Exporting to external hard drive

What's the best way to transfer photos from my laptop to an external hard drive for permanent storage using Lightroom?
Phyllis Bertke

I Don't know if its the best way, but i have a "My pictures" folder on my external drive thats i added to the Folders in lightroom, within that i have the folder structure containing images.
So all i have to do to move images accross is drag the folder name ( or selected images) to where i want, and lightroom moves the original RAW files, but they stay visible in the same catalog.
With 1.1 you can export a as new catlog, i've not tried that as i only want one.

  • Trouble exporting to external hard-drive

    Hello,
Hoping for some help on this issue.
In the older version I had of iPhoto, I could click and drag over the specific files I wanted to back up on my external hard drive. In the 08 version when open my pictures library I only have an icon of the iphotos library. When I click on it to choose the specific folders i want to back up, it dosent expand to show the contents it just launches the program.
Is there an easier way to just select the folders I want to back up instead of having to go thru the programs interface? I find this change in the program frustrating and time consuming.
I dragged over the whole folder, but even from the removable drive it launches the program instead of just showing me the file names and folders.
Many thanks in advance for help on this matter

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
You can use an app such as DejaVu or Chronosync to do incremental back ups of the Library. There are many other options: search on MacUpdate.
If you want to back up specific files simply select them in the iPhoto Window and use the File -> Export command. YOU can do this to back up specific files, albums or Events. It’s faster and safer than rooting through the folders of the iPhoto Library Folder.
    FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards

  • Aperture Export to External Hard Drive - Problem

I have a problem I'm hoping you can help me with. Bear with me here...I decided to backup my aperture library to an external hard drive, but I wanted to do so by exporting about 6 GIGS of RAW photos instead of using the vault.
So, I selected all the photos, clicked file/export masters and selected the external hard drive and the folder within that drive. An error occurred about 3/4 of the way thought the export, and aperture crashed. Now here's the problem: For some reason, my computer is telling me all the files that succeeded in exporting are taking up my HD memory, not the external drive's. When I look for the photos, they don't exist anywhere. They're not on the external drive nor are they on my hard drive. When I go back into Aperture and try to export a photo, it shows me the last export was to the external drive. It's baffling. It says the export was to:
    mac/volume/externaldrive
Strangely, there is no such folder as "volume" on my mac.
So, now I've lost about 5 GB of space on my HD and I have no idea how to reclaim that memory. Does anyone know what could have happened? This is critical for me because I only have about 1 GB of space on my HD left.
    Thanks for your help!

Oops...I meant to write that it's 60 GIGS.

  • Exporting to external hard drive & viewing on PC

I want to share family photos with relatives and use them as my back-up. I didn't want to give them my entire photo library, so I exported the pertinent albums to an external hard drive, planning to download directly to their computers.
Only a few of the pictures would open. It didn't seem to matter whether they were photos I scanned or photos directly from the digital camera.
They all had the file extension. They all showed up, but the good ones were thumbnails and the bad ones were icons.
From reading the discussions, it sounds like it should have worked.
    What might have happened?

Including the originals is a must; I should have mentioned it, but why the previews as well? Much more data to transfer?
Excellent question  .  It forced me to go back and make a list of what Previews are used for:
    - displayed in the Viewer until the full-res Image is rendered
    - used for Image when Original is off-line
    - shared with iLife and iWork (and, afaik, any program that uses the OS X Media Browser, inc. the Desktop and Screensaver Preferences pane)
    - share with iDevices (not sure how this one works)
    - drag-able to other programs
So there is little reason to include Previews in this case.
I'm somewhat lazy in this regard: I just set up Previews to always be there.  That way they are never missing, and the topic doesn't come up.  The cost is storage space, which I value, but much less than time, and some delay when copying Libraries.  There is one huge advantage, imho, for those who have referenced originals: the Preview serves as a last-ditch back-up.  Almost all the Libraries I use are mostly referenced.  I like the fact that if I lose a Library somehow, I still have the originals, and if I lose the originals somehow, I still have high-quality Previews.
But again, for the OP: there is no reason to include Previews when you are exporting a Library you are going to merge back into the originating Library.  Chapeau Léonie!

    Q. How to permanently delete folders and pics from laptop hard drive after exporting to external hard drive? I need laptop disk space!

Instead of exporting, move the photos to the external HD by moving them in your operating system and then reconnecting in Lightroom.

I am using Iphoto 11 ver 9.4.3 on mac using oxs 10.8.5 i want to export calendar projects to an external hard drive. my goal is to store them in an external hard drive so it doesn't use up memory on the mac hard drive. is it possible to copy the specific projects without copying the entire library? what is the easiest way to do this? i have tried export and import but it didn't seem to work.

