Exporting RAW to JPEG and TIFF

Evaluating LE to hopefully improve some workflow. I noticed however, that when export to a JPEG or TIFF format the file size seems much smaller that I'm accustomed. A D100 9.5MB RAW file converts to appx 2.7Mb JPEG at 100% and appx 7MB in TIFF. Currently when I convert I get a 17-20MB JPEG. I'm I missing something in the setup or is this the larger file size LE produces.

Excuse me Lightroom. I currently use Portfolio 8 to review and tagged a large number of images for production. They have a conversion process that allows you to convert a NEF file to JPEG or TIFF. When converting to from a NEF file that is appx 9.5MB in size to a JPEG at 100% @300DPI which is what my clients require, it produces a a JPEG file that ranges from 17-23MB depending the amount of information. But I still have to pull that image into editing SW to do some cleanup or slight exposure adjustments. It was my hopes that by using Lightroom, I could slimline a couple of these processes. But if LR only provides a exported JPEG file size of what I've seen thus far, then I would unable to accomplish this.
Is this better clarification of my question?

Exporting RAW to jpeg and keeping the develop changes?

Hi. I have my RAW files and catalogs safely backed up on external drives. Now I want to export some files to DVD's. I want these to be hi res jpegs with all the develop changes I made to them in LR, in case I ever want to go back and work on them again. I've done some tests and when I look at these exported photos in LR I see the photo as it was when I finished developing it but with none of my develop settings. How can I do this? Thanks

I understand the need for redundant raw files and catalogs, that's why I have 3 copies on various drives at home. I'm looking for off site storage (and I hate monthly fees to store them in the cloud) so I thought I'd put them on DVDs and store them at work. These are copies I hope I never have to use but if I do I'd like the originals and all my edits. I was hoping to use jpegs to save a little space.
JimHess says I can't do it and 99jon I tried your method but I must be doing something wrong because it didn't work. If you all tell me I should just use my OS to copy the original RAW files and the catalog to DVD (that how I backup to internal and external drives now), I'll do that, I was just looking for a way to do it in LR.

Exif tool and Export Jpeg and Tiff files

I run Lightroom 4.4 under Apple OS X10.4.4
When I export files Exif Tool (in Graphic Converter) under ICC header shows for Jpeg "Primary Platform = Microsoft and for = Tiff Apple; and under ICC Profile Color profile for Jpeg = HP but Adobe 1998 for Tiff. I can see that there is a difference between the profile for Jpeg and Tiff (eg sRgb and Adobe1998) but don't follow why the Primary platform differs and shows Microsoft for Jpeg and that the jpeg profile is HP. Can anyone explain, please, and dose it matter anyway? Thanks Clive

Why the difference in the PrimaryPlatform tag, I don't know, it does not matter.
The ProfileCopyright tag is HP for sRGB, Kodak for ProPhotoRGB and Adobe for AbobeRGB (1998) of course.

Importing JPEG and TIFF

I have some jpeg and tiff images on a disc. I saved the images to my desktop and then imported them into FCP. The problem is that some of the files seem to be bad. Some have a red horizontal line through them and some have blue lines through them. I checked it on another computer and they read fine. I tried saving the images to the desktop a second time but now different images are bad. FCP will not read the bad files.
Any thoughts?

Bad quality when looking at the pictures via the
canevas on the computer or via an external screen ?
The RGB check is a really good idea. I would also consider putting the images on an external media file. The fact that FC is looking on the system drive could be causing some of the problem.

Open Jpeg and tiff in ACR as a choice

It would be nice to be able in choosing wether to open jpeg and tiff in ACR using right mouse click menu. AFAIK now you only can set preferences to open these files always in ACR or never.

Exporting RAW into JPEG, color differences

I've done a lot of searching in these forums and I can't find a solution to my problem. I just spent 30+ hours editing a set of 123 wedding photos in RAW file format. When I export to JPEG, the colors change on just about every photo. I understand that if I would have correctly set up the camer calibration prior to editing, this would have possibly solved my problem. However, the photos are already edited. When I export the files in TIFF, they look fine. It's just the JPEG file format that changes the look of my images. I'm using Lightroom 2.3. My last brainstorm involved importing the already edited TIFF files and then trying to export those into JPEG, the color format was still off. Can anyone Help?

What program do you use to look at the jpegs?
Is your screen calibrated?
What OS are you using?

