Exporting Tiff from Aperture

Hi,
I notice several threads about exporting, many seem to be people experiencing particular problems. My question is fairly simple and is about how to ensure the images I want to export are the best quality possible, assuming that they originated as RAW/DNG files or TIFF files. This would generally be for print or for online storage.
So in the image export box should I select:
8 or 16 bit TIFF
Image quality 12 ( my image slider is set to 12 but always appears greyed out?)
Original size
300dpi
In addition, should I use these settings regardless of whether the image is cropped etc? What is the point of fitting within a certain number of pixels, inches or cms - when and why would I choose to do that rather than just selecting "original size".
hope you can help
Jon

DPI has no bearing on the image quality of an image-format file.  It is a stand-alone metric that some programs used to use to determine how many screen-inches an image should use.  Even when printing, the DPI setting is ignored (you set the physical dimensions of the print area and your computer distributes the available pixels over that area).
PPI — pixels per inch — is useful when estimating the quality of print before it is printed.
You can, with all up-to-date software, simply ignore DPI.
That shouldn't obscure the rest of your answer, which is spot-on:  for maximum file quality for an image-format file, save to TIFF format set to 16-bits, and don't change the size (either larger or smaller).
OP:  For archival purposes, save the RAW original.  That's what programs such as Aperture and Lightroom are all about:  non-destructive editing.  Saving two files (the RAW original and a text file of instructions specifying how you want it altered) and the program that reads them and combines them into an Image will give your higher quality, and much greater latitude in the future (as long as you have a machine that runs the program) than saving a single 16-bit TIFF file.
Aperture _is_ a great archive.  I only export to use files in other programs.  My digital archive consists of copies of my Aperture Library, stored securely off-site.

  • When I export photos from Aperture, the pixel dimensions are halved thus losing data.  I have set the export preferences to export at original size, to no avail.  This happens even if I just drag to the desktop and then back, or if I export into my iphoto

When I export photos from Aperture to desktop or iphoto I lose pixels.  The pixel dimensions are halved, despite setting the export preference to export at original size.  Anyone know why or how to correct this?

Dragging an Image from Aperture exports the Preview.  Preview parameters are set on the Previews tab of Aperture preferences.
Are you seeing the same results when you export using one of the export commands?
Is so, confirm that the settings in the selected Image Export Preset ("Aperture➞Presets➞Image Export") truly represent those in the Image Export Preset's name.

  • Trouble maintaining original "date taken" info and metadata when exporting TIFFs from original CR2 files.

When exporting TIFFs (from original RAW), I noticed my metadata said the "date created" was the day of export. I want to be able to access the date the original image was taken as opposed to the day I exported it. Is there a way to maintain original date of image taken in my info? I couldn't seem to find it after I exported my TIFFs...

I just tested this with LR 5.5 Mac OS 10.9.3 and it works correctly for me.
    To troubleshoot your problem:
    1. Which version of LR and which platform (Mac, Windows)?
    2. Which tool or command are you using to examine Date Created of the exported TIFF?
    3. Upload a sample TIFF showing the problem to Dropbox or similar and post the URL here. This will allow us to take a look in detail.

This is now the second big Problem with using Apple's Appeture with NO apparent FIX...
Aperture has NO DIRECT way to Burn to a CD/DVD & apparently NO way to RE-SEQUENCE the numbering system????
ANYONE... I wish APPLE would address/fix these 2 problems... LIGHTROOM I guess is next?

    Hi David,
Coming in and whining loudly is rude.  We are all volunteers here, voluntarily sharing our expertise so that users like you can make the most of their time with Aperture.  Speaking just for myself:  although I do care about your success with software (it's why I'm here), I don't care what software you use.  If you want to use Lightroom, do so, and post your questions in an appropriate forum.
Burning files to a CD is a file operation done at the system level (it is built into OS X).  Aperture lets your create sharable image-format files from your Images.  You then use OS X's tools to burn those files to a CD.  Iirc, you can set up a "Burn Folder" in Finder, into which you can export files created from your Images, and with a single click burn your CD.
Naming the files you create by exporting your Images can be tricky.  There are _many_ possibilities.  Some things can't be done.  Sequencing can be done in a number of ways (see Léonie's answer above).  What have you tried?  What was the result?  In what way did this differ from what you expected?

  • Exporting photos from Aperture to a windows OS and Lightroom

I exported several jpg files with exif and some IPTC data,  including my name, in the Creator field. I am using OS 10.6.8. When Lightroom, operating in a Windows environment, attempts to import the files, there are undesired quote marks on the Creator name. Everything else looks good. What's going on, and is there something I can do to eliminate the quote marks?

In Aperture select the images you want to export in the Browser,
then select File > Export > Versions from the main menu bar.
In the Export panel select an Export prset with the pixel size and file format you want, and use the file chooser to direct the exported files to a folder on the external drive.

