Exporting to DV tape with a DVX 100a

I am trying to export a project from FCP to DV tape using my DVX 100A camera as a deck (I know that it would be better to use a regular deck but that's not in the budget right now so please no need to offer advice about using a regular deck).
I have read that the fire wire of fcp 4 is not supported by the DVX 100A. However, I can get the computer to communicate in capturing mode with the dvx through firewire, but cannot get it to communicate the other way - - going from the computer to the camera to export to tape.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Jim

thanks for the response.
I am wondering though, what are you referring to when you say QT ISSUES. what is QT6?
When you download from you computer on to your DVX, what setting did you use on your DVX? I put mine on video, but get nothing other than a blank blue screen. As noted before, I know that the camera and computer are communicating because I was able to control the camera through the firewired in that mode.
I might just be missing a very simple step. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

  • How to export to DVCAM tape with timecode from Premiere CS 6?

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I need to give a dvcam tape with proper timecode to a television station for a Show I edit. I am editing for this station for last 7 years. Before they accepeted betacam, but now they changed to DVCAM. I have Premiere Pro 6 (or CC) and SONY HVR M15U deck. I connected it via firewire, then realized firewire can't export timecode. Now I am in a pickle.
    Possible solutions (may be):
    - Buy a card, send other signal like SDI to the deck?
    - Buy new deck?
Please help. I able to print to tape via firewire, but how can I print the timecode?
    Thanks

    Sure it can.

  • Will it work with iMovie 8.0.6. PANASONIC DVX 100A?

    Hello
I am bidding on a Panasonic camera PANASONIC DVX 100A. I "heard" that it works with iMovie, BUT, I would like to double check with you on the support board.
I thank you all in advance.
    Xeno

Best to ask this question on the iMovie forum if you want to be sure someone who uses iMovie and that camera sees the question.
Still, if your computer has a firewire 400 port, the camera can be controlled by the computer.
Depending on the how much you want to use the camera and how many hours there already are on the heads, you may want to use less expensive DV cam (or find something like a Sony DSR-11) as the playback device to keep the wear and tear on the dvx down.
    good luck,

I can capture just fine from my XL2 but I can't export out to tape.  It doesn't set the camera up as a playback monitor.  How can I remedy this situation?  Is there a setting I am missing?

Make sure External Device under Export is enabled in the Playback Settings of the Program monitor.

  • 23.98 Panasonic DVX-100a

So I shot an entire season of football on a Panasonic DVX-100a in 24Pa. During halftime I would turn the camera off to conserve battery. Upon capturing those clips I would get a time code break every time where the camera was turned off, giving me two separate clips. On the last couple games of the season the second half or the NAME-1 clip's audio would be off and continue drift off in weird intervals. Upon syncing that nightmare up did I realize that there was another issue related to exporting and playback. When I would export the edited tracks to a QT Movie file, (keeping the settings at default) the footage in the QT movie was different than that of what played back from the timeline. Rather than just showing the edited plays from the timeline it would show footage from the same game, just show parts that were edited out from the raw source. All of the obviously things like IN & OUT points, markers were checked (none set btw) to insure nothing was creating a mixup. My solution around this was to take the playback from the timeline dump it to tape and re-digitize to insure proper edited footage. Not sure where the mix up went. Any ideas??? I've used the camera since then and was successful with a proper edit. I've since stopped using that camera to prevent any future issues.

So we take it that it's a bug which strenghens the
usual warning: never update your software in the
middle of a big project. Acually the more I look at
FCP 6, the more I wonder if it's worth upgrading...
I have another six months to go on this project, and I love smoothcam, but still....
I'm going to try 6.0.1. If I don't get any satisfaction with that, I am going to go back to 5.1.4, which was working fine. Actually, FCP 6 solved what for me was a huge problem with version 5.1, which involved management of media and clips. Previous to version 6, if I moved a sequence from one nested bin to another one nested in a different bin, FCP silently and without any warning broke ALL links to the master clips in that sequence. FCP 6 has fixed this problem. But created others.....
I will report back to this thread after I try 6.0.1.

