Exporting Sequence from FCP

Forum,
I sent part of a sequence from FCP to STP, but it's not in sequence anymore. It's broken back down into the original clips.
How can I edit in STP without losing the structure of the sequence that I spent so much time on?
Thanks,
Trey

I remember having to do a mixdown in each of my nests when dealing with this issue in 4.5.
You can also do an end-run around FCP's mis-management of the audio renders by manually throwing away the audio render files for the project in the finder and re-opening the project.
You might also try using the Advanced Format Conversion in Compressor, as that should ignore any pre-rendered material from your sequence.
Also, I have seen this problem when combining 44.1k audio (from a music CD) and 48k audio (from digital video) in the same 48k sequence. You might find it helps in the long run to re-export the CD audio as 48k and replace the music in your sequences.
Hope this helps -

  • Exporting text from fcp

I have a lot of separate text boxes in my sequence. Since I can' t do a spell check in fcp, I was wondering if i can export all the text boxes out as a plain text document to do a spell check.
I tried exporting as a xml document, but navigating through all the tags was quite a problem.
    TIA for any suggestions.

    Usual workflow is following.
    1. Put all Text-generator clips to one track
    2. Export sequence to XML
    3. Launch TitleExchange, point to exported XML and say where to put converted file.
Exporting to STL you'll get text file like that
    +00:01:27:26 ,00:01:29:26 ,They had this idea that+
    +00:01:29:30 ,00:01:30:31 ,behind scary+
... which you can open in any spell-checker.
We use TitleExchange to bring subtitles from FCP to DVD Studio and back (in case we need subtitled DVD and Betacam output)
Though, this may be much expensive way of checking spelling (135 Euro per TE licence).
There are lots of subtitle software, I only wanted to mention a way of exporting text from FCP with help of subtitle processors.

  • Problem importing Sequence from FCP 7 to Color 1.5!!!!!

I am trying to export a Sequence from FCP 7 into Color and am experiencing problems. When I send the Sequence to Color from FCP 7 Color receives the incorrect in and out points for many of the clips in my original FCP sequence. All of the footage being used was captured with the same settings from the same camera (Canon xha1). I have made all of the clips in my sequence that had basic motion effects into self-contained QT movies, so the basic motion ramping I've done shouldnt be a problem, right? There are no filters on the clips either. After hours and hours of searching, reading, and trial and error I cant figure out why Color will not recognize and play the clips as they appear in FCP. This is killing me and the project I am working on is due ASAP.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

In the Logging Info tab in Item Properties, the self contained QT movies I made have a TC Rate of 24 whereas the normal clips from the sequence have a TC rate of 30. Could this be the reason Color wont read the sequence correctly?
I have tried to remake the self contained QT movies with the Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 30p 48khz setting, yet still the TC Rate shows 24. What am I doing wrong?
You probably have "24" fps media on a 29.97 fps timeline, which would explain a few other things, especially why the in/out points are wrong on the COLOR timeline. COLOR does not look at express timecodes -- it functions like a good old fashioned EDL and works on durations -- so if the frame rate disagrees, the trims will also be incorrect.
I have no idea how you are making the self-contained QTs. Are you using Export QT, or Conversion? Are you manipulating the export settings in any way? Are you exporting from the timeline?
I myself am very disappointed with Apple's inability to cope with 23.98/29.97, because you are also dealing with three flavours of cadence/pull-down, not all of which are handled correctly, especially with ProRes.

  • NTSC to PAL - Export straight from FCP or use an mpeg file?

    I was reading this
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html
however it does not mention what to bring into compressor.
Should I export my ntsc sequence straight from FCP into compressor, or should I drag an ntsc mpeg file I aldeady made into compressor? Ive been trying the latter but can't do much as each step gives me the spinning beach ball for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks much.

Yes, you should export directly from FCP Using Compressor. Exporting to a heavily compressed MPEG-file, and then converting that from NTSC to PAL makes no sense. You would want your video to go through as few conversions/generations as possible.

  • Exporting quicktimes from FCP to iDVD?

I am having trouble exporting quicktimes from FCP and bringing them into iDVD.
How do you make Chapter Markers on an export from FCP?

When creating chapter markers, make sure nothing is slected within your timeline (click in a blank space before hitting m). Hit m again and click chapter marker button.
When exporting your sequence, be sure to select Markers > Chapter Markers on the export dialog popup.

  • Can the exported video from FCP X play in WMV?

    (1) Can the exported video from FCP X play in WMV?

No to both. You need third party software to create WMV. Telestream has tools for this.

  • Exporting TGA sequences from FCP

I have been successfully exporting targa sequences with embedded Alpha's from FCP using QT conversion. However, the compression that is automatically put on this, (which is probably RLE or LZW?) is creating individual targas with different file sizes, ie, 128kb, 72kb etc etc.
When exporting from AE you have the option to turn off the RLE compression which results in consistent file sizes, (about 1.6mb for D1 Pal frames). Does anybody know if it is possible to turn the compression off when exporting from FCP?

