Exporting to mpeg-2 question

My friend gave me a bunch of 720x480 mpeg clips from a music festival and asked me to edit them together.
When I play the raw files on my standard TV they fit perfectly...
But when I export the edited files as mpeg-2 in the same resolution...they are scaled down and dont fit the TV.
I know this will seem like fairly basic stuff, but I've searched and can't find an answer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe you could be a little more specific or show us a picture. what do you mean by "shrinks"
is it smaller in every direction or just squeezed letterbox? it must be a sequence or encoder setting for the resolution or aspect ratio.

Quicktime 7 does not export to mpeg-2

Hi,
Is this inherent to QT 7? I noticed it as a deficiency in Final Cut Pro 3.0.2, tracked it back to this version of QT. The export choices are the same although with different wording. Did not have this problem after a total hard disk crash which needed everything re-installed. FCP presumably with the QT version on disk. Updates on both FCP and QT 7 did not resolve this. FCP and QT 6 work fine in OS9; both have the mpeg-2 export option.
How can I get QT 7 in OS X to perform this export to mpeg-2 function?

Next related question : can we get around mpeg-2? It was needed for compressing from Final Cut Pro 3.0.2 and importing to DVD Studio Pro 1.5, no other compression is accepted. Are there updates for DVD Studio, e.g. for using mpeg-4, H.264 etc? By eliminating the mpeg-2 compression from Quicktime Apple have effectively rendered the use of FCP (3.0.2) and DVD Studio Pro 1.5 (in Tiger) useless; 1000$ for nothing. I can use these programs in OS 9 but not everybody has that option. You mentioned Toast as an alternative for mpeg-2. Which version? I have 6.11, had bad experience with version 7. Any advice?

Premiere Pro CS5 - Media Encoder Crash when Exporting to MPEG-2

System:

12GB DDR3 1600
External Sound Card - M-Audio ProFire 610
OS Drive - 2x300GB WD Raptors - Raid 0
Project Drives - 3x300 WD Raptor - Raid 0
Video Card - Geforce GTX 285 1GB
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and Media Encoder CS5 continually crashes or hangs every time I try to export to MPEG-2. I can successfully render to every other codec without any issue, but need the MPEG-2 for an Adobe Encore Project.
The project is approximately 38 minutes long and contains AVI and MP4 files, all of which were ripped from DVDs as I'm producing a reel for a producer who provided his DVDs for me to rip and use as content.
Possible issues:
1.   Currently have Magic DVD Ripper and DVD Fab installed (codec conflicts?)
2.   Originally ripped the DVDs at 630x360 (my mistake - hadn't really worked with a DVD ripper before and was the largest avi pre-set) and I'm exporting to MPEG-2 standard 720x480 Widescreen) (I know I should've just ripped them as the original lossless MPEG-2 files - I'm a tool)
2.   Blank space in the timline (there are a number of these)
I would like to get some input before I try to export to MPEG-2 again as I blew a capacitor on my old mother board (Gigabyte x58-ud3r) after I had gotten my computer to start rendering a MPEG-2 after about 50 tries to export/launch media encoder set on MPEG-2. I just installed my new motherboard to replace it. Clearly MPEG-2 taxes the system more so than any other codec (from what I can tell). However, I thought the issue with the blank space/no media in the timeline was fixed with CS5. I saw in a previous post that someone thought that ffdshow was conflicting with AME. I don't have ffdshow, but I believe that's a ripper program like Magic and DVDFab.

I experienced this at one point. Searching the WEB I saw suggestions that there was a problem with a recent version of Quicktime. (I have no idea why the quicktime player would have an impact.) However, reverting to an earlier version of Quicktime fixed the problem. Search this board using quicktime as a search phase. The quicktime web site allows you to download the earlier versions. I'm not at my editing machine, but I believe that I am at version 7.5.2.

Audio missing while exporting an MPEG 2 with Compressor

I exported a sequence from a video project in Final Cut Pro, using Compressor. While exporting an MPEG 2, I get no audio on the video file. What do I need to do so the Audio is embedded with in the MPEG 2 file?

If you want to make a DVD-Video, then you'll need to import both files into DVD-SP for authoring.
If you want to make an MPEG-2 Program Stream or MPEG-2 Transport Stream, choose the appropriate DVD preset for your program length, duplicate the preset then alter the preset copy to make it produce a muxed (multiplexed) file.

Why iMovie HD 6 can't export in MPEG-2 ? In older version, it could be possible to export in that format. Now, there is only the MPEG-4 format.
I want to export in MPEG-2 and use the movie in DVD Studio Pro.

older version of Toast (v4?) installed a mpeg2-export-plug-in into the QT Folder, to add this feature, iM never supports export to mpeg2 natively, because, as mish told you, that is done in the authoring/encoding apps...
mpeg4 is a web-delivery format...
you've spend 1200$ for your app, please "spend" another minutes of your lifetime for reading the manuals, you got with DVDSP...

Impossible to export a .mpeg (encoder CS6)

I'm confused by that statement. You don't 'find' anything in AME. You send your PP sequence to AME for export. Then you bring those assets into Encore for authoring.

