Exporting movies to wmv files

Trying to export short movies into wmv files. After I create the file through Expert Settings and choosing wmv, I open the file and it is only 30 seconds long. The original file in iMovie is 3 minutes long. I have tried other movies and even saved them as MOV's and they all are only 30 seconds after exporting as well. Is there a setting that I am not seeing that is defaulting to 30 seconds for the length? How do I change it so the exported movie is as long as the original in iMovie? Thanks!!

I purchsed the Studio version and it works fine now. Thanks for the help. One issue I do see is that I can't change the size of the movies while exporting as WMV files. Before I upgraded I was able to choose the size of the movie I wanted to export, now that is all greyed out. Is there a reason for that?

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • What's the best settings to Export movie for smaller file sizes?

Hi, I've been working on some helmet cam footage which was taken with Xvidmpeg4.avi and was advised to convert it to dvavi for editing in PrE, this created a huge file to work with, the original footage was 206mb and the finished edited dvavi file is now 1.56gb, what settings can I use to export the movie with a much smaller file size, but hopefully try to retain some quality, to upload to places like Vimeo? I thought I would try to export it in the same as the original footage Xvidmpeg4.avi thinking this might compress it again to something like the 206mb of the original and the original was good quality footage, but PrE just hangs up with a box stating 'Xvid Status (Not Responding)' and when I try to cancel that the whole thing crashes and closes? So when I go to File > Export > Movie, what would be the best settings in:
    General > File Type ?
    Video > Compressor
lots of options under compressor if I select the file type as Microsoft AVI, so I'm guessing something under that would compress it to a smaller file size but what, I could spend all night trying different settings so hoping for some advice?
Or, if I'm completely in the wrong place for the settings and should be doing something else please tell me?
    Thanks, Gav

Thanks for the replies, but to me it's still confusing - simply because there are so many settings, if I go to Share/Personal Computer I'm then presented with a whole load of settings
    NTSC Flash Video
    MPEG
    DVAVI
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
and under each of those is a lot more advanced settings?
I'm guessing I wouldn't use flash or quicktime, so which of the others would I use and what are the advanced settings to use as I can't find anything that is .wmv or .mov
What I've done with other videos that I've exported from PrE as dvavi is then to put it through Windows Movie Maker, Publish Movie, This Computer, then put the settings to Windows Media DVD Quality (PAL) (3.0 Mps) - this seemed to be the only setting that reduced the file size considerably but still had good quality, but it's still about twice the original file size?
This all seems long winded to me, open original file, convert original file, output another file, then output the file again in something else which then results in loss of quality and a larger file than the original? I'm ending up with lots of files, was hoping just to edit in Premiere then export/publish that edited clip and that would be it, then upload to the net.
Is it not possible to just edit my original footage and save it, just like you would with something like a word document, should I be using something else and not Premiere?
    Thanks.

  • Exporting iMovie6 to WMV file

    Hello,
I have a almost 4 minute iMovie. When I try and export it to a .wmv, it only saves/compresses 30 seconds of it. I have tried using the default settings, and at least one setting under the three different category types and I get the same results. I'm trying to send this video overseas and they aren't able to open a .mov or .mg4 formats. These people are strictly old version Windows users.
My next step is to upgrade iMovie to see if the newer versions could help.
Any information or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

The export control on my QuickTime Pro 7.6.9 no longer allows me to export mov audio files as wav.  I have a user license number.  Should I unintall and re-install?  Will I be able to quote my current license number to avoid having to pay again?  Help!

The export control on my QuickTime Pro 7.6.9 no longer allows me to export mov audio files as wav.
Are you saying the option is missing or that it is grayed out? If grayed out, what is the audio compression format used in the MOV file container?

  • Garageband not exporting movie.  no file

Garageband not exporting movie.  Goes through process but no file created.

Exporting to either QuickTime Movie or QuickTime Conversion makes a QuickTime file. The only difference is the first way the creator type is Final Cut so that application is launched. If you want QuickTime to open the file, either change the open type in Get Info for the file, or right click on the file and choose what application you want to open it.

  • Exporting .mov to .avi file: computer crashes

I'm trying to export a .mov file to .avi. I get about 80% through this and my computer crashes. I'm guessing it's because my memory can't handle it (have got 512MB SDRAM only), but I might be wrong about this. The .mov file originally came in a zipped file, so perhaps in the unzipping I've overlooked something. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • IMovie 11 Exporting Movie and No File and External Drive Falling Asleep

Help!  Had a frustrating day and night with iMovie, which has been happening a lot lately.
We are making a highlight video for my son from his many sports events which are on a 3TB fixed external drive and a 2TB portable one.  After putting the highlight video together with clips from both drives it is time to Export the movie which I am doing to the 3TB Drive.  However after completion, there is no file anywhere.  Upon taking the same steps with same filename, there is no warning about existing file.  I have tried to export to local drive on Mac as well.
Also, if I do a higher quality export it takes a while and the external portable drive falls asleep.  Any way to keep it awake without sitting there and accessing the drive manually.  I looked in the drive settings through the mac and it does not tell it to put the drive to sleep.  In hindsight we should have had all videos on the 3TB drive but I am afraid to move them now.
And...we put some arrows in pointing to him with a freeze frame and PIP.  The arrows are there when I select them manually but don't appear when running through the movie as we preview the entire footage.

