  • Layer problem with exporting nested Indesign Doc in indesign doc to PDF

    Hi folks,
    I managed to create a PDF with very strange layer behavior... even with content that shows when ALL layers are turned off...
    Here's how I did it:
    - I placed our two page company letterhead indesign document in another Indesign document.
    - Both documents have several layers (our company use up to 8 different languages for their corporate papers)
    - The document that I exported to PDF, has itself two layers, and the nested Indesign document is exclusively on masterpages in the second layer.
    - The nested Document has 4 layers visible, but consists of around 27 layers.
    - Turning on the layer that contains the letterhead doc, correctly shows the corporate identity on all pages that are based on the master layers. Turning the layer off hides it. So far, so good.
    - I use a PDF preset which renders a PDF with following settings:
    - When opening the resulting PDF, the layers of the main document are all there, as one would expect. However, toggling the layers visibility renders a weird result... The document is 4 pages, a usage contract. You can download it from our server via this link. Now if you would toggle the layer visibility of the "letterhead_def actual" layer that is supposed to hold only the corporate identity, you will find that all works correctly for the first two pages... but on the 3rd, all contents seems to have been combined onto the second layer... and on the 4th page, the contents landed on a layer that isn't even listed in the layers panel, as turning ALL the layers off, still leaves the Terms and conditions visible...
    This looks like a bug to me... I'm going to try and flatten the nested indesign document first, before I export to PDF to see what that brings, but that is of course quite the hassle.
    Would be interested to see if more people have run into this thing...
    Kind regards,
    Willy

    Contrary to popular belief, I am not a complete moron However, since this problem could just as well be in Acrobat as in Indesign, I thought it best to post it in the Suite forum first.
    Of course I could post in both the Indesign as well as the Acrobat forum, but then I'm sure there will be helpful readers suggesting me to put it in the other. One cannot win
    There for I shall leave it here for a while. If I don't get any meaningful feedback, I'll re-post it in the other Forii...
    Kind regards,

  • Can you include hyperlinks in an indesign doc. exported to HTML?

    Trying to send an email newsletter that has images/hyperlinks and maintains its format.
    When you export an indesign doc. into html code will the hyperlinks still work?
    If so, what do I have to do to make sure that the links and images work after sending it in email body.
    Thanks very much - any help is warranted

    Hi, I was just wondering if you got the problem resolved. I'm asking because we are experiencing kind of the same issue in our office. Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd. We would appreciate if you could share your solution if you were able to fix the issue. Thanks!!

  • InDesign doc exported to PDF won't print

    I'm experiencing issues with an exported PDF from InDesign. More specifically, when I export the InDesign doc to a PDF and try to print, I don't have any issues, nor does anyone else in my office, however some of the people that I'm sending the document to are experiencing trouble printing it. They get to 44% flattened and then the printing process slows down, and then once it reaches 50% they get a pop-up window saying that the document can't print and the whole thing stops. They can print the first page by just selecting that page, however the second page cannot be printed this way. I have re-exported the PDF several times and these folks having the issues have cleared their browser cache, re-downloaded the document, saved it to their desktop before opening, and tried renaming the document as well.
    What's going on here, and what can I do or tell them to do to fix this?
    Also, updating their Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat does not solve the problem.

  • Export InDesign doc to .fla

    I Export an InDesign CC document to an .fla-file.
    But when I open the fla into Flash Professional CC I don't see anything.
    I see that InDesign CC exports the file to an C6 fla.
    Could this be the problem?

    There's no way you can export directly to CC fla.
    I don't have any problem opening exported .FLAs in CC.
    But when I open the fla into Flash Professional CC I don't see anything.
    InDesign pages get exported as movie clips and are put on the main timeline sequentially. Exported FLA's have no code and you would need to add ActionScript code to the timeline or document.as file in order to make the pages do anything. So if your first page was blank the first key frame will be blank:

  • Bookmarks exist but don't work in PDF (exported from InDesign)