Exporting from .mpeg to .mov file loses sound

Okays so I know that there are numerous forum discussions out there on this topic but none helped me figure out my problem so I decided to create my own.
I'm trying to take a xxx.mpeg file and convert it to a smaller xxx_web.mov file that I can use for posting on the web and sending to friends easily over ichat. To get my mpeg file I:
1. used mac-the-ripper to get the Video_TS folder from a DVD with now encryption.
2. then I took that .VOB file from that and drug it into MPEG Streamclip to convert the .VOB file to an xxx.mpeg.
All is well up till this point and xxx.mpeg plays fine with sound. Next I tried to use quicktime pro to export my xxx.mpeg file to xxx_web.mov. This gave me video with now sound
Then I read about mpegs being muxed and I needed to demux them. So I used MPEG Streamclip to demux xxx.mpeg with the following option from MPEG Streamclip:
DEMUX to M2V and AIFF.
This worked succussfully as well with the M2V file playing normally in quicktime with sound. I then tried to export the M2V file to a .mov file and got the same outcome...video but no sound.
Can someone walk me through what I'm doing wrong? Also I just started using MPEG Streamclip can it do everything i'm trying to do (meaning can I bypass using quicktime pro)?

If the source DVD is not encrypted, then the VIDEO_TS folder or desired non-zero title VOB series can be copied directly to your hard drive without the use of MTR.

If you goal is to create a small, web compatible file, you should convert to your final target compression format while in MPEG Streamclip. Most Apple applications use the H.264/AAC compression format for posting to web sites since it generally produces the smallest file for a given level of quality. For instance, selecting the "Export to MPEG-4..." option in MPEG Streamclip, pressing the "iTunes" button, and then selecting an appropriate size/aspect combination will automatically load user settings to create your final file. The 640x480 or 640x360 iTunes option will produce a file similar to the iTunes option in QT Pro (or iTunes) but will also retain your audio.

QT Pro does not fully support multiplexed MPEG compression formats. An MPEG (MPEG2/MP2) compression format will play in the QT player with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed but cannot be edited or converted and retain the audio. To retain the audio, you must use a third-party, MPEG-based conversion application like MPEG Streamclip.

This work flow creates two elementary stream files. Both the M2V (with MPEG-2 component installed) and the AIFF file are QT Pro compatible. However, they must always be stored together on your hard drive. Since the M2V video file "resources" the AIFF audio in a separate file, if the files are separated, this reference will be orphaned and, as you have seen, you again end up losing your audio.

If I export to any format (QuickTime movie, AVI, Windows Media, MPEG-4), all of the audio options are greyed out. Some say explicitly that there is no audio in the source movie. If I go ahead, I get a file with no audio.
The "Save" and "Save As..." options do not convert the compression format. They merely take the data (which you already said plays correctly) and places it in an MOV file container where it continues to play correctly. On the other hand, when you attempt to convert the file to other compression formats (i.e., change the data within the container), then you lose the audio. As indicated above, multiplexed formats like MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 layer 2 audio are playback only compatible with the QT structure. If you wish to convert the data to a different format and retain the audio, use a third-party, MPEG-based application.
QuickTime is obviously able to decode the .m1a audio since it can play it. Why does it seem to not be aware the audio is there if I try to export it?
Because QT is based on a multi-track engine that synchronizes audio and video frames with reference to external clocking. On the other hand, multiplexed content divides the audio and video into interspersed blocks of data synchronized spatially within a single data stream. QT could theoretically create two separate streams of data but has no way of synchronizing any single frame of audio with its video frame counterpart. The MPEG Streamclip engine can do this but requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback component to then bridge the gap between spatial and temporal based playback engines. Without this temporal relationship the QT player would probably return the infamous "Not a movie" message.

Compressor won't export in MPEG-2.

I'm using FCP 4.5 HD to edit a film shot with the Panasonic HVX200 and P2 cards. So far everything went pretty well, except I wasn't able to ingest the P2 files — I found a workaround solution by converting the .MXF files into .MOV files).
So I now have a 720HD .MOV teaser that I wish to export in MPEG-2 for DVD burning.
However, everytime I try to export through compressor, I get a message that says "can't process in background".
I tried to export the HD movie into a DV movie and then export in MPEG-2, but it won't work either: I still get this "can't process in background" message. I cannot export to MPEG-2 using Quicktime either...
Is there a way around that problem or am I doing something wrong?

I've done my "homeworks".
I read various yet often quite similar posts about Compressor, which doesn't work properly with Leopard (Compressor 2.3 and later would work better, if I understand correctly) and found out there wasn't much I could do to fix this bug...
I also read an Apple article about this problem: I did remove the Compressor files from the frameworks and receipts folders and reinstalled as indicated, but to no avail.
I'll try to get a used copy of Final Cut Studio, so I can get a more recent version of Compressor (as well as more recent versions of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, etc.), which should solve the problem. I just can't afford a brand new product right now (indie cinema is very expensive — editing is no problem, so output will have to wait until I generate more funds to cover the expense).
Until then, I'll export using Toast... I know, the available menu templates are... well they're just plain bad. But it works fine, so it will be okay for a while.