How does ACR save edited JPEG and TIFF files?

When a JPEG or TIFF file is edited in ACR, are the edits destructive when you click the "Done" button, permanently changing the file? Or is the edit info saved in sidecar files like with edited RAW files, not affecting the original file?
If I reopen a previously edited JPEG file in ACR, will the adjustment settings be the same as where I left off, allowing me to change those edits, like a crop or HSL adjustment? Thanks.

How to export RAW/developed jpegs to jpeg, while keeping unmodified jpegs as originals?

Hi all,
I'm new to LR and can't work out how to get the export setting working as I want. What I want to be able to do is:
1. Import a number of photos into a collection (a mix of RAW and jpeg)
2. Develop the photos that I deem necessary
3. Export the whole collection to a specific folder on my hard drive as jpeg, but for the jpegs in the collection that I have not developed, I want to keep as original
I realise I could just export the developed versions as jpegs, and then manually add the unmodified jpegs, but this seems a bit fiddly and unnecessary. Is it possible to do what I'm trying? I'm using LR 4.1.

I want to create a collection in LR. Then after developing certain images, I want to export the whole collection to different location on my hard drive, while converting the developed files as jpeg, but keeping the non-developed files as originals (but still exporting them to the location). So I would have my 'master' folder in which I keep all my originals, and then a separate folder just for a specific collection, all in jpeg. The reason I want a separate physical location is that I have that location set to automatically sync with cloud storage, so others can view it.
What I was hoping to see when exporting my collection as jpeg was an option for something like 'keep undeveloped jpegs as original'.
Doesn't look l;ike I can do exactly what I want to. I'll find a way I can work with.

Jpeg and tiff issue?

I have processed a large number of images and put them into a burn folder. Some have come out as jpeg and others have come out as Tiffs. Why and how do I get them all to be jpeg?

How, exactly, did you "put them in a burn folder"? If you detail the steps you took in Aperture, someone here can help you.
My first guess is that some them were exported from Aperture as TIFFs. The file format of the files created when you export Versions is set in the Image Export Preset. These can be viewed and edited at "Aperture➞Presets➞Image Export".

Other than screen shots, for printing purposes, I want text and photo on jpeg or .tiff formats? The printer only accepts jpeg and tiff and can't use screenshots.

Crashing when exporting Raw to Jpeg Windows

when converting from raw to jpegs sometimes my computer crashes completely, a complete stop!!!!
other times it comes up with problem and needs to shut down listing

no phone was connected to my pc, the problem is when i run up lightroom, sometimes i can use it then it may suddenly crash the computer switching off completley, other times it says lightroom has a problem and needs too shut down the bout info is what is shown as the problem. hope this helps.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem and am hoping perhaps to get some new feedback. I also have used all the same settings,
the best quality settings that I can do on export, but the quality I get when I convert to JPG is very poor. I do save at 100% because I want to send some of my images to stock agencies that want JPGs but at the very best possible quality. I have experimented in changing the resolution to 300, resizing to 18MP (which is the native size from my camera (Canon 7D), leaving the resizing box unchecked, and tried all all levels and types of sharpening, and none of these settings makes any improvement. I honestly do not think this is an issue of color calibration. The images that I get when I convert from RAW to JPG are are very poor quality, but not so much noise as they appear pixelated. I am going to try to attach a screen capture of a RAW image and a JPG that has been converted. Realize there is a bit of loss of quality in both of these images as they were done by the print screen function, then saved as BMP and then JPG..But doing it this way actually produced a much better quality image than exporting the RAW file to JPG in LR3. Both of these images were saved at 100%
The image at the top is a small segment of the RAW capture at 100% and the bottom one is a segment of the same area of the exported JPG at 100% Note the writing and how it is very pixelated. I think you would agree that it is quite a deterioration in quality. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry that the images do not appear to be showing up on the thread. They do show up when I uploaded them and when I edit them, but I don't see them once I do the update. Any suggestions there would be appreciated as well.

Can I automate the writing of XMP metadata into JPEG and TIFF files?

