Exporting to HD with FCE

Please help! I have a 55 min project that I am attempting to export to HD and have had no success at all. Exported file is extremely grainy. Then I followed a youtube tutorial to change some settings. File now is better, still a little grainy, but then completely pixelates and then stops playing at about the 11 min mark. Footage filmed with Canon HF200. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you.

I assume that your video was converted to AIC for editing in FCE ?
With all FCE projects destined for iDVD the advice is the same.
For videos up to 65 minutes, open iDVD preferences and select "Best Performance". For longer ones up to 2 hours you must choose either "Best Quality" or "Pro Quality", but these take 2 and 4 times longer to encode than "Best Performance".
Then click on your FCE timeline and select File>Export>QuickTime Movie. Do NOT use QuickTime CONVERSION . . . . . . that is mainly for internet videos.
You can deselect the "Make Movie Self-contained checkbox unless you are moving the file to another computer for burning.
That's all, apart from clicking the "Save" button.

  • Few questions on exporting out with fce 3.5 for web distribution

Hello I have been trolling here for a few months reading up on things and I know my way around a search pretty well I have gotten some of these answers from reading but id like to have my own thread so I can keep it all in one place...
    First..
I run websites that need video's for surfers to be able to view.. these videos are in length from 20 min to 1 hour or longer... now I have figured out that when I render with the h.264 out sorry fce calls it export... I choose the quicktime setting of lan and it seems to be about right for what im used to in high quality from rendering out with pinnacle studio for a wmv or an mpeg.. now heres where I get confused with fce
I see there is a wmv setting to export to.. but when I do it.. it only exports a bit of it...
now these are the formats I want for video...
    .mov
    .wmv
    .mpg
I have compressor but I have no idea on the settings in there and can't find what I need
in those formats I would like to have a
    high
    med
    low
    as far as quality go's
can someone help me out so my life is easier please... in fact I have 50 bucks via paypal if I can get someone get my settings down right maybe even in compressor so I just have to edit... this part always messes with my head when it comes down to render out...
there has to be some editors on here that know excatly what im talking about without having to say it on here... if you want to chat in private you can email me chris (at) themibcorp (dot) com I will give you my ichat name from there maybe you can help me and ill help you with some paypal
I want the video to play on all forms of computers..
our's and the other kind.. LOL

This isn't something someone can decide for you. It's up to you ti make up your mind. Either will do the job. If you want to spend the time to experiment with settings to better suit your media and you know what you're doing and want to spend the money get the more expensive version. If you'll be happy to use the basic presets based on average media and file sizes then get the cheaper version.

  • Everything I export is gigantic and looks terrible with FCE

I have tried exporting a project every way I can think of. Started with a 64MB .m4v i exported from iMovie, have tried custom size, basically every quicktime export option available. Every single movie is 4-5 times the size of the original, grainy, and generally just looks terrible.
I used to use FCPro, now using FCE, and wondering if this is just a limitation of the software or has to do with the source file. Also, FCE won't let me import .m4v files or .mov files. Really frustrated with this program. If I could just figure out how to export a decent looking movie that's a reasonable size I'd be fine with it.

I did a DV export and that file now looks like crap. This is way harder than it should be.
Can't import the files I need into FCE (.mp4 or .mov)
Can't import from iMovie since source files won't import
Can't use iMovie export .m4v cause it won't work with FCE
Can't use iMovie export DV cause it looks terrible.
That's a whole lot of can'ts for what's supposed to be a powerful video editing program.

  • Getting Started with FCE - Problems with my imported files

    Hi,
I'm trying to get started with Final Cut Express, but I'm experiencing lots of problems when I import my project from iMovie.
My project contains video, which I imported into iMovie at 960 x 540. It also contains some keynote animations, which I exported from Keynote as quicktime files.
When I export my files to FCE, I instantly get problems.
    1) When I add the imported file to the sequence, I get an "Attention the clip does not match the sequence's setting or any of your sequence settings" error.
    2) Whether I choose to translate my settings or not, I try to play the video in the timeline, but there is a continuous beeping sound, no audio from my video and when it hits the keynote animations, it just says "unrendered" or "media offline".
Please can you offer any advice on how I can get started with FCE more successfully.
    Thanks!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
(please specify iMovie and FCE version)
Well, your sequence settings in FCE should be DV-PAL 48 Khz.
    Create a new sequence.
From iMovie and Keynote, export your movie with quicktime conversion andd select DV-PAL 48 kHz (*And Not* DV Stream...). This material should play without rendering because his format and codec match the sequence's codec.
Import your files and everything should be OK.
    Michel Boissonneault
The audio should be AIFF 48 kHz 16 bit linear PCM