  • What's the best way to export Photos from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
    so heres the deal:
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
So to get his photos i thaught i could just copy his aperture library onto my external hd.
but will i be able to import the photos into iphoto? and i'd like to not have the originals but the edited photos.
or will i have to export the photos from aperture (e.g. with my brothers, faster mac...)

Paul, do your father and you have compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture?  Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3 or later?
Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
With the new, unified library architecture you can simply open an Aperture library in iPhoto - no need to import anything.
If the Aperture library is not compatible, from an older Aperture version, you can try to export the versions on your brother's mac (file > Export > Versions).
My father has a really old/slow mac and whenever he tries to export more than like 3 photos from aperture the computer freezes.
That is not normal, however old the mac is.
Either his hard drive is too full and needs freeing disk space, or he has imported corrupted images, or his Aperture library needs repairing or rebuilding.  He should try to repair his library, if he has used "force quit" on Aperture.  See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Print quality poor when exporting tiff from Ai

I recently sent an Illustrator file to FedEx Office to be printed and it just didn't look great. What do I need to fix (other than getting a real printing company! ) in order to get a higher print quality?
    This is what I did:
Created a file in Illustrator then exported it as a tiff. (I needed it cropped and didn't like what I got by cropping it using the Pathfinder steps/options.)
Placed the tiff file in a new Illustrator file.
    Printed it as a pdf.
The pdf version of my illustration was horrid, so I had them print it from the Illustrator file. It was considerably better, but still had diagonal stripes (gradient) and vertical stripes (printing).
How can I remedy this problem?

    Clipping Mask
Draw a closed path over the objects you want to maswk or crop, in this case probably a rectangle using the rectangle tool.
then select all the objects and the shape to be used as a mask.
    then go to Object>Clipping Mask>Make
BTW Scott's answer shouldbe marked as the answer.

  • Colour loss when exporting jpeg from Aperture 2.1

I'm having a problem with colour loss in images i'm trying to export to a website. These are jpegs that have been worked on as RAW in Aperture, when exported to desktop and viewed in preview there is no colour loss at all, but when viewed on the site the colour saturation seems very dull and lack lustre - any ideas?? I have checked all the export presets (been going through all the posts to see if i could pickup anyone else finding the same) and they are all at the same settings. Thanks

Go to the tools menu and then assign profile. Choose the display profile that your monitor is using. This will effectively stop preview from doing any translation to your monitor. See if this matches what you are seeing when you upload to the web. If it does then somewhere in your upload, process, web server chain the profile is being removed from the jpg or the browser you are using ignores color profiles (most windows browsers ignore image color profiles, that's why adobeRGB profile images look like crap to most windows users when viewed in Explorer)
Ps if this is the case nothing is wrong you are just getting a preview of how most windows users will see your image on the web. Adjust to taste.

  • Exporting Photos From Aperture to Photoshop Elements for Layer-Editing

Back when I paired iPhoto with PSE to do layer editing, it was easy to export the first layer-picture from iPhoto, then click-and-drag the second photo directly on top of the first in PSE, then 'stretch to fit'.
I've since moved to Aperture 3, and although I can 'edit in Photoshop Elements' the first picture, I can't drag or export so that it superimposes ready for opacity adjustment and effects...

What happens if you select both images in Aperture, and then click to Edit in External Editor?

  • Exporting TIFFs from Lightroom 5 to Photoshop CC. Banding problem.

I get this annoying problem with color banding when i export 16bits TIFFs ProPhoto RGB (with no compression) from Lightroom to Photoshop CC. Both LR and PS working space is set to ProPhoto RGB color space. Miraculously, the banding dissapears when i convert to Adobe RGB or sRGB. Theres no banding in Lightroom, only in Photoshop. I have encountered others with the same problem, but no one have come up with a solution. Is there a solution to this problem?
    Best wishes

  • Export size from aperture to photostream

Is there any way of configuring what size of image is uploaded to the photostream?
As a DSLR user using large RAW files in aperture, when I tested the photostream option it doesn't give you an export size, it seems to copy the full size image over which took an absolute age for 4 images.
If it's going to take that long, it kind of defeats the object of having it in the first place, as I wanted just small versions to be able to view and show people on my iPad.
    Any help would be appreciated.

As I have read from MacCreate.com and as I have tried and tested, Photo Stream on Aperture 3 uploads the native files to iCloud. So if you import RAW only files, it uploads RAW and pushes it to your devices. I imported some RAW photos on my iMac yesterday, when I open up my MacBook this morning it downloaded the same RAW files.
MacCreate suggested though if you import RAW + JPEG into Aperture, it will only upload the JPEG version.

  • Exporting Tiffs from an .avi Movie

    Hey everyone,
I'm having some difficulty figuring out how to export a scene from an .avi movie as a series of single frame tiffs.
I have a movie in ,avi format that I need to go into each frame in photoshop (do a lot of rubber stamping), than reassemble the tiffs back into a movie...
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Simply drag&drop the AVI onto the render queue panel, then adjust the settings. Read the details about Rendering and Exporting on the online help.
