Exporting larger .mov files

I've read that using standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) projects, iDVD can only handle 15 mins or 7.5 mins of video respectively in drop zones. I know that this is probably a dumb question but how else can I get a larger video onto a disk?
Thanks

Thank you. That's very helpful. I have a couple of follow-up questions if I may. A 2 hour video would obviously be a very large file. Would this have to be exported from FCE in a compressed form to burn a DVD? If so, which format? Also, when I export from FCE using "Quicktime movie" fully contained, I end up with two .mov files: one wiht the Quicktime logo and another with a clip from the film on the thumbnail. The latter is what I have been using. Thanks again!

Is a 2 minute exported avchd mov file supposed to be as large as 1gb? There aren't even any edits or changes done to the original video! What am I doing wrong?
I'm using Quicktime Conversion; Compression H.264. How do you get these files into the low double digits (i.e. 40 mb) for the web?
    Any help would be terrific

Import your video into Compressor, open Apple Devices and choose HD for Apple Devices (5Mbps) if it is HD or SD for Apple Devices if it is standard def.
The HD setting will give files of around 40MB per minute and the SD will give around 15MB per minute.
You don't want anything less or the quality will begin to suffer.

  • Best Program to Split Up Large .mov Files?

    Hi Applers,
Let's say I have a large .mov file (1920x1080, MPEG-2, 1h46m long). Now I want to divide it up into 15-20 minute chunks.
If I wanted to avoid using FCP or Compressor, what is the best program to do split it up with the least amount of trouble? Third-party ones are fine, but I prefer the free variety.
    Thanks in advance,

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • How do I handle a large movie file?

My wife created a DVD using iDVD containing both slide shows and a couple of movies. The movies play fine in Preview mode, but not on the burned DVD. I read the help files for iDVD and they said that movie files larger than 1GB may not play correctly, and indeed, the files in question are larger.
My question: If we update to a newer version of iDVD is this problem (or limit, I guess) solved?
Is there a way to break up a large movie file into smaller ones, but still have iDVD play them sequentially? (And with only one menu item on the main menu?)
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    Dave,
I have never heard that large movie files may not play correctly. I have filled up many a DVD without experiencing this problem.
Now on splitting the movie up. Since the movie is already in iMovie, you just need to do a Edit>Split at Playhead to chop up the clip. As long as you don't put anything between the adjacent clips, they will play seemlessly when viewed on the DVD. You will not notice that they were split at all.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best settings for highest quality for exporting a .mov  file to h.264

    Hi,
I want to know what the best settings are for the highest quality for exporting a .mov file (720p50) to h.264. I want the same quality as the original.
I want to know the data rate etc.
    regards,
    Jeroen

There is no way to get the exact same quality when transcoding from an editing source to a highly compressed H.264 QT. However, you can get a real high quality by adjusting the data rate.
However, these things depend on the length of the original. I routinely encode H.264s with good results in the 3000-5000 data rate range. I also make sure that I use multiple pass encoding. Take a short snippet of your project (10 seconds or so), and try various bit rates until you have one you like that doesn't take forever.

  • Exporting an .mov file with timecode

    Hi -
I'm trying to find the best way to export an .mov file from Premiere or Encoder with timecode either burned in (as well as embedded in the file). Right now when I export the .mov files no timecode is coming through. Normally I would be able to read the timecode with the earlier version of Quicktime, and I can see it is just starting at 0.
I'm trying to export as .mov files so they can be given to transcribers.
    Thanks for any help!

It get's it from where you tell it to in the effect's settings.  If it wasn't right, correct it.

First idea is for you to provide the name of the program you are using, so a Moderator may move this message to the program forum where actual users may respond

  • Trying to Export an .MOV file to a .WMV file

I am trying to export an .mov file to a .wmv file using Quicktime 7.0 Pro. It exports the file fine, but it does not convert the entire file, the last part of the file is not there. The .mov file is 1 min and 16 secs long, and the exported .wmv file only comes out 29 sec long. Anyone have any ideas why it would do this? Thanks.
    Rob

You can use VisualHub to convert to WMV without restrictions.
It's only available in the wild, because it's no longer supported. You can also download it on this page:
    http://www.wyodor.net/MoreEmbed/embedmedia.html
Edit: To convert WMV to a h264/AAC movie without restrictions you need the Beta version of the free Flip4Mac for Snow Leopard.
It contains a bug that was later fixed. [Read my blog about it|http://translate.google.nl/translate?js=y&prev=t&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wyodor.net%2Fblog%2Farchives %2F10-01-200910-31-2009.html&sl=nl&tl=en] (Google translation, so smile) where you can download the Beta. Simply Install it and be happy.

