise).
Also note that my export directory is a sub-directory of my main photo directory which is c:\photos.
I also check some previous exports from earlier this year. It took 10 minutes to export 112 photos similar in nature (raw to jpg).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi all. When pressed play and make some changes in loop (eg fade in fade out) are very slow to implement, and also the loops from the library are very slow to play, corrects the somewhat self so is the Logic??

hi all. When pressed play and make some changes in loop (eg fade in fade out) are very slow to implement, and also the loops from the library are very slow to play, corrects the somewhat self so is the Logic??

    Hey there Logic Pro21,
It sounds like you are seeing some odd performance issues with Logic Pro X. I recommend these troubleshooting steps specifically from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening:
    Logic Pro X: Troubleshooting basics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5859
Verify that your computer meets the system requirements for Logic Pro X
See Logic Pro X Technical Specifications.
Test using the computer's built-in audio hardware
If you use external audio hardware, try setting Logic Pro X to use the built-in audio hardware on your computer. Choose Logic Pro X > Preferences > Audio from the main menu and click the Devices tab. Choose the built in audio hardware from the Input Device and Output Device pop-up menus. If the issue is resolved using built-in audio, refer to the manufacturer of your audio interface.
Start Logic with a different project template
Sometimes project files can become damaged, causing unexpected behavior in Logic. If you use a template, damage to the template can cause unexpected results with any project subsequently created from it. To create a completely fresh project choose File > New from Template and select Empty Project in the template selector window. Test to see if the issue is resolved in the new project.
Sometimes, issues with the data in a project can be repaired. Open an affected project and open the Project Information window with the Project Information key command. Click Reorganize Memory to attempt to repair the project. When you reorganize memory, the current project is checked for any signs of damage, structural problems, and unused blocks. If any unused blocks are found, you will be able to remove these, and repair the project. Project memory is also reorganized automatically after saving or opening a project.
    Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
    Restart the computer.
Isolate an issue by using another user account
For more information see Isolating an issue by using another user account.
    Reinstall Logic Pro X
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Logic Pro X. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application, then reinstall Logic Pro X. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Logic Pro X. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Logic Pro X.
In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
Locate the Logic Pro X application and drag it to the trash.
    Open the Mac App Store
Click the Purchases button in the Mac App Store toolbar.
Sign in to the Mac App Store using the Apple ID you first used to purchase Logic Pro X.
Look for Logic Pro X in the list of purchased applications in the App Store. If you don't see Logic Pro X in the list, make sure it's not hidden. See Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases for more information.
Click Install to download and install Logic Pro X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Mid-2010 27" iMac very slow, even after clean OS install - HELP!

Good afternoon guys, I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I bought my Mid-2010 27" iMac in May-ish 2011. Everything was brilliant, I couldn't believe the ease of use, and especially the start up speed, coming from a world of PCs. My iMac was used almost every day, for web browsing, photo editing, etc.
Maybe about April / May this year it started becoming very slow, slow to boot, slow to respond to mouse clicks, slow to do anything. Since I'd used about 750GB of my HDD (mainly photos), I decided I would archive some and hope that would ease the congestion. As my photos were stored in Aperture, it took about 3 days to export them all to my external HDD, 3 days of the iMac only getting so far, switching itself off, then me finally getting it to come back on (I was getting messages about Kernals, etc. now and again through boot too) - it finally backed up my photos I have from my daughters first year.
Great news, but I still had probably 400GB / 500GB of photos from her second year and any other photos I'd taken. I found the root of my Aperture directory, and managed to pull these images off, so everything is now backed up.
I decided I should try and clean install, and managed to get the HDD to boot and choose the option to re-install from Apple's Servers. All installed OK, and we're good to go! Fired up the iMac, and although it's fractionally quicker to respond, and a lot more stable, it's not quite right. And I've lost all my iLife Apps which originally came with the iMac.
Does this sound like a HDD issue? As I say, it was on quite a lot through the backup procedure, and I had set it (maybe stupidly looking back now) to never sleep, and for the monitor to only switch off after 3 hours. Or does it sound like something more is wrong with it?
I am quite confident of working with PCs, so would manage to replace the HDD I think, looking at some videos, etc. online. I did upgrade the RAM to 16GB, and that was simple enough. My question is, when you replace the HDD, how does it know where to look to the Apple Servers for the clean OS install? Or do I have to do something to let it know where to look first? I have to point out I don't have any Time Machine backup, etc. as the iMac was just not stable enough to get this in place - and up until that point, again probably stupid now looking back, I had never bothered to set up.
Any help / advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. At the moment I have totally fallen out of love with the iMac, for something to cost £1,500+ and only last 3 years, where my last build PC lasted Approx 8 years for half the price, is very disappointing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Col

