Exporting Subtitle from DVD Studio Pro

Is there a way to export subtitles from DVD Studio Pro or Is there a tool somewhere that will generate an STL file from a DVD Studio Pro subtitle stream?
Thanks for your help!

Yes, other than the manual -- which I have exhausted. It gave me the coding for a text-based caption, and the coding for a graphic, but not the coding that would put both on the same clip (same time value).
However, I can manually go into the subtitle inspector and add whatever element (the text or the graphic) each with its own offsets, and have them appear flawlessly together. I am convinced there must be coding that generates this effect I can use in the STL file, but I have found nothing on the web, nor any of several downloaded manuals (including pp. 456 - 460).
Any advice?

Do you have an idea how can I export subtitles from DVD SP? I have created a few years ago subtitles for a documentary (PAL) and now they want it converted to NTSC. I was thinking on creating a new NTSC project and transferring the subtitles to it (hooping the placement won't change allot, and if so I'll just need to move it a bit. But I can't find a way to export the subtitles.

  • Subtitles using dvd studio pro

Hellos everyone, i was wondering if anyone could tell me how can i add subtitles on dvd studio pro? how can i add the option subtitles or to add the subtitles to a dvd? is there like a tutorial on how to do this?

hi this is really easy to do in DVD SP.
first create a menu card for subtitle. in that have buttons like
ON, OFF, PLAY, MENU. as per your requirements
and you need to do small scripting works for ON & OFF
    ON button scripting.
add new script from the tab.and in the script editor add the following script
    set system streamst(subtitle stream1)(on)
    jump(subtitle menu- play button)
jump can be as your choice. this script will activate the subtitle
    OFF button scripting.
add new script from the tab.and in the script editor add the following script
    set system streamst(subtitle stream1)(off)
    jump(subtitle menu- play button)
this script will deactivate the subtitle stream.
make sure you assign the scripts to the desired buttons

  • Blurry Text from DVD Studio Pro

Hello, I've created 4 'slide show' type presentations in motion 2. Project settings are:
    Width: 1360
    Height: 768
    Bit Depth: 8 Bit
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720, 1440x1080) 1.33
    Field Order: None
    Frame Rate:59.94 fps
    Render Settings:
    Motion Blur: Samples: 8
    Shutter Angle: 360
    Output: Antialiasing Method: Best
I've tried many many compression settings:
    MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16/9.m2v
    Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC.mov
Importing raw motion files into DVD Studio Pro
All of the resulting dvds burned from DVD Studio pro look pixelated and blurry when played on a dvd player onto a Toshiba 32HL86. Unfortunately its an SD dvd player connectedt to the tv, so not sure if that has a major impace.
    DVD Studio Pro Settings are:
    Project: SD DVD
    Video Standard: NTSC
    General:
SD DVD Menus, Tracks and Slideshows:
    Display Mode: 16:9 Letterbox
    Encoding:
    MPEG-2-SD
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    Field Order: Auto
    Mode: One PAss VBR
    Bit Rate: 6.8
    Max Bit Rate: 8.0
    Motiion Estimation: Best
I am at my wits end, can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm not an expert, but have recently had similar problems with graphics that had text, black lines, lots of contrast, and movement. They looked great on HD but when I made a SD DVD, they were very blocky and pixellated - completely unusable. After lots of experimentation, I've finally got an acceptable dvd. Went back to my original shots - in Final Cut, (I'm not sure if you can do this in Motion) and carefully applied a little Gaussian Blur (.25 to1) to each according to how badly they pixellated. Also adjusted blacks and whites so they weren't so contrasty. Then made my mpeg with Compressor - two pass vbr, 6.8 mbps, best motion estimator. The Gaussian Blur seems to break up the areas that get blocked up and pixelated. SD dvd is such a lousy low resolution medium anyway, that it doesn't seem to result in any focus problems and helped most shots - I've even gone back and applied it to some of the regular footage that was pixellating. It was a lot of work, you may want to see if an expert weighs in on this.

  • How do I prevent errors importing foreign characters into subtitles for DVD studio pro?

How do I prevent errors importing foreign characters into subtitles for DVD studio pro?
I have figured out just about everything necessary for creating subtitle tracks in several foreign languages, but the only problem is that some individual characters in some languages (like the "open quotation mark" symbol in Lithuanian!) do not import properly into the subtitle track.  I can type or paste the symbols in manually, but this means doing it hundreds of times in several different languages, and defeats the purpose of using the system I've created.
Does anyone know how to import some of these odd characters.
I import characters using a text file saved in Unicode-16, and I set the language of the track to the proper language (for instance, Lithuanian).
I can't find the answer anyway, and really am stumped!!
    Thank you!!

i think i might have figured out a solution.  it's a quirk in the program.  i noticed that sometimes the quotation marks DO actually import, but only if they are in the middle of a sentence.  they only FAIL to import at the beginning of a sentence.  so, what i did was to paste a space before the beginning of every sentence with a weird low-down quotation mark, and it imported fine.
and it also seems to kill two birds with one stone, because sometimes it seems that DVD studio pro cuts off a few pixels at the beginning of a line -- so with a space inserted it just cuts off...nothing.
so far so good.  thank you for trying to help, Tom.  MUCH APPRECIATED.  this stuff can be very frustrating.  i'm already going bald fast enough....erg.

