Exporting to DXF

Hi everyone.  I'm new here and have a question
concernig the Illustrator 9 program that we have here at school.
I'm a high school sculpture teacher and I'm trying to help one of my students get his art work scanned into Illustrator, get the basic shape traced and exported as a DXF for a laser cutting machine.  Can someone give me some advice?  We already have the shape traced but when I export it as a DXF and send it to the laser cutting guy he emails back saying that he can't read it.  Maybe I missed a step somewhere along the line.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

it could have to do with your export options.  you will have to ask him which autocad interchange dxf file format he wants and the details to select in the export dialog window.

  • Export to dxf or dwg fails

    Hi,
I am trying to export to DXF or DWG and Illustrator fails, regardless of the settings entered into the dialog boxes for either file format.
The error message is also very unhelpful -
"The operation cannot complete due to an unknown error [PARAM]"
Has anyone a solution for this?
    Thank you for any help.
    Best,

This issue has been sorted with Adobe chat support.
For anyone else - deleting the settings file in the roaming profile on windows 8.1 did it.
    Cheers

  • How not to loose precision when exporting to dxf?

When a simple line drawing of exactly 1780.00mm wide is exported into a new dxf file and that file is imported back into illustrator CS4 the precision of the imported drawing is not the same. Often about 0.2 mm smaller.Tried other units, did't  work. Snap to grid/point was switched off. I need the exact size again..
I hope somebody can help?! Many thanks.

    Niffo,
Of course I understand the importance of accuracy, especially if the design will be transfered to physical fabrication. But what I'm suggeting is that you aren't losing "image size," but rather losing "line weight" or at least its reference. As a result, you may be seeing a different dimension. Consider this oversimplifcation:
Dimension A = the distance between the lines.
Dimension B = the distance between the line weights at their outer extents.
Could it be that the dimensions of your drawing are being measured at different points pre-dxf export and post-dxf import?
I don't know, but this is the possibility I was presenting in my previous post.

  • Illustrator 9 - Export in DXF

    Patrik,
You have a few ways of limiting images/artwork. I believe one of the following ones should work.
    A) Create a closed path round the parts to be cut and Object>Clipping Mask>Make;
    B) If you have vector artwork to cut, depending on its nature it may be possible to select the closed path as in A), then Object>Path>Divide Object Below and delete outlying parts;
    C) If the cutting is rectangular, either set the Artboard to Fit to Artwork or create an Artboard covering what you want (Artboard Tool);
    D) The dirty destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine; this step may be unneeded in your version, you may try;
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector;
    3) Shudder.

  • Phantom duplicate line art assigned no color directly under my black outline. Shows up as additional black lines in the exported dxf complicating laser cutting production

    http://sportsraxco.com
I'm creating sports related 3D products using illustrator to create the original art. You can see them at the website above
The art is outlined exported as dxf and sent to a metal fabricator to laser cut the art.
Multiple phantom outlines of the drawing appear in the dxf complicating the cad work and adding cost to production.
We've found that the phantoms actually are in the illustrator file. Exact images of what i'm drawing but assigned no color.
Why is that happening. How do I stop it from happening?
    Thanks four your help

  • Export as .dwg

I am having trouble with opening a .dwg file, using AutoCAD 2013, that was created in Illustrator CS5 as an .ai and exported as a .dwg.  Has anyone done this successfully and how?

when exporting as dxf or dwg, i have tried using each version of AutoCAD and the Maximum Editability option and the file ends up as a solid shape.
we (our client is an architect) eventually went with a WMF format, but now that file is showing up way too large. a 75 inch wide panel is coming in to AutoCAD at over 78 feet wide. we've got numerous files and it looks like they are having to scale each one down independently, which is a bit more time consuming than we'd like.
are there any reliable third party plug-ins or apps that make Illustrator play nicer with AutoCAD?

  • Convert my dynamic Drawing (created in a Flash Dialog using AS 3) into the .DXF and .DWG form

    Hi ,
I want to convert my dynamic Drawing (that I created in a Flash Dialog using AS 3) into the .DXF and .DWG format. Is there any way by which I can give the export functionality on the flash page so that the dynamic drawing that created in flash code will export into .DXF and .DWG format.
    Please Help
    Thanks,
    Simon

There's no automatic way to convert to AutoCAD formats... you will need to write your own. You will need to figure out the formats of .dxf and .dwg and then probably use ByteArray to output. It will not be a trivial task.
    Hi,
Can you please give me some example for this?
I have used AlivePDF to convert my Diagram to PDF but it create a Raster image in PDF and all vector data is lost.
I want to convert this PDF to .dxf and .dwg format using any tool. but not found any way around.
    Thanks!!

