Exporting RAW images to Time Capsule

When I tried to export my RAW files to the time capsule to have a back-up it converted them to jpg.  This didn't happen in iPhoto.  Is there something I should do differently?

I'm having an issue where my RAW files I loaded onto the new iPad have entirely disappeared when they WERE there before. I know they were there before because the iPad showed 'RAW+jpg" under each image. Now it doesn't say RAW anymore at all, and I only have jpgs.
Tried syncing my ipad with macbook pro, and instead of a RAW file and lesser quality jgp. It gave me a high quality jpg and the same lesser quality jpg.
Could apple's products actually be deleting my original RAW files?
How do I search for them within the iPad - it appears they've been sucked into a black hole & disappeared when I know they were there.
Any help is much appreciated.

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again
Check to make sure that you are running firmware 7.6.4 on the Time Capsule

The unplugging was of power, if you were unplugging ethernet .. that will not do anything.
    The issue is explained here.

If a restart of the TC is not adequate you maybe in the 2% that has other issues.. please try a full network restart in correct order.. with everything off.. modem.. then TC.. then clients.. with 2min gap to allow modem and TC to finish boot process.

  • Referenced images on time capsule disk

    hi,
because i'm running out of space on my mbp's hard disk, I'm thinking of putting referenced images on a time capsule disk, keeping the library on the mbp, wil this disk be fast enough. The network will be "n" and i'll connect anonther disk to it for back up?
    wil this setup be possible?

The setup is possible but it will be slow, especially if you are using raw or tiff files. Most jpegs are probably workable.
Just get an external drive for your MBP and connect using hardwire of some type.
I have my library on my 15" MBP (and yes, I have previews turned to match 1440x1440) so that I can view the overall content of my library - and also share with iWork/iLife suite. My referenced masters are all on external dirve (2x, one being a backup).
    Cheers

  • How do I Export Raw images from Iphoto to Adobe Photo Elements 4

I recently purchased Photo elements 4 because I could import images from Iphoto in Raw format and work with them. Everything I have read and the instructional video sent to me by Adobe make it look and sound very easy but so far I have had no success.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4. However I can not find my Raw images. What am I doing wrong or failing to do and is there some logical sequence that I have to follow to import Raw images.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
Thanks for any help you can provide

    dakota8,
iPhoto and Adobe Bridge are incompatible, so you need to decide which one you want to use (for which photos). iPhoto is a database, with many flexible features for organizing your library and finding your photos. Bridge is a file browser with some organizing capabilities. You absolutely should not use Bridge or any other application (Finder included) to browse the files inside your iPhoto Library folder, as it will damage the iPhoto database. To verify, click on iPhoto's Help and read the section "About using the iPhoto Library."
If you want to keep your RAW files in iPhoto, then you'll need to open them from iPhoto. As Dave E said, this can be done by setting the iPhoto pref to export RAW files. You also need to set PE 4 as the external editor in iPhoto's preferences. With this setup, you can select photos using iPhoto, open the RAW files into PE 4, then edit. Now comes the wrinkle in the workflow. Normally, you would do a Save to cause your edited file to be saved back into the iPhoto library. This Save, not Save As, requires that the filename and extension stay the same. Works great with jpeg files. However, once you edit the RAW, the extension (and file format) must change. Save will not work, because any save at this point is treated like a Save As. So you have to Save As to a folder OUTside of your iPhoto Library, and then import it in as a new file. There will be no link between the edited version and its unedited RAW file. You could organize inside iPhoto to display the edited file beside its original RAW, or keep separate rolls for the originals and edits.
With that in mind, you might not want to save the RAW files in iPhoto at all. You could create your own filing system for them, which you would browse using Bridge. Upload using Image Capture to save your files to a folder of your choice. Once you edit the RAW files and save as another format, you could them import into iPhoto for cataloging or further editing. You'll just have to find the system that works best for you.
BTW, don't save your edited RAW files as Adobe RAW. I tried and discovered that iPhoto refuses to import them at all.
I have been able to open Bridge and view photos from Iphoto so it seems to me that everything that I have in Iphoto is automatically transfered to Elements 4.
There's no transferring involved at all. Bridge is rooting directly inside the iPhoto Library folder. Did I mention that it's best to avoid this?
However I can not find my Raw images.
When you import a file it is saved into the Originals folder. Your RAW files are there, along with any video clips you may have imported.
iPhoto automatically creates a jpeg version of your RAW files and stores it in the Modified folder. It has to do this in order to display the picture on your screen. With video clips, a jpeg of the first frame is created for display purposes.
I am using a Nikon D200 and just to be safe I have been shooting so the images are saved both in JPEG and RAW.
If you import both versions into iPhoto, then you have
    Originals - RAW
    Modified - jpeg
    Originals - jpeg
(Modified - jpeg - if you edit the jpeg version or if they are auto-rotated to portrait orientation)
I don't shoot in RAW, so I can't really comment about which workflow would be the most efficient. I just played with it long enough to realize that there is no easy way to do it.
    Regards.

  • How do I export raw images? Do presets work?