  • Exporting to flash from FCE

    Hi people!
We've recently got FCE in work and we are trying to export to flash files but it tells us we don't have the relevant license. Does anyone know what this means? I've scoured the manual and there's nothing about exporting to Flash ( at least I've not found it!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Matt

I've only just brought FCE myself but I think that the feature is possibly only available in Final Cut Studio.
I need to save in flash format myself and with a little searching found VisualHub, it is available from the 'Downloads' page on the apple site. From reading the spiel it will convert the file that is created from FCE to any number of formats including .flv
Not sure if it works yet since while I've downloaded the program I haven't actually got a video to try it on right now.
Hope this helps and I'd certainly like to know how you get on since I need to convert to flash myself.
If I'm wrong about the feature only being available in Final Cut Studio I'm sure someone who is more experienced with FCE can point you in the right direction.

  • Dragon Dictate with FCE

I have ordered Dragon Dictate but have not used it yet. I am wondering if it is likely to be helpful with FCE? I cannot imagine it would be terribly helpful, but it would be good if it could save a few mouse actions or keyboard strokes. Has anyone used it in this way?
    Thanks, Keith

Thanks for your response. I have ordered Dragon Dictate so have not tried it yet. But I see from the demo that you can give commands like File>new. So I wondered if in FCE one could speak, File>export> Quicktime etc? Anything to save the old wrist.
Actually I am experimenting using my left hand on the mouse. sure does slow down and frustrate the use of FCE!

  • FX programs compatible with FCE HD 3.0?

I bought my copy of FCE HD 3.0 last year on the basis of an Apple customer service rep telling (and I quote) " there will always be an upgrade path to FC PRO". Techinically, that's still true but you have to buy the whole Pro studio package now just to get "MOTION".
As I delve deeper in the Live Type effects that came bundled with FCE HD, I realized that having a full fledged FX program would (or should) let me do things I want to do much quicker than mucking about in either Live Type or FCE.
Since Jobs & company have now gone over to the dark side and adopted the GATES mantra of "more money and don't forget to screw the little people", some of us can't afford the ultra bucks to buy a whole a suite just to get an FX program. My sense of betrayal by them is palpable.
So can anyone please tell me a decent FX program to get that will run on my G4 1.2 GHZ, OSX 10.3.9 machine that will be compatible with import to FCE HD 3.0? OR how to get a new and registerable copy of motion?
I'm pretty sure I will never buy another thing from Apple since they have zero allegiance to their existing customers.
    Ken
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.2GHZ

    Here's a recent example.
I was making an opening screen in LIVE TYPE with a motion background and then had another 6 layers of motion objects that apperared and disappeared at different times. Some of the objects I chose played at full opacity and didn't give a smooth appearance of fading in and then fading out as another object was coming on.
The sceen was supposed to be similar to the big bang, but with other things happening before it and then dying out.
I discovered that there was no way to vary opacity in LIVE TYPE over the length of each layer (sort of fade in and fade out).
I realize I could export each object layer separately from live type to FCE HD and then change opacity in the time line, but the little light bulb went on and I said , hmmm maybe it's time to buy "MOTION" or some thing like it.

  • Hey Apple, How do you export from imovie to fce without losing quality?

I am capturing my footage on a Panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080 avchd. The format recorded is not compatible with fce so i have to import to imovie first. what export settings do i need to use to ensure i dont lose quality when going from imovie to fce?

If you shot Progressive it won't work directly, whereas Interlaed will with the suggested File>Log and Transfer method over USB.
You will also need to select the matching Easy Setup before starting a New Project and transfering clips.
    That's usually an AVCHD 1920 x 1080i 50 or 60.
50 for PAL, 60 for NTSC.