  • DVX-100A audio 2 seconds out-of-sync

    Hi gang.
I'm having a very frustrating sync issue with footage captured from my DVX-100A. I realize that this was a known issue with the DVX-100, but it was corrected with the 100A. I've been using this camera for about 4 years and have never experienced this problem until now.
    Any suggestions? I'm stumped.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the suggestions, Kevan...
BUT it wasn't any of those things.
After much experimentation (changing capture cameras, rebooting, turning off sharing, etc.) and hair-pulling, I determined that it was the DISK DRIVE that made the difference. I had been capturing to a Western Digital WD4000 drive connected to the internal SATA bus. When I switched to a Maxtor drive connected via an external SATA card (FirmTek), everything worked perfectly. I captured 8 hours of tape from 3 different sources without a hitch.
I haven't yet determined if it's the drive or the internal SATA bus that's the problem, but capturing to the external Maxtor allows me to "capture now" an ENTIRE HOUR of tape without intervention. In my 3-camera shoot, I can now put the three captured files above each other on the timeline, line them up exactly once, and they stay in sync for the whole hour.
The moral of this story: Final Cut is apparently clueless about how well it's capturing to a drive (and yes, I always had "abort on dropped frames" turned on). Try switching to a different drive vendor if you're having sync problems. Or maybe a different bus.

  • Firewire failure when printing to tape with DSR-11

I have a problem printing to tape with bigger projects. I can't put out to tape more then around 20mins, then the either sound or sound and picture drop.
I have everything rendered and exported to a new, not-selfstanding final cut pro file (Quicktime export) and reimported and put in a new sequence. As I found out, this causes the least problems with complex sequences, sounds etc.
The problem might be related to a occasional image drop out while working on the timeline and watching on the external monitor (through firwire). After a while the connection fails and I have to switch from "all frames" to "none" and back in order to continue watching through the deck.
I checked all settings I know, could it be a hardware problem or a problem with the protocoll of the sony DSR-11 deck (I use DVCAM).
    Thanks for your time !
    klaus

    Hello Klaus,
I also own and operate a Sony DSR-11 which has worked out just fine for me. However, I recently bought a new firewire cable to replace my 4-year old cable and discovered that you get what you pay for when it comes to cables. After a while the new cable would slip out of the back of the DSR-11 and I would lose my connection during editing and playback. As part of the troubleshooting process I replaced the firewire cable with a "better" one and no longer experience this problem. My only critisism of the DSR-11 is the smaller firewire connection instead of the larger one found on external firewire devices. Good luck.

    Hi Ludek,
I trid the SP, but doesn't work. I can send the font to you, it is only 50K. If you would like to try I can send it to you, but i am not sure how i can upload the font file. I guess any none Windows standard font will have same issue, i guess.
For now, i am going to give up and use image file instead.

  • How do I export jpgs as tifs with the original resolution ?

    Hi,
I am very new to Lightroom 5 (I only installed it today (on Windows 8.1) :-)) but I have read Victoria Bampton's Quick Start Guide and have read a number of forum posts over the last few weeks to get an idea about how the program generally works.
I am embarking on a project to scan and archive my family's photos and videos, and I will be using Lightroom to manage the collection.  To start the project, I have just imported over 10,000 digital photos taken by a variety of cameras (36 of them, according to Lightroom !)  over the last 12 years or so into a new Lightroom catalogue.   These are all currently JPEG files, but I want to keep TIFF files in the collection because my research has led me to the conclusion that TIFF is a better long-term archival format.
I started by doing an Export of a small number of photos to save the .jpg files as .tif files, but when reviewing the results, I noticed that the image's resolution was changed during the export.  For example, one original jpg is only 96ppi but the exported tif is 240ppi.  Another jpg is 180ppi and the tif is 240ppi.  At least, that's what the metadata seems to be telling me (via the Details tab of the Properties dialog in Windows), so I assume it's true...
I understand that the 240ppi that I am seeing in the .tif file metadata was specified in the Image Sizing section of the Export dialog, so that's not the issue.
I would prefer it if the .tif file has the exact same resolution (ppi) as the original .jpg, but I am unable to work out how to do it.   It would be great if the resolution setting in the Export dialog was controlled by the Resize to Fit checkbox, like the other settings in the section, but it doesn't appear to be (it's enabled even if the Resize to Fit checkbox is unticked).
I then thought about using the Library Filters to filter by the Horizontal Resolution metadata, so that I could select all the photos with the same resolution and export just those with the Resolution setting in the Export dialog set to the right number, and then repeat that process for each different group of original photos with a different resolution.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to work out how to filter by the horizontal resolution metadata field - it doesn't seem to be available in the dropdown list of fields shown when I click on the up-down arrow next to the "Date" or "Camera" (etc.) columns in the Library Filter pane.
Finally, here's my question (or three):
Is there a way to export .jpgs to .tif files while keeping the original resolution ?
Alternatively, is there a way to select groups of photos by their horizontal or vertical resolution (so just those photos could be exported in a group with the right resolution specified) ?
Or is there any other way to do what I want (convert jpg to tif with the same resolution and keeping all the metadata) ?
Thanks for reading all the way through to the end.
    John.

