Exporting to Compressor, unexpected results.

I think I have the simplest motion file in the world. Black logo art in ai, tagged as black, brought into Motion. (I tried both an ai, as well as a pdf format.) In Motion, I am colorizing the art to white. That's all. The background preference for the project is set to black, so I have white titles on black. I also have type set in motion, white on black.
When I export from Motion, things are Ok. All looks as it should. As soon as I 'Export Using Compressor' mysteries appear. I can see the art in the preview window, and it looks darn nice. But when I export (I've tried a few different codes) all I get is black, even though it takes time to render. Just black...Not even the Motion white type is coming through.
Any clues to this mystery?
(Brand new install of leopard and FCS 2 on a fresh disk.)

Thank you for your response.
FLV support isn't part of the basic Quicktime package
used by iMovie. Did you add something from Adobe?
No, I added nothing. The Movie to FLV option appears in the pull Export pull down menu. The lack of iMovie support for FLV explains it in a way, but odd don't you agree that it would somehow find and duplicate another swf file. Hmmm.
I use VisualHub to convert my movie files into SWF
Flash video files (FLV is also supported).
I've been using Video2SWF. Might be useful (though I'm not sure why) to have FLV functionality. I'll look at VisualHub
Thanks again

  • FCP CRASHES WHEN I EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR... Please help.

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to export my FCP sequence to compressor through FCP and not through a Self Contained Movie, because I hear it produces better results. I Export to compressor and Compressor loads the project and begins to compress... it gets through the audio, and I would guess 75% of the video and FCP crashes. I've tried to do this now 6 times with the same results.
My project is a Panasonic HD 720P and is about 32 minutes long. I don't know if that info will help, but does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks guys, and gals...

    hi,
i can only guess here as you have not provided any information about the crashing itself. Is it Unexpected Error, then a quit; is it a lock up without an error message?
    Things to look for:
    1. Check that the sequence is appropriate for the format you are editing... it is likely that it is as FCP auto checks it on first clip assemble. Check anyway.
    2. Check that the media you are compressing is COMPLETE.. check each scene in the sequence.. sounds like you may have a dodgy scene/media. This would seem likely if you are experiencing crashing always at the same place during compression.
    3. Check to see if you accidently put in any compression markers... take these ALL OUT if you dont need them
    4. Check compressor.. compress a small file of the same format (different scenes) to check compressor is functioning. This also may help you narrow down your dodgy media if there is any.
Hope this is of some help.
    Good Luck.

  • Exporting via Compressor - submit - failed

When I use Export via Compressor - and I use QT Pro Res - and destination is Movies Folder, then submit - then in the History window it has returned "Failed" 3 times now. The status bar shows, but never any indication that it even starts to work its magic or anything - just after a few seconds, maybe a minute, the word Failed appears. Argh. The motn project is 5 minutes long full of stills and a little video with audio. Help - what am I doing wrong?
In looking thru this forum, I thot the best export would be QT ProRes - is that causing the failure?
I previously exported via QT(not compressor) and the resulting file is 10gb which doesn't run smoothly but jerks and hiccups like a pre-rendered file. And 10gb wont fit onto DVD which is where this project will go - as a gift.
    help

I surely do not take it personal. I have learned that you folks in this group are the best resource I have. I know I am in way over my head. I truly do not know about codecs.
I have taken Motion directly in to FCP - but I didn't think it would work this time. I should have tried.
Someone came along at work and told me to use Visual Hub and use setting for mp4, and also try using the DV - ready for FCP - I did both. I really never think of it as wasted effort if I can learn by what I doing, and that is occurring as you are all explaining to me what I should be doing.
Now as for workflow - I think I did the right thing by starting with Motion, then with the big file sizes went to Visual Hub - but probably could have just gone to opening the Motion files in FCP - then rendering out for DVSP.
System settings are a boggle to me - so I just use NTSC - DV 720x480 and hope that works - so far the results in my projects are good.
Again, Thank you for taking time to explain - I appreciate all comments.

Compressor 4 crashes on opening keep getting this warning: The application “Compressor” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again? Tried Restoring windows. It crashes again.  Tried not = Same result.  This is the first time I've actually used the app although I purchased it back in April (I think).  I had my first longform project completed in FCPX and tried sending it to Compressor 4 and got this result over and over again.