  • Importing subtitles into DVD Studio Pro 4 that were created FCP Studio 6

    Greetings!
So in all the DVD Studio Pro 4 documentation, I couldn't find any work flow that allowed you to create subtitles, via *Text or Boris 3D Titles* in Final Cut Pro Studio 6 and then export or import your work into DVD Studio Pro to be used in the subtitle fields... Is that possible?
After painstakingly entering in subtitles for a feature film line-by-line, timing them perfectly to picture and making them look beautiful with crisp-text & a slight drop-shadow... It would be wonderful to import those files (as graphics files? DVD Studio Pro can import those...) in our DVD for release, with optional subtitles-- Instead of making/encoding 2 versions; with & without subtitles.
What is the best way to export these files, created for the film subtitling in *Text or Boris 3D Titles* so that we can import them into DVD Studio Pro 4 subtitle tracks... Could they be exported with an Alpha Channel so that the background is transparent? And will this then be excepted into DVD Studio Pro 4 to be placed in the subtitle fields?
Please help us conquer this seemingly-necessary procedure... I would really hate to think that to achieve this task we'd have to re-enter, re-design & re-time ALL subtitles to make our DVD... All of your suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

OK-- I love that I've found a way to answer my own question on this forum (but actually I must credit my buddy James for finding out about 'TitleExchange Pro') It looks pretty cool and should do exactly what I've asked about: Exporting/ Importing subtitles made in FCP to DVD SP...
TitleExchange Pro is a unique tool which makes complicated things simple.
If you ever wished to get your titles out of FCP into DVDSP (or another DVD authoring application), get titles into FCP from another source like DVDSP or STL, or ceate a QT with all your FCP subtitles without the need of rendering (and get automatic selection of language) or just "equalize" your FCP titles TEP will be the right tool.
There's a slight catch but it might be worth it, if this works as well as it states...Cost 135 EUR:) You can download a limited demo version that works for 30 days & 50 titles...If anyone wants to give their feedback on this software, please post it here-- We'd all be interested.
Download & more information about this process at: http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/
Also, check out this video tutorial on the product... It explains exactly how to do the task-at-hand... http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/finalcutpro/f/mtutorials/6851.html
Hope this finds you all well--

  • Exporting Themes to DVD Studio Pro

OK...so here's what I'm trying to find out: is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro? Or can I build the project in DVDSTPRO and import it to iDVD to build and burn?
I've read several threads here and haven't come across my specific question. If I missed it, please copy me a link. Otherwise, I'd like to use the templates/themes in iDVD with my FCP project.
I was thinking about importing the project from FCP to iDVD. Then, I thought about the markers etc....
So, if anyone had an idea, tip or link, I'm all for it!
    Thanks!
    ron

I've heard of older themes being imported into DVDSP with some success. Newer themes may pose an issue however. This is only a guess but I suspect they be exclusive to iDvd. You'd have to rebuild them within DVDSP and re-establish each link. Might want to post this same question to the DVDSP Forum also for a complete answer to your question. Good luck on this and feel free to keep us posted.

  • Jagged text from DVD studio pro

    Hi,
I have created a number of sequences in Final Cut Pro and in the beginning of each sequence I have added a text (chapter name) with the font Zapfino.
When exporting to quicktime in 720 x 1280 the type looks beautiful when I play back the .mov file.
I am importing my sequences to DVD studio pro for playback on television .
The type from Final Cut looks pixelated, jagged and terrible after the encoding. I added text in DVD pro to the menu page. That text looks fine.
I can not find a setting in DVD pro that looks like it will render the text better.
I have heard that the interlacing can damage text.
    Can anyone help?
I created my menu page in Photoshop with a image that is 720 x 1080 pixels in 72 dpi.
The first time around I created a title in Photoshop. That one looked terrible as well.
Secondly I created the title in DVD pro and as mentioned that looks good.
Do you recommend higher resolution than 72 dpi for a menu page?
    Thank you on beforehand.
    ggaarde

    Sorry I meant to say that my PS image was 720 x 1280 (not 720 x 1080)
It shouldn't be that size if you are making a SD DVD Menu. If you have later versions of Photoshop start a new blank project with pixel aspect ratio on for what you are doing (NTSC 4:3, NTSC 16 x 9 ) etc.
Other take a look at the guidelines in the manual for creating menus (For NTSC 4:3 720 x 534 and rescale to 720 x 480 without constraining proportions.) You are best off rescaling outside DVD SP and not letting DVD SP scale.