  • "plugin cannot be initialized" dxf import

    Hello,
When I attempt to open a dxf file in Illustrator CS5.1 mac I get the error 'The plugin cannot be initialized for lack of the initialization file "ADINIT.DAT"'.  The dxf files are a variety of versions from several different sources.  Exporting to dxf seems to work fine.  It's quite the pain to run them through another program and convert them first, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    R

I do not know if there is a way to fix this issue if you are having it except to mention that if it is always by the same proportion you can report it as a bug and you can also perhaps use and action with a keyboard shortcut to rescale it. That would get your accuracy back and though a work around not a terrible one to have use a simple keyboard shortcut and voilá!

  • Why is Vanishing Point filter in the latest Photoshop CC creating PNGs that do not match the planes?

    Hi Everyone,
I've scoured the forums, as well as external sites, but not finding a solution.
Tried tech support, their ideas didn't pan out. Would greatly appreciate some guidance.
Every time I try to use VPE, the resulting mesh is fine (the dxf), but the PNGs
do not match the drawn planes at all.
For example, I'll use a file from wikimedia. (all images re-compressed for the forum)
I draw the right wall, make sure it is blue, then pull the floor.
Pull the floor and the left wall.
Pull the back ground (hard to see in the compressed image, but it is there).
    Pull the ceiling.
The completed planes.  Right wall was drawn, remaining were each
pulled out the of the previous plane.  All blue.  Entire image is covered.
Importing the VPE into After Effects CC.  Note the wonky textures.
Here are the actual textures (original PNGs compressed into JPEG for posting).
This is the background piece, note how the section of the image doesn't align at
all with the plane I drew.
Hope this issue is clear to all.  The mesh looks fine to me, just the PNGs are off.
I've successfully used the Vanishing Point filter extensively in previous versions of Photoshop.
I'm currently using Photoshop CC on OSX 10.8.4 running on a 15" PowerBook Retina.
I've tried the following to no avail:
    differing JPEGs
    drawing the floor first
drawing the first surface counter-clockwise and clockwise : )
    ensured all planes are blue
    disabled graphics acceleration under prefererences
completed uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled with clean performance/preference settings (did not import any previous settings).removed the "Adobe Photoshop CC Settings" folder as well.
Tried exporting a DXF, again mesh looks great, textures are wrong.
Ideas are appreciated because right now, I'm stuck : )

    GOT IT!!!!
After we eliminated Adobe settings, and the software, I started wondering what's outside that could be affecting VPE.
It's the resolution of the screen!  I have a MBP Retina.
Using SetResX, I cranked the resolution of my screen from the default retina 1440 x 900 to the hardware's native res of 2880 x 1800.
    THIS FIXED IT.
The resulting PNGs from the export perfectly match the planes (DXF Mesh).
So, I'm asserting that there may be a bug in the current release of PS CC where it is not compatible with the default retina resolution on the MacBook Pro.

  • Information about acrobat 9.0

    Dear Sirs
We have been informed by the TTF company that TTF software has been acquired by Adobe System. As end users of the software Project Reviewer, we would like to understand more details concernig how the whole "package" has been incorporated in the Acrobat 3D Pro Extended version. We are mostly interested in the 3D model handling.
    1) Are all the properties, commands and general skill of the TTF PR incorporated in 3D Pro Ext?
    2) Which 3D format can be imported? And in which format can be exported?
    3) How can the 3D model be analyzed in terms of mass properties, dimensions etc?
    4) How (and if) the parametric drawings can be visualized, printed and exported in dxf/dwg format?
    5) Where can be found a specific 3D tutorial?
In general we would like to have a clear picture on how all the properties and commands have been transferred in the Acrobat 3D if possible.
Is very hard for me to get any infos about it.
Many thanks for your kind support.
    Lorenzo

  • How to convert jpeg image  into vector

I have jpeg  image which contains line and circle. i want  to convert this image as a vector  and  i need to export  into DXF file format.
In my illustrator i am not able to find live Trace option. how to enable live trace option.
can anyone  help me to convert this, because  i am new to Adobe Illustrator.
    Thanks  in Advance.