    What do you not understand?
You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that
    Or
However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all

  • Exporting an Apeture library from one external hard drive to another

Whilst on the road I use a PowerBook G4 and I have my Aperture Library on an portable external hard drive. When I get back to base I would like to export this library from the portable to my main hard drive. Is this possible and if so can anybody please advise?

I just got back from a three week trip to Yellowstone and used my MacBook Pro and Aperture to process over 3000 images while on the road. Got home, got on my home network, exported the Yellowstone project from my laptop to a drive on my G5, shutdown Aperture on the laptop (can't run two copies of Aperture at the same time), fired up Aperture on the G5 and imported the processed project into my main library. Slick! Can't even come close to doing that in LR (yet). Saved me a ton of time in getting a lot of the editing done during down time on the road and the integration into the existing library was very straight-forward. Quick final edit, select some of the better images, smart web gallery and a very quick web output. One of the easiest trip outputs I have had in years.

  • How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

    Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
    1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
    2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
    3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
    xanacarfran2008

Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11).  Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

  • My macbook memory is nearly full, how can I export older photos to an external hard drive, and then delete to free up some memory?

I do not want to move whole iphoto library to an external hard drive as this will be a bit of a pain. I just want to moves older photos out of my iphoto library, and save them on an external hard drive to save for the future. I have heard that if you copy and move/paste from iphoto then it only copies a small version of the file, not the original full sized version. I would not want to lose any quality of the pictures I have currenty saved.
I would appreciate if anyone could advise what is the best possible way of doing this. I am very nervous about not being able to use my photos in the future due to file size, or even worse, losing them.
    many thanks,

In iPhoto, Select All the Photos you want to move... Then goto  > File > Export >
Choose the settings as seen here
Click Export and select your External Drive
Best to create a Folder to put them in... and away you go...

  • How do I export all my Iphoto photos to my external hard drive, maintaining their current state?

So I did the classic click and drag method, putting all my photos into my external hard drive, fast and easy. But what I noticed was that no information about the pictures was kept, no dates, locations etc. If you drag one picture the information comes with it, but not if you take a bunch at the same time. Then the original date is replaced by today's. I've got over 20.000 photos and I really want them on my hard drive, can someone please help me out here?

Export them using the appropriate options to include the desired metadata - see the user tip on exporting for details on eachoption
As to date - you probably are confusing the file date with the photo date - two totally different things - the photos date is internal to the photo in the EXIF data and is view using photo viewing software like preview or iPhoto - the file date it only concerned with th efile information and is views with file viewer software like nder

  • I have imported and processed photo's in Lightroom 2 and kept stored files on external hard drive.  External hard drive crashed....how do I export photo's from Lightroom when it says 'file not found'?

Folders with photo files are lost due to external hard drive crashing.  Processed photo's are still in LR.  How can I export from LR to a file (any file) that no longer exists?  Help!!!

Well, no backups, the technical term for that is "a problem". I think from this point forward, you need to commit yourself to making regular automated backups of all of your photos and catalog file to different physical disks, no excuses.
Your photos are not stored in Lightroom. However, Lightroom does create "previews", this is what you are seeing, but these are usually smaller and low-quality compared to the originals. There are plug-ins that can extract the previews from Lightroom. One such plug-in is here robcole.com - PreviewExporter

  • How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Exported it as had to wipe pc and reinstal windows but when i try to import nothing happens

How do i import my library from an external hard drive. Had to export it as had to reinstal windows due to a conflict between windows and i-tunes. Wen i try to import nothing happens despite selecting the file. Can you import from an i-phone to i-tunes?

What do you mean bye exported the library?
There is nothing to export or import.
The correct process to backup the iTunes library would be to copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the computer to the external drive.

  • Exported videos to external hard drive, now videos will play? in .mov mode

    Hi,
I bought a WD My Passport for MAC.  I exported all of my videos (I still have the videos iPhoto, they aren't deleted yet.) into the external hard drive.  All my videos are in .mov format, and will not play on my computer when I click to play.  It shows that there is 0:00 time and will not play.
Am I supposed to reformat my videos to another file extension? Getting confused and scared, because I bought this hard drive intially for my videos and if they aren't playing, not sure what I am supposed to do, did I just waste $100?
    HELP!

Okay, I tried to export -> Original Kind and it seems to have worked!
I played back the original video, and it opened up quicktime and played exactly the entire video!
You may have saved me from lots of lost videos, THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!
I am definitely going to note this for future exporting of videos!