    Hi all,
    I had a similar problem a few months ago where SOME cross-references within a document weren't taking you to the right place when exported to PDF although they appeared to work fine in InDesign (the "source" and "destination" arrows took you to the right place). Someone suggested exporting the file to IDML and importing again, which worked fine.
    Now I'm working on the same document (an update) but it's grown a bit and so each chapter is in its own file within a book. Problem is similar but not the same. Some cross-references work fine in the generated PDF, others are recognised as being links (cursor changes) but NO effect when clicking on them... not taking me to the wrong place, nothing is happening at all. ALSO the table of contents AND the bookmarks don't work.
    I've exported each chapter to IDML, recreated the InDesign files and recreated the book, but still no joy. If all else fails, I'll put the book back into a single file but I'd rather not go through this pain each time I have to update the book (especially as this latest change was really tiny).
    Any suggestions? Are cross-references between files in a book known to be problematic? And if they are, has the problem been addressed for CS5.5? (I'm looking to use InDesign for a journal that will contain a lot of links between elements, but the turnaround time is tight and I'm wary of this issue being a problem each month.)
    Currently using CS5 on Windows 7 Professional, and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended was installed as part of the Tech Comm Suite.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alison

    This is so funny...I was just about to close my email and look up the
    Forums to profusely thank the person who posted the solution to a similar
    problem I was having in CS4.  I'd created numerous hyperlinks in Indesign
    documents and sometimes the links worked in a pdf, and sometimes not.  The
    problem solver was talking about a solution in Word, but I found the same
    type of text in the PDF settings box that pops up when you want to save the
    pdf.  There are all kinds of checkboxes and I'd thought I was doing enough
    by checking 'add hyperlinks'...but the advisor said you have to make sure
    'tagged PDF' is CLEAR.   So the same thing will probably work for you with
    your bookmarks!  (...if the settings are similar in CS5 of course, and
    there's no reason they shouldn't be.  I guess.)
    The only thing is, there's a lot of what we call 'ant work' ahead of me.  I
    have to go back to each InDesign doc and retype the text in the home font,
    and create the hyperlinks over again.  Luckily, the hyperlink destinations
    are still there.  It's not enough just to export the document again with
    the Tagged checkbox cleared, and you can't create a new hyperlink over an
    old one; the 'new hyperlink' option isn't available under Interactive. So
    you may have the same problem.
    Let me know if this works!  I'm off to thank the person...

  • Exporting from InDesign into a PDF to be used in Acrobat question.

    Hi, I'm trying to figure out if there's a way when exporting to PDF to leave fields open/editable(not the word im looking for) so that when the form is opened in Acrobat the form can be typed on/on top of, dont want to change/edit the actual document.
    What i have is an InDesign doc, that just a form for college classes (things like Course #, Course Title, Credit hours, Final Grade, College, ect) So there are blank spaces in the Table we made that need to be filled in at a later date, those In past times the completed form would have just been printed out and the person filling it out would just write that in. What i'm wanting to know is if there is way that i can set up the document for export to the PDF, that the program recognizes that those spaces need to be left so that we can type in it in another program, like Acrobat. Its for college office work so our office ladies dont have indesign and use acrobat regularly.
    I hope that makes sense i can try to explain again if need be. A pic of the table is attached.
    Thanks

    Yeah that's the best bet, though if you don't want to make a bunch of fields, you can also just save it with the Typewriter tool enabled in Acrobat (Tools > Typewriter > Enable Typewriter Tool in Adobe Reader).  Then, the person viewing it will get a little typewriter tool that they can use.  I think they have to have version 9 of Adobe Reader.
    But it looks the best to add in all the fields individually.
    Hope that helps,
    Phyllis

  • Export a Indesign(CS3)  Document as PDF(Windows)

    Hi,
    I am beginner in Indesign Plugin development.
    I want to export a Indesign CS3 document as PDF programmatically. I
    know that we need to use IPDFExportPrefs and set the various
    attributes.I dont know proper code.
    Can anybody give the code to implement it.
    Or any reference to find it.
    Thanks,
    Ravi sharma

    Arthur,
    You can't export the document directly to HTML, but you can use the Cross-Media Export to make and XHTML file for Dreamweaver (or other editor). It will generate an HTML page and a blank CSS style sheet, as well as gathering the images, but web and print are entirely different formats so you won't have anything resembling your ID doc when you get through, as far as layout is concerned. If you want people to see your layout as is, you need to use PDF. Try changing the compression settings for the export to bring the size down, but it will be a compromise somewhere most likely.