    Steve,
Sorry to say I've not had any success in getting Compressor 4 to work.  I've tried every suggestion mentioned earlier on this topic to no avail.  Compressor 4 is dead in the water.  On the last two projects I had to go back to Compressor 3.x.xx to complete the projects.  The only hint that I have of wha may have happened concerns something I did early on.  When I bought this computer I decided to replace the hard drive with a larger one.  Since I already had my software up and working on the drive that came with the computer I decided to clone everything to the new larger drive.  As I recall, Compressor 4 worked on the original drive but it doesn't work on this cloned version.  So maybe there is a relationship there.  I haven't had a chance yet to reinstall my old drive and see if C 4 works on it.  If it does work then I know the source of the problem but not how to fix it on the new drive.  Did you do anything like cloning your drive recently too?  It's just a thought and may not lead anywhere but later this week when I catch a break I'll give the old drive a try and will post my results.
    Thanks,

  • FCP Export using Compressor hangs 'em both

I searched for the answer earlier this week. Didn't find anything, but I eventually figured it out. Here was my problem:
The Compressor preferences allow you to choose a default preset. I never had defined a default preset, and things worked fine. When I do choose a default preset (I chose DVD Best Quality: 120min: All), there were problems. Selecting sequences in FCP and doing "Export using Compressor" results in a hang on both apps.
The number of sequences or their lengths seem to have no effect on the process. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same problem.
    Alan

This sounds different from my problem. I was getting a hang when the sequences were being added to the batch list. It wouldn't even give me a chance to submit the batch. Maybe someone else has a clearer idea of what you're experiencing.

  • Compressor fails when using FCP "export to Compressor"

I have a 6-minute long, ProRes422 (HQ) project that I'm trying to export uncompressed.
I'm trying to avoid the typical "Export QuickTime Movie" function because I get awful gamma shift issues.  The colors are washed out and the image just looks like complete garbage compared to what I'm seeing in my FCP canvas.  When I export using Compressor, the issue is a lot less severe.
Now, when I export a small part of the project using Compressor at ProRes422 (HQ) settings--say, a few seconds or so--it exports just fine.
But when I try and export the entire sequence, things get wonky.  It starts exporting and the progress bar churns along ... then the project bar goes blank and the time reads, "Unknown time remaining" ... then the progress bar starts again ... and then again, blank with "unknown time remaining."  Finally it just gives up and says, "Failed."
I have no idea what's causing this problem--but I've tried exporting to ProRes422 (HQ) 6 different times, and it has failed every time.  I've exported the same sequence to H264, using Compressor, with no problems at all.
    Thoughts?

Hi chris, have u made any progress with this? If not, then it's worth trying to isolate the problems to transcode your distribution on compressor.app?
    Questions:
    1) Despite your reluctance :) ,  to export a master from FCPX as part of your workflow, does FCPX render the storylines (project) out completely? And .. Then...
    2) does the project play back from within FCPX to your satisfaction?
If not then determination of issues should be directed to the elements , objects and effects n transforms you used for your FCPX project composition
Else, If 100% expectation from FCPX as a above,  Then proceed to compressor And Qmaster problem determination.
As posted many times in this forum, a workflow involving a "send to compressor" from with FCPX etc, involves building a transient master to hand off to compressor.
It's possible that the compressor and Qmaster structures in your home directory are corrupt and it's very simple to fix.
And yes, FCPX CANNOT take advantage of a qmaster cluster  when submission of the transcode is made directly from FCPX.... (Old news)
    So..
Look in /var/logs (console.app) for any obvious errors as well.
Check out this thread for example.. 3rd or 4th post down...(there anew many similar procedures in these forums) ..
Preserve your settings and destinations from compressor if u have than  Just clean out the Compressor and Qmaster structure... Reset Qmaster if u intend to use it.

  • Export using Compressor crashes Motion

    Motion 2.1.2
This problem seems to have surfaced out of nowhere. When using the commandshifte command to export from Motion using Compressor, Motion crashes. Every time. Was fine yesterday and have not done any software updates since. Can export directly out of Motion (but need to do a batch). Trashed Motion and Compressor prefs and repaired permissions. Compressor fires up on its own just fine.
    Help?

Export to Compressor using any ProRes format does not work.
If anyone would like me to upload the project I can, but it'll be a big one if I "collect media."
Bottom line, this workflow works in Compressor 3.0, 3.0.1,2 but not 3.0.3. It gets a strange pixelation that is unusable.
I cannot describe my dissatisfaction with Apple right now. My business runs on FCS2 and I have had to start this project (which is on a strict timeline.. aren't they all?) from scratch because there is no way out of this bug. The forward compatibility is another issue altogether, which irritates me beyond description.
I have noticed on these boards, that I often do some unique work and no-one experiences the "exact" same problems I encounter. I do tend to push the limits of what FCS can do, but I am not extraordinary by any means. I simply use it the way it's intended.
Exporting from Motion, using compressor, is the best way to format my graphics for my FCP timeline as I have to export many graphic sequences that need to match my FCP sequence settings. There is no reason the "export to compressor" using a custom compression ProRes preset should result in mangled motion graphics.
TO APPLE: Come the **** on. This is YOUR compression algorithm.
Please if anyone has anything to add here I'm welcome to suggestions.
Currently the only thing I can do to alleviate the problem is to roll-back to FCS/Compressor from disc and re edit my entire sequence.
    **** poor. **** poor.

