Exporting to PDF, less than optimal font rendering...

Font doesn't display as sharp in pdf as it does in source InDesign file. See sample and pixilation of text edges. I am viewing on my iMac Retina, and also on MBP retina, and it's the same either way.
Yes, I am exporting with "Print" settings, and tried both "High-quality" and "Press" options. No difference in how text looks in resulting pdf.
Yes, I have already looked at settings and have unchecked the box for "Compress text and line art". Nada.
Yes, I even did an experiment where I converted text to outlines so it's not a font, but outline artwork. No avail.
Again, look at sample – I zoomed in 600% on pdf file, and took a screen sample. While the pixelation is subtle, it is there. And furthermore, there is no such degradation of text when viewing it in InDesign at any scale.
Please advise.

Depends on the monitor I suppose. LCDs usually smooth better than CRTs.
I tried it with Futura at 2400% and it seems fine. But I am on Windows and do not have a high-res monitor.
I know there are settings in Acrobat's Preferences that depending upon the monitor/card are accessible in Acrobat that affect the smoothing of fonts on-screen. Those settings are disabled on this laptop.

  • Export to PDF - Does not embed font

    Hello,
I have created my CV in Pages. However when exporting the file as a PDF, my chosen font refuses to embed/render when I open it on a Windows computer. The specific error is:
Cannot extract the embedded font 'LSHFUS+MuseoSlab-100'. Some characters may not display or print correctly.
The resulting PDF displays correctly on my Mac, iPad and iPhone, but not on any Windows computer.
Can anyone suggest what I might do to get this to work in Windows, and whether there are other applications available that help with exporting Pages documents to PDF?
    Thanks,
    Saj

Thanks for posting the links Koenig, hopefully we can figure out whether it is a font issue or a Windows issue. It's impractical to stop using non standard fonts, so I really don't want to go down the route of just using Arial/Verdana in my documents.
I'm not the one urging you to do that. I think that we must be free to choose our fonts (even ugly ones if we want and I must say that I see most ugly ones than well formed ones).
I did what I was able to do:
I downloaded the fonts, used them in a document.
    Print a PDF , export a PDF.
Then, I stored the two PDFs on a memory stick which I connected to an other machine which don't know what is MuseoSlab 500.
The result is exactly the one which I got on the first machine.
Also, how can I check if the font subset was embedded correctly in the PDF?
Given the behaviour described some lines above, I assume that the embedded subset is correctly formed but, I can't guarantee that.
This is why I asked peter to test because if I understand well, he has access to both operating systems.

  • Export to PDF error with embedded font

    Hello,
i have added a Barcode font to a report and it is failing to export to PDF now saying it that the "font is not allowed to be embedded in document".  i have tried with two different Barcode fonts A39W and C39W and both fail.
I have looked at forums which suggested downloading patches and updating the registry key ForceLargerFonts to 1, however this has not worked in either V9, V10 or V11.
    Can anyone help??
    Many thanks,
    Hugh

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing the same problem, except with the
Frutiger 45 Light font. When I try to export the report from Crystal Preview to PDF I get the error,
    ++++++++++
    Failed to export the report.
Frutiger 45 Light - Font is not allowed to be embedded in document.
    +++++++++++
I'm using CR Developer, Full, version 11.0.0.1282
I've checked in Windows XP and can see the font (a ttf) present with the other fonts installed on my PC in the Fonts folder accessed via the Control Panel in Windows. I can right-click on the font Frutiger 45 Light and see the Properties page for the Font. For all the Groups/Users I can see all the Permissions enabled except for Special Permissions.
I dont know what you mean by getting the security changed from the supplier of the font to allow embedding into the PDF?
My colleague was able to perform the same export from Crystal to PDF on his laptop, but it was an older laptop. So there must be a difference between the way our laptops are configured that is causing the problem. The version of CR is the same on both laptops the only obvious difference we can see is that the older laptop has Adobe version 6 installed and the new laptop has Adobe version 7, both machines have Distiller installed. He's now got an upgraded laptop and is getting the same error as I am.
Any help here would be much appreciated.
    Regards
    Robert.

  • Exporting to pdf: don't need fonts, do need links. How?