  • "Cannot recover" Error when opening InDesign doc

    We are a Server 2008 w/ XP/SP3 client environment. I have a user that opens an InDesign doc located on a shared network drive, does some work on it, and closes it. When the next person opens it, they get this error: "Cannot recover <<filename>>.indd. Please try to open it using the File menu. The file <<filename>>.indd has been changed since Adobe InDesign last quit (Error code: 11). They can click "OK" to this. The next window that pops up has an error: This document contains links to missing or modified files. Click Fix Links Automatically to have InDesign update this document with the modified files and help you locate missing files..." there's more about using the links panel, etc. They click "don't fix" and the document opens. To the best of my knowledge it is happening on just one file.
    I'm pretty sure the second error is because we recently took a server off-line that some of the links had been pointing to; I've informed my users they need to update the links in the files. It's the first error I'm wondering about. The first user I mention at the beginning has been having *tons* of trouble with InDesign the last week or so. It locks up, freezes panes, and needs to be ended through task manager. It's been unbearable for both her and myself trying to figure out what's wrong. My hurdle is that I don't use the software at all but I'm in IT support so so I'm in charge of troubleshooting but not sure where to begin.
    Can someone please help with the error we are receiving and also, provide some suggestions on how I can troubleshoot the performance issues?
    Her system specs:
    XP2002/SP3
    3GB RAM
    P4 2.8GHz proc.
    Not sure on the graphics card but can retrieve it will be helpful. User does use dual monitors.
    TIA!

    Reinstalling won't necessarily fix the kinds of problems you are having since they may have nothing to do with the application itself. I woud uninstall first, whenever possible, and immediately run any updates. Changing the preferences would be more productive as a first step though. Prefs are not automatically replaced on a new installation, either -- it depends on what option you chose during the uninstall.
    For your questions:
    1) When a file is opened, ID write a file with the extension .idlk in the same directory. This file tells any instance of ID that the file is already open and in use and prevents multiple users form having simultaneous access. It may or may not be deleted (usually not) during a crash scenario.
    2) Generally speaking it is not possible for mere mortals to recover a corrupt ID file. Tommy Donovan at Adobe is collecting them for study, but makes no promise of recovery. The folks at Markzware say they have some luck using their ID2Q plugin for Quark Xpress to open and save as a Quark file, then going back the other way using Q2ID to convert back. They might do a on-off for a small fee.
    3) Go to the link in the previous response, and scroll down to the part about repalcing preferences. Editing the prefs in the edit menu is not the same as replcing them with a new set. The files that need to be replaced are InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData.
    4) If there is something wrong on User 1's system that is corrupting the file, it would show up when User 2 opens it. Export the file to Interchange format (.inx), then open that file and save as a new .indd file. That can often clean up minor problems (i.e. those not serious enough to keep the file from opening at all).

  • Export all open docs as PDF

    I am working on a script which should export all the open docs as PDF.
    I use the following script to export. but InDesign does not export all the PDF. Assume, I have opened seven docs and the script exports only 4 docs and again come back to the first exported doc. can any one help how to resolve the issue.
    var myTotalDocs = (app.documents.length);
        for(var i = 0; i < myTotalDocs; i++)
            myDocument = app.documents[i];
            app.activeDocument = myDocument;
            var myFilePath = app.activeDocument.filePath;
           app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, File(myFilePath+"/"+".pdf"),false);
    Thanks

    Dear Ramji
    Please use the below code for solving your problem:
    //===================== Start : Export =================================//
    var myTotalDocs = (app.documents.length);
        for(var i = 0; i < myTotalDocs; i++)
            myDocument = app.documents[i];
            app.activeDocument = myDocument;
            var myFilePath = app.activeDocument.filePath;
           app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, File(myFilePath+"/"+".pdf"),false);
        myDocument.close(SaveOptions.NO);
    //===================== End: Export =================================//
    Once Export the InDesign open document then immediatly close... otherwise this problem [what you menditoned] will occure.