  • Quality differences between "Export Using Compressor..." and Drag & Drop

There are quite a few people out there discussing the 24p workflow for the new Canon HV20 (on hv20.com, dvinfo.net, etc.). The HV20 can shoot 24 progressive frames/sec, but stores them as 29.97 interlaced HDV on tape, with an arbitrary cadence.
One of the better workflows is to capture into FCP using HDV over Firewire, and use Compressor to extract the progressive frames from the interlaced. Its Reverse Telecine seems to automatically figure out the cadence. I've been testing this using the "Other Workflows > Apple Codecs > Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material (HQ)" preset, with the following modifications, Frame Controls: On, Deinterlace: Reverse Telecine, Frame Size: 1920x1080.
    That's just background.
The problem is this. If I export the HDV clip from FCP, "Export > Using Compressor...", the resulting 24p footage is extremely high quality. However, if I drag & drop the HDV clip directly into Compressor, or set up a Compressor droplet (arguably more straightforward for batch conversions), the resulting footage has obvious resizing artifacts (jaggies).
Obviously, I'm keeping everything consistent setting-wise, and have thoroughly examined the resulting .movs. The only difference is the actual image quality.
    Anyone seen anything like this?
I'm less concerned about this specific workflow than I am about Compressor producing non-identical results from identical footage with the same settings, dependent on your chosen workflow...
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

What I need to know if it is a dramatic different in quality that I should use DVD Pro instead of iDVD.
If you want a DRAMATIC improvement in quality, shoot sharp, high quality content like Hollywood (usually on film) and have it compressed by high quality hardware encoders.
There is a good reason Hollywood DVDs look better than iDVD/DVD Studio Pro DVDs.

  • Export Using Compressor from FCP fails every time

When I try to use the File>Export>Using Compressor command in FC Studio 2, everything seems normal until I submit the batch. But the job fails every time.
I get the following message: "Processing service request error: Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server".
I've gone through all the discussion stuff on how Compressor needs to be reinstalled and all that. That's not my problem here. Compressor will work fine if I use it standing alone. It's only if I try to use the FCP export that this problem occurs.

Compressor works fine as a stand alone when I import a Quicktime file. However, if I try to export a suquence directly from FCP, it gives me a message "File Error: A file of this name already exists". If I press okay it exports it to Compressor which gives me a message, "Can't preview movie Final Cup Pro App is busy".
Then when I go ahead and load the output settings into compressor ( actual compressor window shows the sequence as being loaded) it starts to render and then it stops with the following message logged
    "Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
    Time Elapsed: 0:00:00
    Time Remaining: 0:00:00
    Percent Complete: 100
Status: Failed - Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server"
Any ideas what the problem might be?

  • Does Motion Filtering setting affect Export Using Compressor?

    Hello!
Can anyone tell me if my Motion Filtering setting in the video processing tab of my sequence settings has any effect on the ultimate quality of my export when using the "Export Using Compressor" command? I know it certainly would when exporting to Quicktime, but I'm wondering if it matters if I'm going directly to Compressor. I am sending a completely unrendered sequence.
    Thanks!
    Cameron

Don't feel too bad. None of us can match what the big guys do with our software encoders and burners.
They have the advantage of very expensive encoding hardware/software. They have tons of technical expertise (the so called black art of encoding). And they are working with source material that is expertly lighted, shot and graded. Then they physically stamp their disks, rather than relying on dyes.
    It's not a fair fight.
But we can do a very decent job using FCP and/or Compressor and/or DVD Studio Pro and/or iDVD.  (I've seen – and made myself – some great looking DVDs by simply taking a ProRes 422 file into iDVD and choosing Professional Quality.)
I always start with a Pro Res master file – either 422 or HQ, depending on the original material. When possible the frame rate and size are the same as what was shot.
A Compressor>Create DVD or Compressor >DVD Studio Pro can produce superior results because you have more control over the process. Starting with the DVD stock preset, you adjust as necessary – bit rate and sometimes Frame Controls. So, for example, using Frame Controls you could reduce the chances of introducing artifacts in the down-convert from HD to SD by turning on the Resize Filter.
Open up the Preview window. Set in and out points to encode a manageable length test file with he stock settings. Burn a test DVD directly from Compressor using a DVD-RW disk. If you like it, great. Make a disk image (select HD as output device in Job Actions) and burn. Or if you want better menus, use Toast,
We're seeing less and less interlaced footage these days, but if working with a video intended for the Web or computer display, the video should be de-interlaced – again, in Frame Controls.
Finally, buy good media like Verbatim.
    Good luck.

  • How export to Compressor?

