Exporting PDF to Word with Acrobat 8 - Does this work?

Has anyone had any success with a decent export-to-Word using Acrobat 8 (from CS3)?
Acrobat 7 is worthless for this. I suspect the woeful results have much to do with how the PDF was made. If it came from InDesign or Illustrator, and has layers, that will no doubt flummox wonky old Word.
Or, is it the wonky "export to Word" function that's wonky? I see there is also "Export to RTF" which is much the same file format as .doc. You get exactly the same crazy results.
Here at my job, they have determined the best way to get a decent Word doc out of what we're publishing is to export each individual text box from InDesign as "RTF". Then open word and wrangle all the bits.
This is time consuming and senseless - certainly the technology exists to convert PDFs to Word cleanly and perfectly.
Or ... is Adobe just telling us, by quietly setting us up to fail, that we shouldn't be using Word at all? So they're not going to bother to make this work?
Sadly, at my gig, we need to do this. Our clients are dinosaurs, and the average T-Rex is deathly afraid of Acrobat Reader and PDFs.

< Frankly, I don't really give a lot of thought to employers who refuse PDFs for graphic design positions. It's like asking me to retouch a photo using MacPaint.>
A resume is a document, not a design sample. A lot of employers do not want "designed" resumes at all. They want simple searchable text resumes. Even using special formatting features in Word can mess up their processes. HR departments could care less how pretty it is, all they want is data. You'll need to impress the design manager at the interview, after HR has passed it on. Even the hiring manager may find a highly designed resume to be annoying and difficult to read.
Of course if that's not where you want to work, that's up to you, but you might be turning down excellent design positions by insisting they accept things your way instead of doing things their way! ;-)

  • Can't "print to PDF" from Word with Acrobat XI

I recently upgraded from Acrobat X to Acrobat XI and now I don't seem to be able to "Print to PDF" from within a Word document. It tries to generate the PDF then produces an error log which says:
"Adobe PDF Settings file read error in :C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\Standard.joboptions"
Is there a fix for this?

Just to be sure about the functionality of everything else. Try changing the job options in the printer (and/or) PDF Maker to the print or press options and see if the printing and PDF Maker operate correctly. If that is the case, you indeed know the problem is bad files. I am not sure if the ones that fail can be extracted seperatedly from the Acrobat distribution or not. I might check my Win7 installation of AAXI and see if I have any issues with the job options. I generally do not use the Std options, but one provided by IEEE for publications. I have found that works about as well as any and the results generally look nice. It generally embeds all fonts that is another option I want. The font issue is not optimum from my viewpoint with the Standard settings that does not embed all fonts.
You might try to see if you can open them in Distiller. If so you might want to save copies from within Distiller (just save with a new name). Then check your last step and see if they open when resaved or when used as the settings for the print.
I am just trying to dream up things you can try. The Distiller route might be a good test. If the copies work fine, but the originals do not, you could just rename the originals with ...orig or such and then change the name of the copies back to the original name. If you wanted to go one step further (I recommend it), change all of these new versions to be read only as the original should be.
I forgot to mention that to edit them in Distiller, go to the settings tab and select the job settings, then enter edit. The original files can not be saved without changing the name since they are read only. If you need more help on this, ask and I will go to my machine with AAXI.

  • I just purchased Export PDF to Excel and it does not export anything usable. Your terminology should not be "export" but paste image, which is of no value. Please cancel my account and refund my money. What a shame you would advertise this as a product.

  • Does only Adobre Reader "reads" the fields of a PDF when created with Acrobat?

I created a PDF with several fields and exported it.
Then I tried to open it with Firefox and the fields didn't appear.
But it works OK with Adobe Acrobat.
Does only Adobre Reader "reads" the fields of a PDF when created with Acrobat?

Adobe software reads form fields. The rules for how to do form fields are a part of the PDF standard (a book available to anyone) but some companies ignore it and others do half a job. To be safe, use only Adobe Reader. And beware of browsers that ignore Adobe Reader even if you have it.

  • Need help. Exporting pdf to Word or cretaing live fields in doc

I need to take a 180pg doc and save it as a word doc or manage to turn all the necessary areas into live fields. I've tried going to export > word document or File > export to anything really and I keep getting this error message
Adobe was unabl;e to make this document accessible becuase of the following error:
Bad PDF; could not read page structure. Bad PDF; error in processing fonts cannot find CMap resource file> [3]
I received this document form a client overseas. I can't get them to resend another copy.
Anyway's I can get around this error? I'm desperate I have 9 other docs with the same amount of page to make live

Sounds that you want to make the PDF files live and then edit them in Word? Why not directly edit them in Adobe Acrobat? It can help directly edit PDF, the conversion is unnecessary. And if you really want to export PDF to Word but the acrobat can help you little, you would try free PDF to Word Converter, which may help you for the conversion. However, I am not sure you would do that work well. Because I am a little confused about the problem you described. Just have a try and it may helps.

  • Was told a USB device would create a PDF automatically from the data contained within when plugged into my USB port. Doesn't seem to work. How does this work and how can I fix the device I received?

Acrobat is not on the USB device - only Adobe Reader needed on the PC. How does this work? How can I fix this device if at all?

You need to ask the people who sold it to you. Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with Reader.
However, you should be wary of devices that automatically try to open files when plugged in. They can also infect your computers with all kinds of viruses or malware.

Hi. I use Adobe Acrobat XI pro to make a PDF ebook embedded with audio. It works really well on my computer-I can read the book and hear the auto play mp3. The problem is, when I send it to my customers, they have difficulty hearing the audio. A few of them say they have Flash player on their PC and somehow they still can't hear, some say their Google Chrome browser tells them they've already got one flash player while they try to download one. For me, I had to download two versions of Flash player to be able to access to the audio. I don't know what the problem is, is it because it's the latest version of Adobe Acrobat XI pro that people with older version of Adobe reader or flash player can't open it properly? Or is it something else? How can I make sure every customer with different system can access to my books? Hope to hear from you ASAP! Thank you very much.

And how are the customers accessing the PDFs?
    What devices are they using?
What program or apps with versions are they using?
I this age of other then PDF eBooks formats and reader program and apss for computers and mobile devices for these formats I would look at creating the books in one or more of the eBook formats.
Google Chrome and FireFox both have their own version of a PDF reader plug-in and they are well known to be less capable than Adobe Reader. It is possible to configure these products to use Adobe Reader.

  • Is there a size limit to exporting PDF to Word?

Is there a size limit when exporting PDF to Word format?  I keep getting time out errors for files exceeding 100 MB

    Hi riversideredhead63,
100 MB is indeed the file size limit for uploading files to cloud.acrobat.com. Have you tried optimizing the PDF files in Acrobat to reduce their file size?