  • Auto-generated links exported from InDesign do not work in tablet apps

    Hyperlinks automatically detected and exported from InDesign CS6 8.0.1 as a PDF work fine on the desktop version of Acrobat Reader. However, on the iPad version of Adobe Reader as well as iBooks and GoodReader, these links are completely ignored, meaning they are just text.
    On the other hand, if I was to manually set the hyperlink in InDesign or Acrobat, the link works fine.
    It would be extremely tedious and time consuming to manually reset hundreds of hyperlinks in my documents since InDesign use to handle this correctly.
    Is this a bug? If so, it's pretty serious and should be Adobe's priority to fix since millions of people read documents on tablet devices.

    No, it's a Feature of Acrobat and reader that they attempt to create links from anything that "looks like" a URL. Other readers lack the feature.
    It's not good practice to depend on this in any case as it's hardly foolproof even in Acrobat. Links that break across lines, for example, will not be properly recognized.

  • How do I link to Anchor Text from browser to PDF file exported from InDesign?

    I see that this question was asked previously but not answered:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3737541
    I need a way to link to topics (from an HTML page) within a structured PDF file generated from InDesign, i.e. one that has an interactive bookmarks
    panel, that doesn't break the links when the file is updated.
    In particular, I don't want to refer to:
    *  page numbers because the document will repaginate when it is updated, breaking existing links
    * named destinations that are numeric as addition/deletion of topics renumbers the named destinations, breaking the links.
    Is there any option in InDesign that creates named destinations derived from bookmark titles as that would seem to solve my problem?
    I have a similar need, but I have not been able to find an answer anywhere online, even after a several hours of research.
    I am on contract with General Electric to develop a UI Style Guide for an international team of developers. My client wants to be able to distribute the Style Guide as a PDF document, but needs to provide links to specific topics when submitting a "Story" in an Agile development environment to the programmers.
    Ideally, I would like to be able to create "named destinations" in InDesign such that I can provide the client with a list of URLs similar to this format:
    file:\\StyleGuide\Test1-20131024a.pdf\#nameddest=AnchorText-01
    However, I can not figure out how to create "named destinations" in the PDF file from the InDesign file in which I have created the Anchor Text in the Hyperlinks tab.
    Alternately, the client would be satisfied with the ability to link to specific bookmarks in the exported PDF file that have been derived from the configuration of the Table of Contents styles, but my research has led me to believe that it is not possible to hyperlink from a browser window to a bookmark in a PDF file (only to specific page numbers, search word lists, named destinations, and comments) as described here: http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
    Having been using InDesign since 1988, when it was PageMaker, I would prefer to use it to provide GE with the most attractive deliverable, but they are now leaning heavily toward having me licensed with Madcap Flare, which has this capability built in:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
    Please help me to find a solution that will allow me to continue using InDesign for this project.
    Thank you!

    Follow-up post (solution is not available):
    I have just completed a phone call with Gaurev Sethi of Adobe escalated technical support in which I shared my screen to explain and demonstrate the desire to link from an external URL to a specific location within a PDF file that has been exported from InDesign. After 40 minutes, during which I was placed on hold a few times while he consulted with his team, it was determined that the desired functionality is not supported in InDesign and has been identified as a limitation of the software.
    In researching alternate documentation software that supports PDF export, I discovered that Madcap Software supports this functionality in its Flare product:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
    Note that linking via URL to a bookmarked location within a PDF is not supported:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
    More about parameters that can be specified to open PDF files are available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters.pdf
    Although the above link is for a previous version of Acrobat, I could find no evidence to the contrary in the current SDK documentation.

  • EPUB exported from InDesign works on iPad and not on Android tablets

    I've edxported several similar books to EPUB from InDesign CS5, using the same technique each. After exporting from InDesign, there's a lot of tweaking of the HTML code and some changes to the content.opf and toc.ncx, but the finished product for all of the books works fine on iPads but some do not work on Android tablets. There are six separate InDesign documents in each epub book...three small, one large, and then two small. Some of the books work fine on Android tablets, but for some of them, the first three documents show up fine, but when one advances to the large document, the book closes. There's no error message. Any ideas what the problem might be? Are there size limitations for documents on Android machines?

    As you have found out - it doesn't work.
