Exporting movies from iPhoto?

using version 6
the slideshow from iPhoto of photos is a world of difference using the same photos in iMovie.
Is there any way to keep the slideshow quality of iPhoto and export it into iMovie, and keep the quality?
My digital camera takes photos and movies. I would like to combine the two.
But iMovie almost destroys completely the quality of the photos.
I know I can export to iDVD and have two separate viewings, I guess. one for movies and one for photos. Does anyone know of a way to make movies export from iPhoto?

ain11:
You can create a slideshow in iPhoto and then use the Share->Send to iDVD menu option. That will create a .mov file of the slideshow, save it in your Movies folder and put it in an iDVD project.
For just the photos, put them in an album in the order you want and then in iDVD create a slideshow, open the slideshow section, go to the Media/photos section and locate the album in iPhoto you created. Select the photos from that album and drag into the iDVD slideshow window.
A way to get better quality movies out of iMovie into iDVD is to not let iMovie do the rendering of the assets. Once you have the movie complete close iMovie. Then open the movie project package, Control-click and select Show package contents. Navigate down until you find the SharedMovies/iDVD folder. There will be a .mov file that you can drag into an open iDVD menu window. Be sure not to put in a drop zone for the menu.
That will let iDVD do the rendering as it uses those assets in the project. IMO the sharpest quality is obtained by importing the stills into iDVD and creating the slideshow here. You can have titles and comments if necessary. The downside, if it is one, is no KB effect. IMO, no loss but others really like it.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • I exported 10G of movies from Iphoto but did not get new room on my hard drive.  Why?

My hard drive is almost full so I exported about 10GB of movies from IPhoto to an external drive.  Then I placed them in Trash.  However, there was no increase on the hard drive available space after I placed those files in trash.  Also, there was no trash in the trash bin.  So it appears as if the files are not really being deleted.  (They have disappeared from the iphoto events folder.)  I also have the same movie clips in IMovie which I did not manipulate.  Prior to this event I was trying to delete files from a thumb drive and also had the files disappear but there was no change in available space on that thumb drive.  In that case I did the deletion on a PC and when placed back on the Mac computer the deleted space became available.
Why are file deletions not being processed to add space to the hard drive?

I can't help with iPhoto specifically since I don't use it, but just out of curiosity: did/do you empty the trash? Space is not regained until after the trash is actually emptied.
Also, when you export or drag/copy files,  normally the files are copied to the new location and the originals still exist. As for space on your hard drive: you need to maintain an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB; more is better. If you edit/render/burn video, you need to have at least as much free space on your hard drive as the size of the files in your project if you want the machine to perform satisfactorily.

How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone?  I synced the devices and noticed that some photos and movies on my laptop iPhoto were not transferred to my iPhone?

I am not sure, which answer you found - so just in case:
If you sync your iPhone with the iPhoto library, the photos will only stay on the iPhone until the next sync and they are not in the Camera Roll. If you transfer using the Photo Stream, they will only be vidsible in the stream, until they are replaced in iCloud by newer content.
So, if you want to transfer the photos permanently, save them to the Camera Roll.

  • Export pix from iPhoto 4.0.3 to a digital picture frame (Tiger OS)

Can't succeed in downloading pix using a card reader. Desired pix moved to an album, then export selected. In dialog box, file export and album name are selected, jpg extension selected, pixel size changed and use extension is selected. The jpg file type and pixel size items conform to frame mfgr specs. The system proceeds to do something as the 100+ photos are supposedly transferred. After proper disconnection from the Mac, the Xd card is placed in the frame but no pix show up. In trying different sizes and extensions, the system prompts that these pictures already exist, as if the pictures are loaded into the card. I have tried creating a desktop file and dragging the album from iPhoto to the desktop with no success ( a subsequent move from the desktop to the card reader icon was planned). How can I be sure that the pix are on the card? How does the system know I want the pix to go on the card since it was never selected? Vince V

    Vince V,
How does the system know I want the pix to go on the card since it was never selected?
Any time you export files from iPhoto (or save files in a Save or Save As dialog box in another application) you have to designate a location for the exported (or saved) files. If you did not designate the Xd card as your location, then the system does not know you want the exports saved there. Where did your exports go? Can you do a Finder Search for them?
Desired pix moved to an album, then export selected. In dialog box, file export and album name are selected, jpg extension selected, pixel size changed and use extension is selected.
Did you remember to select all of the pix in the album before selecting export? It has been a very long time since I've used version 4, but in iPhoto 6 when you click the Export button in the dialog box you described it opens to a standard Mac Save As dialog box. That second box is where you specify the location for the exported files. Are you getting that dialog?
I have tried creating a desktop file and dragging the album from iPhoto to the desktop with no success ( a subsequent move from the desktop to the card reader icon was planned).
I would recommend a 2-part move, just as you describe here. What did happen when you tried to drag the photos to the desktop folder?

