Exporting keywords and comments?

Is there a way to export keywords, or comments?
Basically my iPhoto library is getting too big and running slow, so what I want to do is move all of the "older" photos onto an external drive and be able to find the pics using a spotlight search, but not keeping them in iPhoto.
Thanks,
"D"

Dana:
Spotlight can find keyworded images in an iPhoto library located on an external HD. One way to do what you want is what Lori suggested, copy your library to the external, open it and delete those photos you plan on keeping on the boot drive library. Then open your boot drive library and delete those that are in the external drive library. To make it easier you can create a new keyword for those destined to the external drive.
The paid version of iPhoto Library Manager will let you easily move between your multiple libraries and copy single or multiple files from one to another while keeping the keywords and other information intact. iPhoto Buddy is another application that lets you quickly change libraries but does not have the file copy capability. For best results turn off ownership on the external drive by selecting it, typing Command-I and then find the ownership part of the Info window where you can click on the "ignore ownership" checkbox.

  • Acrobat X and XI - SharePoint Integration - Not Supporting SharePoint Fields Keywords and Comments

    Hi there,
Only a limited number of our staff have access to Acrobat, but they all have access to Acrobat Reader X.
When users use ‘Save As’ to save PDF files directly to a SharePoint 2007 Document Library, they are correctly requested to complete SharePoint meta-data, following selecting the appropriate Content Type.
All of the required meta-data is present with the exception of SharePoint’s built-in Columns ‘Keywords’ and ‘Comments’ (both multi-line text Columns).
All of the Columns which we have defined are present, including multi-line text Columns.
‘Keywords’ is a required Column for all of our documents and hence users cannot check-in their PDF documents.
I know of others who have experienced this problem, and testing at home confirms that the problem also presents with SharePoint 2010.
I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Acrobat and Acrobat Reader XI. Alas, the issue remains.
    Thank you,

    Hi mchagar <http://forums.adobe.com/people/mchagar> ,
    Thanks for your reply!!
Because we have tens of thousands of existing items and documents which use SharePoint’s default Keywords, and many document libraries, we are keen to wait for an Adobe solution.
We are aware that we could create an additional column and copy Keywords to the new column. It is simply a large amount of work in a Corporate Environment, for no reason.
Hopefully Adobe will improve their products to include support for built-in SharePoint fields.
    We’ll wait a bit longer.

  • Keywords and comments from Canon Zoom Browser EX

My digital camera is a Canon Power Shot S2 IS. Before buying PS Elements 6, I organized photos using the Canon-supplied software, Zoom Browser EX. Many of the photos have keywords and comments using the Zoom Browser formats.
Is it possible to get these keywords and comments attached to the photos once they are in PS Elements 6? Have any of you folks successfully done this? I've looked in the usual help locations, but so far I have not been able to do this. PhotoShop Elements does not seem to know how to look into the Zoombrowser metadata or thumbnail files that go with the Jpeg picture files in each folder.
    I use Windows XP.

    Dennis,
A quick Web search finds other people asking the same question. The various postings suggest that the Canon Zoombrowser probably stores keywords and captions in a properietary format, rather than in the industry standard metadata sections of the photos themselves (the "EXIF" data) that most other programs, including PSE 6, use. So you may be out of luck.
For example, see this Lightroom thread on the same topic:

  • IPhoto keywords and comments are gone

I just bought the new iMac G5 (iSight) to replace my G4. Before I sold the G4, copied my 6000-picture iPhoto folder to the G5 using a Firewire cable. I then used the Migration Assistant to do the transfer from the G4 to the G5, again using a Firewire cable. Them I sold the G4. When I first launched iPhoto, it was empty. I then relaunched iPhoto while pressing the Option key. I told iPhoto where my album was. It worked, but none of the keywords or comments made it through the transfer. Everytime I imported a picture, I give it some keywords (e.g. Christmas, 2005, etc.) and some comments. But all this is now gone. Any solution to me predicament would be appreciated!
    Daniel

    Daniel,
Is your short user name the same on the new G5 as it was on the G4?
Well, check the permissions on the iPhoto Library folder just to make sure permissions are set for your user name on the G5.
    Highlight the iPhoto Library folder
    Hit command I
In the next window make sure you are the owner and have Read/Write permissions. Hit the button at the bottom of the window.
Also a rebuild might help....or not.
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

What's solution is the safe way. Because of when I used "Content and Structure" and then copy/or/move to New POST, All of Enterprise Keywords, Categories and All comments are lost.