Help! FCE won't accept anything I export from MPEG Streamclip 1.9

I've searched the forums, and I've done it before, and this should be the answer:
Exporting from MPEG Streamclip to QT using the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC codec should work to make a movie FCE will import in the DV-NTSC Easy Setup without the need to render!
It doesn't work anymore. I swear. I've tried every Easy Setup, tons of combinations of MPEG Streamclip exports (all QT) and Easy Setup for the past 2 hours. No matter what export I try, FCE won't accept it without the need to render.
What am I missing? This has always been so easy. Please please help. Thank you.

Cannot export to MPEG-4

I just purchased the Quicktime Pro upgrade after downloading the latest version of Quicktime (7.1.3). The key code was accepted ok and the Pro features are apparently available from the from the menus. I can open and play an .avi or .mov file but when I try to export to MPEG-4 there are no options for the video (and limited options for the audio). I have read the documentation and expect to see some video export options available, but all I get is "Save as type: All Files (.)" but no options. I have rebooted Windows, but no change. I want to be able to convert the video file to MPEG-4 for viewing in iTunes. Thanks for any help provided in getting this to work.

After choosing Export from the File menu you should be presented with a QT Window that includes a drop-down menu labeled Export. Clicking and holding on that should allow you to choose the file type of the export, including "Movie to MPEG-4." There should also be a button labeled Options that allows you to choose the datarate, FPS and other options, depending on the file type. If these buttons are not present in the Export window then you may have a corrupted installation of QT and may need to reinstall.

You need to learn about encoding. The default file type is Lossless for a reason. If you are using Ray-tracing and you have a supported Cuda card you must use the Adobe Render Cue. If you are not using Ray-traced rendering then you should be using the Adobe Media Encoder.
This will get you started: Basic Workflow, the last section is on rendering.

No audio when exporting from mpeg to flv

We have two PCs with Premiere Pro and AME installed, and just upgraded to CC. On one computer exporting works fine, on the other one, I'm losing the audio when exporting from mpeg to flv. I have used the same preset as on the other computer (that works) and also tried other presets that came with AME.
I can't figure out why this wouldn't work on one but works fine on the other? Anyone who knows?

How are you determining that the FLV has no audio? Are you playing it back in VLC Player or importing it into Flash?
Also, do you see a full range of formats on the system where you don't hear audio? If some formats are missing this might be a licensing issue. Also check if AME recognizes audio on the MPEG source (hover over it in the queue and look for audio info in the tool tip).

Exporting in mpeg?

I am using Premiere 4. I am exporting clips to use in a software called Proshow Gold it does not like quicktime or .mov file but likes mpeg files. I thought a few weeks ago I had exported in mpeg but now when I go to export files or clips I do not see that as an option.
I know this is probably an easy fix can anyone help or ideas?

I know I could export in quicktime then convert it to mpeg but I am trying to eliminate a step as I ahve over 20 different files to do.
Am I missing something is one fo the above considered mpeg and avi is too large to use in other program?

IMovie HD (6.0.3) - Export Quality and Editing Question

Hi guys, i wanted to ask two questions. The first is that i wanted to export videos to upload onto YouTube and the best format for this seems to be the CD-ROM format that is available on the version i have, the only thing is my videos still appear low quality and pixellated even though i am editing good quality videos......i was wondering if i was doing anything wrong/or can do something better?
Also, when i am editing, can i place logos or maybe pictures onto the video e.g. with TV channels they have a logo at the corner of the screen. I also wanted to black out text on screen but i don't seem to be able to do that.

QuickTime has never supported anything more than "playback" of MPEG-1 formats and conversions to QuickTime formats will never include audio.

iMovie 7 can import and convert most MPEG-2 formats (DVD and HD media) and include audio. It also uses QuickTime for the work.
MPEG Streamclip does allow "batch" conversions. Do them while you sleep.

I've searched the forums far and wide and have found some somewhat similar scenarios, but nothing that answers my question. I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 on a Windows 7 machine. When I go to export the video, I do not see any options for any MPEG video output. The closest I can get is by using H.264 encoding, but that's not quite what I want.
Any ideas? Input would be greatly appreciated, and my apologies in advance if this is a redundant discussion. Just need to find the answer, and fast.

OK, with the "trial," that should not be possible.
Now, let's look at when this started happening. Were you once able to Export to the various MPEG formats/CODEC's?
If so, what has changed since that time? Though I would think that a change in the MainConcept MPEG CODEC's would affect things both directions, I'd look into doing a Repair Install. That will replace any corrupted .dll's, etc.
Also, it could be possible that the Preferences have become corrupted. An uninstall/reinstall, or Repair Install, will not affect that file. You might want to search around a bit (Jeff Bellune just linked to what I think was an Adobe KB file on doing this), but I believe that holding down Shift, while launching PrPro will clean out the Prefs. Seems that each Adobe program has a unique key-combo for doing this.