I am having trouble exporting full size images.  I have a custom "preset" but inspite of this a 25mb photo comes out at 6mb or less.  An ideas as to what I am missing?

TIFF will, but so will JPG with the right settings.  16-bit TIFF will retain more color information than 8-bit TIFF or JPG (which is limited to 8-bit).
An important and difficult point is that the DPI setting in the export preset has no effect on your image size or file size.  Image size is measured in pixels.  You most likely want to select "original size".  File size (in bytes) is determined by Image size (pixels), color-depth (a/k/a "bit depth"), and compression.  Compression is determined by the file format (JPG compresses unless set to highest quality -- JPG _is_ an image-compression file format developed for the Web -- TIFF is almost always uncompressed).
DPI is used by the _output device_ -- the printer or monitor on which the Image will be "printed" -- to determine printed size in inches.
You can set DPI in the Aperture print dialog to _anything_ and it will not change the pixel dimensions or the file size of the file you create.
RAW, btw, describes a family of proprietary sensor data file formats.  RAW files are not image files -- to create a viewable image file a RAW file must be converted (by, naturally, a program called a RAW converter) to an image-format file.  Aperture has a RAW converter built into it.
So, to the task at hand: crop your Image and make whatever adjustments you want.  Export your Image as a 16-bit TIFF set to "original size" and put "300" in the DPI field (to make the print house staff happy).  Send them the file.
Note that the rule-of-thumb is 300 _pixels_ for every inch of paper to be covered, in order to produce very sharp prints that can withstand scrutiny up close.  The further from a picture the viewer stands, the fewer pixels per inch are needed to make the picture appear sharp.  Some billboards are probably printed at about 4 pixels per inch.

  • Delete a spase image on Time Capsule

How can I delete just one of three sparse images on my Time Capsule?  Can this be done with tmultil?

    Try this:
Make sure no backups are taking place.
Turn OFF Time Machine on all computers.
Then pull the power plug on the TC.
    Reboot all Macs.
Once your Mac is back up & running, plug the TC back in and let it restart until you have the green light.
Now try deleting the .sparsebundle file again using the gear icon.
(If you still can't delete the .sparsebundle file, then try changing the permissions on the disk image by adding yourself to the list in the Get Info selection from the gear icon.
Then turn Time Machine back ON on all the Macs.

  • Is it possible to maintain my iPhoto images on Time Capsule?

As it is, I have 130 GB of images and movie on the hard drive of my MacBook Pro. Everytime I attach my camera by USB to my Mac, by default, the images flood into my hard drive. Is there a way to assign that transfer to a folder on my Time Capsule instead? I have a back up of everything on my Time Capsule. I would like to delete my huge iPhoto folder on my Mac if I can make this work.

    Several reasons not to..
When you delete the library on the MBP you also will cause TM to eventually delete it from the backup.
Anything stored on the TC.. is not backed up and there is no way to automate backup from the TC. Your entire library will be sitting there waiting for doomsday!! And make no mistake.. doomsday is coming. I feel like a prophet of doom this morning.
Also it is very easy to corrupt a library on a network drive.. due to the TC nature as a backup device.. you will get continual errors as it takes time to spin up and spin down again. When you start the computer the library will not be available.. and even half way through it is so easy to corrupt a project by sending it to a disk which suffers a wireless glitch.
Generally recommended method is a USB drive plugged into the MBP.. firewire or thunderbolt even better.
TM can still back up the library to TC.
I am not sure what else you can do.. ask in the iphoto section as there are more issues than you know.. and the problem is not just suitability of the TC but how iphoto works.

I got the error message that my Time Capsule "iMac.sparsebundle could not be accessed (error - 1).  It backed up fine yesterday.  Anyone else have this problem?

If it helps I am getting the same message, I have reported it to Apple and they have someone working on it. Mine stopped backing up after having a new hard drive installed. I can however back up to the same time capsule from my laptop.

  • Export imovie library to time capsule problem

Hi, I am trying to move my events, currently on my main HD, onto my time capsule from within Imovie program. However, the TC has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and wont let me do anything with it. I have tried to connect a different external HD and this shows and works fine, so my problem seems to limited to the time capsule.

  • Problems Exporting RAW images to JPEG in Lightroom 1.1

I have used LR 1.1 with much success in editing, then exporting/burning JPEG images.  But now, I am shooting in camera RAW (Nikon D40x), and when I attempt to export the edited images to JPEG files, I get the message that an error has occurred during export, and the files do not burn to jpeg.  What can I do to correct this?

It will convert all images to jpegs, resize ... however you set it up ... and yes, it is so straightforward as it seems to be .
It makes no sense to upload RAW files to the web for public use in the first place. Second, LR does not touch/change the RAW files. Therefore, how would it be able to integrate your dev settings when using RAW on export?
You can add the ftp target in LR and it will upload directly to your web server.
If you choose Flash-based, people need to have the Adobe Flash player installed on their computer. The Flash player itself is not part of the LR setup. Most of people already have it installed and who doesnt will be asked to install it.