  • Problems with Importing / Exporting Keywords and Meta Datas

    Hi to all!
I recently upgraded to Aperture 3 and upgraded my referenced library.
Today I opened the Keyword HUD and noticed some keywords splattered in my list, which seem to be any older ones, since the new numbering indicated that they are not applied to any pictures.
    So I deleted them.
Than I noticed the <Imported Keywords> folder, opened it, and it contained also a large number of previous keywords. Also they seemed not to be in use, so I also removed them.
Than I locked the Keyword HUD.
Now my question: If I export a version, with the option for 'include metadata' ticked, and edit the version than in Photoshop, and after it, import it back into the Aperture library I do have the problem.
I have tried 'Import Meta Datas' and and click 'Append'. Than it is recognizing the former keywords, which I would appreciate, but not as 'Imported Keywords'.
If I would open the file w/ the External Editor and return it back, I guess I would not have this problem. Usually I do open the referenced RAW file, and import than the edited version back into Aperture. Keywords are stored in the Library, so I would not avail the former given keywords than, is that right?
By the way are the keywords part of Meta Datas or not?
    Are there any workarounds?
And had other people also problems with their keyword list after upgrading?
Thank for any ideas / infos!

  • CS4-Exporting Keywords and other image data

I've been spending quite a bit of time going through my very large image library assigning keywords, filters etc to the images and am surprised to find there doesn't seem to be any file I can backup to preserve all this data.
Next month I will be buying a new Windows 7 system and am hoping all this time I've put in will not be wasted when I transfer CS4 to the new system.
Is all the data (keywords, filters etc) somehow embedded into the images themselves or do I need to back up a file?
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
    pg

    Pg,
Here is my experience with Bridge in its various guises.
I started with Photoshop 5 entering metadata into my digital collection.  I then progressed to PS 6 and 7.  Up to this point I had to do it all by hand.
After purchasing the full CS2 package I fell into love with Bridge as I could now setup templates.  When managing tens of thousands of files templates made my job a whole lot easier.  Bridge CS2 had no problems reading the metadata from my Photoshop files with metadata embedded.
After earlier this year upgrading to CS4 I had no problem viewing and manipulating my metadata.  Since the information is embedded in the photos themselves it does not matter what viewer you use.  That being said I find it disheartening that Win XP does not recognize my metadata.  I suspect that Windows creates cart files to store its info in.  Or perhaps in a file within its structure.
So go ahead and upgrade.  As long as your metadata is embedded in the file itself you should have no problem.  Unless I was just lucky.

  • Keywords, Titles, and Comments don't travel - Sharing Pics with my PC

What gives with iPhoto. Love it. Problem though. All the work I've put into adding key words, titles, and comments are only good in iPhoto.
Why is this? Wouldn't those things be considered metadata and be stored in the file and then travel with that file?
So... here's the kicker. If iPhoto doesn't do this - I probably need to switch programs. My house and family and work are all PC environments. We all swap photos pretty regularly.
I look like I suck if my photos are all titled DSC-09874. This especially ***** if I know I've spent hours upon hours applying tagging pics with keywords and comments - only to find out I'm the only person to ever see them.
I need some direction here from some iphoto gurus. What should I do?

There is a program that will do it but it's a bit expensive for just that feature, iView MediaPro. However, you can use it is its 21 day demo mode do write the keywords and comments of the photos you have today back to the original files (not the modified but the original). Tutorial #1 describes how to do that.
I suggest you post that as a feature request at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. The more requests for that the better.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Keywords and Spotlight

Is there a way to have the keywords you assign to photos show up in spotlight?
I know that the ones I create in Photoshop do, just not iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    "D"

    Dana,
I can search in Spotlight for keywords I give my photos. Yours should be working too. You might have to close iPhoto after assigning the keywords to get it going. Spotlight can find my images by image name, title, keywords, and comments and even Albums (I put the album name in each images comment field)
Sometimes you have to force Spotlight to work by highlighting your library in the source column, select all, and give them a simple keyword (I use the checkmark) Wait till it is done assigning the keywords, then close iPhoto.
Open iPhoto, undo what you just did. Now see if Spotlight can search by keyword.

  • Exporting Mark-Ups and Comments from a PDF file

    Hello,
I know there are several options for exporting comments associated with highlighted text in Adobe Acrobat Standard, but is there a way to export both the comment AND the marked up text all together?
    Thank you.