Q#1: I just upgraded to FCP 7.02 (but use FCP infrequently). I edited a program and went to export to Compressor, but Compressor no longer shows in Export (didn't it used to?). Do I use Export -- Quick Time Conversions -- Options -- Settings?
Q#2: The footage I edited was shot in HD: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. Can you direct me to a link for a process to get the highest quality DVD from this (short of Blue Ray?)
    Thanks! Duncan

#1 - FILE>SEND TO COMPRESSOR. Now it works in the background and you can continue to edit.
    #2 - #42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Is Rendering automatic before Export to Compressor?

Hi, I have some automatic compression set for 45 minutes, but I sent a sequence to Compressor and used 2 settings [ProRes 422 and NTSC DV] for the sequence. The sequence had a green line above it, so I assumed it was already rendered for the Color Correction. However on looking at the sequence later it was "finished" and blue....
I'm wondering if I sent a rendered or unrendered file to Compressor. I thought I would be blocked from sending the file if it were not completely rendered...
    Thanks

Just to clarify, if you're using the *File > Export > Using Compressor* method, you can export unrendered material and, as mentioned, Compressor will render filters & effects from FCP directly into the new file. However, the only circumstance where I've seen this as being beneficial is when exporting directly an MPEG-2 encode. Having Compressor render material directly into the MPEG-2 stream usually results in a pronounced difference (especially for extensive color correction) if you're using a lower quality editing codec (DV, in particular).
Other type of (interframe) compressed encodes (MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-1) don't benefit quite as much. In fact, I don't think it makes a bit of difference for h.264 material (like encoding for iPods). Same for transcodes (8-bit Uncompressed to DV, DVCPro to ProRes422, etc). In those cases, it's best - from a quality vs time needed standpoint - to render in FCP, then have Compressor perform the transcode from an exported reference movie.
Michael and Jerry have all the other bases covered...

  • Any solutions for "Export process terminated unexpectedly [11]" problem?

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to simply use Quicktime Pro (Version 7.6.6 Build 1632) to enable the "Fast Internet Start" feature of a 640 x 480 video H.264 video. It uses 16-bit Little Endian for audio, if that's of any help.
Anyway, like lots of other users with this same exact problem, I make the changes in the "Export" dialogue (in this case, enabling "Fast Internet Start" and lowering the audio quality a bit), and the little status indicator goes away and "Export Process Terminated Unexpectedly {11}" appears in its place. Has a definitive answer been found for this problem?

Similar issue here when exporting AVI files captured from Canon G9 to iPod.
QuickTime Pro quits with: Failed: process terminated unexpectedly (11).
Oddly, if I start from a power off and run QTime the error does not occur.
Of course powering off for every export is a real PAIN IN THE Axx but it is a work around on this end.
I have yet to try 3rd party software but this is error occurs with Quick Time Pro Ver 7.5 build 149.5.

  • Exporting using Compressor failed, and other awekward issues with FCP

Hi FCP gurus! I need your help!
Everytime I try to export using compressor, my submission fails.
I even try a sequence a exported as m2v on Monday, but today is not working.
Compressor will some times say "Unable to view preview, FCP is busy". When I press submit, it goes to Batch Processor but it either will immediately show FAILED or it will just not do any processing. When I quit and restart, then the submission appears as failed.
Also when exporting, FCP comes back with a pop message saying that 4 files went offline. When I try to reconnect them it says: "There are not clips selected that have files associated with them". So, why is FCP constantly not able to fine this files, if they are not been used?
I need to export a file for my soundtrack guy, and he needs MOV, preferable DV-PAL or Motion-JPEG or similar frame-based codecs. What are my options?
In any case, what the problem here is that I CANNOT export anything. What shall I do? I already restarted the computer twice, nothing.
I realized that I have files using in this project, saved in two different external harddrives, do you think this has anything to do with the issue?
    I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks so much in advance!

First off, fwiw, I never "send to compressor."  I export a self-contained QT movie, not a conversion.  Then I run that through compressor with the appropriate settings.  I like the self contained file, it becomes a master from which I can make all sorts of variations.  The only difference, in theory between self contained and reference, is that if for any reason you lose the render files the reference movie will not work.
    Q1 No.
    Q2 see above
Q3  There is no such thing as uncompressed.  It's just a different codec rather than a perfect copy of your timeline.
Q4 lots of reasons for making a conversion, but none of them are valid for making DVD's
Q5  Nothing wrong with letting DVDSP make the encoding-- just be sure to get into the preferences for DVDSP and set the destinations to a folder for the project, so you don't overwrite any other projects.  Depending on how long the project is, you can let it encode in the bg while you set up your project, build the buttons etc.  It's all the same encoding engine, whether is is done in compressor or dvdsp.   I find it much faster to use compressor then to take to dvdsp becaue you can use quickcluster.
Now a couple of questions for you:  what sort of footage are you using and what are your fcp sequence settings?