  • Creating slideshows with FCE

    Hello everybody
In this thread I'm not really seeking resolve to a problem but, more to the tune of,
" What is lacking or missing ? " , Please let me explain, For over a year now I have been creating slideshows from stills. I cant really recall the very first app I used but, I graduated to Photo to Movie before to long. PTM did a good job but, yet something was missing to satisfy my taste so. I ran out and bought FCE and, have now been creating exclusively with FCE.
Now I'm creating all my shows using PSD files coupled with motion graphics, overlays, lower thirds so forth and so on... I have create some rather impressive shows that have amazed those who have seen them to this point. Yet, I feel I have not fully satisfied my creativity.
I have googled slideshows till I'm blue in the face, seeking examples and or direction that may satisfy
my creativity. Every site I have seen that creates these shows, create them in my opinion, a very generic way....
I have yet to use any form of plug-ins, I have only been using the filters and effects in FCE, maybe that is what I'm lacking but, plug-ins really pertain to actual video , not stills ...
The direction I'm taking this thread and, the questions I have are.
What have some of you done for dressing up slideshows ?
What other apps may you have used in creating ?
What plug-ins if any have you used ?
If you know of a site that has awesome examples could you please post a link ?
Thank you all in advance for any and all help you may offer ....

_Currently I’m working on a project where 9 stills are dropped onto the screen like cards thrown across the table, each still has an independent pan._
Thats an awesome idea really, I just created a title similar to yours . I used it to introduce the family
    I'm creating the slideshow for.
_Photo To Movie type apps will do anything like that._
PTM is a good app, it's really geared up for simplicity. When I first started with PTM , I bought it with the intension of importing into FCE. However, after learning how to work with stills in FCE, there really wasn't a need for PTM. If PTM was capable of adding motion graphics as backgrounds, I would have a lot more use for it. The lack of this capability forces you to export in an animation .mov , rather than .DV NTSC , this is a big drawback. Even if I wanted to use PTM just to set my stills and, add my motion, the rendering and, re-rendering in FCE just is not worth the haste.
_I have found my best slide shows are a combination of music that really fits the theme and a good Ken Burns effect. Music moves the soul._
This is very true, I have taken it a step above this and, have started adding sound effects to my transitions, not to all of them, but to a selected few. I personally feel that adding sound effect to al of them, would be to much. The hard part for me on this is , finding just the right sound effect. I need to start toying more with Garage Band and, see if I can just create the needed sounds.
_I think the main problem is one of all artists. While I am creating it, it is my best work ever. When it is viewed by other people, they are always floored. But if I watch it a day later, it looks like a piece of poo, there was always something I could have done better or a certain something was missing._
This is all very true, I face that problem with everything I have created. Seems everyone I create I learn yet another trick of the trade and saying , " This is going to be awesome, my best yet ". Completion day comes I burn to DVD, then I nit pick it to death.
I'm very artistic and creative by nature, I know I have always been my own worst critic. If one was to ask me today how I feel, about my progress in my work. I would have to say I feel I'm about 10% of where I would like to be.

  • Need Help-Exporting iMovie project to FCE

I'm new to iMovie. I have worked with FCE in the past, but it has changed drastically from the last time I used it. The problem I have is that all of my video is uploaded into iMovie and I was playing around with FCE and iMovie and I like the way iMovie crops the videos. I was wondering if by cropping in iMovie will it export like that to FCE? If not, what is the best way to crop video to get the same dimensions in FCE?

    Hello www,
Initially when I went to the "share" option in imovie to export to iDVD the function simply opened up the iDVD program and kept playing the opening iDVD theme over and over again.
iDVD will keep playing that theme until you either click the motion button, or decide to burn to disc.
Does your iMovie project show up as a button/title in iDVD? If so, you have exported correctly. Now you may change the menu, titles, etc., then you can
burn to disc (best way to do this is create a disk image, then burn with Disk Utility)
    hope this helps

  • How to export animated gif with transparent background and glow effect?

I've been having issues lately with creating animated gifs in flash. I finally figured out a way to export a gif with a transparent background but I'm now having an issue with it again because I'm using a glow effect. When the gif is exported the glow effect changes into a very poor quality and becomes less of a glow and more like a solid color. I've even exported a png sequence from flash and put it into photoshop then created a gif from there but I'm still having the same issue. Is there anyway I can properly export this in gif form so the quality is the same as when I test it in flash?
I've provided an image of what my issue looks like and the settings (I've messed around with the settings and this is the best I can come up with) . This is in photoshop but the result is similar in flash. The left one is what it originally looks like and the right is what it will look like after exporting. As you can see as I said before the glow changes into more of a solid color kind of like a border. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

A GIF is limited to 256 colors while a glow effect likely wants to tie up thousands (let's just say 'lots') of variations of tone.