I'm using InDesign CS4, upgraded from PageMaker last summer.
I produce a couple of simple, mostly text newsletters using only basic fonts. In PageMaker I could prevent fonts from being embedded but in InDesign there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.
Then in Acrobat (v6 if it matters) when I go into PDF Optimizer to try to remove them, no fonts show up on the list. Yet the fonts are listed as embedded under Document Properties, and the Audit space shows that 65% is fonts.
I read here that I can print from InDesign to the Acrobat print driver and control it that way, but then the hyperlinks don't get included.
Here is an old newsletter pdf created from PM, and the same thing converted to InDesign and exported. (there may be small differences from the conversion)
    http://www.sginews.com/v26n04pagemaker.pdf    (76KB)
    http://www.sginews.com/v26n04indesign.pdf   (253KB)
How do I get rid of the bloat?

I'm fine with the reader's reader substituting Times for Times New Roman, Helvetica for Arial, etc. As you can see from the pub, precise typography isn't all that important.
But you have no way to ensure that even those fonts are available on the viewer’s computer. Even if they are, how do you know how the substitution will occur? If I just replace every glyph (letter, numeral, symbol, etc.) in one font with another, but leave the glyphs where they are I might make the text unreadable.
100 kb is a pitifully small threshold for saving a file for offline viewing. Unless this is meant to be read in Kazakhstan, then I’d ignore this arbitrary file size limit.
About the hyperlinks issue when distilling a PostScript file: there’s nothing you can do about that, since PostScript files do not support hyperlinks. But you can export a PDF with hyperlinks, then Distill a PostScript file. Open the exported PDF and use Document > Replace Pages. Replace all the pages in the open (exported) PDF with all the pages in the Distilled PDF. Hyperlinks will remain.

  • Exporting smaller PDF dimensions than InDesign layout dimension

Hi, a PDF looks best when viewed at 75% zoom in Adobe Reader. How can I export an entire 80 page InDesign document at this "75% zoom" resolution (so clients cannot zoom up to 100% in a PDF reader and see artifacting)?
There are too many images to update/modify by hand within InDesign...I'd just like to export the original InDesign layout at 75% of what it is within InDesign, to see if that will improve image quality when the exported PDF is viewed at 100%
    thanks!

Here's another approach introduced in InDesign CS6. It's now easier to create flexible layouts using the Create Alternate Layout feature.
I duplicated a 15-page layout set up at letter size to one set up at 75% scale (6.375" x 8.25").
I used the Liquid Layout panel to set the master pages to the Scale liquid layout rule. This scales everything on the page.
Then I selected all document pages and applied the Controlled by Master liquid layout rule.
I created a new custom page size called 75% Scale.
Then I chose Layout > Create Alternate Layout. In the dialog I selected the original page size and selected the alternate page size:
Everything scaled to the new size:

  • Unable to Print a .pdf less than 100% size

I used to be able to print out the address book at 75% or 80% to make a smaller booklet.  Now it prints at 100% no matter what percent is entered.

Thanks.  That used to work on my Intel Mini.  I have OSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook and on an Intel Mini.  Both ignore any percentage I enter.  It just prints full size 8x10 pages.  Maybe there's something in Preferences somewhere, but I can't find it.  Or maybe a newer OSX update messed it up.

  • Google Chrome PDF viewer displays different fonts

When I design a document in either Indesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop I use many custom fonts. I export my PDF's as optimized as possible for web viewing from the layout program itself.
I don't stop there. I open my exported PDF in Acrobat and optimize the file further using the Optimize PDF tool. I flatten everything out, but I keep my fonts embedded. When I drag and drop the file in Google Chrome or Firefox the fonts change. I get some cheap looking serif font instead of my slab serif. I've tried unembedding the font as well and I get the same result.
    What gives?
I just want to make sure this isn't something I'm doing wrong. What's weird is it happens in Firefox/Chrome, but it doesn't happen in Safari.
    Firefox/Chrome PDF viewer:
    Safari PDF viewer:

    Interesting.
However, as what each of these browsers does to render a PDF is dictated by the respective coding discussions of that would have to take place each browsers "developer space".
Nothing there is controlled by Adobe eh.