  • Aspect ratio problem in Windows Media Player for DVD from DVD Studio Pro

So I made a DVD with DVD Studio Pro and it looks good in Apple's DVD Player, on an Insignia DVD player appliance and on Playstation 2. Both the movie and the deleted scene were 16:9 from camera to Final Cut Pro and they show that way in all these players.
But on Windows Media Player for Windows XP, the program thinks the movie is 4:3 and the deleted scene is 16:9. Nero's Showtime has the same exact behavior, but at least you can force aspect ratio on Nero.
Besides being longer, the movie is different from the deleted scene in that the movie was originally out of Final Cut Express on an older Mac and it was encoded big endian. The deleted scene was output from Final Cut Pro and encoded little endian. I didn't think it would make a difference, but I tried outputting the movie from Final Cut Pro on the newer Mac and it did come out little endian. I took that into DVD Studio Pro, got rid of the old VIDEO_TS folder and re-built the project, burnt a new DVD. Then I went back to Windows and...
...the same exact problem. Some of the people I give this DVD to will be using Windows Media Player to view it, which is why I want this to not be an issue at all. What am I overlooking?

Look, everyone here (who each have been creating DVDs for over a decade) is telling you the same story. WMP is buggy. Everyone in the industry knows that. Hardware manufacturers like Dell and HP, know that. Why don't you use the DVD player program that they put on the hard drive? Sure one "Hollywood" title works. Did I mention that WMP is buggy? Test a thousand titles, and I'm certain that you will find some discs have problems on WMP, and WMP alone. (And it isn't my assertion that Hollywood DVDs have issues in WMP, everyone is telling you that.) No one has a solution for this, except to not use WMP. Let me repeat once again, no one has a solution for this except to not use WMP. It is impossible to add any sort of programming to the disc that will detect which player is being used to play the disc and compensate for the problems of that player.
Let me put it this way, if you have a disc that plays fine on Zeus's device, and on Apollo's device, and on Hera's device, and on Hermes' device, and on Artemis' device, but you have problems with Athena's device, then logically, Athena's device has a problem... not the disc. Your own experience has proved this to be true. If you were having problems with every device used, THEN you could rightfully say that there is a problem with the disc.

  • Error burning to LaCie drive from DVD Studio Pro 3...

Whenever I attempt to burn a DVD to my LaCie d2 DVD+-R drive, using DVD Studio Pro 3, I get an 'error #6' and the burn is unsuccessful. At the 'formatting' stage the process hangs up after a couple of minutes and returns an error message with the following text:
"The recording device reported error #6: Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred. (0x29, 0x00.)"
Has anyone else experienced this? I have used both DVD+R and DVD-R discs. I have used the device on two different G4s--a 733MHz, and a dual-1.25GHz. I have worked with the source files on the hard drive, as well as on an external drive. The size of the project is nowhere near capacity for a DVD.
But the result is always the same: Burn aborted, 'error #6.' I'm at my wit's end. Thanks for any suggestions or insight...

    hey terry
you say you are directly burning from DVDSP to your lacie drive, correct? is it an internal drive? did you recently replace your drive?
if it is, go to "about your mac" on finder and click on "more information".
look at your ATA and or "burner" (something to that effect) and make sure that is "vendor supported" because if it is not, iTunes, DVDSP and iDVD will have problems burning media directly from those apps.
the easiest way to fix this is with "patchburn". it will make your drive compatible or "supported" by able and you will have NO problems buring.
question: do you have another burning program (such as toast)? do you have problems burning from the finder?

  • Poor image quailty from DVD Studio Pro

    Hello,
I produced a 17minute DVD a few years ago, shot SD with a Panasonic DVX 100a.  Edited in Final Cut Pro 6.  They have asked me to burn a couple more DVD's for them.  When I imported the assets 2 pass M2v & ac3 audio and burned the DVD with a bit rate of 6.5 to 7. the image quality is really low.  I previously ran all FCP through Compressor, Highest quality, best etc.
Someone told me that going back to FCP and using a de-interlacing filter applied to the project would help with image quality.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I know that going to a DVD will never look as good as my sweet 27" monitor, but the image seems blown out (hot) and the colors unsaturated and a bit too grainy.  It seems more so then I remember the project looking. I am using DVD Studio 4.
So is there any steps that can help me have a SD project edited in Final Cut Pro 6... use Compressor... 2 pass highest quailty 90 min DVD... to DVD Studio Pro 4 and get the best quality I can get.  I appreciate any guidance you can give me.
    Thanks,
    Jan

You may find that Photoshop does a better job of resampling down to your SD PAL resolution. When DVDSP resamples down from your 1024x576 file, you are at the mercy of the hardware or software rendering in DVDSP, depending on your DVDSP prefs. Ideally, I'd work in Photoshop at 720x576, and use the pixel aspect ratio correction to correct the preview aspect ratio in Photoshop.