  • Cannot Import Nor Export MOV and WMV

As per the results I found on this forum, I ran the Update Manager, and everything should now be fully up to speed. And yet I still cannot drop a WMV or MOV into a timeline, nor can I locate encoding presets that have anything to do with either format. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Problems exporting to Windows Media file

    Hello,
I don't know why, but when I export movies as WMV files, I am only able to do a few seconds of it (30 seconds to 35 seconds) . Any one know why I am not able to export the entire movie? I did not install it on this computer, but I believe it's using a codec from Flip4Mac.
    Thanks in advance

resonally, I don't use either one. For WMV format, I use Microsoft's free Windows Media Encoder on my Windows XP system (no Mac version available).< </div>
Yar, find a cheap used PC; should be about $100.
Having a dedicated PC for this will save you endless headaches. You just cannot imagine how weird it is getting QT to WMV. Popwire and Flip4Mac both have excellent white papers you can download that explain why their solution is better than the other guy's. These can give you some clues about the types of problems you are going to have with bitrates, codecs and gamma/bright changes between platforms.
You also want to explore thoroughly the option of using Flash for crossplatform delivery. It is completely agnostic, universally available, and tolerant of all kinds of weird data issues.

  • Exported .mov file gives me a purple video

    Hi,
I'm trying to export a .mov file but the end result is always a purple video.
If I export as a .wmv file it shows the colors just fine.

My video card driver is up to date and so is Quicktime.
    Who can help me?

Have something for your to try, that is, deletion of the BadDrivers.txt file.
In your Windows 7 64 bit, the path to it is:
    Local Disk C
    Program Data
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    9.0
and in the 9.0 Folder is the BadDrivers.txt file that you delete.
Make sure that you have the computer Folder Options Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the path described.
Let us see if that has any influence on the results.
But just so that we are clear, please confirm
    a. before the Timeline content, the Timeline content plays back in the Edit Mode monitor without any color problem - no purple images
    and
    b. it is only in the export that you see the purple result
If none of the above helps, could you post a screenshot of your QuickTime export settings under the Advanced Button of the preset that you have selected.
    Thank you.

  • Exporting from a MAC in FCP to a WMV file

    Hi,
Having some issues with exporting a WMV file on Final Cut 5. It will only export a 30 second clip. I have been reading that I need to buy Flip4Mac or Quicktime Pro to convert a Quicktime file into a full lenth WMV file. Do I really need to purchase more software? Or is there a way to to do that in Final Cut or Compressor? I am trying to export a 720x480 WMV file from a 1280x720 file.
    Thanks in advance.

I have used Media Converter for mac by iSkysoft for the past year - $50.

  • Working with .wmv files in GoLive 6.0...HELP

I have spent hours searching for what would seem to be an easy answer and have given up. I am a intermediate level user of GoLive 6.0 trying to insert a .wmv file for my website. Can someone please provide step by step instructions on how do this? Help....thank you!

Saving a WMV as MOV in QuicktimePro is simply putting a MOV wrapper on the WMV so FCP will better handle it. It's a Save As not an export so there's no additional compression.
Ultimately you will have to render though, most likely because it's not one of the video formats natively handled by FCP (DV, DVCPro50, etc). It's not just the physical settings, the "video" codec itself must be supported. BTW if you were to edit in HDV you'd have to render too for output (to create new GOP structure in that case though).
    Hi Craig,
Thanks for the advice, a few things though....
"Flip4Mac Player Pro allows you to edit WMV in FCP."
The problem is that I need to render when I import
WMV files into FCP, even though I have matched all of
the parameters in the sequence settings (ie. pixel
aspect ratio, frame rate, frame size, etc.)
I don't know for sure, but my understanding is I have
to render because there is no WM9 option under the
"compressor" parameter in the Sequence Settings.
Because of this it is impossible to import WMV files
without rendering even with FLip4Mac, because I have
it installed and can still export as a WMV file.
Have you discovered a way to import WMV files into
FCP without needing rendering? This is critical for
me because the environment I'm in doesn't allow for
long render times, as it will slow down the workflow
    of the whole newsroom.
"I can also open WMV in QuicktimePro (with Flip4Mac)
and save the file as MOV. I find it works smoother
    that way."
But doesn't it degrade the quality when you convert
to .MOV? And for me, going from WMV to MOV back to
WMV will result in degradations at each step won't
    it?

  • Working with WMV files in FCP 5 Timeline

I know Flip4Mac Studio Edition allows for importing and exporting into and out of FCP 5 in WMV format. What I'm not sure of, is can you do intensive editing on the WMV files in FCP 5 without any glitches. Will FCP run smoothly?
I am asking because I work at online company that will be receiving wmv files on its servers. This is a high volume workflow with an intense turnover rate. We are receiving hour long clips and re-editing them down to 2 minutes. There is no time to go through lengthy WMV to MOV conversions. We need to receive, edit, and output all in WMV.
Can FLip4Mac with FCP 5 edit an intense environment like this? Where everything is done in WMV? Or Is Flip4Mac primarily for converting WMV into MOV so that editing in FCP is done with MOV files, and then at the end exporting as WMV again.
Is FLip4Mac the only solution. Are there others? After recommending and praising Macs, I may be on thin ice if FLip4Mac isn't a sufficient workaround!!
    Thanks Curtis