  • JRC for Eclipse 2.0: Export to PDF with Flash Objects in RPT file

    Hi,
We've a few reports created with Flash objects in it ( from Xcelsius). We are trying to generate the reports and export it to PDF using the new JRC for Eclipse 2.0. The exported file size is big ( 600MB) but there is no flash object or data in it. Can you please help us with this one?
    Thanks,
    Bala

Hi, Ted. Thanks for looking into this.
I asked a similar question last September in this [thread|CR report with embedded SWF: Export to PDF displays nothing;. It's my understanding that exporting flash objects to pdf is not support in  CR 2008.
In CR 2008, when I export a report containing a swf to pdf, the flash file is not rendered in Adobe Reader. It looks like there's just a picture. In fact, in CR, if you r-click on the swf and do Format Flash... | Flash, you can change the picture used for export and printing. The default picture is what I'm seeing in the pdf.
I'm creating the swf using Xcelsius 2008. In XC 2008, if I export to pdf, the flash object is rendered. Why the difference?
The same Adobe reader is being used in both cases.
I'd be glad to send an .rpt with embeded swf for you to test.
    Thanks again.

  • Font Rendering issues in export to PDF-SSRS

    Hi,
Its a very strange issue,I am facing from last two days.
I have created a report having text with Gill Sans MT font.I am able to see the text in the mentioned font properly on report server as well as on my development machine.
Issue occurs when I export the report to PDF, as when i open the report in acrobat reader to view the font of the rendered text,it shows the font as Gill#20Sans#20MT which causes the text rendering up in Arial(default font).
If I Export from Word document the font is set as GillSansMT i.e name without spaces and text is rendered in correct font.I have installed the required font on both the locations i.e. report server as well as Development environment.
    Thanks & Regards,
    AS

    Hi Anand Sardesai,
Since the Gill Sans MT font is not been installed on the production server at first. Please make sure the font is installed correctly and that font embedding is granted font. If the referenced font is not installed on the report server, the resulting PDF
file might not contain the correct mappings and might not display correctly when viewed.
    Reference:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159713(SQL.100).aspx
Alternatively, I recommend you reboot the server try to resolve the issue. There is a similar issue for your reference:

  • Font jaggies when exporting to pdf influenced by images on page

Typeface Century ATF BQ (Postscript Type 1 font) renders jagged on screen on some Keynote 3 exported .pdf pages and sharp and clean on others when viewed by Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 and to greater and lesser degrees on other Macs and PCs. When viewed on screen in Preview it looks sharp but fat everywhere. When printed from Acrobat Reader everything is sharp.
We did tests to figure out what was going on and found that if we removed a .gif image from the page the type rendered fine. We converted the .gif file to a .png file (we needed transparent background) and found the type jaggies returned. Tried to use .pdf format to achieve transparent background. The type looked sharp, but the image imported with a white background even though it showed up as transparent in Photoshop.
Anybody have workaround suggestions to get a silhouetted image to be placed on a Keynote page without jagging the type?
Anybody have any sense of what is going on?

The image is not overlapping the text.
It was orginally overlapping a jpg but I moved it and the problem persisted.

  • PDF Font Rendering in Preview/Safari on Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to 10.8.2 a few days ago, I have been unable to read any of the PDF  statements provided by my bank.  To be clear: there was never a problem reading these statements in 10.5, 10.6, or 10.7.  The files are not corrupted, nor are the fonts embedded within them.  The copies I have saved locally display font characters as boxes of varying colors and sizes rather than actual letters/numbers.  The same is true of new copies of the same files I've downloaded from by bank's servers.  Observe:
So I extracted the fonts embedded within this PDF, and installed them in the Font folder of my user library.  After doing so, the PDF renders in Preview like this:
    ....which is less than useful.
This PDF, and all the others affected by this issue do render properly in Adobe Reader 10.1.4 -- but that's not the point.  I'd much rather use Preview.  Has anyone else encountered this issue and solved it?
    Thanks.

Indeed, wiping out the caches is not a permanent solution.
I found a couple of threads in some tex newsgroups that discuss this problem. There doesn't seem to be a resolution. There was some discussion that Latex Equation Editor is no longer being developed, but LaTeXIt, a similar program shows a similar font corruption problem. Fonts are fine in Preview until using LaTeXIt (or Latex Equation Editor), when they get 'corrupted'. By that I mean that documents viewed in Preview often come up sans-serif, regardless of the original font, and often special characters, such as arrows above letters (indicating vectors) disappear. Keynote files that use those characters (from, for example, using LaTeXIt under Tiger) show corruption. Rebooting (and possibly simply logging out and back in) 'cures' the problem, ie, Preview and Keynote are once again happy. During all this, Acrobat is always happy.
This is kind of painful, since I give physics lectures using Keynote, and things like integral and summation signs and vectors and such are kind of nice to have around.
Someone has got to know what is going on!