I have written an ASP.NET 3.5 website application on behalf of an annual international photographic competition. Entrants will be uploading digital photos in either JPEG or TIFF format. Ideally, I would write entrant identity and image title information into the XMP metadata for each image immediately after upload - but so far, I have failed to find any way to do this in ASP.NET.
Thousands of images are involved, so I need to find a way to automate the metadata insertion, perhaps with some sort of script that uses a text file (extracted from the SQL Server database on my website) as the source of the metadata for a batch of images. Is this the sort of task that can be done by writing a script for Bridge CS3? Are there any scripts already in existence that I could use? I am a total beginner in this area.
I use a Win XP PC, though I have a colleague who, I think, has CS3 on his Mac (running under the Leopard OS), so scripts for either platform might be usable.

I use images for presentations. Recently I've noticed a decrease in quality ( sharpness and definition) of pictures copied into Keynote. Same problem with both JPEGs and TIFF files. I've recently upgraded to keynote 09, but with no improvement.

I use images of paintings for presentations. Over the last 3 months or so I've noticed that I cannt copy images (either JPEg or TIFF) without a reduction in sharpness and definition. Hope someone can help with this problem.

The solution:
Dont print to PDF!
SAVE AS COPY, then select Adobe PDF and click SAVE, this will bring up a dialog box with the options you need (including the "High Quality Print" Adobe PDF Preset)

Exporting raw to jpegs

I have a few hundred images that I shot in Camera Raw, that I've modified and corrected in Bridge (CS3) & Photoshop (CS3). I now have a need to export them to JPG, and each way that I've tried has resulted in images that look nothing like what I see in Bridge.
1) I first tried exporting them with a batch file that I created (saves as jpg @ quality 12). This results in my images having a very yellow tint, compared to with the originals in Bridge.
2) Used the Image Processor under (Tools -> Photoshop). This resulted in very washed out images by comparisom.
Any help/suggestions would be great!

Format - RAW vs JPEG vs TIFF?

I am new to Aperture and I received a Nikon D3000 for Christmas. I am NOT a professional photographer. I just take pictures of my family and places we go. I would appreciate suggestions as to what format might be best for me. Thanks.

JPEG is the simplest, smallest, probably offers best quality for someone who doesn't want to post-process the image themselves, but offers the least amount of control. When shooting in JPEG format, you can think of the computer inside the camera as being your own little photo-processing department. The camera will not only "capture" the image, it'll post process it by adjusting light levels, white balance, noise levels, sharpening, etc. It's all fully automatic.
HOWEVER... it will ALSO compress the image substantially so that it doesn't take much space. When it does this, it'll decide to reduce the quality of the image in areas where the human eye probably wont notice. This is lost data that you can never really recover. The "problem" here is that if something is over-saturated, too bright, or too dark, etc. a JPEG will just "compress" all the pixels that seem to be "alike" by making them effectively identical. When you later try to adjust the image by editing saturation, highlights, or shadows, you'll discover that the JPEG has clipped off all the detail and the area of the image is flat. This would not happen if you had shot in RAW.
RAW offers you the most control over your image. A RAW image is sort of like the "negative" in a film camera before it's been printed by the photo lab. The camera retains the original data as seen by the sensor at the time the image was captured and does not 2nd guess what the image was supposed to look like. It will make some adjustments, but it will not make any adjustments that are considered "destructive" to the original data. The files will not be compressed -- so the storage of each image will consume much more space on your memory card. Areas of an image that are too bright, too dark, saturated, or blown out and "appear" to be flat, may not actually be flat. You may actually be able to recover data by adjusting the photo -- this is because if too two pixels on the sensor appear to be nearly identical but are not actually identical, RAW will not compress them to be the same color (as JPEG would). It'll store the difference no matter how subtle. When you adjust the image, you may see the detail return.
HOWEVER... some things you may take for granted with a point-and-shoot will NOT be performed on a RAW image. For example, the camera will not attempt to de-noise the image. If you shoot in both RAW and JPEG then compare the results (without doing anything to either image) you should notice that the JPEG actually looks better. But that's because the JPEG was already processed and the RAW was not. After processing the RAW image, you may find that the RAW looks better. RAW is particularly better when you know you'll need to adjusting the images.
TIFF is non-lossy (like RAW) but unlike RAW, TIFF is a fixed standard. E.g. if you need to give someone a non-compressed non-lossy file so they can do more processing with it then you send them TIFF. If you send them RAW you're taking a chance that they wont have any software that can open the file. The "problem" with RAW is that it's more of a concept than a standard. Every model camera seems to have it's own variation on 'RAW' and that's why there's a delay in support from Apple & Adobe to add 'RAW' support for any new model that comes out.
