Exporting sound-only files to the desktop

I extracted the audio and cut down a longer clip, deleting the video to leave only an audio segment behind. Then I tried to drag that audio clip to the desktop to create an AIFF file, but I found, when I opened the clip in itunes, that the sound from the whole clip was present, not just that segment I wanted. What can I do about this problem? I have seen posts mentioning "exporting" the audio to create a compressed file, but I only see an "import" option under the pull-down menu.

You may need QuickTime Pro for this suggestion. Open the aiff file in QT. Here you can trim the audio as required. I forget the exact terminology, but you can move the markers into position so that the segment you want is enclosed within the markers. Then you "Trim to Selection". This will delete the pieces outside the markers.
You could probably also do this in GarageBand, but I haven't tried this method personally.

  • When I move a file from the desktop to trash, the file only moves to the trash after I open the trash

So if I have a file on the desktop and I delete it, it makes the 'throwing it in the trash' sound but the trash can icon stays empty (if I don't already have something there) until I click on trash, and the file still appears to be on my desktop until I click the trash. If, after I've moved something to the trash, I then drag the file that seems to still be there around the desktop and drop it somewhere randomly, the file moves itself from the trash back onto the desktop! Can anyone help?
    Thanks, Dan

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have Time Machine setup to backup your hard drive? If so you can use it to recover the files.
If not you will need to use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. It lets you run the application to check the drive for files that can be recovered before having to purchase it. There are other similar applications out there also. You can go to VersionTracker.com and search for "file recovery" to get other possible apps.
There are recovery services that can do the job for you. They are pretty expensive but if you can't get the recovery application to work they are another option.
Try to use the computer as little as possible beforehand so you don't run the risk of overwriting the deleted files.

  • How do I deselect the box "open internet files on the desktop", to allow me to open tiles only in METRO view?

At some point or another I clicked "allow" for my firefox to cease opening windows in the app view of my Microsoft Surface Pro. They currently are only opening on the desktop view. How do i switch this back to the app view?

I'm sorry, but I tried what you said, but it did not work and I dont see how changing the pop-up configuration should affect my use of the firefox app. However, i do not understand much at all about this !
Let me rephrase my problem: even from the tiled start screen, if i click on the app icon, it brings me back to my desktop. I much prefer the app version of fire fox. The desktop view is hard to read because everything is tiny and i cant swipe to change between firefox screens.
Does this make sense at all?
With internet explorer it was as simple as Settings>internet options>programs> uncheck the box titled "open internet explorer tiles on desktop".

  • Cannot drag or copy files on the desktop and hard drives

I cannot drag (and therefore copy or move to trash or other drives, folders) any of my files, folders, application, pics, etc. All my programs open fine, and if I have a file on the desktop or in hard drive (I have 2) I can double click on file and it will open fine, but I cannot grab hold of anything and drag it to trash or to another folder, drive etc.
I have run disk utility and repaired permissions, but no luck so far. Only thing I think I did different recently is downloaded dvd 4 updater and tried to install it - however, I only had dvd 2.1 which I had just updated from dvd 1
Also - nothing shows up in the recent items folder even after applications are opened and I cannot access finder controls to re-launch etc.
    thanks, any suggestions much appreciated!

  • Preview pdf files in the desktop with Adobe Reader Touch .. is it possible?

preview pdf files in the desktop with Adobe Reader Touch
    .. is it possible?

Windows Store apps (including Adobe Reader Touch) do not offer the preview capability in the desktop environment.  That's just how Microsoft has set up.  So you need traditional desktop apps.
Because your operating system is Windows 8 (not Windows RT), you can find a lot of desktop apps that are compatible with Windows 7 and 8.  (For Windows RT, only built-in Microsoft Office products are available for desktop apps.  But that's not the case here.)
You can download Adobe Reader XI (which is also a free PDF viewer) from the following Adobe Reader download page
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
and install it on your Windows 8 desktop.  (Note for Windows RT users: Adobe Reader XI is not compatible with Windows RT.)
In case you have any questions about Adobe Reader XI (desktop app), you can visit the Adobe Reader forum.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ls -@Oaen | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

when I create a new folder on the desktop of my macbook pro, it is automatically populated with all of the files on the desktop, which I don't want.

I got the problem solved. It was pretty simple but new to me. I had evidently inadvertently switched the setting in the "View" tab on the dropdown menu so that all of my desktop folders were populated by all folders/documents residing on the desktop.
The solution was to open one of the folders, then go to the "View" tab and change the setting to "List." Presto, now all the folders include only the contents I had intentionally loaded into them.

  • Unattend.xml - 'creating' a file on the desktop

I'm trying to create a very simple file on the desktop through unattend.xml.  This file will only open IE to a particular webpage.  For some reason it's being totally ignored.  I have verified that this works when run at a command prompt.
This is running under oobeSystem pass under the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component.
    <FirstLogonCommands>
          <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">
            <CommandLine>CMD /C echo "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "servername/page" > "%userprofile%\Desktop\Deploy.bat"</CommandLine>
            <Description>Initial imaging link</Description>
    <RequiresUserInput>false</RequiresUserInput>
            <Order>1</Order>
          </SynchronousCommand>
        </FirstLogonCommands>
I've banged around with the command, tried dropping it in Public, some other things, but it just gets ignored regardless.  The rest of the oobeSystem pass is processed with no issues.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Also, I can no longer drag files to the desktop and the right-click contextual menu no longer appears when I right-click in the desktop.

  • Numbers file on the Desktop that does not exist??

I have a newly set up MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.2.  I have created a numbers file that is NOT saved on the Desktop.  I have an icon of that file on the Desktop and can select it but the file doesn't exist.  I have navigated to the folder as su in Terminal and the file doesn't exist. The icon shows on the Desktop though.
The numbers document you can see above the selected is the numbers document that I saved after I had seen what I have described above.  When I saved it there was no prompt to overwrite the file because.........it doesn't exist!!
    Ideas anyone??

I may be making a mistake by even mentioning this, but this may be a rare case for enabling the Root User to delete the file if that is what you want to do. In almost every case, it's not a good idea to tell people to enable Root. So other more experienced users may have other suggestions. But if you log in as Root, try to delete the file, then log back out of Root, you should be OK.   Carefully read here first about Enabling Root.

  • .pdf file on the desktop that cannot be deleted

I have a .pdf file on the desktop that gives me a "cannot be deleted" message when I try to delete it or drag to trash. It was downloaded from a "kosher" website. How do I get rid of it?

Open the terminal utility and type "sudo rm" followed by a single space. Then drag the file to the terminal window and press enter, followed by supplying your password when prompted.

  • Finder freezes after dragging a file to the desktop

I am finding the if I try to drag a file to the desktop, it seems to move the icon there, but then freezes up... you can't do anything with finder at all..? I go up to "Force Quit" and select to "Relaunch" Finder, and it resumes normal operation... My work around is to copy and paste things onto the desktop, them trash the original file... a poor solution, but I'm getting by.. any ideas??  Dave

    I appreciate the update DJ.
Next I would verify and repair the startup disk using the Disk Utility. This resource should help you do that, named:
Repair a disk - Disk Utility Help
Print this help page so you can refer to it later. (You don’t have access to Disk Utility Help when you restart your computer in the next step.)
In the Disk Utility Help window, click the Share button , then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts and you hear the startup chime, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
When the Apple logo appears, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, then click Continue.
In the sidebar, select the disk or partition you want to repair.
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.
If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.
If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.
If the issue is not resolved, I would next re-install Yosemite. This will not compromise your data:
Reinstall OS X - Mac Help