Shane helped me out, I was expecting the video on the screen to show in high quality. he explained that that's not how it works, video to the screen is not of the quality you get in the final export.

  • Can't export EDL from FCP sequence

I've been trying for days, weeks now, to export an EDL from my Final Cut Pro 6 sequence.  I keep getting the same error message:
The media files of one or more clips are missing reel names and may also be missing timecode tracks.  Proceeding with the export will result in an EDL that cannot capture or reconnect all the media used.
I went through all my clips and added reel names, went to Modify-->Timecode to give reel names and timecode to slugs and music tracks, and nothing seems to be working.  If I take just a piece, it works fine, but the whole thing just won't work, even though I've gone through it twice.  There is one clip that somehow (I don't know how) became variable speed.  There's actually a lot of speedramped clips and some SmoothCam slips that need to be reanalyzed. Could any of this be the problem?  It's driving me crazy. Help!

What are you using the EDL for?
What is the physical media the EDL is going to point to (tape, DAT, film, etc)?
An EDL is normally used to allow a computer to acquire the media necessary to build your sequence from physical media sources - and as such you would not want to be arbitrarily changing reel numbers and TC tracks, etc.
If your media is digital - camera files, audio files, etc, then you don't want to use an EDL to move the project from one computer to another, as the EDL would then not contain any useful information, other that edit durations.
If this is the case, you want to move your project by taking all your digital media to the new computer (on an external dirve{s}), and then open your FCP project and reconnect to those drives.

  • Export settings for sequence from FCP to Avid PC

    Hi,
Please can someone give me the best export settings/codecs to use if I need to export a FCP sequence with clips shot on XDCam EX1, 1920x1080i, 35 mbs at the least quality loss possible so that it can be imported into an Avid on PC for titling, effects and other bits added? My on-line editor is on Avid PC.
    Many thanks
    Belinda

    Hee....missed that final sentence somehow.
So...offlining imported footage on FCP that you will online in Avid? What is there to online? You imported at full resolution. Must be color correction.
OK then...you edit in FCP from imported XDCAM EX footage...and you intend to go to Avid for the final color correct and titling. Did you plan for this? Test this? because I am pretty sure that the QT files that were created when you imported with the transfer tool won't work on a PC. Unless you tested and they did. But it appears that they don't as you are asking how to get them there.
Did you not ask this question when you started this show? That is ALWAYS something you do. If you plan on doing a certain workflow, you have to make sure that the workflow in question will work. Offline and online from tape is fairly simple, as you can recapture from the tape...timecode being the big thing there. But this is IMPORTED footage. Full clips, and I don't see how you can import only what is used in a sequence.
This issue, coupled with FCP to Avid...and Avid on a PC no less. Well. Find a codec you can export from FCP that the Avid can read (this will require testing), then MEDIA MANAGE the footage to that codec. Hmm....but then how will the Avid read the FCP project file to reconnect to the footage?
Nope...I stand by my original answer. Output to XDCAM disk and recapture, or to HDCAM or HDCAM SR tape and recapture.

  • Exporting HD sequence from FCP

I have what people describe as line doubling when I export from FCP.
This happens if I use the SD DVD mpeg-2 preset in Compressor but it also appears even if I just create a self contained QT movie.
The impact is that perfect footage in FCP becomes very poor when exported
I looked through old posts and came across this:
    http://www3.telus.net/bonsai/Step-by-Step.html
The line doubling is just what I am seeing.
I tried the solution but it didn't solve the problem,.
I don't think Compressor is the problem - but I have no idea what is!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

Shane helped me out, I was expecting the video on the screen to show in high quality. he explained that that's not how it works, video to the screen is not of the quality you get in the final export.

  • Exporting Stereo from FCP

    Hi all,
I'm currently struggling with the output of a music video for broadcast. I am ultimately looking to create an MPEG IMX PAL quicktime.
    I am running FCP 7.0.2.
The problem I am having is that every time I output from FCP my stereo sound (which I can see has very slightly different waveforms on each channel) is being turned into two mono channels.
My export settings are always stereo in the quicktime dialogue box and I have also tried the sequence being set to "channel grouped" and "stereo downmix" before export with no joy. I have also made sure that "downmix" is not selected in the audio mixer.
This is slightly frustrating as I've never had this problem before and I'm hoing it's something simple I'm overlooking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

Thanks David, that seems to be what the problem was. I thought it might be something simple I was over looking.
Just to check for the future, does this always have to be the case for a track to be exported as stereo from FCP and there is no way of overriding it in the export?
I'm guessing that it is, but for my sanity I thought I'd best check.
    Thanks for your help

  • Exporting video from FCP scrunches it.