  • Move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom using PS Elements to keep Events and Albums

I am trying to move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom by using PS Elements as a go-between to keep events and album but it doesn't appear that the option to keep events and albums is possible using iPhoto '11.  However, the instructions for coming from iPhoto '09 show that option.  Is there any way to do this?

I’m not sure about that routine. I’m not even sure events are transferrable and there of lots of things that could go wrong. You may want to think about importing your masters directly into Ligtroom. From finder you need to be in Pictures (not the application) and control-click on iPhoto Library.
iPhoto will have created duplicates and hidden your originals. You need to find your masters from the iPhoto Library - Right-Click and select “Show Package Contents”
Older versions of iPhoto uses an Originals folder and in later versions; Masters. It’s not a good idea to go messing with the structure as it could corrupt the iPhoto Library. Apple has made this structure for good reason; so that you can always use the revert command to go back to an original, even if you have edited in iPhoto using cropping or red eye removal, for example.
However, if you have no further use for iPhoto, you could consider moving your originals/masters to a new folder structure (iPhoto automatically creates dated sub-folders) and then importing to Lightroom. Alternatively if you still need iPhoto, export duplicates to the desktop and bring those into Lightroom. That will keep iPhoto safe.
I do actually use iPhoto for creating events which can then be used to make cool slideshows within iPhoto. However Lightroom is my main management and photo editing tool and I have created an export pre-set for sending jpegs into iPhoto. I have even dragged the iPhoto Library off the hard drive to an external hard drive – but that means keeping it connected when using iPhoto.

  • Exporting video from iPhoto to Desktop

    I take a video with my iPhone4.
I download it to iPhoto (9.3.2) on my MBP Retina (Mtn Lion).
I export it from iPhoto to my desktop.
When I play it on my desktop (QT 10.2), I get no picture and no sound.
    What's happening?

If you export as a Jpeg then you're telling it to export a movie as a still image. Jpeg is a format for photos, not video
iPhoto performs no compression on video at all. It has no relevance to the issue at hand.

  • How do I move from iPhoto 11' to Lightroom 4

    Hello there,
I am looking to start using Lightroom 4 as my primary photo editing/management software and I was hoping someone can give me a good idea on how to transfer all my images and import them in to Lightroom from iPhoto 2011 (I have about 8,000). My biggest concern is not duplicating my files. I do not have an external hard drive so these will remain on my internal. I have not really made any edits of my images with iPhoto, so I am not really concerned about losing those edits. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched all over the net and have not really found any good solutions or tips. Thanks!