Just suggesting things right off the bat here-
To me it sounds as though the HDD is failing, if your iMac shipped with a Seagate drive try entering your serial number to see if Apple will replace it:http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac-harddrive/
Or try running Apple Hardware Test a few times back to see if it is a hardware error.
As for the iLife apps they should've come on one of the install discs that shipped with your mac.
If your iMac is ineligible for the program above I would consider replacing it yourself with either an SSD or HDD, as for recognising apples servers for download, you will need the original install discs that came with your computer or if you haven't already it will need a firmware update to enable internet recovery
See here:Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
    Good Luck!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Import from Catalog *very* slow performance.

Importing from a second catalog from a shoot is *very* slow with the last version or couple of versions of Lightroom.  It's been about 20 minutes and the import is moving glacially slow and is only about 20% done.
Here are as many stats as I have:
iMac 27" 3.5Ghz Core i7, 32G of ram, 3T fusion drive (the late 2013 model maxed out)
Master catalog has 117,000 images in it.
The catalog I'm importing has 948 images in it.
CPU use during the import is 100% used by lightroom (note that the multiple CPUs can go to more than 100% so this means I think that one CPU is maxed out, though LR can sometimes take 500% of my CPUs during an export)
Lightroom is using 4.2G of RAM (10G free in activity monitor)
Hard drive is fairly full, but still has 366G free on it (so about 10%)
Lightroom Mobile sync is enabled (not on this folder I don't think) but says "service unavailable" at this point.
Lightroom is fully up to date (5.5) on both iMac and laptop (also a mac in case that matters).  Both are up to date with the latest OS software.
    How I did it was:
Export the shoot as a new catalog on my iMac
Transfer it to my laptop (smart previews only, no masters)
    Edit images, metadata, etc
Transfer the entire folder back (.lrcat, previews, smart previews) to iMac
In my master catalog do an import from catalog
Waited for ages for checking for dupes (which I can understand with such a big catalog)
Selected to import all, changing metadata and develop edits, and selecting to put new images in the folder (not sure why it asked as there weren't any new images)
The last time I did an import I started it and then went out somewhere so I didn't notice how long it took, but this seems completely crazy.  In the time it's taken to write this up it's now about 20 minutes later and the progress bar is maybe at the 33% range.  It's still working away, it's just crazy crazy slow.
Anything to help out or debug would be greatly appreciated.  I suspect it's pure size of the catalog, but 120k isn't outside the realm of what I've heard people say works fine, or maybe the Fusion drive (maybe the OS is trying to move files around behind the scenes)?
Either way this didn't seem to be an issue until the last couple of versions (I haven't gone and re-installed 5.4 or 5.3 to check) and it's starting to really frustrate me

    Hi Jim,
Great suggestion! It opens perfectly fine on its own. I even went as far as re-exporting it once it loaded but am still experiencing the same issue. That same catalog loads perfectly fine on my assistant's iMac.
I can't really think about anything that changed in my environment with the exception of a new Bootcamp partition to run windows on an external Thunderbolt HD but I doubt this is related.
I'm open to any suggestions while I am trying this again... 10 minutes of 'Checking for changed and duplicate photos'.