  • How can I send a large .MOV file to a USB?

We had an event a few days ago, and made a movie with iMovie, when I finally finished making it and adding what i wanted and edited to my like I exported it. The file is currently 9.86GB. I have a 32GB USB thumbdrive but everytime I try to "drag and drop" it tells me the file is too large for the volumes format. Now, I'm confused. I also tried exporting it directly to my USB but that didn't work also. I've tried sending the movie through an ethernet cable I had, and I succeeded but the quality downgraded and the movie was converted to a 8.42GB movie. I want the full HD video I took and edited, and thats on my mac. By the way I'm trying to send this movie to my VAIO PC. So does anyone know how to copy .MOV files to a USB? It's a PNY 32GB USB thumbdrive.

    Here's how I did it:
    1.  Open disc utility
    2.  Select the USB drive on the left
    3.  Click the "erase" button
    4.  It will give you a "Format" pull down bar, select "Mac extended journaled." That will give you the complete USB to use. I don't suggest case sensitive journaled.
    5.  Click "Erase and Reformat"
    Success!

  • Best practice for exporting a .mov file for YouTube

I am using FCPX 10.0.9 with a MacBook Pro. We are needing to upload relatively small-size high school football videos as .mov files to YouTube for my newspaper. I have been choosing the Export File option with the setting set to h.264, exporting the file to the desktop and then uploading that .mov file to YouTube. (I do not have Compressor installed on this Mac.) The other night the first of three files done like this uploaded fine, but the next two just kept processing and processing at YouTube and never finished. The following morning the files processed fine. Any thoughts about why ths might be happening?
And would it be better to export in another file format --.mp4 files -- instead that might cause less of a problem and which of the export options would be best?
    Thanks,
    Douglas

Am I correctly uploading a .mov file to YouTube by using the Export File command with the export setting set to .h264 then if I wish a reasonable size file for upload?
Sure. There are many ways to get videos to YT and yours is a reasonable approach.
"Reasonable size" should be thought of in terms of upload time. Again, YT will re-compress whatever you give it. So depending on how quickly you need to get it up on the Web, it's better to upload files that have more information than less information. (To that end, some folks upload very large Pro Res files; they also have a lot of patience.)
Just to let you know, the majority of FCPX users follow one of two workflows:
    1) Share>You Tube option and have FCP handle the uploading;
    2) Export as a Pro Res Master File; bring the master file into Compressor and apply the user's custom settings; upload using YT's uploader.
FWIW, I prefer the second workflow.

  • How do I combine several mov files into a larger mov file?

I am just getting started with Premiere Elements (12.0) and have what seems to me to be a very simple goal.  I have several short ".mov" movies and would like to combine them into a single ".mov" movie.  I have gone through the menus and can't find a way to do this.  If someone would point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

    Norm Noe
    Thanks for the reply.
There is no reason why you should not be able to export your Timeline content to a file with a .mov file extension with several choices for video compression.
From your details, I suspect I know the problem that has not surfaced until your latest post.
When you get to Publish+Share/Computer, there are several choices. Adobe Flash Video with one of its export f4v is a choice not the default for the exports under Publish+Share/Computer. The categories to select from under Publish+Share/Computer include, from top to bottom...
    Adobe Flash Video
    MPEG
    AVCHD
    XAVC=S
    AVI
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
    Image
    Audio
It is the QuickTime choice which will give you the exports with the .mov file extension. And, you can select from a large number of video codecs to go with the .mov file extension. But, to make that choice, you need to
    (a) Have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer
    (b) Use the scroll bar to the right of the list to get to the bottom of the list where you will find QuickTime.
Example for you to look at if you have not already...if your source is 1920 x 1080p24...
    Then
    Import....
    Project Preset
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p 24
    Export
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    QuickTime
with Presets = NTSC DV 16L9
then, under the Advanced Button/Video Tab, customize the Export Settings...See screenshot below
Leave the Bitrate Settings without the check mark next to "Limit Data Rate to" for this first run.
Depending on the file size of the export, next time we can type a specific data rate value in that field.
Please review, consider, and then let us know if you are OK with the information provided.
    Thank you.