The built-in Summarize Comments tool in Acrobat only uses the text in the comment itself, so if you've made a bunch of comments without enabling the setting mentioned above, you're screwed... Well, almost.
I've developed a tool that allows you to retroactively copy the highlighted text back into the comment, while preserving any comments you might have made yourself.
    See here: http://try67.blogspot.com/2011/04/acrobat-retroactively-copy-selected.html

  • Script to Export and Import Keywords and Metadata

I have a requirement to mass upload and download keywords and various metadata fields (i.e. File Name, Date Created, City, Country, Document, Title, etc.) into an external database from the Adobe Bridge. Ideally it would be compatible to .txt, .csv, etc type of database format. Currently I have to accomplish this task one at a time. I have an immediate need to upload 1000 plus pictures and various text fields into my website to share with others and be able to sell my pictures online.
My immediate is for exporting the metadata and keywords.
Does anyone know of a script that is aavailable?
    Arnold

    John,
Thanks for your quick response. Below is the script I just modified this morning. When looking in the keyword field, it returns the word "undefined" for all records.
I tried that yesterday and it didn't work. When looking at the Advance file info on Adobe Bridge I see the below format which had 2 levels. All the others I used only had one. Since I am not a programmer, I need help on that part of the script.

  • How to export ranking and keywords from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
I like to edit RAWs in Aperture but still want to keep iPhoto for JPGs, sharing and slidshows... However, I cannot get the keywords and rankings from Aperture into iPhoto. The JPGs have other Metadata attached to them, but not the ones that matter the most here - ranking and keywords. Subtitles for example are also missing in the exported picture.
I tried various ways of exporting/importing the pictures (of course "including metadata"), but did not yet succeed. I did expect these two applications to get along more smoothly, however there must be a way to do this, right? Please let me know!

    Redgo,
I can't answer your specific question, but I too like to use iPhoto for slideshows.
I don't do this by sharing the libraries or having duplicate copies. In Aperture, I make an album with the pictures for my slideshow. Then in iPhoto, I grab that album from Aperture and make an iPhoto slideshow from that. It uses the previews, but medium-res previews are fine for a slideshow. It wouldn't be so good for printing (but I imagine you'd use Aperture to do that).
Just my 2 cents about an alternate workflow.

  • Aperture 3: How to export website containing legend, keywords and rating?

    Hello,
I've been testing Aperture 3 (v3.3.2) and I wish I could export a website that contains both legend, keywords as well as ratings.
The current tag options do not allow rating to show up at the same time as legend and keywords.
    Thanks.

You can define your own metadata presets to be used with the web pages and smart webpages, for example:
I definea a Metadata preset "PhotoCaptions" by setting the Metadata drop-down menu in the "Info" panel to "Edit". In the Edit panel I enabled keywords and ratings, and then I cpould use this preset in my webpage. As you can see above, the ratings and the keywords do show.

  • Exporting photos and metadat from iPhoto '09 to Lightroom 3

After several years managing 110K+ photos and movies in iPhoto, I am reluctantly considering moving to Adobe Lightroom. I paid $200 for Aperture, but the most recent releases of both Aperture and iPhoto are so buggy that I'm not upgrading. I was very sad to reach this conclusion.
I am seriously considering moving to Adobe Lightroom for its power, stability, and availability on much cheaper PC hardware. Does anyone know of a way to export everything I've done in iPhoto (including hundreds of hours of tagging and photo editing) to Lightroom? I've spent a couple of hours reading forums and haven't seen anything (instructions or app) that will do the job.
I really wish Apple had nailed Aperture since I'm now needing it's photo editing power together with iPhoto's excellent organization capabilities. This was the promise of Aperture 3. Now I just feel dumb for spending the $200 (since the app is both buggy and available for $80 in the app store).
I would deeply appreciate any advice on the transition to Lightroom 3 from iPhoto '09... and I will always be an Apple fan.

    Terence,
You rock for posting such a quick reply so late at night. Thank you!
I forgot about those checkboxes. Excellent point. Thanks for the description heads up. I'm fine losing the faces info (esp. since LR3 doesn't offer it as you said). It's the keywords and titles that I've spent 100's of hours on
Have you tried importing to LR with exported metadata? Did it work end to end for you? I'll check out iPhoto to Disk in depth.
I would like to keep my originals and the modified versions. Do you know of any way to avoid doubling the item count in my library to nearly a quarter of a million? I am hoping to avoid having an original and modified version of each file. I actually suffered that once through an iPhoto issue a couple of years ago and hope not to repeat.
To add more context to my Aperture and iPhoto '11 comments, the iPhoto '11 comments are purely a reflection of what I've read in hours of forum reading and not my direct experience. On Aperture, my experiences are actually limited -- focusing solely on importing a huge iPhoto library to Aperture. I spent tens of hours over several weeks trying to migrate and simply failed. The memory leaks got me time and again, no matter how I reconfigured the import (for example by splitting 110K photos into approx 50 individual imports). I should've called out that once (partially) imported, everything seemed to be faster and smoother in Aperture than in iPhoto. Thanks for the call out.