If you do want to use the image trace option here is how you do it:
If you have nothing selected your contextual menu should look something like this:
If you have your image selected your contextual menu will look like this.
You can use the image trace from that button. to find it through the menu go here:

  • Formatting files for  PC's using AutoCad machine control

I sent a series of line drawings (Illustrator 12.0.1, OS 10.4.1) to a water-jet cutter who asked for the drawings in dxf format. He controls his CNC machine with a PC running AutoCad program. The drawings imported into his program OK but he says AutoCad doesn't like the Illustrator segments, particularly the long bezier curves and he has to go over every drawing adjusting the control points and adding others to get the CNC machine to perform properly. (Dumbing down???)
I'm thinking the solution is to somehow apply the Illustrator option 'split long paths'. Is there an option to do this according to values that I can enter somewhere? Or is it only possible to do this manually with the scissors tool? Or does anybody have any experience with preparing files for use by PC's with AutoCad for the control of a CNC machine? Advice?

    James,
George needs less segments/anchor points. The bezier curves that Illustrator creates when exporting to DXF is a nightmare for a waterjet cutter. It is interpreting the bezier data as many tiny individual line segments that make up an arc. He would be better off exporting version 8 AI ( everything higher than 8 is PDF based ) if his vendor could import it. They are definitely "cleaner" when importing into CAD vs the DXF export from AI and DXF import into AutoCAD. I am assuming the vendor cannot import AI, that is why I recommended www.kandusoftware.com
I have been down this road many times, cleaning up bad DXF files with numerous line segments. You get good at it after a lot of practice, but it is still takes a lot of time to get good output on the waterjet cutter.

  • How to open Isodraw file (.ISO) in Adobe Illustrator?

    Hi there,
I can't open the .iso file from Isodraw (PTC) in Adobe Illustrator. Do i need to have a conversion agent to convert it to .ai in order to open in Adobe Illustrator?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Jacqueline

Illustrator cannot open IsoDraw's native format.
Whenever Program A cannot open the native format of Program B, you have to find a format that Program A can export and Program B can import. So...
If you have access to Program A, check its specs (or its export options) see what formats it can export.
See what formats Program B can import (or Open).
When you find a match, export from Program A in that format, and then open it in Program B.
Expect some trade-offs, because the format used for the exchange will likely not support all the native features of the exporting program.
IsoDraw is supposed to be able to export .AI, DXF, DWG, all of which Illustrator can open.

  • Image to vector lines

how can i convert an image(Jpeg or pdf) into vector lines in illustrator and export as dxf file?

    Barbara,
If you wish to make it clean and simple, recreating with the Pen Tool and probably suitable tools in the Rectangle Tool Group (and maybe others) on top of the locked image is the first option to consider.

  • Polylines to Lines and Arcs

I'm getting some metal cut-outs done of a design I did up in Photoshop and converted in Illustrator, but the end product is not that nice because Mr Metalworker has said "the Drawing file is in Polylines (many lines to make up one) because of this the laser takes them as individual contours and cuts it at less than half speed."
He goes on to say that I need to "convert it into ‘lines and arcs’ and not ‘polylines’ then I think we can get to the point where no cleaning, filing or deburring needs to take place."
How do I do this?  I'm a bit naive when it comes to this sort of thing and googling has led me to believe I need to do it in a CAD program?

vector info is like a join the dots.
image or pixel art is a grid of different coloured square pixels.
Google will provide much info on this.
Rasterizing is a pixel function. and will not be what you want to do.
image trace is getting closer, but it is not accurate and with cause the issues described by your laser guy.
Illustrator will do strange things with the fill of objects when exporting to DXF. (DXF is probably what you laser guy wants.)
you will need to make sure everything has no fill and a black outline before exporting.
I am guessing but if his machine uses Gcode(and I believe most still do), then he want straight lines and basic arcs.
even getting say an Oval shape in to Gcode is complex.
He should have Cam software to help with this as long as he gets a clean DXF file.
here is part of your art redrawn.
it will give you an idea on what you want it to look like.