When I export my video from FCP it gets scrunched. Imagine that you start with a square and you export it and it comes out like a vertical rectangle. It looks correct in FCPs image and wireframe box, but it is not correct according to the title safe boxes. When I play the exported video it includes black space on both sider of the video. What can I do? I set the Motion project presets to NTSC DV (720 X 480) and FCP sequence settings to NTSC DV (3:2) (720 X 480) and I don't have the Anamorphic 16:9 checked. How can I export this without scrunching or squeezing it?

    Welcome to the family.
You can only go through your settings very carefully, one at a time. If the sequence is DV, the clips are DV, and the export is DV, the resulting file will be DV. Our experience around here is this question is 99.9% user error caused by the fact that FCP's various settings are weirdly conflicting with common sense or other parts of the process.
Good questions to answer: Why are you exporting out of FCP and where are you viewing this exported file?

  • Exporting .avi from FCP 3 / Opening FCP3 project in FCP 4

    Hello,
I am currently working on a project in FCP 3. I need to export an .avi-file for use in Adobe Encore on a pc. I have done this before and used the DVpal codec which worked ok, but with this project the image quality is not ok, mostly there seem to be small jumps in a sequence (is on the verge of not running smoothly.. sorry, hard to describe).
I tried all the other codecs I have (BMP, Cinepak, DVCPRO-PAL, DVCPRO50 and no compressor) and all either gave inacceptable image quality or the film does not run smoothly, or took several hours for rendering a 3 minute film.
Can anyone recommend a codec that gives decent image quality and does not take hours for rendering (I am working on a G3 900Mhz ibook). Is there maybe an mpeg2 codec I could use so that I could avoid recompressing in Encore?
I also tried importing the project into FCP 4 on a G4 1.5 Ghz Powerbook but cannot open the file. Is there any way to convert the project to FCP 4? I read about using the XML export for transferring from FCP 4 to 5 or vice versa, but FCP 3 does not have the XML option.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    ibook G3, 900 Mhz, 640mb ram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't know better than you, Randy, but I do have strong opinions.
OS X does tend to avoid file fragmentation, but that can only do so much, depending on how full the volume is and how much file deletion has taken place.
If the volume is very full, and you can't delete enough data to trim it down, the best thing to do is move/copy all the data to another volume, wipe the 1st volume, then move/copy all the data back. This is usually faster than using a defrag utility.
For best performance, keep your volumes less than 60% full. But I know guys who regularly run at 90 and 95% full without issue. So, go figure. And I know that conventional wisdom says to try to keep volumes less than 80% full. The thing is, when you benchmark a volume with a utility that measures throughput on the outer, inner, and middle tracks separately, you find that most hard drives will slow down when more than 60% full. NOTE: Not slow down terminally, but slow down by 10 to 20 percent or so.*
But the real answer to the defrag question is, don't worry about it . . . as Randy said.
    * If you do the math, you'll find that the read/write heads are exposed to about 1/2 of the surface area on the inner tracks as on the outer tracks in a given amount of time. FWIW.

  • Exporting MJPEG from FCP using aurora igniter

    Hi,
I'm using final cut pro 4.5 HD with an DVC PRO source file captured via firewire, and a watermark element on another video track. I'm trying to export the file as a quicktime movie using current settings, but I'm getting interlacing or field order problems on the exported video.
    My settings are as follows:
    Sequence Settings
frame size 720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
pixel aspect ratio NTSC/CCIR 601 DV
    Field DOminace: Upper Odd
    COmpressor: Aurora Mjpeg A
Aurora Advanced preferences: field order also set to upper
Any idea on why this happens? I've tried some other codecs in the compressor tab of the sequence settings (such as DVC Pro) and they export without any interlacing issues, but the quality is not as good.

Thanks James- simple enough and it worked.
A bit of a mystery why even the pro version of QT Player wouldn't just automatically pick up the anamorphic flag, as it does when you give it a file created using QT conversion from FCP?
Little things like this cause headaches. I find the documentation on this basic area of aspect ratio, that everyone has to deal with all the time, to be quite evasive or unclear on the whole and the terminology bizarre.
I assume once saved once with 'conform aperture' set to 'clean' it will always play in 16:9 on any QT player? The client won't have the Pro version of QT- that's for sure.
Thanks again very much for your quick help,
    Andrew

  • Help: Export format from FCP for DVD Studio

What settings do I export my 3 minute film so I can use DVD Studio Pro? (What size do I want if I want my film to be wide screen just like a professional DVD movie you buy at your nearest store?)
    Thank You!

In FCP, go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie. You can choose to make the file self-contained or not. Do NOT recompress all frames. The resulting file will be an exact copy of your Sequence in FCP.
Use that file in Compressor. Choose the appropriate preset for DVD. Compressor will create an MPEG-2 (.m2v) video file and an AC3 audio file. Use those two files in DVD-SP for authoring.