These are all currently JPEG files, but I want to keep TIFF files in the collection because my research has led me to the conclusion that TIFF is a better long-term archival format.
I'm not sure why you say this. In terms of long-term archival format, I think the two are equal, I am not aware of other reasons to do this, and thus in my opinion, the task of globally turning all your JPGs into TIFFs seems unnecessary. You don't gain anything by doing this. But you sure will spend a lot of time and take up a lot of disk space doing this.
I would prefer it if the .tif file has the exact same resolution (ppi) as the original .jpg, but I am unable to work out how to do it.
Again, I think you have embarked upon an unnecessary task. The ppi in the file is essentially meaningless. A photo that has (for example) 3000x2000 pixels saved at 240 ppi is the exact same photo as the same photo 3000x2000 saved at 180ppi, not a single pixel has changed. You are placing a meaning and importance to this ppi number that just doesn't exist.
To answer your questions at the bottom, I would advise you to not do the things you are talking about, it seems to me that you have greatly misunderstood things.

I still use Aperture 2.1.4.  I need to export an image file with a CMYK profile.  Whereas a generic CMYK profile is listed in ColorSync Utility, it does not appear on the list of profiles in the edit portion of the export preset dialogue.  Help?  Is there some way to add the CMYK profile to the list of choices that are available in the export preset dialogue such that I can choose it?

    leonieDF
Thanks for your response.  My profiles are located within color sync utility as you can see here:
These profiles do not respond to clicking and dragging.  Since they are all in one place, more or less, I'm reluctant to make further attempts to relocate them.  Accessing the CMYK profile is the first difficult experience I've encountered with this arrangement.  I have never needed the CMYK profile until recently, and that need has now past.  However, it remains a mystery to me as to why it does not appear with all the others on the menu of export choices in Aperture 2, or on the menu of profile assignment choices in the Preview application (where again all the other profiles are listed as choices).  I'm beginning to think my current set up will permit me to view an image that was created in CMYK space, but does not easily assign, or convert to that space.  I don't face these restrictions with all the others, so it remains a curious circumstance for me.  I anticipate upgrading my computer and software in the near future which might alleviate this issue altogether.  Again, many thanks for your attention to this matter.  The reach of this community is astounding.

  • Exporting to a PDF with facing pages

Please help, I have encounter a problem with InDesign CS4, which I didn't have with CS3 version.
When I export an InDesign document with facing pages into a PDF, it turns it into a PDF document with consecutive pages (spreads are broken into individual pages). I want to keep the facing pages format in PDF as well.
My document is an online newsletter, which can be printed on an office printer. Pages are letter size for convenience
Now, I tried to check "Spreads" in the export to PDF dialogue box and what happened is that Acrobat resized spreads containing 2 facing letter-size pages onto a single letter size page. The cover appears and prints fine, but all the spreads are downsized.
    What am I doing wrong????

Thank you very much, I went into Acorbat's file-properties and set it up there and it worked!
but for some reason I never had to change settings in Acrobat with InDesign CS3 documents