First thing I would do is to back up your images. To do this, you will have to go to File>Export. There, the best option to do is chose the "Kind" to be "original." This allows everything you export to be in its original format. When you click Export, a new window will display to let you chose your destination. As I said before, this will let you pick a folder that iPhoto will dump all your images in to without maintaining your current orginzation as far as events etc. That is fine because this back up is just in case something seriously goes wrong. I prefer using a external HD. You could make a folder on the internal drive, but this will create a duplicate of your images.
Once your backup is complete. The second step is to actually get all the images out of the iPhoto Library while trying to keep everything in its current state. The easiest and most simple way to do this is to use Aperture 3. If you do not own it now, you can download the 30 day trial just to be able to do this. Its the safest method I have found and well worth using the trial just for this purpose. Even if you decide to purchase it later or even delete the trial version, the pictures will be where you move them and Aperture can always reference them. The first step to this Aperture technique is to import your iPhoto Library into Aperture. You have several options of how to do this as well. Thankfully, Aperture will mirror your iPhoto Library in its structure (events etc.) Whe Aperture is open, click on File>Import> and then select iPhoto Library. A dialogue box will open and the iPhoto Library will be highlighted. In this box, you have the option to select where you want to store the files. By default, "In their cuurent location" is selected. By leaving this selected, Aperture will leave them in iPhoto's Library and simply reference them. What you should select is "In the Aperture Library." This might take some time, but eventually all your iPhoto events will be transfered in to Aperture, and you will see them in the side bar appear under the Projects & Albums inside a folder called events, that is inside a folder called iPhoto Library. Each "event" from iPhoto will now become "Projects" in Aperture 3 and will have a yellow icon next to the name of each event/project. (At this point, I am not sure if the iPhoto library is deleted and moved, or if this makes a copy of it. If it makes a copy and iPhoto Library is still there, you can simply delete the iPhoto Library and it will delete your photos which would now be duplicates any way)
The next step is to relocate masters in Aperture. What this does is actually lets you move your events out of the Aperture packaged file, but keeping every event/project in its own folder so you do not have to reorganize thousands of images. In the inspector pane on the left, you will see that you can open the iPhoto Library folder and see the Events folder. Open the events Folder and you will see a list of all the events/projects. This process is a bit time consuming. Start off by selecting your first event, and click on File>Relocate Masters For Project. When the dialogue box opens up, you will be given the option of selecting where the folder will be moved. What you can do is select your user name under favorites, select Pictures, and put them in there (or make a new folder within pictures). After you select your destination, you want to chose the Subfolder Format and select Project Name. What this does is create a folder named after your Project/Event and put all the pictures in that Event in that new folder. You will see a File name example listed at the bottom for you. Once you have that all set up, you can select Relocate Masters. Aperture will move those pictures where you selected, keeping them in their Event/Folder and maintain a clean organization. You will notice as the move takes place, a little tag icon appears in each image as its moved in the bottom right, indicating that the images are now Referenced in Aperture and not a managed master any longer.
You have to keep doing this for each project/event, one at a time. Once you are done, you are done. The files will all be organized in their respective folders in the location that you chose. The beauty of it is that they are already referenced in Aperture, and if you wanted to keep using it, you dont have to do any thing else. You can leave them there and just keep adding to Aperture as you take more pics. Secondly, you can now import them into LR by selecting them where they are, and clicking ADD in the import menu of LR. That leaves them where they are and references them as well.
If you'd like to add the IPTC data to the images as well, go in to Aperture and at the top bar menu select Metadata > Write IPTC Metadata to Master. You can do this before or after you relocate the masters. But I would do it before you import to LR.
This is the method I have used and it was the most successful without losing any of my organization in iPhoto and not duplicating any of the images. It seems a little complicating, but considering Apple gives you no choice from within iPhoto, this is the safest method to free yourself from their crap. The important thing to remember when referencing these images in Aperture or iPhoto is to never move any file once its in a folder in your pictures location and already referenced by the program. Later on, if you wanted to use iPhoto again, you can simply import this stuff again, leaving it in their location and referencing them in Aperture. That has its limitations as well, but such is life in Apples world. You really have no other choice.
The other two options are to use these two programs: iPhoto2Disk (http://www.iphototodisk.com/index.html) or PhotoShare (http://code.google.com/p/phoshare/). The first, iPhoto2Disk does cost 12.99 and is supposed to be able to let you export everything from iPhoto in its current state. PhotoShare is free, but I personally have not used it. I felt more save going the Aperture route just because I knew Aperture communicated well with iPhoto and I can easily get Aperture to do what iPhoto should have been able to do in export.
    I hope this all helps!

  • IMovie doesn't import all movies from iPhoto - at least one solution

I noticed that iMovie 08 imported my movies from iPhoto, but strangely not all of them. A quick search of the support forums indicated many others were having the same issue.
After comparing file attributes of movies that were importing successfully into iMovie versus movies that didn't show up, I found that a rogue character ("&") was preventing iMovie from importing the file properly.
Renaming the title in iPhoto does not resolve the issue, since the file name (in Finder) remains the same. However, if I make a copy of that file outside of the iPhoto Library, rename it in Finder, then re-import it back into iPhoto, then iMovie will see it. I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.
I found this to work at least with my .avi files. I still have the same issue as everyone else with iMovie not importing .mpg files that play properly in iPhoto.

Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.

  • Best way to Remove movies from iphoto to freeup space ?

I would like to remove all the movies from iphoto and place them in a folder for later processing in imovie ...i would like to free up all the space
    any suggestions

    Really easy:
Find all the movies in your iPhoto Library. Then Export them to a Folder. Then delete them from iPhoto.
What makes this easy is that every movie is automatically keyworded when you import it.
So to find all the Movies:
    File -> New Smart Album
    Keyword -> is -> Movie
Now that you've found them. Select All and
File -> Export *_Kind: Original_* (Note: setting the Kind: to Original is vital)
    And export them.
    Then trash them from iPhoto.

  • Can I export photos from iphoto to lightroom?

can I export photos from iphoto to lightroom?

Not very knowledgeable on iPhoto are we?
The problem with iPhoto is it copies and or moves all your photo into it's database structure which is just a pain
It moves nothing. It can copy, or reference the images.
Even Picasa is better then iPhoto as it actually displays RAW images.
As Keith says, iPhoto work with every format that the OS supports - in other words all the same ones as Aperture.
iPhoto doesn't even support Adobe DNG format.
    Going for 0/3 ?
As for migrating from iPhoto to Lightroom:  Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