  • Export to excel with formatting was autowrapping text in a cell

Export to excel with formatting was autowrapping text in a cell without having to check the can grow option.  When the can grow option is checked it does wrap the text however it spans multiple rows, which causes complications when trying to sort.
    It worked in:
    ProductVersion=10.0.0.533
    ProductName=Crystal Enterprise 10 Embedded
    Doesnt work in:
Crystal Reports 10.0 Service Pack 6
After the upgrade the reports did not autowrap, b/c the "can grow" option was not checked.  I believe this was fixed by "ADAPT00305137 Patch ID: 36479914
    Description:
When users export to Excel 97-2000 with the page-based format, text fields are wrapped, even when the "can grow" feature in the
Designer is turned off." .   After we turn the option to grow on it does wrap however it spans across multiple rows.  So I guess my question is there a way for it not to span multiple rows when wrapping text?

I could be wrong, but I believe the export to excel option exports the database values, and the export to HTML exports the values seen in the sheets. If the database values are stored as seconds, the Excel will see them as seconds, and the data will have to be formatted properly in Excel.
I haven't toyed around with Excel exports that much, but it might be possible to set up a template or macro in excel that would have the proper formatting, and use it when opening the Disco export.

  • Can I use  a MY Book Pro external 500 gig Triple interface HD with FCE?

    Hey everyone,
I just recently bought a Macbook pro and purchased FCE HD 3.5. I want to purchase a high capacity external HD. I want it mainly for my projects with FCE and other members of the family will be backing up to it. I want to keep my projects on the external and work on them from there not my main HD.
After doing some online research I was about to purchase the LaCie Big Disk Extreme. However there seemed to be a lot of bad reviews about early disk failures. The G Technology drives sound great but are a little pricey.
I came across the MY Book Pro addition 500 gig Triple interface HD from Western Digital and found that the 500 gig pro had similar spec to the LaCie but they never mention in the specs that it can be used for video editing. They only mention "Fast enough for video editing" in the 1TB raid 0 version. I'm just wondering if anyone is having success using the My Book Pro Edition. I checked the forums first and even check specs from apple on external drives and FCE but I was hope for some real use advise. I'm not trying to cheap out, I'm just trying not to buy a lemon & get the most storage and speed for my buck. I'll buy they higher end if I should. My video productions right now are 10 minute long movies with some video clips and stills but I'm hoping to advance to bigger (High Def) things. Any advise in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
The specs from Western Digital are as follows:
    My Book™ Pro Edition™
    External Hard Drives
    500 GB, Triple Interface
    Rotational Speed
    7,200 RPM (nominal)
    Average Latency
    4.20 ms (nominal)
    Seek Times
    Read Seek Time
    8.9 ms
    Track-To-Track Seek Time
    2.0 ms (average)
    Serial Transfer Rate
    FireWire 800
    Serial Bus Transfer Rate (1394b)
    800 Mbits/s (Max)
    Macbook Pro 17" 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The 500GB MyBook Pro should work fine. Just be sure to use a Firewire connection (not USB) to your Mac and format the drive as Mac OS Extended - Journaled. It will come from the factory as FAT32, so you'll need to reformat it. But wait - don't reformat it until you offload the ButtonManager, FW Driver and Retrospect software. You will need the first two to install your drive.
And that's one of the reasons I stay away from the MyBook drives - they were really designed for Windows systems, not Macs. For one, they have their own FireWire drivers and I see no reason to be required to install device-specific drivers on my Mac in order to use a consumer-grade hard drive. As far as I'm concerned, that's just bad design (or, perhaps design for systems other than Macs ...).
The 500GB Lacie Big Disk did get a bunch of bad reviews. However, the 500GB Lacie d2 Extreme is the same price and has much better reviews. The Lacie d2 Extreme drives are quite reliable; I have many and not one of them has failed me over the years. The 320GB d2 Extreme is currently $140 at newegg.com. See how that compares to the price of the MyBook.
